Game Recap: Packers Fall 37-8 to 49ers, Struggle Again on the West Coast
Something about the Packers and the West Coast just doesn’t mix right this season. In a highly anticipated prime time matchup, the Green Bay Packers (8-3, 3-0 NFC North) struggled all night long against the San Francisco 49ers (10-1, 3-1 NFC West), falling 37-8 Sunday night.
“We got to be critical of ourselves. Every one of us. Coaches, players, everybody involved.
You gotta give the 49ers a lot of credit. That’s a pretty darn good football team,” coach Matt LaFleur said at his post-game press conference. “Disappointed with myself. With how we got outcoached and how we got outplayed. Bottom line. It’s unacceptable and we gotta look at ourselves. There’s a lot to correct if we want to be the team that we want to be.”
The Packers could not even get on the board in the first half, going down 0-23 heading into the break. A handful of questionable officiating calls and solid play from San Francisco’s offense was the lethal combination for Green Bay Sunday night.
The 49ers defense did not waste any time balling out like they have been all season. On the Packers’ opening drive, linebacker Fred Warner got to Rodgers and forced a fumble. Defensive end Nick Bosa was there to recover it at Green Bay’s 8-yard line and the next play the 49ers were up 7-0.
The Packers’ defense was able to somewhat hold on in the first half, but it was nearly impossible for them to keep playing at that level after being on the field for so long when the offense could do so little.
The offense struggled in nearly every aspect, but the offensive line was a special kind of bad. After Byran Bulaga left the game early on with a knee injury, things went from bad to worse for the Packers. Rodgers was sacked a total of 5 times and looked consistently frustrated out on the field Sunday. 12 finished the night 20/33 for 104 yards and 1 TD with a season low 75.8 passer rating (ESPN stats).
The Packers first and only touchdown Sunday resulted from wide receiver Davante Adams’ first touchdown of the season. Adams found the endzone again for the two-point conversion to give the Packers all 8 of their points on the night.
With struggles all around there was honestly not much to take away from this one, folks.
What we learned: California is cursed
First against the Chargers and now against the 49ers, the state of California and the Green Bay Packers are just a recipe for a disaster. Please, please, please, do not let them go back to California in the playoffs. Please.
What went right: Za’Darius Smith
No matter a win or a loss this season, Za’Darius Smith has continuously been the heartbeat of this team. Z was winning his one-on-one battles all night long, and even when the team was down 0-20, was still out there playing his heart out.
Smith finished with a team high 6 tackles, 5 of which were solo, 1.5 sacks and 2 tackles for loss according to ESPN stats.
What went wrong: Converting on 3rd down and more
So, so much went wrong for Green Bay Sunday night, but if I had to pinpoint the most significant thing, for me, it would be their inability to convert on third down. The Packers were 1/15 on third down. 1/15. YUCK!
Special teams continued to struggle yet another week for Green Bay too. Punter JK Scott’s struggles only dragged on another week with a handful of short punts, and the team’s inability to return literally anything on punt returns is still front and center. The Packers have -11 punt return yards in their last 11 games according to Athletic writer Matt Schneidman. Not great.
Offensive Standout: Davante Adams
One of the very ~few~ bright spots for Green Bay in Sunday night’s game was Davante Adams scoring his first touchdown of the season. It was a breath of fresh air to see 17 in the endzone again after watching the Packers struggle all night long.
Tae led the team in receiving with 7 receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown (ESPN stats).
Defensive Standouts: Za’Darius Smith and Blake Martinez
As I mentioned before, Za’Darius Smith showed up yet another week for Green Bay, but they also got a fair amount of productivity from linebacker Blake Martinez.
Martinez had a handful of great tackles Sunday and finished the day right behind Smith with 6 tackles, 4 for a loss, 1 sack and 1 tackle for a loss (ESPN stats).
Up next, the Packers travel to New York to face off with the New York Giants Sunday Dec. 1. Kickoff is set for 1 PM EST.

The defense is awful. Receivers are wide open every darn game. King is brutal. So is Alexander.

In the first half alone SF started drives on the GB 2 and mid-field twice.
GB had 8 drives in the first half, and averaged 4.25 plays per drive. 4.25!
The defense was not good yesterday, and the big play allowed by King was a back breaker early in the 3rd quarter. But the first half could have been much worse if not for some shut-down defense by GB.

No help for Adams at the receiver position. Speaking of Adams, he turned the entire game around with that stupid penalty on the first drive. If the Packers score on that possession, even a field goal, the game is different.

Allison dropping a first down pass, killed the other drive. The lack of talent in the WR corps is coming home to roost.
Gutedkunst had to make a move on a guy to elevate that side of the ball, or at least pull in a sp team guy capable of fielding a fair catch or shaking for at least 5-10 yards. Whomever that clown is on PR, cut him and start over. Try to present some semblance of a return game. Lindsley is playing himself off the team.

MLF cannot make in game adjustments. What has happened to the hurry up which was very successful. He is slowing this team down and it’s not working.

They do not have a speed receiver to complement Adams or a TE competent to beat a 1:1. Niners sat in the box like a fat cat waiting for mice. You have to burn them when that situation arises and the Pack can't pull it off with the players they have.

Think your assessment is a bit of an overreaction. The 9ers are a darn good team. Yea- the Pack got punched in the mouth, but I think MLF deserves a chance to learn from it, and have the opportunity to come back stronger. I for one think this is good for this team. GB’s D has been lauded for weeks now. They are crashing back to earth. Their not out of it by any means tho

Nice article Sarah, but you cannot blame California, you can't blame the refs, can't blame Adams bonehead penalty, only the bonehead Packer players and coaches. How pathetic, how disappointing, how embarrassing. Two weeks to prepare for a big game. Study the tapes, learn the opponents strengths and weaknesses, study the players. Walk out onto a field and forget everything and anything you may have learned. Rodgers forgot how to throw a football. Bounce it? Throw it over your receivers heads or too far away? Receivers forgot how to get open? LaFleur forgot how to throw the flag on a clear reception (Graham)? Rodgers forgot how to throw a ball away instead of take a sack, or worse, a TD? And then you stand on the sidelines pouting like Jay Cutler? Defense forgot how to cover a tight end, running back, and tackle? Oline forgot how to open a hole for your RB or stop your QB from getting leveled? A defense that makes every opposing quarterback look like a future HOFer? Are you that stupid all of you? You get paid millions and millions a year and cannot do your job! You weren't embarrassed enough by the beaten up Eagles or the Chargers that don't even have a home crowd in their own stadium? Yes, you all are truly pathetic, so pathetic. You are hanging on to a division win by the skin of your teeth. You'll be lucky to win playoff game! Seattle? New Orleans? San Francisco? They're just salivating to see you in the playoffs. Shame on you Packers. Shame shame shame.

I was shocked how sluggish the offense look first quarter. Not making the mental adjustments just like at the Chargers. Did not expect a rerun of the same game plan and no execution, but that's what we got. Lapses on the O line, Jenkins looking and playing like a rookie tonight and of course Alex (turnstile) light were only the part, and not the worst of the low lights of tonight's game. This falls on MLF lap. No excuse here. One last point. Mark Murphy's veto (which he was finally stripped of by the semi awake executive committee) cost them an quality ST and O line coach, and we saw the results tonight. More work for Gute...

Good call on the "brain-trust" @ 1265 Lombardi Ave. Gutekunst was not aggressive enough to bag the guy or guys needed to supplement the talent in the WR room. While not a fan of Davis, the trade left the Pack weaker in the sp team dept. Pettine has to get the safeties on the same page as the DBs. The Jackson and Burks picks seem like lost causes, much like the Gutey fav' Josh Jones. Now they have to run the table right into the shipwreck by the river.
We'll see, but remember boys and girls, this team has zero resemblance to the 2010 group.

I got blasted on here earlier this year for pointing out that I thought the Stenavich hire was a joke. Well 12 weeks in and the Packers can't run the staple play of their run game [the outside zone], Bhaktiari doesn't even resemble the same player from the past 3 years, while Linsley is still out on Levi field looking for his mouthpiece as he was taken to school repeatedly, AGAIN. The line never seems prepared and are among the league leaders in total penalties against, pre and post snap. At least Jenkins and Light look like they have promise for the future. I'd be surprised if Stenavich is with GB next year.

I have a new appreciation for Cowboys fans, 9ers fans are grade A jerks. They’re not aggressive like Philly fans but they’re not pleasant people. Which is funny because Californians are pretty nice in general away from sports. As for the game we sucked no excuse, a well earned “L”.

MLF had time to prepare but he still refused to deal with issues that have been apparent since early on; Martinez can't cover the middle of the field or stop the run. Allison and MVS are awful. King is a turnstile, completely getting turned around, as he did tonight, more than any CB I've ever seen. Graham is way past his expiration date. Rodgers refuses to throw to the middle of the field and takes sacks rather than let receivers make a play. All of these problems have been there since day one of the season, certainly the last six weeks, and yet, Martinez plays 3 downs, Allison, MVS, King, and Graham still are starters. And the offensive scheme that was successful when Adams was down has been completely scrapped. Haven't even mentioned special teams. Fire the ST coach immediately. He's on a record-setting pace for futility. Really bad coaching on the part of the head coach, and bad GM work by Gute. His two drafts have been mediocre to awful; 19 picks, three starters. 12 picks in 2018, one decent starter, Alexander, one awful starter, MVS, and the rest garbage. Wasted high picks; Burks, Jackson, Rashan Gary -- did Gary play tonight? Didn't hear his name mentioned once. Did hear Deebo Samuel. Oh, to have a #2 WR. The last five games should be used to try new personnel; Bench Allison and MVS. Bench Graham. Less Martinez and let's see what Summers can do. Both the offensive and defensive coordinators should be on notice. A Hall of Fame QB looks like a frightened game manager out there. This is a bad team right now, regardless of the record. The honeymoon is over. Try something different LaFleur. If you can't hold people responsible for their poor play then you're just a McCarthy clone.

Another Rodgers meltdown against a Cover 3 Defense. Has he ever beaten a team that plays cover 3 w/ decent personnel? Seattle w/o Thomas and Sherman don't count. I can't recall... It is Rodgers kryptonite!

Yeah if he hadn’t gave up 37 points or if he could have punted longer than 40 yards or if he would have done a better job blocking they probably would have won. Hopefully he will do better at those things next game.

Second: I’m going to puke if I have to hear what a great coach Pettine is and how we are so lucky to have him. He had a couple good years as DC under Rex Ryan, a job which consists of repeating the phrase, “ Whatever you say, Rex.” over and over.
Third: How do we find a ST coach worse than Zook? I mean, really?

The irony and its not funny. I read a big name D back a few years ago joking they knew M's playbook better than his own players. They knew the exact routes they would run and they would just stand there was wait for them and I think he was being dam serious.
My take, Le Fleur was was quick passing game over the middle and lots of screens and Rodgers wants and is allowed to call MM's old plays that he is comfortable with.

Does someone here knows why always good TE thrives against our defense?. Who is to blame? Martinez? Amos? Savage? Cornerbacks? Pettine? Lack of good run defense?
I mean, not only that, we have average to good players in most of the positions, the only ones I still don't count on are Martinez, Lowry and King. Can 3 to 4 players have that impact on the entire performance? I know the guys held up for a while and our offense and ST didn't help at all, but it seems to me that there is a lot of big plays every game... Is it Pettine system?
Not to say about the offense. Man, it is easy to throw the OL under the bus now, but at least they played OK in other games. What I can't stand are the receivers. Geronimo Allison and MVS always have at least 2 easy drops per game, all receivers (except Adams) seem like playing in slow motion every time. If you go against one of the best pass rushers in NFL, your run game doesn't work and your receivers can't get open even on short routes, then there isn't much you can scheme about it.
Everyone talks a lot about third-and-long situations, but everyone noticed how they get there? it is not only penalties... Actually, it is a lot of incompletions or receivers unable to get open on short routes.
P.S. I do believe LaFleur is often predictable, but in this game, there is nothing much else he could do about it.

Obviously lots of bad in this game, but after two weeks you come up with “ we have to get the ball to Allison more” that bothers me about the coaching. Maybe Nagler and others still think Allison, kumerow, and the rest of the receivers not named Davonte just need more reps, but I for one have seen enough. I really don’t know if we didn’t have easy dump routes and slants called or if Rodgers wouldn’t throw them, or a combination. Someone will have to rewatch and tell me. I can’t bear it. Also Davante dancing after his td bothered me more than his penalty. Cmon man!

Martinez had a sack because no one worried about him. QB probably could have easily stepped out of that tackle. Name one more big tackle he made. He was next to invisible.

I didn't get a chance to watch the game and I haven't read the article yet, I just wanted to get this off my chest. I had score updates and as the game progressed my main thought was that GA and MVW were starting and Kumerow and Lazard were not being utilized in this game. From what I have been able to see (on TV and occasional highlight films) Kumerow and Lazard are more aggressive receivers than either GA or MVS and the offense as a whole seems to run better. I'll be interested in seeing the actual snap counts.

I thought the offense had discovered its identity when DA had been out those four games. Now it seems as if they have reverted back to the offense of the first three games.

It must be me. A week off and this is the crappie game plan our coaches come up with?
We come out after half time and we are business as usual and what I mean by that is Aaron Rodgers is snapping the ball with 2 or 3 seconds left on the clock.
Really!
We are down 23 zip time is not our friend.
Do we not know how to do Hurry up O or NO Huddle O any more?
I have yet (well we did one series a long time ago) to see us in a Hurry Mode.
Best way to shut down a crushing D like theirs was to not let them Sub and keep the game moving fast.
I'm 69 and I've never see our team use so many times outs to avoid delay of game.
Rodgers (not sure why) always waits until the last few seconds if not second to snap the ball. I know he is trying to get the D to jump. But once the clock hits 1 second they can go for it. Ball has to be snapped.
I just wish we would play at a faster pace.
AS for our D - did we think their TE was not going to play? This guy is rated real high and we have someone kinda covering him. Very poor.
We're a good team but by the looks of our loses No way I see us in the SB.
Oh Well on to next week.

Thought you might get a kick out of this.
Zimmer had a total hissy fit during a game they won and afterwards explained to the announcer "you never ever call a time out when your on offense". We wasted a time out. You cant do that. You need those for the end of a game if were behind. You only call a time out on defense if needed"
Zimmer will almost always have 2 or 3 time outs at the end of a game.Its discipline and management and we dont have that on our team

Well it's time we call a spade a spade - we are a soft team, we are and have been for years a finesse team. It just shows you what happens when you are soft, you get destroyed. We have a solid team, but we are not on a level with the top tier teams in the NFL. We will make the playoffs, but I suspect it will be one and done. We need more players with an aggressive attitude on both sides of the ball. In addition, we need MLB that can defend the TE and we really need improved coaching when it come to defending the middle of the field - nothing has changed the entire year??? We knew Kittle would be a problem and we did nothing to stop, that's poor coaching. Guys we have a long way to go to get to that top tier of teams.

Years of Ted and now the real estate manager have taken their toll. Will Gutedkunst get the necessary badasses on board to move Rodgers closer to a SB??? Drafting Jackson, Burks and Gary do not seem to lend support to the rebuild revival.

The Packers aren't in trouble. Sure they needed to start good. But the game was just another reality check. This team broke down. It wasn't pretty. But Lets make believe that the packers were fighting all odds. They just haven't peaked yet. We know what we need. But the games aren't fought on paper. This team lost it smarts. They got suckered. And the best thing to do is look for Leadership again. Rodgers must get the ball out quicker. The OL is playing scared. The defense needs to stop believing in presents. While the Smiths have provided the leadership. The biggest problem is the secondary again. The coverage sacks are gone. Deep down I wonder if they forgot how to play their best. For this to come to an end. Stop looking for miracles. Don't throw this game in anybodies face. The Packers have the ammunition to get in the play-offs. Assuming what they need isn't the problem.

Thanks for trying to be optimistic, but nothing amazing is going to happen this year. I am having some doubts about Petine. I thought we could maybe win some games with our defense which has been slowly fading away accept for the Smith's.
Special teams is still bad.
And, not sure why there were no deep balls thrown to the RBs. What has happened to the OL? If Rodger's holds the ball for more than 3 seconds you think he is going to make some great play, but it's either a sack, he runs short of the first down, throws it out-of-bounds or just busted play. When it was Brett F. it was usually a big play.
The offense needs to be fixed and it all starts with the OL. The OL coach is gonna have to go or something and like I said we have no real #2 receiver. This is why I wanted Jarvis Landry. Not sure why we don't pass more to M. Lewis over the middle. Why don't we put both J. Williams and A. Jones both in. Two different style runners, see what the D. gives you. Call an audible l. Run outside Jones, run inside J. Williams. Fake handoff inside play action. and hit A. Jones deep or play action.
Our strength is our RBs.

Pettine- He's committed to the 3-4-4. Who doesn't know how to beat it now? The defense has lost it's confidence. His Second and 3rd deep players are causing the confusion. Special teams are bad. Gute made another mistake in letting Davis go. The OL is set up by the center play. Linsey sucked! And if they sign Bulaga again, it will be a bigger mistake. He's just to slow and injury prone. Rodgers can't take his time against a fast D- line. More Slants, screens, and quick throws should have been used. If you watched Kittle, SF sold the run and burned the packers. Why the packers haven't been boxing in the Tes is on Pettine. Martinez needs play/snap management now. The strength still is Arron Rodgers.

As a Jersey Packer fan, I was looking forward to going to this Sunday's Packers - Giants game to see the team but I'm definitely thinking twice after that awful effort they put up last night. Second time this season I've turned a game off at the half and not bothered checking back. With two weeks to prepare and all the talk about 'self-scouting' and correcting things' I was expecting this team to come out on fire and raring to go; instead the first thing they did was gift the 49ers 7 points and it went downhill from there. Rogers in particular looked like he had some version of the thousand yard stare going when they showed him on the sidelines during the game. Don't know what it is, but our passing attack now seems to be more one of desperation rather than design and execution. Back when everyone was talking about how good it was to be 8-2 I couldn't help but think how bad the Packers had looked in the 2 losses they had, and but for some 'luck' in a few of the wins,, we'd have been 6-4 and one game behind the queens going into last night. Any redemption this year comes at the price of winning in Minnesota; and sorry to say if I'm betting I'd rather take 5 on the snowball in hell after what I saw last night.

For years and years I've said 'if only we were healthy'. Well, GB is one of the luckiest teams in terms of injuries this year, and I don't feel good about that.
SF was missing their starting LT and DE. Kittle has a broken bone in his leg. I'm sure there's more.

J.K. the punter is, again this season, a liability in the second half of the year.
Special Teams whilst it has not got it's act together it is looking better albeit a long way into the season.
We need some help at ILB and the defensive Line.
QB12 is still a very good QB. But he is not adjusting, or so it appears, to his once freakish physical skills eg eyesight declining. Thus he holds the Ball too long. He misses people that are open. He throws some poor short field passes, He has to adjust to what he can do now not what he could do previously to again be great.
WR core has issues be it fitnesses or confidence or otherwise.
Play calling is sometimes atrocious; perhaps MLF should hand this off.
There is much to do but there is time if we are good enough.

IMO - good teams with solid passing and a decent pass rush expose this team. Our linebacker play is weak and Pettine is trying to patch that hole with the corners leaving the safeties exposed.
