Gary's shoulder '110 percent' healthy for Packers

Everything checks out with Rashan Gary, who should enter Green Bay "110 percent" healthy.

-- Contrary to popular belief, the Green Bay Packers are getting a "110 percent" healthy football player in Michigan's Rashan Gary.

Gary was the team's No. 12 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft Thursday night, adding him to a defensive front now rich in pass-rushing expertise.

Despite reportedly dealing with a torn labrum in his shoulder -- reports that Gary claimed as false -- the Packers made Gary the first of their two first-round selections. They later swapped picks with the Seattle Seahawks, packaging two fourth-rounders (No. 114 and No. 118) to move from No. 30 to No. 21 and select Maryland safety Darnell Savage Jr.

Whatever the injury is, Gary told reporters via conference call Thursday night that there isn't a need for surgery, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky.

Gary missed three games in his junior season for the Wolverines, finishing with just 3.5 sacks and 38 tackles. He chose to forego his senior year and declare for the draft.

All signs indicate that the Packers view Gary as a stand-up outside linebacker as opposed to the prototypical defensive end with a hand in the dirt. This provides defensive coordinator Mike Pettine the flexibility to move Gary into various positions to impact the play in passing situations, even from the inside. He'd be serving in a similar role as Za'Darius Smith, who the Packers acquired via free agency last month.

While much of the skepticism with Gary stems from either his lack of effort or his impressive athletic profile not aligning to production on the field, general manager Brian Gutekunst doesn't view that as much of a factor behind selecting Gary.

"I think production is the way you look at it," Gutekunst said after the conclusion of the first round. "If you watch the tape and look at the different kind of stats, he affected the passer. He affected the game. At times, he wrecked it. Certainly, he's a premier athlete. He has an exceptional motor on the field. We were just, really since February, locked in on him. We thought this guy can do some different things and add to our group.

"If you watch the tape, he plays with his hair on fire. Again, I think a lot of things get floated in the media that get carried longer than they should and I disagree with that."

The Packers currently hold the No. 44 and No. 75 overall selections on day two of this year's draft, which will take place on Friday.

Nothing happened to BPA.

According to the person that made the choice, every draft pick in the history of the draft has been the best player available at that time. Just ask them. And I don't doubt they are telling the truth as they see it. The issue at hand is how often the GM is correct.

I'm not a fan of the Gary selection. But we won't know if Gute is right or me and others like me are right for a few years. I'll say this, there won't be any excuses that Gary doesn't have the athletic ability to succeed at the NFL level. He's got plenty of that.

In the meantime, I'll stick to questioning Gute over things for which there is more clarity. For example, his choice to retain Matthews & Cobb last year and Graham this year. That's a whole lot of cap space blown on very little production. The contract structure of his recent FA spending spree does not give me the warm fuzzies, either, but again that is to be determined. The guys Gute rolled with at Safety and RG in 2019 were horrific, too.

I like Wilkins better as well, but he won't bring pressure like Gary should be able to do. Burns had a 2nd round grade and listening to NFL channel last night, Sweat doesn't like screamers for coaches. You have to be crazy to invest in a talented 1st round player and knowing to get him to perform you must keep the decibels down. Not going to happen! Two players who teams considered under-coached in college...Oliver and Gary.

That just isn't the case considering they were aware of Savage's fast rise late in the draft process, and Baltimore's desire for him. They moved up to get Savage a pick before Baltimore (who then immediately traded down). Therefore I don't see a 'blind' GM.

It would be closer to the truth to say that they didn't see or hear anything in the last month or so, that changed their original analysis and grading.

Cause lots of college football was played in March and April to change their minds? I guess you must get paid lots of money to scout players for a living? Let the professionals do their job. If in 3 years Gary is bust then we can criticize, until then give our new GM and coaching staff some time to get the kid playing football.

I feel a little better knowing that they have Gary projected at LB. He certainly has the uber-athleticism for it. If he and Smith can move around the line of scrimmage, I think we could end up having 2 elite havoc-makers...

I love Savage, didn't want Gary. Of course, the guys I did want at 12 were all gone.
I would seriously have tried to trade down and settled for the best OT we had on our board later.... at 15, 17, 20 etc.

I doubt we had to trade up for Savage, but it wasn't that much, and if he ends up like Nick Collins as I believe he can, we won't miss those 2 picks in the 100's.

I actually saw Savage in a game last year at Maryland when I was out there for the Packers crappy game at the Redskins in the rain that weekend, going to the Gophers at Terps game. Savage looked like the premium athlete on the field, almost like a UMichigan Charles Woodson athlete. I had no idea he'd end up a Packer.

Gary has talent. You don't get to be the #1 recruit in the USA going to any college you want (just in 2016) without being a helluva specimen. I just hate getting guys with shoulder worries already. See Kevin King, who our medical seems to have failed us on. Or else King is just a Queen.

Shoulder must be fine because he completed 27 reps on the bench press. I don't have a problem with this draft pick because his athletic ability could blossom with the players he will have around him. I saw film on him where he looped around on stunts and he looked unstoppable.

That move by the Steelers was one we could have made all day.. and I just can't convince myself that Gary would be better for us than Bush. I guess they're banking on Burks to make that jump, or plan on adding someone else later on. I think Gary's versatility is a huge plus, and with the right training we could have something big... Or were gonna look back and just be sick that we passed on Burns and Sweat(2x) ... I think that Savage pick is going to be very solid, but I think we gave up too much.. Gruden at #27 was the only real risk of Savage being taken IMO, radther trade up to #27 than #21.. but we'll see in a couple years if this was all worth it!

OLB is a premium position. ILB is not.

According to Devin Bush, Rashan Gary should have been taken before Devin Bush. I don't know if he actually believes that. But he did say it.

Or so I saw a few people report yesterday night . I didn't actually hear Bush say that.

I mean, I guess the idea of Gary at OLB isn't bad IF he can drop back and not get lost in zone, and can cover a wheel route with a Cohen type RB. Im growing on this pick though.. I'm now aware Gary was facing TRIPLE teams.. and that makes me wonder if Bush wasn't able to capitalize on Gary's work. If that's the case, that's a whole different outlook on the man. I also hear things about his lack of motor or drive.. but seeing him last night, he looked like a man who's life just changed and was eager to get to GB.

The potential is HUGE!!! I'm taking LT huge. Now it's up the Pettine to bring it out.

According to the Packers, the reason why Gary's production didn't match up with his athletic ability was because he was often double teamed. Now about the shoulder injury, Gary admitted he HAD a labrum injury, which means he still HAS a labrum injury, that type of thing doesn't heal without surgery. The scouting report I read said he lacks the lateral movement and bend to effectively get around the edge and needs to work on other moves besides a bull rush. I believe this guy is going to be a project.

He already is a project. Gary’s best position would be a DE in a 4-3. He’s undersized for a D lineman in the 3-4 so the Packers will (AGAIN) teach a college D lineman to play OLB.

Hope he can pass cover and play zone run D in space. All he ever did at MI was bull rush. One move NFL tackles will stone you with.

You look at Gary's combine performance and you wonder, why not play him at LB? Well, apparently that's exactly what Pettine wants to do, which makes this an exciting pick to me. With Gary roaming the line of scrimmage and Savage roaming the back end, that's a huge amount of space-eating, disruptive athleticism the Packers have just added to their defense.

Looking forward to a couple of nice picks on the offensive side of the ball tomorrow...

It always worries me a bit when you move a guy around. He may have been on the line because Michigan needed him there in order to get their best mix of talent on the field. My hope is that this was the case and they checked this out with the Michigan coaches. There are certainly times when he appears to have started a play standing up, and he looks good doing it.

We’ find out soon enough if Gary is another Kevin King. They gave up both fourth rounds for Savage, not a big fan. Why does this team keep high drafting defense when their offense needs help? Wasn’t big fan of last year’s draft; this team appears to be headed back to 70s and 80s

Because the two times in my life time when this team has won a Super Bowl they had playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Because this defense had no credible safeties after Ha-Ha was traded away (and yes, I understand his drawbacks, but good lord, there was nothing there without him).

Because they spent a truckload of cash on #12 so he needs to carry the offense.

Because MVS and ESB are pretty damn good, and Adams is great.

Because #12 holding the ball too long and not taking check-downs makes the OL look worse than they really are, and they picked up a starting G/fill-in RT in FA.

Because the two best TEs in this class flew off the board at too rich of a price, and so they'll make do in the 2nd or 3rd.

Gary is Kevin King? That is crazy talk.

Let’s wait and see before we judge. Several nice defensive free agent signings and 2 first round defensive picks , the defense is much improved already.

Prior to the draft, I read the CHTV compilation of guys the writers did NOT want us to pick. Had to laugh as Rashad Gary was number one on the list. Personally, I am not a fan. If your college stage and body of work didn't yield result, then why expect results on a bigger stage. Sorry, this is a reach. Would have preferred a trad down and more picks of better value.

I do like the Savage pick. The night would have been a win with Savage at a trade down pick and an additional 2 or 3rd round.

I have a feeling Gute will be kicking back after the draft with his feet up while drinking a beer and laughing his @ss off at all the negative comments on here and other websites. I mean seriously if you have put in all the time along with all your scouts and feel very strongly about Gary and Savage you are confidant in your choices. Put yourself in Gute's shoes...you know following the draft you would kick back and have a beer laughing your @ss off at everyone's negative comments. Own it!

I know I certainly would and I would laugh each time I read how stupid I was at drafting these guys when all the commentators have no idea what they are talking about since they have not invested the time and had the access they have had to players, coach reviews, etc.

I have to believe in Gute & LF until such time they demonstrate they are not capable. Fingers crossed Gary & Savage really help solidifying the defense and pushing it to a top 5 defense in 2019.

PS: Damn I really wanted Fant and Oliver!

Gary is a risk, but Gute is looking for extreme athletes on defense. Jaire, Burks, Gary, Savage all fit the profile (Josh Jackson not so much).

I see this as a “swarm” effect. If everyone on D is a great athlete, then the unit can’t be neutered by stopping individual players. This is somewhat similar to how the Rams have operated, and how the Niners are building their defense.

As to any work ethic problems, that won’t be a problem.

Always funny after the draft to read reactions. Everyone has their favorites, but down the road half of these “can’t miss” first rounders that everyone is crying over are busts and many 4th and 5th rounders across the league are stars. Put out the fires and put away the pitch forks. As a Michigan grad, I can say that if Gary had played Bush’s position in college he would have been way more productive. I usually hate to see position changes, but Gary has all the traits to be an outstanding linebacker. If they were planning to play him on the line, I wouldn’t be as excited. Give this kid a chance. He has JPeppers-like freak abilities. I’m sure Gute did his homework.

How many times must I says this... but there is not real BPA!

You draft according to your team needs! You draft based on your team. Not some nebulous "BPA". You draft the best player available for your team!

Packer's defense has stunk for years! It needed to be upgraded "Big Time", soooo....you draft accordingly.

Upgraded the OL is next (some of that is being done but more is necessary. Upgrading both guards positions (which we are currently in the process. Now a RT. After that then TE and special guys!

For me, "plays with hair on fire" evokes images of a guy standing there screaming while smacking his own head in an attempt to put the fire out. Nothing about that phrase says high performance to me because of how fast hair burns. But I do get the intent of the phrase : )

I believe Packers fans should have some faith in Gutekunst and his staff with respect to having done their due diligence on Gary. Obviously the Packers would have made sure that his shoulder has healed and does not require surgery. Further Gary is stronger, heavier, and almost as fast as Burns who is more properly seen as an edge rusher. The risk comes in being able to harness his outstanding athletic skill and turn him into the elite player that many people believe he has the potential of becoming. But as Aaron Nagler is fond of reminding us, "Nobody knows anything" when it comes to predicting how these draft picks will turn out. It comes to trusting one's research and judgement.

As far as Savage is concerned, most draft analysts believe he has the speed and aggressiveness to provide the Pack with the free safety they need to go along with Amos. These two picks are solid.

Could have gotten a RB in the 4th or given Cleveland a 4th for Duke Johnson. Whatever, I'm sick.

Go BUCKS!!

The Pack also has an excellent shot at landing a top talent in the second round:

Here are the top players still available:

Byron Murphy, CB, Washington

Cody Ford, OT, Oklahoma

Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida

D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss

Greedy Williams, CB, LSU

Dalton Risner, OL, Kansas State

Nasir Adderley, S, Delaware

Hakeem Butler, WR, Iowa State

Irv Smith Jr., TE, Alabama

Deebo Samuel, WR, South Carolina

Take the best remaining OL in the second between Risner, Ford or Taylor in that order.

If they all go by #44, take the best WR left on the Packers board.

Please don't say "if they're all gone". Not getting Risner or Taylor would be very disappointing .

I think we were all almost in agreement that 3rd year I believe for Davante was getting pretty iffy with all those dropped passes, but we knew he was fighting thru ankle injuries. So, happy he has now exceeded expectations.

I think Gute is taking a page from the strong defense helps the offense playbook. Build up the defense so things will be easier on the offense not having to score 50 week in and out to win games.

I will give Gary the hope and belief that he is worth the #12 pick. The guys I would have preferred were gone at 12. My fear is Gary looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. He is by far not the worst pick the pack could have chosen. I am also glad we did not reach for any O-line duds. We did not over pay for the Iowa TE's, pick a running back, add an unneeded wide receiver, or pick a sucky QB in the first round. So you see it could have been worse.

The 11 teams in front of the Pack for the most part(Clelin Ferrell, Daniel Jones) picked the best players. I believe we picked the best positions of need Safety, & best defensive player at the draft's strength. My choice would not have been Gary, but who am I?

I thought @ pick 12 we should get a player that will play right away every day, a player who will play every down like it is his last, a player with out any red flags like an injury. The best ability of a great player is his AVAILABILITY. Is Gary that player? IMO no.

Keep the faith, a draft is not just about the first pick that will make it a successful draft. The Pack has more bullets to shoot. Fire away.....and hit something!

Good points. My biggest concern re: Gary is the shoulder. Is it a torn labrum as reported or is it a subluxation as Gary stated in his interview. If the latter, he is probably completely recovered and a non-issue. If a torn labrum, they never heal and require corrective surgery. So the question is which is it? My suspicion is it is a torn labrum but Gary is reluctant to have surgery so he is calling it a subluxation. Small tears can be ignored for a while and that is probably what he is dealing with.

I too was not enameled with the Gary pick, however he has the measurable that if placed into a scheme that can maximize his talents and he gets coached up I think he will surprise all the pundits and nay sayers. I absolutely loved the Savage pick. He was the number1 safety on my board and I had him mocked to the Packers at 30. If you follow some of the writers and talking heads on twitter, Savage was being projected as a 1st round pick and according to them, Baltimore and Indy were both looking to draft him. Gutey trading up was an absolute necessity if he viewed him as a difference maker for their defense.

Nick Perry was an athletic freak at DE so the Packers made him play OLB.

History does repeat.
