Green Bay's Defensive Line is Starting to Shine
Green Bay's defensive line has been a key part of the team's recent wins over the Los Angeles Rams and Miami Dolphins.
By markoldacres
During Green Bay’s three-game win streak, the offense has taken the lion share of the plaudits, with Aaron Rodgers and his cohorts finally resembling a cohesive unit which can put up points versus any opponent.
However, for their last two victories, the Packers also have their defense, and specifically, their defensive line, to thank.
It wasn’t too long ago that the Packers’ defensive front appeared to be the soft underbelly of the team. Kenny Clark was underperforming and to make matters worse, there was little help being given by his teammates.
The Packers surrendered more than 500 rushing yards to the Eagles and Bears over a two-game stretch, and at that time it was worth questioning why an opposing offensive co-ordinator would ever bother to call a pass play. But that’s all changed in the last two games.
Not only does Clark look back to his best (as often happens around this time in the season), but he’s also been getting some support from his fellow big men.
Jarran Reed had by far his best game as a Packers against the Dolphins on Christmas Day and rubberstamped it with a key fumble recovery which helped tilt the game in Green Bay’s favour.
The emergence of Devonte Wyatt has also given the D-line a boost. The 2022 first-round pick has been showing his draft pedigree of late.
Wyatt was given more playing time versus Miami, and his freakish athleticism from the interior was a thorn in the side of Mike McDaniel’s offense.
It has taken longer than most Packers fans would’ve liked for Wyatt, a 24-year-old rookie, to earn frequent snaps, but the former Georgia man may be arriving just in time to add some dynamism to Green Bay’s defense down the stretch.
No-one can replace Rashan Gary, but Wyatt’s ability to wreck a play at any moment could help fill the void.
While they may be unspectacular, Dean Lowry and TJ Slaton are important cogs in Green Bay’s front as well.
Both Lowry and Slaton are steady presences who can be trusted on the ‘eat your vegetables’ downs, allowing Wyatt to then enter the fray and go hunting in more obvious pass situations.
The Packers faced the daunting task of slowing down the Dolphins on offense and got the job done. The defensive line was a vital part of that, and the unit will need to continue to ascend in the final two regular season games if Green Bay is to complete its improbable run to the playoffs.

The DL, including OLBs, are beginning to have a huge turn-around. Part of the defense's great performance in the second half was the increased playing time for Devonte Wyatt. He has truly come around, especially in the pass rush; he probably just needed some time to get used to the NFL.
Reed and Clark have returned to top form. Slaton has had some good moments as well, and is a good run stuffer.
I disagree about Lowry. He isn't very fundamentally sound, and has a tendency to get pushed around. He is not a very good run defender.
I would like to see more of the 350 lb NT Jonathan "The Ford" Ford. I want to see how he holds up as a run-stuffer. It would be nice to have him sprinkled into the DL rotation, especially on early downs or running downs.

He just needed to be on the field. He knocked people on their asses for three seasons in the SEC. Lowry needs to be a DE /six tech out of a 4-2 set.

D-Line is average at best, D Lowry is weak. You want to beat the Packers run the ball at D Lowry wherever he is lined up and throw over the middle, Packers D cannot cover the middle of the field. You want to see a good defensive team watch the 49ers.

This is an avg defense. IMO there is a lack of speed. I would not be shocked to see Jefferson race pass the corners and take on a slow and useless Amos. Could be Field day for the vikes.. way too many fast receivers and tight ends to cover. Speed kills and the vikes have it all over the place.
Season ends on Sunday.
Douglas has two inteception against Tua. Where has he by even the other 14 games. Stokes is a moron. Team is lucky to have the record it does

How fast would you say Waddle and Hill are and what happened after the 2nd half, once the Packers made adjustments? Also, Stokes is a moron says the commenter who obviously doesn't know he's been on IR since week 9.

Fub,
Do you even know what Jefferson runs? You keep talking about him like he is fast. He isn't! He is a pedestrian 4.44 in the 40 yard coming out. What makes Jefferson amazing is his route tree, hands, and a bunch of intangibles, but it isn't speed.

This is intellectually lazy.
The "lack of speed" argument is far outdated. You can't just regurgitate the arguments from 3, 4, 5 years ago, because rosters are tumultuous and personnel flips quickly in the NFL.
Combine average 40 times by position over last 5 years, and Packers players times:
Inside Linebacker (4.76)
Quay Walker 4.52,
Devondre Campbell 4.57
Outside LInebacker (4.60) - **Defensive End (4.80)
(Listing both OLB and DE 40 times due to 3-4 alignment)
Rashan Gary 4.61 (Blazing for man this size!)
Preston Smith 4.74
Kingsley Enagbare 4.87
Jonathan Garvin 4.82
Cornerback (4.48)
Jaire Alexander 4.38
Eric Stokes 4.25 (blazing!)
Rasul Douglas 4.59
Keisean Nixon 4.42
Shemar Jean-Charles 4.52
Strong Safety (4.55)
Adrian Amos 4.39
Dallin Leavitt 4.56
Tariq Carpenter 4.52
Free Safety (4.53)
Darnell Savage 4.36
Rudy Ford 4.39
Innis Gaines 4.54

Oppy,
My point is Jefferson's speed is nothing special or out of the ordinary in the NFL. Watson runs a 3.6, while Bo Melton runs a 3.4 in the 40-yard. Even Toure runs a 4.4 as does Jefferson. However, my main point is we have players in the defensive backfield who are quite a bit faster than Jefferson, but he still destroys them because of his intangible skills. You could say the same thing about Adam's as his speed was about the same or even slightly slower than Jefferson.
Cornerback (4.48)
Jaire Alexander 4.38
Eric Stokes 4.25 (blazing!)
Rasul Douglas 4.59

Adrian Amos 4.39

Darnell Savage 4.36
Rudy Ford 4.39

Reed had a good game. He’s actually had a few where he’s not being asked to stuff the run primarily. Lowry went out and that allowed us to get more from Slaton and Wyatt. As in previous games, both have looked more robust and more of a threat. Both should be getting more snaps but weren’t really getting serious numbers until injury forced it. Clark has been much more himself over the last month, though he wasn’t at his best yesterday on first viewing.
What does that tell us? The game suited Reed: despite his size he’d much better when allowed to disrupt. Other than that, injury simply forced us to do what play has long suggested and play more of Slaton and Wyatt. Is that the D line really gelling?
In my view this is not yet the emergence of a better DL. It was a game that played to our DL’s strength and not its weakness: the Dolphins hardly ran it. However, I think that if the coaches learn we are better with a group of Clark, Reed, Slaton and Wyatt and no Lowry against the run as well as the pass, but do I trust the coaches to not return to the status quo? Sadly not if Lowry is healthy. A caution though: we may be better, but none of those players are top line run players either, just better than Lowry.

100% correct about coaching staff only using Wyatt and Slaton more because of injuries. This staff has shown they lack the insight to insert new players into problem areas until basically forced to by circumstances. Example #2: Not using Nixon earlier on returns. #3- Not replacing Sammy Watkins earlier. #4- Not replacing Darnell Savage earlier. It seems they don't want to admit and then fix errors until forced to.

"However, I think that if the coaches learn we are better with a group of Clark, Reed, Slaton and Wyatt..." Right there is the problem. The coaches are slow to learn. Lowry is regularly either pushed around or knocked on his ass and the 'coaches haven't learned yet." LaFleur is either blind or clueless.

They are going to have to move Clark to his best position, 0 and 1 technique. If that makes him the highest paid nose tackle in NFL history both for now and for the next half decade, so be it. It also means he should play 60% of the snaps with a 50 snap limit.
Reed's best position is probably 4 technique. Ditto for Wyatt. Ditto for Lowry if it isn't 5T. Slaton hasn't made any jump is a somewhat below average. Reed is just okay as used. He gets moved far too often to play inside at 3T. He does flash some juice fairly regularly, so he is up and down.
Walker had one tackle, and it was an assist. Campbell had 3 tackles. O-linemen getting out and destroying them. DBs leading the team with tackles. Not good.

I'm not really understanding the Slaton love over the last 2 days. A lot of "I told you so" with him even though he's still really inconsistent. The potential is there but he lets O linemen get into his body too much still. He can make a mess when he's single blocked but that normally isn't going to be the case. Maybe getting him and Clark on the field together singles him up more, he made a couple big run stops against the Bears. But it was the Bears.
Definitely wouldn't mind seeing the DL do this with more consistency. Reed holds the DT up, Slaton gets great push and separates pretty quickly and Clark just blasts in and big boys the pile.

Slaton is up and down, but he has ups that are lacking from other alternatives and the downs seem to be diminishing in frequency (on a smallish sample).
We don’t have a true NT. Clark slimed down and has been less effective, Slaton and Reed are big but much better disrupting. However, we are better with those three and Wyatt rotating because they are all more robust than Lowry and they are capable of disrupting more effectively in non obvious pass situations. In Wyatt’s case, he’s just more of a threat athletically on pure pass downs too.
We need a true nose—it’s not Clark these days. Ford is an unknown so unless he’s another hidden gem it isn’t happening this year. So play to disrupt and play the best rotation at it rather than pretending otherwise. If we aren’t great run stuffers, at least make the OL hesitate. We have a weakness. Accept that minimize it and then play to our strengths. Accept that what Lowry brings us is secondary and can be provided by others who have less weakness in the run game. Get the most out of what you have: play smart.

They ran it 8 times in 21 plays in the 2nd half. Seems like a perfectly acceptable ratio considering the passing game averaged over 12 yards per attempt. They did go away from it in the 1st half but that's kind of understandable, they thought they could land the knockout blow.

My #1 player I wanted the Packers to draft in 2022 was Jameson William's. Then #2 was Wyatt at DE. My third choice was Pickens.
I'm really happy we got Wyatt and expect huge returns. They need to draft another big ugly early in 2023.

Should clarify...I wanted both William's and Wyatt. I wanted Wyatt with our #1 choice, and I had hoped since William's was injured and out the 1st half of the season we could trade up and get him in round 1and get a steal!

The Pack run the team comparable to a good old boys club. It's not that Wyatt needed time to get ready, it's just the coaching staff being unwilling to play the best player at each position in favor of the established player.
As alluded to earlier: 1) Dean Lowry has been average or less for quite some time. 2) Taking over half the season to jettison Amari Rodgers and play Nixon-there is no way the coaches did not see Nixon's talent earlier. 3) Sammy Watkins should have been let go or demoted after week 3. 4) Taking over half the season to demote Savage. 5) Waiting until Stokes is injured to move Douglas back to his more natural position. 6) OL changes should have been decided in preseason and ready to go by week 1. Tom > Newman.
Packers should be playing the best player regardless if they are a rookie or veteran.

I think that LaFleur really struggles to demote. Once a guy is in he has to be absolutely horrendous over and over before he’s removed (Savage). Typically anything short of enforced injury absence won’t lead to replacement and the former starter will return regardless. We don’t reward good play as basic practice suggests, we stick with our guys once they are in long after results suggest otherwise. That’s just crazy coaching. It makes me wonder if it took Gute to prevent Watkins getting back out there and Rodgers getting more chances. I believe LaFleur would have felt compelled to give them more shots.

This article seems a bit premature. The Dolphins did average 5.8 YPC on 10 runs in the 1st half and there were times the pass rush was non-existent and Tua made them pay for it. The run D stiffened considerably in the 2nd half. Without looking at the All 22 I'm not willing to say it was simply because Lowry was taken out of the equation but there could be some truth to that.

Wyatt at nose with Clark and Slayton is best combo, rotate in Reed, keep Lowery on the bench.

If Lowry is out I wouldn't be surprised to see Ford active but he's a situational only NT. You don't want him on the field much against a throw 1st team.
They could also bring up Slayton to replace Lowry. He had his moments in the preseason and being healthy late in the season can be an advantage against guys that have played all year.

Agree Cold.
We have really ignored the nose which makes no sense to me since we run a 3-4. You need a great nose tackle that can plug the middle with a 3-4.
The Packers need to draft a true NT next year and put Clark and Wyatt next to the nose.

Slaton could be that guy with more consistency. He still needs to work on his hand usage but shows flashes. I wouldn't mind seeing them add some day 3 competition but on a team that can actually stop the run the NT is on the field less than half the time and Clark will still see snaps there.

It was a busy Christmas Day, so I recorded the game and rewatched it.
It reaffirmed to me how dangerous the Packers could be in the playoffs IF the O can cure their Red Zone dysfunction and the D keeps winning the turnover battle because it is the only way Barry's D will stop any offense. Without the T/Os, this is a very bad D. Turnovers paper over a lot of holes.
Two big ifs. Improvement in the RZ offense is possible. Expecting the D to win the turnover battle is unlikely.
Two developments saved the D: 4 turnovers and the Packer O keeping the D off the field. Packers had 20 more plays on O than Miami, chewed the clock and scored.
The first half showed how bad Barry's defense can be. The second half was fun with the turnovers but now reading the QB was playing with a concussion which probably explains his terrible throws that saved the game along with Reed's great forced fumble.
I also have no clue why Barry (and MLF) continue to give Lowry snaps over Wyatt. Lowry is terrible. He gets rag dolled on almost every play.
And the other head scratcher is Amos. His decline is sad to see on the field. He is a liability at S. Some his age lose a step...he has lost several. Never even in the receivers zip code. And he is playing very timid and avoids tackles if he can. I wonder if he is all dinged up or just in the eventual decline all players see. Too bad....I like AA the man...but he is adding to Barry's mess with the Safeties. First Savage, now Amos.

Wyatt looked like he was on roller skates most of the season, but it looks like he's starting to perform better. We will need another good performance against a better O line, and we need to corral Cook.

I never wish injuries on anyone (what goes around comes around) -- so I wish Lowry well.
At the same time, I'm in the camp with most of you that I've been wanting to see Wyatt rotated in more. Unfortunately, the only reason it happened was due to Lowry's injury....not the coaching staff seeing his potential talent.
Now that the staff's hand has been forced, I can only hope it yields more snaps for Wyatt. Lowry, on the other hand, is a free agent in March. I'd be surprised if they brought him back again. Maybe, if only on a 1 year prove it deal, but I'd imagine that the Packers will let him test the market.
Reed is here on a one year prove it deal and I think he's proven he's worth keeping around at the right price. If he wants to stay and isn't demanding some insane contract, then I'd much rather have him back and let Lowry walk.
Safety is a mess. Amos was great his first 3 seasons, but he looks toast now. So he'll walk in free agency, but Savage also seems lost somehow and will be on his 5th year option....you'd have to think the Packers might draft a Safety in the 1st round come next April/May (always a defensive pick, right? :) Either that or bring back Rudy Ford and pair him with Savage....and then draft a safety later in the draft (it doesn't appear to be a great safety class anyway).
