Gut Reactions: In the stands for Packers-Bears

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers win over the Bears.

  • It had been ten years since I'd been to a game at Lambeau as a fan and man, what a surreal experience.
  • Aaron Rodgers is an absolute master of his craft.
  • Preston Smith just keeps delivering.
  • Rasul Douglas. That's it.
  • They should call Tyler Ervin. Tonight.
  • To all the folks who've asked me over the last few months why Dennis Kelly is on the team - tonight is why.
  • I hope Mo Drayton is renting.
  • I love the Green Bay Packers.
  • Go Pack Go.

I hope Drayton is renting by the hour.

Amari Rodgers will get another year. However, such abject failure means it might only be one more year of grace rather than the three years most third round picks can expect.

I don't know that Amari Rodgers was drafted specifically to return punts as much as to be a slot type receiver who's also big enough to stoutly block as this offense requires its receivers to do.

He's clearly not been reliable as a return specialist. Can he contribute as a WR? Hard to say, since Rodgers (Aaron) has all but said he's not interested in having Amari on the field (I don't have time to train a young guy how to play slot).

With Adams most likely gone, and moreover, with Rodgers most likely gone, I think Amari Rodgers starts seeing playing time in 2022.

He looks like he has the yips. His confidence is shot, he’s over thinking. He really needs to be shut down and given time to get comfortable in the NFL in my view. He seems like a guy who needs to believe he belongs and doesn’t at this point.

Agreed. They need to narrow his responsibilities and start building him back up...unfortunately, that's not necessarily what you hope to be doing with play snaps when you're competing for the #1 seed.

I wish I could think that he's just a wide-eyed rookie overwhelmed by the environment. But to me he shows zero physical "pop" at all - no speed, no burst, no strength, no quickness, no explosion etc. Even when a guy has lost confidence it seems you can still see some passing glimpses of his skills. I don't think I've ever watched Amari and said, "Right there... if you could just get him to harness what he did right there..." Sad to say it, but to me he just seems so pedestrian.

I see NOTHING in Amari! I have a suspicion he is the offenses version of Oren Burkes. I hope I am wrong. In a perfect season the Pack would be able to park him on the bench until next season. Unfortunately with the amount of injuries at the wr position I'm afraid we will continue to see him on the field in some capacity.

My opinion was that he was bolstered by an outstanding college roster. He didn't look special then...but he was attached to the Packers early in draft season and most pundits seemed to think that pick was perfectly natural when it happened.

A. Rodgers is being ruined by Drayton. Drayton's coaching is turning a 3rd round pick with exciting potential given college into a guy you cut. Rodgers confidence playing football is shot. He looks like a kid who is terrified stepping on the field for the first time.

Rodgers should be on the PS, at best. His snaps are either worthless (offense) or damaging (STs).

ML is being simply stupid and stubborn for keeping Drayton as ST coach. Maybe Gutey is giving him a few ST coaching candidates from the college or HS ranks.

Expensive lesson for Matt Lafleur. Odds are both Barry and Drayton are gone next year. Lafleur knows he made a mistake with Barry, and Drayton is part of an ongoing problem that goes all the way back to the early days of the McCarthy era.

Agree on Amari. He has that bust look to him...

Not that the special teams would be great apart from him. I mean, when world renowned ball catcher MVS is fielding the onside kick for your hands team, you know that you have problems.

Some of this is due to the decimation of the roster because of injury, but still this is embarrassing. The good news is that a fair number of super bowl winners have gotten by with sub-par special teams. The Packers were 29th according to Gosselin when they won in 2010.

While the other special teams really suck, the punter is not the problem. Maybe you forgot the 65 yarder he kicked that the punt team blew? Not bad for a 35 degree night.

The punter had one bad kick but the others were more than adequate.

Another example of how numbers can distort reality. Numbers are part of the picture but not the whole picture.

My take is he is not very bright. Cant focus on catching the ball on punts, makes terrible decisions to run the ball out of the end zone when he get the ball on the 25 and the fact he aint playing any slot when we need someone to play it with Cobb gone says a lot.
Its game 13. If by now he cant play even a little slot with training camp, pre season and 13 games means something and I think its Rodgers doesnt think this guy is very good and can cut it.

Great win! A dominant performance by the Packers especially in the 2nd half. Aaron Rodgers is the best handler of the football since Johnny Unitas and he may even be better than Unitas at executing fakes, etc.

Excellent use of Dillon in the second half. Defense was superb in the second half.

Special Teams are are actually getting worse as the season goes on. This must be addressed by the time we reach the playoffs. We cannot allow our season to be lost because we can’t cover punts or because we can’t catch a punt. Our STs have reached the point where they are not even at a HS level of play.

On to Baltimore. GPG! Thanks, Since ‘61

I was thinking that if GB has trouble with Justin Fields running, they are going to need a very good plan for Lamar Jackson. I don't think much of Jackson as a throwing QB - not sure he is much better than Fields in that department, but up until this year Jackson has limited his interceptions.

I was surprised by this. They also went light (see DB snap counts), although most of the second half was played with a significant lead. that was perhaps the best subterfuge on a fake handoff i've ever seen. switched the ball to his left hand and perfectly positioned his body to hide the ball. never seen him do that before or at least never seen it done so effectively.

coverage units. man. have to wonder if the concussion to EQ affected them that badly. that punt to the 5 yard line was amazing. no possible way that guy should have gotten free, let alone scored. MVS on the onside kick was pathetic. Taylor fumbling out of bounds on a kick that was headed out of bounds on it's own. that's not Drayton's fault. that is pure execution. MLF was pretty defensive last night after a blowout win.

The way this offense looks when they establish the run is so superior to when it's pass heavy, I simply can't understand how the gameplan every week isn't to start out run heavy, get the run going, pepper in the play action pass game, and keep running the ball.

It's good for the RBs. It's good for the OL. It's good for clock management. It's good for the defense. And it's good for Aaron Rodgers.

It's how the damn offense is designed to operate. What's the problem?

My guess it goes something like this -

MLF to AR - here's the game plan, we are going to do what works and run the ball to open the passing game.
AR to MLF - how about we score big with deep passes from the start and if that doesn't work in the first half, we'll try it your way in the second half.
MLF to AR - ok, we have to keep you happy.

We've seen this too many times already.

I tend to agree with you. Rodgers is likely driving the game planning with Matt being intimidated by him...afraid to upset his fragile ego. Fortunately Rodgers is passing well, but to ignore the high octane run game is all on Matt who is trending into MM territory.

MM always squawked about how the Packers needed to run more and pass out of play action, then played out of shotgun and passed 70% of the time, 30% to the perimeter as Rodgers would check from a run to a pass play and MM let him do it.

I didn't mean to criticize Bojorquez, although I can see where that might come from. Other than his OOB punt, his punts looked good to me. The punt that was fielded at the 3 looked like an opportunity to make Fields operate from inside the five yard line.

The 10 yard net really was meant as an indictment of the cover teams.

Drayton needs to go. It’s unit wide ineptness. We seem to see (and LaFleur did in his press conference) a game without disasters as a victory/success. It’s not. This wasn’t a first, it wasn’t an outlier, it just showed us up against a ST unit that went in to attack us.

Mo Must Go.

LaFleur needs to stop excusing the inexcusable if he wants to succeed. That was historically bad both in terms of scale and breadth of incompetence.

Yeah I thought that example in particular (fielding the kickoff before it goes out of bounds) was especially egregious. It wasn't physical inability, it wasn't a young kid nervous as hell in front of a huge crowd, it just seemed like a player who wasn't well coached and didn't even know the rules. That should never happen.

STs had at least (probably more) 5 horrible plays last night.
M Taylor's first kickoff "return"
Crosby kickoff out of bounds.
Giving up the 97-yard TD when he was pinnned inside the 5.

I totally agree that it's almost inconceivable, and that's why it's so frustrating. But how else can you explain such bone-headedness?

Of course, every time a game ends in a tie, at least a few dimwitted players chime in and say that they didn't know a game could end that way. So maybe players don't know as much as we think they do.

True about the tie, and maybe, it was coaching -- not giving reminders - but from HS on, it would seem so obvious for Taylor to let that ball go without touching it.
But yes, much as Drayton seems like a nice guy, he's gotta go if there's any competent interim replacement. STs alone could have cost us 17 or so points last night.

Packers played like a team that slept til 8---pm. Once they warmed up, they were fine. Bears clearly came in wanting to make a statement. Absent a couple gash plays and Fields' running, the Bears struggled to keep anything going though. Defense has to tighten that up.

Aaron Rodgers was surgical last night. Yes, he OWNS the Bears.

Please let Billy Turner be okay. I mean this has reached a point of ridiculous. To be honest ridiculous happened a few injuries ago, but you know what I mean.

Well, Mason seemed to kick every extra point and FG through the MIDDLE of the uprights IIRC. SO, that means any attempt from 32 yards or closer the Packers should be good to go...His kickoffs? Well that's another story.

The defense was awesome in the 2nd half.

I hope Mo Drayton's lease IS DONE, OVER, DAY TO DAY & THE LANDLORD WANTS HIM OUT. Maybe either ST assistants Rayna Stewart or Conner Lewis could be better. I mean is it possible they'd be any worse???

EVERY kick must either be out of the endzone which will be tough in January and every punt just angled out of bounds. DAMN the average.

This offense starts slow. It just does. The team also has a poor record coming out of the bye. Thank God we were playing the Bears.

Nuf said about special teams.

I got some thumbs down yesterday, probably for my comments about the OL. I called them adequate. Tell me I was wrong. Rough outing for Nijman. Very rough, but not at all unexpected. In the second half you started to see stuff like holding Lazard in the back field for added pass protection. I'm not saying these guys are horrible, but let's not kid ourselves, there are things here that will be exploited.

The Bears came out with a great offensive game plan. Tip of the cap to them. They owned the first half. Justin Fields now scares me. He threw some serious balls. Yes, he made plenty of mistakes, but he will get better. If I had to bet money on who will be the best QB in the NFC North in 2022, I know where I'd put mine.

There was one good special teams play.
On the Amari muff, the Bear gunner ran OB and got flagged. Did you notice Rasul raise his arms as he was blocking the guy to show the ref he wasn't pushing him out?
Talk about having your head in the game.

Never thought I’d long for the good old days of Slocum and Zook, yet here we are.

I see some comments here about how the injuries might have filtered down to special teams and that contributes to their amateur performance. I don't buy it. There are huge injuries on the OL and they keep playing good football. So many missed games by key defensive players and the D still makes opponents shiver. Special teams just make them drool with delight. The difference is coaching. The subs elsewhere execute their assignments and on ST they just lie down. It is a mystery how MLF hired such good coaches elsewhere and totally whiffed on Drayton.

" Special teams just make them drool with delight."

Man, that's a serious breach of etiquette in management of oral secretions. Please see your doctor if you're drooling with delight, peeing with glee, or sneezing like no one is watching.

Had LaFleur been given the ST Coordinator he WANTED to hire in the first place we wouldn't be here now. Now myself and others can argue the point whether Rizzo would have signed the deal if it was in front of him or not, but Russ Ball insulted him so much with their offer it didn't matter the Packers came back and tried to give him what he originally wanted.

The insult and damage was done Rizzon went on to sign with the Saints. They NEVER should have allowed him out of Green Bay without a contract.

If Gute and MLF are truly serious about being a SB team the phones better be burning up today looking for help for the disaster which is the Packers special teams.

I highly doubt that Drayton will be fired during the season. However help is NEEDED!

There has to be someone, somewhere who can come in and advise Drayton! As bad as they are they need at least 4 guys to come in and help! I don't know who's available and I don't care. Anyone who has ever coached ST in the NFL is needed at this point. How much worse can it get?

I'd settle for anyone who's ever coached ST at any level, including Pop Warner, as long as he was a success. Our STs are beyond terrible.

Going back all the way to Mike Sherman the Packers haven't brought in people only for special teams.

Is anyone teaching basic lane protection? What the hell do they work on?

How can a kicker as good as Mason Crosby start to look so shaky?

Matt LF needs to really make an impact on ST if he wishes to have this team beat Tampa Bay, etc.

Crosby is done. His leg is shot and he got old. For a while I thought the holder and long snapper but now its him. Even his extra points are shaky.
One thing I can say for Zimmer, he replaces a guy like Crosby in a heart beat and has a new kicker on Tuesday ready to kick on Sunday. You miss kicks, you kick for someone else.

Have they learned nothing from the 2015 special teams disaster in Seattle in the championship game? You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Seems like its every season with the special teams on the Packers. As much as it has been great watching the offense and defense play this year, I cringe when the special teams step on the field. A good portion of the Bears success last night was the primo field position they had on multiple occasions due to piss poor coverage by the ST's. I really hope they find a way to address this, or all the SB talk will be just another up in smoke dream in January.

IF the Packers don't fire MO, what message does it send to the team? It says it's ok to keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results ( the definition of insanity). Look how the defense improved by changing coordinators. IT........... IS............TIME, MO HAS TO GO.

Unlike most other Packers fans, I like Mo. I blame the players not the coach. One can be the best coach in the world but it’s up to the players to perform. The Packers used to keep players who were marginal in skill yet outstanding on special teams. And sometimes it’s just bad luck.

A win is a win!
If we don't get the keystone cops( special teams) fixed our chances of success in the playoffs and the ultimate prize go down.
Don't understand the play calls in the first quarter. Empty backfield, few runs.
Glad we punched the Bear's muzzle in the 2nd half.
Bears still suck!
GPG!

Wish the Pack fans would have found Collingsworhless and told him a thing or three. The guy never shuts up. He has no idea what STFU for at least a minute, take a breath, RELAX means. He's blabbing about Rodgers and the Pack Org working things out and the dam game is going on.
He is doing his damdest to prove, I am the all knowledgeable grand pooh bah of the broadcast booth.
Please get rid of him, he is horrid.

That special teams display might have been the worst I've ever seen in one game:

1. Crosby kicks it out of bounds
2. Rodgers decides to try to field a kick off going out of bounds and pins the Packers at the 5
3. Coverage units gave up 259 combined yards on kick-off and punt returns: 128 to Kahlil Herbert and 3 punt returns for 143 yds for Jakeem Grant, not to mention his TD
4. Rodgers miffs a kick-off right off his chest and into a Bears player's arms, only for it be nullified by a lucky penalty on duh Bears
5. MVS gets an onside kick right to him, but pulls a Brandon Bostick special and miffs it

This looked like a unit that came off a bye week, but without ANY practice. I've never seen so many mental errors in one game.

People can try to downplay or poo poo this, but it's a dark omen for what's to come in the playoffs. Nagler said today that Tampa had the worst special teams last season, but I don't see any way the Packers win a Super Bowl playing like this. If Amari Rodgers can't handle punts in December at Lambeau then what makes you think he can handle it under the bright lights of an NFC title game? Or a Super Bowl for that matter??

Been a big fan of AJ Dillon since he was drafted. Continue to be a fan but WHY doesn't he cover the ball with both hands properly securing it when he is being gang tackled and in the middle of a pile? Watch how Aaron Jones covers the ball with both hands while Dillon doesn't. This is basic fundamentals and it sadly will bite the Packers some day at a very unfortunate time.
