Gut Reactions: Packers offense shows up to beat Lions

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers win over the Lions on Monday Night Football.

  • Amazing what happens when you run the ball.
  • Not so amazing when they go shotgun spread and go three and out.
  • Joe Barry has never played Madden.
  • Or coordinated a good defense.
  • Saw some of the good and bad from Stokes tonight.
  • Saw a lot of bad from Keving King. That said, he had nice coverage on that one play at the end of the first half.
  • Nothing like a game in the rain for the dome team.
  • Wasn't a fan of getting away from the running game after they were up one score.
  • Rashan Gary played better than Twitter thinks he did.
  • They win when they run.
  • They have a punter.
  • No, this defense we saw tonight can't win a  Super Bowl. Thankfully, this was not the Super Bowl.
  • Go Pack Go.

Thanks to Zeus for the rain, and Jared Goff’s slippery little hands for doing their part to help the LOLions offense beat themselves. LOLions fans must view the schedule expansion to 17 games as cruel and unusual punishment.

Joe Barry still has a lot of energy. D got some stops *and* turnovers. 12 made some incredible throws. The win feels pretty damn good, even if it was against Eastern Michigan.

defense is terrible. and needs alot of work. but stokes on the outside looks promising. king can hide in the slot against teams with no wr depth. we will see how this d does against the niners and the steelers rushing attack and short passing game. but lets be real the defense didnt really stop them the lions stopped themselves. the fumblerooski, the 4th and 1 pass to the covered man when swift was wide open the other way. stokes was promising after his early mistake for sure. the offense worked out there shit at least. but the o line is still a problem. this is not a great pass rush and they did not blitz. still got 3 sacks that i can remember. gonna be a long season that will most likely end the same way the last two have but at least rodgers has his head out of his ass and he ran the offense. they showed 2 high safetys, he ran the ball. no ego involved, just football. thats a good sign. 2 tough tests coming up.

Couldn't agree more man you basically summed up the good and bad from today's game. This defense has a lot of work to do and if 12 suck up his ego and run the ball we can have more success. The oline is still very new and will be tough task against top defenses with great pass rush.
I am hoping that the offense learnt a lesson from the embarrassing loss last week and defense learnt it's lesson from basically both the weeks and step up.

i like stokes. and king is not a traditional slot corner, but neither is sullivan. so let king plan some press man in their with a safety right behind him, because right now when he is out on that island he is a broken man. his confidence is shot and hes not a zone guy. let him just cover and maybe he can be an average corner instead of a complete liability. in all my time on this chatroom ive not seen one guy say " why dont we try king in the slot?" so gotta give joe barry at least that much credit. i thought for sure stokes went in king would go straight out, but if king can be an upgrade over sullivan, that sures up a huge hole in this defense. as bad as this defense was, im optimistic about stokes and am at least curious about king inside in the slot. we will see against deebo samuel and juju the next 2 weeks.

I'd even add that King could be effective as a blitzer out of the slot with his length. Let him be physical inside in press where officials aren't watching nearly as closely as on the sideline.

putting king in the slot turned out to be a good move at least against this team. i will say that much. he didnt really give much up inside there. and stokes made some plays. at least they made that adjustment. as for L and L, they are what we got in there unfortunately and idk what they can do right now to replace them. kenny clark made a few plays, but they need more from him. they need him to cause negative plays and be a disruptor, and he just hasnt been. if he had a partner in crime inside it might help, but this defense needs to step up. or we are in for another disapointment in january or maybe even december if they are as bad as they were in the first 6 quarters of this season.

D-line played better when King was moved to NT. Of course he was double-teamed but still was more effective than L + L. Meanwhile Keke has not impressed - leaving Clark as the only NFL legitimate d-lineman. The d-line still remains - after 3 years - the weakest link. I'm feeling less Super Bowl-ish these days.

At this stage, I don't know if they're separable - like Siamese twins. Both will have to be removed - if the D-line is not to remain as one of the worst on the League.

same story with billy winn last year. the guy would come in for 5 plays and have 2 run stuffs and a batted ball and lowry would play 80 percent of snaps and have 1 assisted tackle, i honestly think its a seniority thing. if the vet and the young buck are about equal, tie is going to go to the vet. regardless of how the fans see it.

Barry doesn’t learn. LaFleur had to verbally kick him to actually inspire some aggression and put Goff under at least some pressure. Hopefully Stokes has made one decision for him, but the Kancaster and particularly Lowry continuing mistake probably requires someone else to kick him. I have no confidence in Barry’s ability to coordinate. He seems not to learn or to have the confidence required.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I think this is Matt LaFleur's Defense, and Barry was hired to run what LaFleur wants run. I do think you're spot on that LaFleur got after Barry to show some fire with his calls/blitzes. This is definitely a work in progress, and we should take it as such, much like when LaFleur fist inserted his system on O as HC.

I firmly believe Barry will run what LaFleur wants run, and feel this D could improve quite a bit moving forward. A bit unconventional, but I think it will work in time. Everyone wanted a new system. Takes time for that to unify into a solid force no matter what. Sadly, we look a couple DL short... again.

Lancaster and Lowry had better start delivering this next game, or else. They look like dog shit. I'm sick to death of these two players killing us, for 3 years running? Pardon the pun...

1. King is bad. Stokes is better than him. Right now.
2. Gary is not living up to pick #12. He'd better get on it.
3. This defense straight up sucks.
4. Joe Barry sucks worse.
5. Run the damn ball.
6. The youth on the inside of the OL is a problem right now.
7. What happened to the year of MVS?
8. What happened to the "illusion of complexity?" To the jet motion, sweeps etc?
9. 11 personnel and 5 wide can suck my left nut.
10. What does MLF and 12 think this is, 2009? Is 12 in full on dementia at 38 years old?
11. Right now is a mediocre team... maybe below mediocre.
12. I see very little reason we won't get absolutely boat raced in SF next week.
13. "Last Dance" teams rarely accomplish their goal.
14. It's a good thing that the Lions, Lionsed it.
15. Goff sucks too.

OK. Chicken Little has vented his spleen. Yes, I know I'm acting like a spoiled fan right now. We beat the Lions by 20. I'll take it. I'll be back with a more measured take tomorrow. lol

Good to see the offense shake off that debacle against the Saints. Good to see AJones getting his this week. Need to get Dillon on track, too.

Defense just looks lost, presnap, way too often. They're going to have to start manufacturing pass rush, or they're going to play a lot of track meets.

1-0 this week. On to SF.

How many beers deep are you Nagler? Spelling errors and repeating yourself. Lol.

Kevin King WILL be replaced by Stokes in a few weeks. He gives up too many plays, out of position and I just don’t see the confidence.

Where is the pressure? One sack in two games has me a bit worried.

Need to give Dillon more touches on offense. His yards per average PROVES that.

Regardless, 1-1 and beating a division team is always a plus.

I agree. I remember King talking about how much he wanted to play there last season... I think with his size, he could find himself playing better covering slot. he doesn't have the speed, but he's got the size to adversely affect throws, and can fill some run support. Might be the best move for Kevin King and the Packers.

Packers have for ages had a defense built to play with a lead. I'm not so sure they stiffened up so much as the playing with a lead put pressure on a Lions offense that wasn't good enough to respond.

Great point…. Although, does the lead allow the D to stiffen up? Chicken/egg situation, to be sure… That’s the main reason why I am not convinced on this D quite yet; can they at some point hold up a game if the O sputters?

Lions certainly did not help themselves, but was at least kinda nice to see some semblance of pressure and rush from our D in the second half

Sorry Croat, but if Rodgers can have a 145.6 QB rating every week I would not care if he threw every pass to the same receiver. Rodgers was 22 out of 27 what is their to complain about? Seriously you are focused on the wrong issue. No QB completes 100% of his passes no matter who the receivers are.

Rodgers played well. He is going to throw to Adams, Jones, Tonyan and Cobb (when Cobb is in the game). MVS will have his days. Sometimes receivers are shut out in a game it happens. It's not intentional. Rogers knows his guys are going to get to the spot where he throws the ball. MVS still needs to run better routes and get separation from coverage. Even then Rodgers will miss him sometimes.

I don't understand what you are expecting from him? Thanks, Since '61

The offense will need to get others involved more going forward.

Yup. One step forward, one step back on that drive. Overcame two holding penalties. They really had to grind that drive out.

Edit: correction: the TD drive to open the second half did not have the penalties. That put the score at 21-17. The next drive after Detroit went for it on 4th and one and didn't make it was the drive that had the two holding penalties (Jenkins and Newman). That made the score 28-17, and gave the team some breathing room and the defense a chance to tee off a little.

Aaron Rodgers holding the ball too long and playing backyard football with continual deep passes to Davante Adams may work against the Lions, but what about the 49ers?
I'm wondering if Rodgers is temperamentally incapable of playing small ball consistently. He's a great enough passer to excel against most defenses, but is he a great enough quarterback to consistently outsmart the best defenses?

I guess it could be because of the oline being fairly new this year. Usually he struggles with interior pressure and that is where we have two rookies at.
Also him missing sometime this off season might be hurting his confidence too adn you can see this with some of the throws that he excelled last year seems to be bit overthrown this year.

Great point. Billy Turner at RT is the only player on our OL starting at his respective position in 2021. Rodgers usually gets nervous with one new player on the OL... I can't wait for Bakhtiari's healthy return so Elgton can shift back inside. Jenkins will be tested big time in these next few games.

Two rookies and a 2nd year player starting... I can understand AR's happy feet/lack of feel at times. This Packer team has a lot of new pieces that have to come together. Good to get the W with last night's solid 2nd half, but, that was against a decimated DET secondary. Onto SF. Hopefully they all built some confidence with the win. They are going to need it.

Balls to MVS were over-thrown. Not sure if that was because of Rodgers' mistake, or if MVS has lost a step these 2 games. That (loss of step) seems to be indicated by the fact that who-ever was covering him kept pace with him easily.

At the game. Three shots, only one of which the CB had outside cover. Cover 2 which he out raced the coverage on the other two. Rodgers overthrew both times MVS clearly beat the double. Interesting fact, MVS drew both under and over throughout the game, allowing Adams to have single cover. (Lazard was so open on many of his routes it wasn't even funny)

Maybe it’s his supporting class? Barry needs a kick to put Clark back at NT and play the youngsters more. Hopefully Stokes has now made it very difficult for him to be left on the bench. Let’s hope someone intervenes on the line.

What the hell even is this defense? MLF said the Rams defense was hard to prepare for. A college team could prepare for this defense. I saw nothing novel, mostly soft off coverage, very little pressure, barley even linemen stunting. What is that bullshit?

We scored 30+ points, we didn’t turn the ball over, and we won. We always win when we score 30+ and doesn’t have multiple turnovers.

Oh, the defense held Detroit to 17 points, including a second half shutout.

Pressure Goff and he has a history of such performances. Let him stand there all day and he can make things happen. This is not new to anyone except it would seem Barry. For LaFleur to have to tell him to get after the QB doesn’t bode well. For LaFleur to admit that publicly suggests this hire is a disaster already.

There was a sudden shift out of what the defense had been playing early third quarter to a nickel with King in the slot, a 2-4-5 which was their base last season. Defense is comfortable with that, and it showed both in the third and fourth quarter.

goff fumbled a snap, threw a nice crossing route to devondre campbell, and before all that threw a pass into coverage on 4th and 1 when he had an open guy if he just looked the other way. if they wouldve just ran the ball on 4th and 1, (which a smart coach wouldve done) this game couldve been much different. the packers defense did one thing right. they took king off of his island and let stokes play. but lets be real, the lions and goff shit the bed on offense in the second half. the defense is terrible, but at least they adjusted a bit. if they shut down san fran ill feel a little bit more confident. they are banged up at rb and jimmy g is not playing very well, time to go out and prove yourself defense.

Get the ball in the hands of your money players: Jones, Adams, Tonyan. Connecting on that bomb to Adams must have felt good for Rodgers. Nice blocking by the OL on the 19-yard reception by Tonyan on the first drive.

The Lions were pretty lackadaisical getting moving on their last possession of the first half. They almost seemed predetermined to settle for a field goal when they could have maybe had more if they used better clock management.

It took Barry too long to bring pressure. No sacks again, although P. Smith got close.

Nice game from Campbell overall. I don't fault him for the TD pass to Hockenson because the ball was thrown perfectly.

Notice how the defensive intensity picked up once we got the lead? Now it would be nice if that aggression and intensity were there in a measured way leading up to halftime.

It good that things are back to normal, at least for the short time being. Better be ready for some physicality next game.

This defense is only built for the lead from the offense. If the offense had a bad day then the defense is going to show it's true colors like always.

the game he was inured. yeah its kinda crazy really he hasnt really been much of a receiving threat since then. but it makes me think of guys like jarrett boykin and geronimo. they seemed like real nfl wrs for one season, and then poof. idk if its confidence, or luck, or game plan, or what but they need to throw him a wr screen or something to get him involved. these guys need to be fed to keep their confidence up. that is a very real factor week to week with young players.

How many times was he targeted? I don’t recall one. I did see him wide open a couple of times. This O was playing a very poor D and other than Jones, Adams and Tonyan, really hasn’t successfully utilized the rest of its weapons. It was obviously a much better performance against a team with a very weak D, but we were still only firing on 3 cylinders. In part that’s going with the hot hands of course, but there should be much more to come on O too.

I would add Kylin Hill to the Heros list. Would like to add Jaire too, but hard to add him when he is very seldom targeted, but that non-catch along the sideline that he covered was beautiful. His hand was right there to knock the ball out if the receiver had caught it.

Lazard is normally awesome at blocking for his team-mates. However he did have a huge whiff on blocking when he just stood there and let the defender tackle Adams right after he caught the ball.

I would add the D-Line to the Zeros too.

A win is a win and happy for this team but the d is bad and the coordinator. Too many lost souls that can’t figure out what their doing out their. Happy we won to a team that’s awful and still making mediocre quarterbacks unreal. If they win vs San Fran Maybe week 1 was a fluke. But too many holes to fix unless we bring in some free agents on the dline or ilb positions. Offense will find a rhythm but they can’t outscore everyone and maybe the d will figure out the new system. I’m not convinced watching Dallas have a real coordinator now and playing better and the lions lost with a lot of rookies on d but their coordinator sure knows the game. Glad we won but it gets harder now and we shall see if this d can do something now.

a Glimpse of the future perhaps. Stokes on the edge. King inside or even a roving Jaire .

A shutout in the 2nd half - a 4th down stop that opened up the game and 2 turnovers. Progress hopefully.

Before the game, someone tweeted how the Packers should have kept Williams and Linsley and let Jones go. Timing is everything.

No matter what twitter wants you to think you are never as bad as week 1 makes you look and never as good as the second half of game 2 makes you look. Just play and improve.

Great Game. I loved it. Jones, Adams, Tonyan! Rodgers had fun and it showed. Defense is progressing. Not Regressing. Alexander played well in the slot. I hope he stays there. Re-sign Amos.

It took some superb play from Rodgers and mistakes fsrom the Lions to win the game. A lot more work is needed to really get the Packers rolling.

And whatever happened to the crossing routes that were so successful last year??

I know they made some plays late (Stokes flashed) but the defensive MVP for me was the rain. Goff fumbling a wet ball to let the Packers go up to 35-17 was a gift. Of course game ball has to go to Aaron Jones with his ridiculous 4 total TDs. Rodgers played well overall with a couple of absolutely vintage throws.on the key drive to start the third quarter (that laser to Tonyan for the TD absolutely blows my mind).

The offense had the get-right game they were looking for, even if it wasn't perfect. This defense terrifies me down the stretch. Hope they can hold it together for now.

At the half I was afraid the last dance might end up being a drunken polka, then BOOM, almost like magic the Packers were transformed into the team we hope they can be. The play of the game without a doubt was the 50 yard bomb to Adams down the right sideline on 3rd-and-12. It cascaded after that and we even got a gift turnover from Goff on a slippery ball.

Also of note, I think we witnessed the changing of the guard at cornerback. King will tease you with a nice break up here and there but then he'll play Keystone Cops on a critical play. In just one outing Stokes flashed more fluidity and agility than King ever displayed. I think this kid could be a nice compliment to Jaire.

Oh, and now we saw why the Packers resigned Jones in a position we already had strong back ups. In some ways he makes our offense tick as much as Rodgers. He's truly a vastly underrated and special back.

Finally, kudos to LaFleur for a nice game plan and getting the team ready to play.

Out for the evening and ended up speed watching recorded game at 1 am early this morning.

I think everyone's comments are valid and pretty spot on. I believe all year there is going to be extreme frustration amongst our fan base (me included) because of the ARod bullshit this year combined with all the national and local press talking up the Packers being a SB team. It is going to be impossible for this team to week in and week out to meet us fans expectations. As NFL personnel are fond of saying "our opponents are professionals and get paid too".

There are a lot of things to really like so far. I am really happy to see the young OL on the interior developing and getting experience. It is only going to help long-term. Stokes my goodness has unlimited potential. Hill continues to impress reminding me so much of Jones. Be nice to start seeing Amari more and likely will as season progresses. This is a team being built for long-term.

Yes, the defense is dissapointing up to this point but a 2nd half shut out is impressive. I agree I'd like to see Gary do more, but a significant reason is the Packers have virtually nothing on the interior DL for pass rush. Zero! Where is Keke and Clark? There is no doubt in my mind the Packers need to invest 'two high draft choices' next year on DL. Need a significant upgrade there.

This team will be a contender if they can avoid any significant injuries to guys like Rodgers, Jones, Adam's, Tonyan, Jenkins, Jaire, Clark, and so on along with steady improvement with their defense and interior OL.

Gawd, I got so tired of the broadcast crew talking about Jamaal Williams and how the Packers miss him, etc!

2nd Half. That's what I signed up for.

That said, I agree with EVERY SINGLE ONE of your points, Aaron. A new DC and new system, as much as many of us want to think it's unchanged, it has changed, and will take time and real reps to progress into what many of us were pining for on D. Good to see LaFleur dictate a heavy dose of running the ROCK! That always helps every phase of the passing game.

Phenomenal throws by Rodgers, placing the ball twice the way only he can do it (Davante 3rd & 12/Tonyan TD). Aaron Jones was equally spectacular.

DET suffering injury at CB weighed heavy though, and was a help to GB in the 2nd Half. Packers 1st ten games is loaded with challenges. Legit challenges. Hoping for the best. Stokes couldn't possibly defend the TD. Perfect throw and perfect pass, which no DB can defend. However, he made INSANE plays on the ball to show why we took him R1. Those were confidence builders, which he sorely needed. He's going to be special. Garvin hitting Goff forcing the INT by Campbell was on brand. Good to see the positive swing.

Rodgers still has his head up his ass. He had zero idea it was the two-minute warning before half. When the whistle blew he threw his hands in the air and looked to the bench as if he were about to chew MLF out for calling a time out or something. Then when he realized it was the two-minute he undoubtedly felt like an asshole so he just smiled.
