Gut Reactions: Never-say-die Packers steal one from the Saints

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers thrilling 18-17 win over the New Orleans Saints

  • The Cardiac Pack is back!
  • What an incredible job by Jordan Love and the Packers offense finding a way to get off the mat in the fourth quarter after the Saints defense, which is as good as advertised, had them on the ropes for much of the afternoon.
  • I can't believe this defense gave up a touchdown to Jimmy Graham in the year of our lord 2023.
  • I loved the call on the Wilson throwback to Love on 4th down. Just bad execution all around.
  • Also, someone tell the boys to wear the long cleats. Way too much slipping out there for the home team.
  • AJ Dillon ran harder today but he was still a liability at times. My guess would be that Matt finally just went to Taylor down the stretch out of frustration more than anything else.
  • Rashan Gary is making so much money every time he steps on the field.
  • Much better work along the interior of the defensive line against the run. The Saints got some stuff going outside, but for the most part they were stonewalling them inside.
  • The Packers must have the worst 2nd and long defense in the league. Seems every positive, get-them-behind-the-sticks play on first down, is followed by a let-them-get-a-bunch-of-it-back second down.
  • I think the Packers offense was just flagged again.
  • None of this drama is necessary if they don't give up a punt return for a touchdown.
  • I was incredibly impressed with the young wide receivers down the stretch. Almost every one of them had a tough afternoon through three quarters but they all answered the bell in the fourth quarter.
  • That Romeo Doubs catch down the right sideline? Mercy.
  • The fact that this team was down Aaron Jones, Christian Watson, David Bakhtiari, Elgton Jenkins, and Jaire Alexander, then lost Jaire's replacement in Carrington Valentine and De'Vondre Campbell along the way, and still found a way to win, is a testament to Matt LaFleur.
  • Crazy that this team plays again in four days.
  • Go Pack Go.

He won't respond, as he is not a Packers fan. What a win! I was with the only other GB fan in a New England bar wearing my cheesehead. We were both sad with the 17-0 deficit, but she said we would win. What a great 2nd half and HUGE effort from the team to pull it off. Packers were without several KEY starters and still managed a win. Let's beat the Lions on Thursday.

Stockholder is definitely a Packers fan.

His deal is he's one of these hard-core draftnik types who steadfastly and stubbornly believes that the end-all, be-all definitive bottom line on any given player is set in stone by the 10 or 12 "insider" draft guides he purchases and reads during the 12 weeks leading up to the draft.. nothing else matters, nothing else is true.

Did the Packers move up to take a player at #54 overall- but the draft guides say the player was still going to be around at #80? Major mistake, the player was a wasted pick, doesn't matter what he does on the field... over drafted.

That's typically the source of Stockholder's clamoring about and irritation. Love can't be any good, because he thinks he was over-drafted. His draft guides questioned his talent... and the draft guide is THE word.

He'll come around. He thought Rodgers was a bum until 2010, too. SH doesn't like change.

Not to mention we won because of a missed field goal. Hardly the moment for the coaches to dust off their hands and say “well looks like our work is done here.”

I spit out my drink when I heard one of the announcers say that it looked like we had found our qb for the next ten or fifteen years. We might have, but this performance hardly indicates it. Let’s see how the season goes.

"And don't forget Carr was out."

This was supposedly one of the better defenses in the league staked to a three-score lead until 11 minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

The Packers were playing without all their high-priced talent (except P. Smith and Savage)...does that figure into your equation?

Packers gambled they could sneak one out without any of their high-paid talent--hopefully so they could get them back healthy for the LOLions on Thursday--and they pulled it off.

After an inept 4th quarter and demoralizing loss to the Flaccons, they rally to beat a pretty good team at Lambeau. Feather in the cap of 10 as he bounced back from a really lousy 3 quarters to make this go. Just like the Saints picked on Ballentine, Love found Isaac Yiadom in coverage several times late to move the chains. That's a huge win for a young team.

Defense surrendered only 10 points and about 250 yards...although I think we were all holding our breath on that last FG attempt.

1-0 this week with a big matchup against the Lions on Thursday night.

In Edit: Vikings Kark one away in the final minute to fall to 0-3...the sky is just a little bit bluer.

Gary turned us around on one play. Without Carr, they couldn’t keep possession and win field position. Love took advantage of it despite some rookie drops and mistakes. That takes some toughness we should all acknowledge. A shout out to Taylor. He enabled us to get the chains moving.

"Love found Isaac Yiadom in coverage several times late to move the chains"

Yiadom spent time with the Packers in 2021 - so they had a fair idea of how to attack him.

On the subject of inside info - regarding last week's loss, don't forget that Jerry Gray was the DB coach at GB for a stretch, don't underestimate his intel there on how to expose the Packers secondary (i.e. Savage's open field tackling).

I too agree that the Packers prioritized the divisional game over this one (for players that were borderline).

Gutsy win... Love looked good down 17-0 (lot of young mistakes with HB/WR in the wrong place) except for the ball to Musgrave I bet he wants back... but a LOT more fun to take the W over the moral victory.

Was anybody else pretty certain our D was going to give up the winning FG??

AJ... Seems done in GB

Here's to hoping they held out Watson and Jones because we have DET on Thursday...

They showed AJ in pregame workouts and he didn't look at all bothered by his hammy so if the plan was to win today, while holding him out, then bring him back against Detroit then it worked.

Lots of good things and some bad, but a win is a win any day!

They needed this a lot and if we ever get 4/5ths of our injured back, Look out.

CW has the numbers, but how long did it take for AR to have a comeback win in his Rookie Season?

I for one am not concerned with Loves "accuracy" issues as some have mentioned, he will only get better with time and some experience with the receiving corps.

From 2007 through 2011, Rodgers went 3-for-19 (15.8 percent) when behind starting the 4th: 1-for-8 in 2008. I can’t remember his first come back from down more than 10 points, but I’d guess 2010.

To be fair, there was a lot of hoopla about Aaron Rodgers being a "Front-runner" who didn't have what it takes to lead a team to victory from behind- and never would- during his first two seasons as starter.

It was a an ignorant take, but a popular one, back then.

Rodgers legitimately did plenty to put his team in position to win during 4th Q's, but he had a legitimately poor defense that regularly imploded despite his point-scoring drives in many of those games.

The difference between Rodgers' 6-10 first year starting and the 2010 Superbowl win was a defense that sealed the deal far more than some drastic improvement in Rodgers' ability to lead the offense in the 4th Q.

You can’t blame Rodgers for getting ahead in games, but his fans also unfairly blamed a lot of his failings on the GB defense.

So far Love seems like a cooler, less ego invested player. Hopefully that will help him perform better in critical moments and on the big stage.

OK, let's do some math. 19 times in 80 games we were trailing going into the 4th. So in 61 of 80 games, we were either ahead or tied. But wait, it gets better. 8 of those games were in Rodgers first year, 2008, and in 2007 he played very little.

Let's put a finer point on it. We'll take away those two years, and go with 2009-2011. That means in 48 games, we were ahead or tied after 3 quarters 45 times. That's too impressive, IMO. It can't be right.

I had resigned myself to another self-destructive loss. Then the fourth quarter happened, and it was edge-of-the-seat, fingernail biting, amazing and incredible football. That the team never gave up is a testament to their guts and character. I am still gobsmacked by this team's comeback. It's been a long time, but so, so welcome. The roller coaster just went up. But up or down, I'm onboard for the ride.

The ride will be more fun with a win against Detroit! It would be nice if we knew #9 and 33 were good to go for it. I'm not sure how their D line is, especially with a matchup to our O line without Jenkins.

Ja, Valentine, Campbell ... even our latest addition at TE. Lots to track over just a few days. I just hope JL10 is ok after the adrenaline wears off, he can't keep getting hit like that.

A true tale of two halves.
DPI's were playing a huge role for Love.
The Saints got smoked by Winston.
Luckily, the Packers don't smoke Winstons.
The second half Love, especially 4th quarter Love makes me have faith that that's the QB he'll be.
As much as last week's loss hurt, this week's win erased it from my mind.

What did we just watch! Wow

Through three quarters they weren't just bad, they were falling asleep in my chair level bad. As a Packer fan, you always have that "OK, let's have one of those Rodgers gets carted off and comes back to beat the Bears style comebacks" but it was just feeling like a joke at this point. And then it happened!

The D really did the job and kept it close. 250 yards, 4 sacks and 10 points given up. And while playing practice squad guys on the outside. But Fire Barry will still be a thing anyway.

I love AJ Dillon. But I think we are going to be loving him on the sidelines or a healthy scratch pretty soon. If Taylor is the 2 minute, pass pro/outlet guy, then Dillon really has no role given how he's running.

Announcers are really the worst. LOL Vilma on the play where Reed goes into the Saints bench into the Gatorade jugs is going on and on about "the Packers just can't throw at that guy today he's playing too well...", when really it was an open pass and Reed just flat out dropped it.

At this point, if you just look at the stats you think Love is stinking it up with his 50 % completion rate, but if you watch the games he is not doing so bad at all. To me, some of Love's completion percentage woes is a lack of open targets and him having to force it in to tiny windows. He did miss the one wide-open long shot but overall his accuracy seemed decent. When his 39 yards is the leading rusher for the team, you know it's the O that has problems and he's doing ok.

That's only one example of the announcers being terrible.

I think #28 is still usable, but he needs to be used correctly. He's not a bell cow. And any RB should have blocking. At least he seemed to not be tripping over his shoelaces today. #31 Wilson was not given enough chances IMHO. Get him going and see what he can do.

#27 is suitable for depth.

I want to see JL10 NOT threading needles, or playing hero ball. High percentage plays to TEs and RBs. Still, a W is a W 🍻

Taylor proved his worth in the passing game last season. There is no sound strategy yo-yo ing him back and forth, to and fro on the P squad. Get him on the 53 and Utilize his talents. Give the ball to Love and let it rip. There is no complex illusion in a perfectly placed throw. It is his show now...

I thought Taylor was instrumental in getting the offense in rhythm in that drive, despite his error in stopping to prevent a jig in TD.

The run blocking was diabolical against a defense that has struggled mightily against the run though. Myers wax the worst again. He will have to go before we get better by the looks of things.

*Perseverance pays off. This is what happens when players don't quit.
*Love was cool and confident in the 4th quarter. He's looking real good.
*Our rookie receivers may struggle at times but they came up big in the 4th quarter.
*Barry's defense cost us 3 points at the end of the first half. Anyone see that 2nd & 9 with our corners about 10 yards away from the receivers? Hate seeing this again and again.
*Barry's defense almost cost us the game again if it weren't for the missed FG at the end. I hate having to win that way, but a win is a win.

Barry's defense held the Saints to 10 points.

I'm not a Barry fan, but I believe you judge each game on its own merit.

That defense stonewalled the Saints for the entire 2nd half of the game.

Some might say it was against the backup QB because Carr was out, but they would have short memories as that "backup" led the Saints to a 38-3 arse whipping of our very own Packers just over 2 years ago.

I had many doubts. As dissatisfied as I was last week—feeling great this week.
I’m really jazzed about our receivers. We need to be better at some contested catches, but this group is exciting.
Dillon should be changing tires—bench him.
The D has to be better in the long yardage plays.
Let’s spank the Lions.

About those contested catches, they have some GREAT DBs. Our receivers got initiated into NFL level getting the ball RIPPED out of your hands, perfectly executed PBUs, and even one via leg strip. That has to be a rare play?

As you know, I was not happy with the Jordan Love draft selection. It would be foolish however for me to criticize his performance. At the most critical stages in today’s game, he ran and passed for a TD. He’s proving me wrong—that’s a good thing.

I disagree on the contested catches. I think thats on Love. More times than not the ball ends up hitting the defender in the back. He has to get it higher so the receiver can elevate and make the catch.

I thought we were done midway through the third quarter. Wrong. I also hated the two-point conversion decision. Wrong again. As good as Lattimore is, he was caught napping a little bit on that play. Credit to Toure for stepping up and snatching the ball.

That off-season work between Love and Doubs was no joke. The timing, along with back shoulder catch, must have been well-rehearsed.

It's a good thing Savage made that tackle with a little over a minute left; a missed tackle might have allowed that FG try to sneak through the uprights.

Despite the numerous penalties on our part, the Saints were actually assessed more yardage.

Liked the Nixon play. See, MLF wasn't kidding when he said he had some stuff drawn up for him.

What a nice change of pace to have a young mobile QB--not only with the evasive TD scamper, but got out of a couple difficult situations to gain some yardage.

Between Atlanta and New Orleans, the rollercoaster is in full swing. Magical win versus the Saints.

The O-line couldn't hold their water or keep their hands to themselves during the first half, but got it straightened out in the second half. The defense played pretty well for the game despite being very thin at CB. Rashan Gary was a beast and the interior DL had a good game. And Jordan Love had a coming out party in the fourth quarter - WOW!

Really looking forward to Thursday night. GoPackGo!

That was nice. One for the ages. You'll be able to tell the youngsters about the time we fell behind 17-0 in our home opener and rallied. I know that Brett Favre never once rallied a team to a win once it was behind by 14. Love has done it in the 3rd game of his first season as a starter.

As bad as our 4th quarter against Atlanta was, this was as good or better.

Hit on a couple key things...
...Saints have a really good D, and they were staked to a 17-point lead that they couldn't hold.

Last week we lost one we should have one. Today we won one we should have lost, in even more dramatic fashion.

Love did not have a statistically great game (admittedly against an excellent defense) but his intangibles outweighed that. Our young QB has poise.

I wasn't thrilled with MLF's play calling. Many fans (including author Aaron) loved the failed early play call on 4th and 2, but I didn't. Run Dillon! Isn't that what he's here for? Even if it failed, it sends a message that we are committed to physical football. A gadget play says that we fear their defense.

I've been watching the Packers for over 60 years and this is one of the most unexpected and dramatic turnarounds ever!

Can't wait to see what this team is capable of once we get some of our injured players back.

After 4 quarters (going back to the Atlanta game) of scoreless football the offense finally found themselves and made a great comeback. Fortunately Grupe missed the FG at the end. Turned out to be a great win for the Packers.

All that being said the Packers need to clean up their penalties and their numerous mental mistakes. Maybe this game will be a turning point. We'll see.

In any case we play for the early season division lead on Thursday night. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

' Fortunately Grupe missed the FG at the end. Turned out to be a gratin for the Packers.'

That is correct Since'61, however, they had about a minute or so left with two time outs. The way they were playing with that 'winner attitude', I am thinking they drive down the field and kick the field goal to win.

What a HUGE win for the Packers. I had little hope being down 17-0. Defense stepped up and Love and young receivers found a way to get first downs and a win. Lions on Thursday will not be easy, but hopefully a few starters will be back. Then a few winnable games after the bye. Its looking up for this young team, but still too many penalties. Great comeback Pack!

We keep pointing to Carr, but Jameis Winston can sling it, too, as evidenced by the fact that he got them into position to kick that FG at the end.. The Saints went into a shell when Carr got hurt...the play-calling was almost McCarthy-esque.

There's a whole lot of "if Carr doesn't go down.." being slung around.

It's not like the defense didn't play well in the first half. The only TD they gave up was on a short field (Saints started at their own 44) after a failed 4th down conversion.

David Carr was 13-of-18 for 108 yards and a TD through an entire half and one full drive in the third Q... He wasn't lighting the world on fire.

Yep, the Saints were throwing a lot of short passes. They got some yards that way but were not able to sustain drives. Nice job by the defense not allowing many (or any?) long completions, even with practice squad player Corey Ballentine in there down the stretch. Both Saints QBs can throw deep and they have receivers who can get open deep, but it wasn't happening for them.

A Very Nice win despite being seriously out-coached and Joe Barry trying desperately to give it back to the Saints at the end.
Thanks for the missed field goal buddy, but if MLF would have kicked the three when the Pack had the opportunities it wouldn't have mattered, and the Pack wins by 10!
Happy with the win, happy with Love, happy with the young receivers, but beginning to question MFL's competence for the position. Too often he's out-coached and doesn't seem to learn from any of it. He might be even more stubborn than McPuffy was.

MLF's play calling was, IMO, atrocious today, but it has been very good to excellent in the first two games of the season.

I feel like MLF listened to the fans lamenting his playcalling as "not aggressive enough" after last week's loss to Atlanta. MLF's "aggressive" play calling almost lost the game for us today, also IMO.

Let's see what the Detroit game looks like and see how MLF responds to this week.

I think in part what changed things was the O line suddenly managing to pass protect longer and LaFleur being forced to just let Love loose. Love looked much more comfortable given that latitude. As a result we were more aggressive and effective but less contrived.

Here we are with the Barry stuff again. The defense allowed 10 points. It would've been 13 if the Saints had made that field goal. Corey freaking Ballentine was starting at CB on that final drive. And a 46-yard field goal is far from a gimme in an outdoor stadium. The defense played very well today.

Meanwhile, Rich Bisaccia's special teams had a pretty brutal day, but he's a tough-guy coach who everybody loves, so the special teams performance hasn't even been mentioned so far in this thread.

You nailed it on the head, GregC.

When you look at this game in a vacuum, the Defense was a major contributor to a win, the special teams were a negative, as was play calling.

It was more than just Rashan Gary out there making it happen.

A win is a win. But I am not going to give out too many medals - Not to Lafleur - game planning seems to be lacking - and Not Barry - the defense while it played well has a lot of holes and what about ALL phases especially ST with the return and the dumb penalties. And we needed an injury to their QB to pull it off. Love played well - but in my opinion many of his throws both in the first half and the second were just off. Not receivers need to catch the ball but if these throws were a bit farther ahead or a bit higher ie 12 - 18 inches then the receiver could reach out. Watch the game again and see if I am correct or not. Also Barry has a real problem with the outside linebackers - both this game and the Atlanta game the backs on swing routes and tight ends - are so wide open that they get easy 10 yards and I guess that the focus to clog the middle comes with the lack of linebackers having their eyes on those guys. Especially if we have a few missed tackles. But in any case T1 is still a T1 - and a lot of room to grow. And a final note - I am not going to totally trash Dillon - he has not been hitting the hole but the Oline has not been opening up anything for him and they did get him crashing up. But it is hard to get going when you are getting tackled within a second of getting the handoff.

Come on - the game turned when Carr went down - Winston went 3 and out consecutive times and couldnt get the ball to Olave - and it took a missed field goal to win. Not joking. The Packers embraced adversity as an opportunity for growth, and now learned how to come back from 17-0 in Q4 to WIN!

Huge. Stunning.

Biggest takeaway, Jordan Love and his teammates needed to know they could do this. First 3 Quarters wasn’t pretty, but that Q4… chef’s kiss.

This young team will face many trials & errors this season, building confidence along the way.

The last few years, to me he appeared a bit 'too nice' to be ballsy and I was not sure that he was what we needed. My thought was and is to a certain degree that the qb has to be a bit cocky to be really good. However, after watching Love today, I am really excited for him to be our qb for the future!

What I find very encouraging about Jordan Love's leadership style that we haven't had in a long time:

When a team mate messes up, while Love clearly shows signs of frustration, he doesn't take it out on the player in question.. and he has zero problems going right back to the same player on the next drive or next play.

In the recent past, we'd see young players getting iced out for GAMES... that's GAMES with an "S".. if they dropped the ball.

This team is going to see accelerated growth from the youth that we haven't seen in a long time.

One thing I do pick up strongly. This team likes as well as respects Love. That’s quite an endorsement.

We all knew going into this season there was going to be the good, the bad, and the ugly. Looks like we had all three in just one game and the good showerd up in the nick of time. Go Pack!

Can't hurry Love !
I think this was one of the artcles here on chtv and since season started I often sing my self chorus of that old pop song:

You Can't hurry love,
No you just have to wait

I think these 2 lines appropriatly describe qb1 performance today . I this were Rodgers years where every win was important for ni 1 seed Ibwould be more down at halftime but today noy I said to myself result is not that important, let youngsters show how resilient they are. And boy were they. Kudos to defence, without their 0 in 2nd half this woul be loss. Gpg from Slovenija

StockHolder will be around.
He doesn't go hide his head in the sand.

Now, EDP on the other hand?
Won't see him around until the Packers lose again.

Everyone, this is one of the leagues youngest teams missing 2 offensive stars and 2 great young players. They're 2-1 and are in 1st place. Plenty of mistakes in the 1st 3 games, but these youngsters aren't just going through the motions. They play hard hustle which is really nice to see. THE ARROW IS POINTING UP. GOPACKGO.

Love wasn't accurate with the long ball in college and he certainly isn't now...but keep those INT penalties coming!! Those were a huge part of the comeback!!...That and Carr going out...never say die...better cut down on the flags again the Lions..

JL10 has thrown some dimes on long balls. The misses might be on the receiver moreso than him. Where he misses is short easy throws. That's the part of the O game that needs to improve the most I think; that and throwing to TEs and RBs more. Less hero ball.

Does no one still remember Rodgers issues on
long balls? All QBs have them. Here it’s a mix. Some are on him, some on the catchers and some on both, but those aren’t high percentage throws for anyone.

Yes for now he has issues with really long balls, like 40 yards plus especially down the middle. But a bit shorter long balls like down the sideline in about 30 yards range, he throws much better and completed 2 agains the Saints. There would be aother story if all his passse would be off target but he can be also very accurate, and I thin with time also on long balls he can improve

Great team win. The defense stepped up. Gary was a sack machine....Good to see Reed and Doubs laying out for acrobatic catches. Love moved fluidly within the pocket when he had to.....I swear he has holes cut out in the back to sense pressure. Another positive is these young guys are doing it with several starters out and the guys injured are getting to see it first hand also. We have a big game Thursday...I hope we get some starters back on the field for it...GPG

Great win! I don't want to just bash on Dillion, but our running game is just not good without Jones. Our o-line is bad at run blocking. That being said, great comeback win. Hats off to Love in the 4th quarter and the Defense played good too.

This one will live long in the memory. What an ugly first three quarters. Almost unwatchable. But the measure of a man is not when he's riding high and things are going well...you really find out what you're made of when things are not going well.

Will we look back on this game as the start of a great run by Jordan Love?

I couldn't help but think back to Brett Favre's first comeback: 1992, also in week 3. Let's hope for a similar outcome.

p.s. Please stop underestimating the Lions. They swept us last season. Bring on Detroit!!

Good win for the Pack. JLove and the offense looked better late this game than the ATL game which is a good sign for his growth. I'm gonna enjoy the win and the positives that came out of it but at the same time stay even keeled about what it means for the season going forward. A lot of key players being out on both teams makes it hard to extrapolate anything meaningful about the season going forward.
