Gut Reactions: Packers 31 Dolphins 12

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers win over the Dolphins.

  • Nice to see the Packers actually "get right" in what was supposed to be a "get right" game
  • Hell of a break on the ball by Breeland
  • He's still too grabby though.
  • That fake punt call by the Packers in response to the Dolphins fake punt call was money
  • JK Scott sold the hell out of that fake
  • Great job on the punt inside the 10 too.
  • Equanimeous Tristan Imhotep J. St. Brown knocked that dude the hell out.
  • Of course, the NFL hates football, so it's a penalty.
  • Nice to see McCarthy KIND OF committ to Aaron Jones
  • First two TD game of Jones' career. Hope to see many more.
  • Kyler Fackrell is playing better than Nick Perry.
  • Rodgers still isn't right.
  • That said, that TD throw to Adams was vintage Rodgers.
  • I don't know why he's so timid earlier in games, but it's giving me an ulcer.
  • Why does the defense always start out so passive? It shouldn't take a botched snap to save you.
  • I can't tell you how much I loved watching Marcedes Lewis rumbled down the field. You just know they were in meetings this week and were saying "They'll never expect us to throw it to you, so when we do, just eat big guy"
  • How about Raven Greene and Tony Brown? Young, unhearalded dudes stepping up in the secondary.
  • On the other end of the specturm, tough day for Josh Jackson.
  • Hope Jaire isn't hurt too bad.
  • Props to Byron Bell for gutting it out.
  • Why is Rodgers in there throwing the ball with the game all but decided? Took a dumb, unecessary hit. And to be clear, that's not on Rodgers.
  • I need more beer.
  • I don't care about anything when it comes to the future of this football team for the rest of the night. I'm just going to marinate in this win.
  • Go Pack Go.

Man, felt really nice to finish a game and not feel like absolute garbage - hope this is the start of something big moving forward.

With that being said, I’m with Aaron and not going to think of the future, but going to enjoy a decent win tonight. Cheers!

It’s great to have a QB better than Osweiler!

Our STs coach did not earn his $1,750,000 again? The announcers said what a great ST coach Miami has......twice.

I still believe we have excellent players because of Thompson and Gute. Our coaches, however, are below average for offense and STs. Even with the occasional stupid mistake, our defense is at least average, maybe a little above. Yes, I believe stupid mistakes are mainly the coaches fault.

Selfish? yes stupid ? No Monty went to Stanford not GB Community College. Bostick made a mistake in playoff game not sure stupid is reason. Not to say GB has brightess players in the league as some of these plays make you wonder. not sure coaching is highest on the totem pole either. Blind leading the somewhat blind.

When you're told by your coach "do not catch the ball, let Jordy catch it. Block for Jordy" and then you jump in the air hands raised to bounce the onside kick off of your helmet, you don't call stupid? You call it "a mistake"?

As for Ty, I know many professionals, lawyers, doctors, accountants that have attended excellent and top schools but many still need to drop their pants to count to 21. As for coaching, we're on the same page starting with MM.

I have been befuddled that a Head Coach who landed in Green Bay preaching about the running game could go so long with no commitment to it. At least until Thursday we have a coach who will run the football. Hope that lasts more than 4 days.

Very happy to get a W. Does anyone really think MM responds to this win with another 15 carry game for Jones? Or does he outsmart himself and try to give Williams carries again?

5 minutes or so left in the 2nd quarter and who do I see on the field for a series? WILLIAMS... The offense looked as though it was running in mud and Williams seems to be back to doing what he did his first few games as a pro...Run up the rear end of his O-Line. Credit McCarthy for going right back to Jones.

My one BIG problem was on 3rd and 4 or 3rd and 2 the Packers are still running routes 20 yards downfield...WHY Mike WHY?

Nick: Exactly right. All receivers long, no check downs. Running Jones 15 times is still too few. He was hot, and MM sat him in 2nd quarter. Rodgers is not right or seeing the field well. Our pass routes are long or down and out still with no picks, runs, slants, etc. Predictable still on routes and receivers not getting much separation. Rodgers is still not fluid with the offense, seems like we are all holding our breath now with confidence in flow lacking in communication and boring routes. We will need a large dose of the run game and using our backs and TE's much more at Seattle. If It's all Rodgers we will get beat down. Key will also be our pass rush and containing the run from Wil-skin. Screw the 12th man with long, sustained drives and touchdowns. Get up by 17 and then cut the hawks junglar for bleed out. Go Pack. This game or our season is finished I feel.

Dobber: Ya think MM will watch film and use him much more? MM sat him most of 2nd quarter for what? He was hot and broke a sweat and MM sits him? Ridiculous. Great backs like to lather and keep it rolling. MM still doesn't get it. We will see against Seatlle. Bet if Jones gets stopped a few times MM will abandon the run. We'll all be watching!

This is what is supposed to happen when you face Brock Osweiler at home a nice thumping of an average opponent no nail biter come from behind victories they still managed to look pedestrian for parts of the game but with a win like this it’s something that can be worked on. Hopefully they can keep their winning streak against the Hawks going next week and grab their first road win then ease into the mini bye let’s make it 4 straight against the Hawks!

I'm pretty impressed with Tony Brown, he always seems to make tackles in the backfield or short of the sticks and is not afraid to come up and thump someone. Raven Greene looks pretty doggone good as well. And Breeland is already playing better after just one start. Getting Brown, Breeland and Greene on the field could end up being a blessing in disguise.

Except for AJ, this was a boring game to watch. Should have been 51 - 6 against a very bad beaten up team. Defense took a step back today compared to the last couple weeks. Maybe Pettine was saving something for Thurs. Offense was ok but against this team, not overly impressive. When AR is scrambling, why aren't guys running back towards him and why isn't he trying to help them make a play. Once again a couple dump offs were thrown low (though caught).

Seattle almost beats LAR. Looks like we are headed to an improving team on Thurs.

Defense did pretty well. Multiple injuries, at least two possessions that started on the wrong side of the 50, multiple special teams errors. Allowing 12 points while generating two turnovers and six sacks isn't bad at all.

Isn't it nice that an effort like this can be scrutinized, so nice having Pettine instead of Capers. This would have been a 'blame the injuries loss' in years past

Good solid win. We can still beat bad teams at home. Now can we take this show on the road against a good team?

I wonder what our record would be if we had been using Aaron Jones effectively since he returned in week 3?

Our defense played big against 3 turnovers, one by Tramon on a punt return, one on a blocked punt and another on downs. Each time the defense stopped the Fish on a short field and held them to an FG. Good job!

It was the Dolphins with a backup Qb but I'll take this win every week for the rest of the season and through the playoffs. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Miami played second stringers at LT, RT, OC, and a third-stringer at LG. Miami was effective running the ball in the first half and we didn't generate much pressure in the first half. Once GB got up by three scores our pass rush materialized.

Tony Brown minus penalties looks like a player. Josh Jones looked solid and his sideline to sideline pops out. Martinez got caught in the wash on the long Gore run. Clayborn and Quinn can still play. We took more easy yards, though AR has trouble with short passes: his placement seems to break the receiver's (especially the RB's) momentum too often. MVS is making tough catches. Not so sure about the penalty on ESB on the defenseless McCain. Looked a lot like the hit on CM3 a season or two ago. Marcedes! Loved watching him truck and then get two hands on the ball before contact.

Tells us everything when fans are screaming for the ball to be in the hands of our running back as opposed to our $30 million QB. It's like yelling that Scottie Pippen needs more shot attempts, but his teammate is Michael Jordan.
Rodgers head is somewhere else. Poor mechanics, lazy footwork. Lack of discipline overall. And fancy him jumping on the back of Jones for the false start. He lost it at a rookie receiver earlier in the year too, for running the wrong route. Maybe some of his teammates need to start barking back at him when he doesn't throw them the ball when they are wide open. Or maybe they should protest by not running any routes at all and Rodgers can play his "sandlot" ball all by himself.
Every other QB in the league is making the position look easy (including a rookie QB in Cleveland who has lost his head coach and OC) and Rodgers is making things as difficult as possible by not sticking to the designed play.
Damn this is frustrating to watch.

I feel Rodgers is mighty culpable in many instances, but the one thing I would never condone is any sort of "barking back" or mutiny from the team. That's simply counter productive. Frankly, I think Rodgers may engage in some of that type behavior on occasion with McCarthy, and it's unacceptable.

I assume there's back and forth during the work week for these guys behind closed doors, where it should be.

It does make sense because it illustrates how mediocre Rodgers looks this season comparable to his standards. I think he still has the tools to be the best QB in the league, but his head is elsewhere. Whether his cranky with McCarthy, or it's something else, there's no question he looks disinterested at times, and it's reflective in his play (not setting his feet, leaving the pocket when he doesn't have to, trusting his reads and letting it rip)
Everyone knows how capable he is, because we've all witnessed it, but at the moment he looks nothing like the player he once was.
And I think his poor display so far is amplified by the fact that Brees, Mahomes, Rivers etc. are playing the position at such a high level.

Correct. To clarify, I'm not ripping Jones or Packer fans. Just pointing out how little confidence people have in Rodgers at the moment when we are calling for Jones to get the ball more often.
In previous years, if it were 3&2 and the Packers needed a critical conversion, everyone would've wanted the ball in the hands of the best player (Rodgers) and it would be expected he'd make a play. Now theres a better chance he takes a drive killing sack, or throws it to someone sitting on the sidelines. People would now rather Jones get the ball on 3&2 instead of Rodgers. That tells us a lot about a 2 x MVP, SB MVP and holder of numerous records. That's all I was saying.

Aaron,
How is it you figure to be sure the passing at the end of the game was "not on Rodgers"? I am curious.

One of the things we know about MM's history with running the ball, his teams have typically protected the late leads by closing out a game via running the ball down the opponent's throat.

Nice to get a win. Once again the defense seemed to be on its heels early then righted itself with solid adjustments. Maybe change is a good thing. As to the offense, I felt like MM dug out the old play sheet after the first scores and regressed to the tired predictable one without Kendricks blocking. Once someone switched out his play sheet the offense got back on track with multiple tight end sets and receivers leading through the hole.

Rodgers doesn't seem to be throwing the ball with anywhere near the precision or velocity he did before he broke his collarbone. I think that may be a factor. Also don't know why MM/Rodgers constantly refuse to call the short throw to move the chains, opting for long developing plays that result in sacks and lost points.

Aaron Jones had 98 yards and a TD in the first quarter. 2nd quarter from what I saw (I didnt get a chance to sit and give my undivided attention unfortunately) he mysteriously vanished into thin air?

Let me tell you something, Aaron Jones would have easily gone for over 200 today while probably adding another TD. You know why he didnt? Mccarthy was not about to let that happen and take the criticism and look stupid that this kid has a performance like that proving all the armchair QBs and analysts who questioned Mccarthys use of Jones this season. His ego and his fat ass need to GO. You cannot tell me Jones disappearing in the 2nd quarter after a 98 YARD quarter was anything besides Mccarthy feeling the bruise on his precious ego growing and not having any good reason to give when every question he gets asked is about our STAR RB.

He has been handicapping this team for too damn long, but today it was ON PURPOSE. Sickening. Look at the weapons of this offense. Imagine what someone like a Jim Harbaugh, a ball of energy(just an example!) would do with this unit. I cannot stand the sight of him anymore. He couldnt let Jones continue to make a fat jackass out of him.

Jones got 3 carries in the two series we had in the second quarter. Williams played the first series, which had 10 plays. Jones got 3 carries in the second series of the 2nd quarter despite GB getting the ball with 2:09 left and starting out at our own 10 yards line. Jones got 3 carries in 8 plays.

You can criticize MM for doing the substitution by whole series instead of just giving Jones 4 plays off and then bringing him back in, but intent is harder to show. MM is just stubborn. He did the same thing with Lacy and Starks, resulting in Starks running up the middle from the 2-yard line instead of Kuhn or Lacy.

Maybe, just maybe, the short week and travel to Seattle in three days has something to do with trying to keep Jones fresh?

That's ridiculous. MM is handicapping Jones on purpose to avoid being proven wrong. And the Clintons run a child prostitution ring out of the basement of the Pizza Hut.

Good win let’s start with that. Got some big chunks in the run game. Frustrating part Jones had only 8 carries in the first half. I think if they can’t stop it keep doing it. The 4th and 2 was MM bone headed call, didn’t like it or get his thinking on play selection. 12 had no audible on it no sight adjustment you have to give Rodgers a check to get to a better pass or run play. I like the physical play and a lot of bump and run and rerouting of receivers. Pettines defense has gotten better every week and adding new wrinkles and players is what makes a good coach. If he stays long term and given some upper echelon talent watch out they will have a dominant defense. 12 is not right and it is noticeable, and the pass game is outdated and plays into coverages .

Dolphins playing their backup QB with three OLine starters out. Their office has not had a TD in their last 60 drives I think the announcer said. Super game by Jones going off for 145 yards!! Rodgers takes two sacks on 4th down plays needing only two yards...what’s up with that?! Can’t even quick throw to a running back for three yards?! Nice to get a win but against an undermanned Dolphins team. We shall see see how they do against Seattle on Thursday. Gotta win on the road or the season is going nowhere.

Good point about the short yardage sacks. Does anybody else think the O-line just isn't very good outside of LT? (and he had a bad game tonight)

i was happy to see the screen pass being used in this game. its been long overdue and was very effective. why MM had it in layaway for so long is a mystery to me.

It was a win and a win at home that is still a good solid base you want. I will give kudos to the Packers.

Packers have to win out for the rest of the season and see where the chips fall

Tough game on Thursday. They need to be getting ready tonight.

There is NO time to wait.

I would argue that they can drop one game yet because their tie will allow a 10-5-1 team to beat any 10-6 team in the playoff standings. It doesn't look like there are going to be a lot of 11+ win teams this year. Still, they already have 3 conference losses, which isn't helpful.

Divisional Game records/Schedule (the first tie breaker).

4-4-1 GB: 1-1-1. @ MN, @ Chi, Det.
5-3-1 MN: 1-0-1. @Chi, GB, @ Det, Chi
6-3-0 CHI: 1-1. MN, @ Det, GB, @ MN

GB: @Sea, @ MN, Ari, Atl, @Chi, @NYJ, Det
MN: @ Chi, GB, @NE, @ Sea, Miami, @ Det, Chi
CHI: MN, @ Det, @ NYG, LAR, GB, @ SF, @MN

It isn't hard to see 4 Chicago losses to MN x 2, LAR and GB. Makes them 9-7.

It isn't implausible to see 3 MN losses: GB, NE, Sea. I've envisioned MN beating Chicago twice, so they'd have to lose to Detroit to avoid going to the next tiebreaker, conference record. Many other permutations.

9-6-1 could be enough for GB to win the North.

Thanks for the succinct break down, TGR.

I don't know why so many Packers fans are convinced it's wildcard or bust for the Packers. The division is far from settled at this point.

It feels like a LONG time since we've won.

This was Josh Jackson's worst game thus far.

Defense with six, yes SIX sacks. Fackrell and Montravius Adams each had one!

Clay Matthews with ZERO tackles, ugh.

Nick "Houdini" Perry put on another "magic show."

We still had 6 penalties for 45 yards. We average 7 per game, so not much change there.

Nice to see us finally pull a trick play.

Only one turnover.

We really need Trevor Davis back returning kicks (thought I'd never say that).

Rodgers just isn't Aaron Rodgers right now. Not good on a short week heading up to Seattle.

MVS needs more targets.

Josh Jackson definitely had a rough go at it today, however most of them seemed to be aggressive mistakes - and with more experience it will turn into aggressive playmaking as soon as the game slows down for him a little more. The ball to Amendola he JUST missed making a play on reminded me of Nick Collins in his first couple of seasons. Nick would sellout the same way and more often than not pay the price for it early on. Then once he tightened up, kept stacking success and confidence, those near misses instead became circus interceptions. And touchdowns. Its been awhile since ive been this encouraged just by a kid having a rough game. Hes gonna make it rough for the opposing team very soon

He better get better at anticipation, he wont be making up with speed.

"Jackson does not have Nick Collins type speed."

Actually, he does.

Nick Collins 40 yd dash - 4.49 (10 yard split - 1.64; 20 yard split - 2.65)
Josh Jackson 40 yd dash - 4.48 (10 yard split - 1.57; 20 yard split - 2.61)

Damn youre right, I have to remember to eliminate that term from my vocabulary because I really do hate Mccarthy that much. In my defense my college coach and Syracuse legend Dan Conley was who I associate the phrase with but you just reminded me I need to 86 it because of MM lol

The defense pitched another shutout giving up no touchdowns. They seems to be getting better with each game. I'll take an improved defense with a diminished Rodgers, which I doubt he is, than a better Rodgers and a defense like we've had previous to this one. It didn't matter how great the offense or Rodgers was the D could never close the deal. This year feels different, they are actually making stops and might be what makes it happen for us. It's been the missing ingredient all these years... a Mean Green D. An emerging Aaron Jones with an emerging defense and the return of Cobb and Allison may start this train rollin'. Go Pack Go!

The Seahawks game was televised in my area. They looked very good on offense, Wilson rushed for 92 yards and 5 first downs. They scored 4 TD’s on long drives, 90 yards and three 75 yard drives. Seattle should put up a lot of points, it will be up to GB’s offense to play their best for ALL 4 quarters to win this game.

So EQ intercedes before a guy can tackle the ball carrier, he gives him a forearm to the chest, knocks him on his little cornerback ass. How can that possibly be a penalty? It used to be said that if you knock 'em on their ass, it can't be an illegal block. I am appreciating EQ's blocking. The guy is not afraid to get his uniform dirty and CBs gotta fear the 6'5" boomer.

Can't purposely come BACK toward your own line of scrimmage and make a block line that. It's plays like that which end careers. That rule is in place because of the fairly large sample size of instances where guys were getting "knocked the hell out" on a consistent basis.

Different circumstances, but "cheering" this play is akin to "cheering" Trevathan's hit on tae Adams OR Sapp's famous "block" on Clifton.
