Gut Reactions: The Bears Still Suck

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers beatdown of the Bears.

  • The Bears Still Suck
  • Loved some of the early counter action in the run game
  • Good game from Savage prior to the injury, Hope he's good because he's playing his best ball.
  • Elgton Jenkins is a star.
  • Great to see Rashan Gary get the start and keep bringing it. Guy is a force.
  • Really nice job by Preston Smith on the RPOs. Great job staying home.
  • Davante Adams' TD catch was insane.
  • That Tonyan TD was absurd, He made three moves on his way to the end zone.
  • What in the hell was up Kyle Fuller's ass tonight?
  • Aaron Rodgers was in this game way, way too long.
  • That Jamaal Williams TD was for Big B.
  • I get that they were garbage time TDs...but god this team loves giving up garbage time TDs.
  • Love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

In '92 the Bears lead the series by 24 games. If you told me GB would be the first to 100 wins between the two teams, I would have thought you were crazy.

I probably won't be around for the Packers 200th win against them, so I'll take this as the utmost milestone.

I remember looking at the all-time series record sometime around the "Upon further review, the Bears Still Suck" game with Majkowski. And thinking the Packers were destined to trail in for the duration of my lifetime.

Little did I know the Packers were about to embark on the longest sustained HoF QB play in NFL history with Favre followed by Rodgers.

I don't know what's worse Da Boars abysmal offense or the Packers equally abysmal defense. Not going anywhere with this swiss cheese defense that can't make a stop and/or play a complete game without looking like the Keystone Kops when arm tackling.

Enjoy the win but damn this defense is horrible.

It's a real concern. They've played well for stretches. They'll never be dominant. But if they play consistently gap sound, it will be good enough to win.

I get the criticism and I'd normally agree wholeheartedly, but they did force 3 turnovers, all of which were converted into TDs. Not all opposing offenses will be helmed by QBs of Trubisky's poor calibre, but if they can win the turnover battle and just do enough situationally to force some key stops, that really should be enough.

Add that work by Amos and King to prise the ball out of the TE’s hands on that end-zone catch in the first - that’s as close to scoring without getting the nod that one can get.

4 game changing plays that buried the bears.

....... said it in another post today - the packers win if they make Trubisky have to throw to keep momentum. He’s not consistently accurate enough on deep balls to not throw interceptions.

Missed tackles are the norm with this defense
Pettine must go as tackling can be taught . Usually starts in jr high. Maybe Pettine does not know how to teach tackling

They dont tackle in practice. And no you dont teach tackling to pro athletes. There is basic rules to tackling but that is it. The rest is a combination of skill, will, and discipline.

"And no you dont teach tackling to pro athletes. There is basic rules to tackling but that is it. The rest is a combination of skill, will, and discipline"

Why don't you teach tackling to a pro athlete? Can't they learn basic rules? Are coaches not there to instill skill and discipline in their players? Are they incapable in inspiring players to greater will power?

When it's a 2 possession game with about 4 minutes left, you don't bring in your backup QB. Once you're around two minutes left, THEN you do it - and that's what LaFleur did.

Why do so many people here hate Taysom Hill? It's kind of petty and ridiculous, and it sounds like sour grapes more than anything. Give him credit for succeeding somewhere else; and it's not like he plays for a division rival or anything.

I will say this (nothing to do with Hill), I can’t take any game seriously when the opponent has to start a PS WR at QB. Just a farce.

As I'm sure you're aware, he has succeeded when called upon for many roles. He may be a jack of all trades and master of nothing, but still, the dislike is unwarranted and seems to be rooted in petty jealousy (that the Packers didn't realize his potential to contribute and let him go).

Nobody hates Hill. What some of us dislike are the people who think Hill is the be all and end all of quarterbacking. We also dislike the people who have constantly used Hill as an alleged example of poor performance by Green Bay's front office, although until the past two weeks Hill had accomplished next to nothing.

Don't confuse disgust for the Hill lovers with hatred of Hill.

Glad to see that you agree with me that no one here actually hates Hill.

Until his start two games ago Hill had thrown a total of 14 passes in his career, if i recall the total correctly. There are lots of players who could have performed the functions that Hill has for the Saints. There are lots of excellent special teams players.

Hill has carved out a good career for himself. He is a multi-faceted player. He has performed decently in his two QB starts. I'm glad for him. However, he's not the greatest thing since sliced bread as some have portrayed him.

Packers played a 2DT 3OLB package for most of this game. Gray ability to set the edge and squeeze the pocket forced early throws and left Matt T with little space to work with. Freeing up the Smith Bros to do what they do best. Gray played a physical smart game. He was good tonight.

Now actually watch his pass rush. Stats can be misleading. He collapsed the pocket on the p smith td. Got a ton of pressure. Stats can be misleading. He also drew a hold which led to a punt on a beast of a bull rush. Just watch him. Hes becoming a real player. Pressure is more inportant than sacks if you do it consistently.

You're missing what a lot of people end up missing when they try to appraise a player's performance by glancing over the stat sheet:

You're missing the actual play of the player on the field.

There is so much that happens on the field of play that shows good to great performance that doesn't necessarily end up producing a recorded statistic.

It's why you have to watch the player in conjunction with the stats to get a full picture of the level of play.

Easier than taking candy from a baby with no Hicks and Tribs (wow, is he BAD) as the starting QB. What a lame effort from them coming off of a bye week. It wouldn't be totally unreasonable for them to follow suit with the Lions, although I think they'll probably wait until season's end to make changes.

Happy for the win, but keep in mind it came against an impotent offense and toothless defense without Hicks. We don't face a quality opponent, at least on paper, for another month against the Titans.

Glad to see St Brown play well. Hated that first possession in the 2nd half - again. But Tonyan made up for that stupid holding penalty with that nice TD catch. Loved the early tight coverage and pass knock downs. And then back to garbage time playing off. Will Kirksey ever learn to defend a pass in the endzone without drawing a PI. Let the man catch it and knock it out, you played him with perfect position. PI's in the endzone is almost an automatic TD -especially with our D line. I guess MVS was not really ready to go but others chipped in and the game plan was solid.

Thought the same thing about the PI. The Pack had two good defensive plays just prior to that and then the stupid end-zone PI basically gives da Bears a cheap TD.

Try to play the ball by either knocking it down or swipe his arms after he tries to pull it in. Obvious PI's near or in the end-zone almost always cost you points.

The Bears were doubling MVS early on in their scheme. D. Adams at times had man with another in trail and one over the top. Someone is going to be open with that type of coverage, they were and Rodgers found them tonight. MVS is a beast in the run game, he has earned the 2 WR with his play.

Really happy that ESB had some productive snaps.

I still believe he has more upside than MVS and could become a real weapon.

That said, he read that WR screen (bubble screen) horribly. He got his first down, so that's good, but he left a LOT of yards on the field on that play, looking for the sideline instead of leveraging the blockers and taking the seam between them.

Agree 100%. He was really coming on in his limited snaps towards the end of his rookie career, was making some really nice big-yardage plays.

The year off the field definitely set him back, and his limited play early this season was disappointing, but he looks like he's starting to put it together again.

He's highly intelligent, and has really rare height-weight-speed-strength combination. He seems like a good football player. I'm definitely pulling for him to continue growing. I think he could be a pivotal player for the Packers.

I will be pleasantly surprised if green bays starting center isn't out for the year.

The defense wasn't too bad, but it would be nice if they didn't go into a shell and make the games look a lot closer than it was. The only real run play that killed me was the long one by montgomery to start the game right between kenny clark and Z smith. There was nobody there in the second level before they even snapped the ball. Bad Pettine.

Then montgomery catching little dump offs and making the first and second guys miss for a first down. There were a couple easy first downs from the defense giving up way too much cushion again. But otherwise, not too bad. Greene, king, and sullivan were the culprits on those.

I'm glad that savage is starting to finally flash pro bowl level talent in both pass defense and getting turnovers. Hopefully he does it consistently.

Big deal! The QB threw into double coverage, as Savage did his job and was there for the easy catch. That's why we drafted him in the first round. Ed Reed made plenty of these types of plays throughout his career. Too bad you've been a prisoner of low expectations (the HHCD, among others, comparison) for so long....

I don't think it was routine. It's routine for the best safety in the league. Comparing him to a hall of famer renown for his pass defense as if that is routine isn't very good to support the argument. The old saying is "if they could catch the ball, they would be on offense." He showed off a lot of nice traits going and getting that ball.

Savage was playing one high with Amos sliding into the box. Matt T was keying off Savage when Savage drifted slightly away on the throw. But Savage suckered him by setting his angle to overtake while Sullivan had the under. That was a veteran play by two young DB all around. It just looks easy to us watching on TV. That's a bang bang play in 5 seconds. I saw a lot of Reed too. Ravens just set him back in center field and dare teams to throw. One of those rare players who a coach could put in the box and cover sideline to sideline. Made everything look easy.

Most professional starting safeties in the NFL, even those drafted in the first round, get their interceptions from over the top of the route, when squared up to the LOS facing the QB.

Savage chased down the route from behind, got in position and located the ball over his shoulder with his back to the LOS like a WR, and plucked the ball from the air in front of him.

I have been particularly tough on Savage's play not being what we expected it to be- and I still believe at this time I'd rather have Raven Greene play next to Amos than Savage- but that pick was not a typical NFL starting safety play.. That was exceptional. Can't take that from Darnell, great play.

Yesterday, he looked like a glimpse of what the Packers thought they were getting when they drafted him.

The Packers defense still couldnt shut down Trubisky he was moving the ball easily , Mike Pettine just can't shut anyone down and make a statement, next week the Packers defense will reignite Carson Wentz 's career .

Seriously, spare us. Pettine dared the Bears to run on his 2-5 sub, 3-5 base. For the most part the Bears failed. Trubisky could not move the team till the middle of the fourth when Pettine went to a cover 2 with quarters to force the Bears to eat clock. It worked. This was a beat down by both units and the Bears knew it. Give it a rest...

I just dont know why you don not just watch any football games. You should have a lot of time.

You mean that D that made look Trubinsky like Cuttler, created turnover after turnover and even scored?
Got you. I see you recognize a good D if you see one. So just start to watch a game or two, you will like it.

You must have missed the turnovers- both fumbles and picks- that the GB defense created yesterday.

Look, I get it- the defense isn't where people want it to be. But Packers fans are always so eager to shit on the defense that they intentionally ignore any positives on display.

Again its like the pack have no game plan, just winging it. and we are 8-3 but having to watch the Vikes each week, they have a regulated scheme, each week same thing, everyone on same page knowing what to do.
They ran the less than two minute drill with absolute precision like they have 1o minutes to go. Everyone knew their role, their job and performed it, Just dont see that at all on this team and I think it will bite them in the you know what down the road.
Do we run? Do we pass? That's the coach and he aint as smart as he thinks calling the plays.
Way too many 3rd and 8's.

Ya you are a pain as well as a debbie downer . I watched that Vikes game and Cousins faced a Pettine style 3 man rush - of course he would pick the Panthers apart. But the big thing was that the Panthers totally blew their last possession with stupid passes stopping the clock - they should have let Bridgewater run the ball on 2nd and 3rd - and probably wouldnt have given the ball back - or at least it would have been less than 2 minutes left - as well as a blocked chip shot field goal and an INT in the red zone.

Well said. The offense has always appeared to me as being pure sand lot with Rogers hanging onto the ball too long, always having to scan the field looking for someone to get open and throwing deep on third short, etc.
Not much different than McCarthys offensive scheme ?

This is the funniest post of the day. Yeah...I wish the packers would have ‘regulated’ schemed themselves to a record of 5-6 like the Vikings have. Be nice if everyone ‘knowing what to do’ could help the Pack go 5-6 like the Vikings did. Heck, the Vikings regulated scheme and knowing what to do helped them lose to the powerful cowboys last week. What a team! Lol

I hadn’t seen the Bears since the Tampa game. I was surprised at how bad they were. The Bear defense seemed to give up in the second half. I expected more fight from them. Yes, the Packers had them beat, but it was nonetheless a poor show from them.

Pettine actually used his OLBs differently tonight. It’s not going to be a solution to the run game on its own, but having Gary out there more will help the rush, contain and run game.

Apparently Hicks is the Bears most indispensable player. Maybe even over Mack.

The Packers had no trouble running up the middle, even with a relatively little guy like Jones.

It was nice to do others what they've been doing to us.

Eddie Goldman opted out. Hicks was hurt. It is a different defense with those two. The metrics showed that the bears gave up a yard more per carry when Goldman didn't play.

Nice GB was able to do it tonight all the same.

I did not say that. As soon as he caught the ball, or ran with the ball, it was straight for the sideline. It was almost coincidental the one time he gained the first down because they forced him to almost.

Devante heads up field, not just lateral to sideline.

We will have to see more of a sample size. Because i know the plays you are talking about. I know on the one he literally dove on the ground. But im good with catches and first downs. Once he gets that first down, im good with it. Hes probably their 7th or 8th receiving option after the backs and tes. Just catchthe ball and dont fumble it.

Random Thoughts: The Bears Still Suck. "The Bears' offense is broken". The Rock early during the Packers network. Packers ripped apart a very good Bears defense in all aspects. As good as we see this unit all year. O line excellent tonight, out goes Lindsey not a beat lost. They physically beat a very good DL for the second straight week. Packer defense was what they are when they are playing well. Constant pressure, cutting down the pocket lanes for both RB and QB and of course turnovers, which led to three TDs. Raven Greene had a bit of an off night, but the Bears did not run or try to pass on his side for most of the game. The combo of Greene and King on that side of ball teams shy away from. King in the lineup is a difference maker. The number of top ten defenses beat up today is the nature of the NFL. 25 is the new 10. Makes for junk football like the fourth quarter. Packers were outstanding in all three phases of the game. Yay MLF. Yay Pettine. Yay Mangwhathisface... Still wondering how much the earlier Convid-19 hits has effected this roster, is this team just getting over the virus how? WE WON! (I feel better) I need a (root) beer...

If the O line plays like this and the D makes a few plays per game this team can beat anyone. First the Colts and now the Bears D and the offense showed that unless they fumble it or make a penalty they pretty much can't be stopped. 180 rushing yards? Damn. This team needed to see that and what it opens up for them.

Why do the Bears suck? It starts at the top. Moving up in the draft to take Mitch Trubisky while Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes were on the board has to be one of the biggest boneheaded draft decisions in NFL history. Now Mahomes and Watson are the two top rated QBs in NFL history ahead of Aaron Rodgers. How sad it must be to be a Bears fan.

Even more than that: the investment in Mack--who was a hail mary by Pace trying to save his job with a high-profile, franchise-defining move--hasn't paid. Too much in cap...too much in draft resources. Pace has made a series of high-end gaffes that haven't paid off.

That was a bet on Trubisky improving enough to provide at least a modicum of offense. Mack has delivered as promised. The Bears could have used the Denver model to winning a super bowl. Maybe it was too much $ and too many picks.

I think Players miss tackles and are out of position too often.

I was wondering about The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

The Good: the offensive line. No QB hits on AR, and opened holes. Runyan was better.

The Bad: Not too much, but perhaps the prevent defense and King's inability to catch the ball when it is right there for the interception.

The Ugly: Kirksey. Rough game in space on the edges. Perfect recognition and great position on the interference call in the endzone but still gets the PI. Ticky tack but that has to be a game changing play. So so in the run. This play is bizarre and I don't blame Kirksey for the 57 yards run by Montgomery since it looks like Kirksey has to respect Trubs keeping it and rolling outside. Looks like maybe Martin shouldn't flow with the blocking but stay put to cover the A gap. I'll let someone with Xs and Os knowledge explain this weird defense (thanks to Omar Reborn finding and posting this tweet):

Look like two misreads. One by Clarke in gap responsibilities. The other by the rookie Martin in not covering the A gap. Martin got fooled, Clarke got walled off. Notice Martin wasn't in there till the second half. It was a well design play to take advantage of the Packer defensive tendencies early before the Packers adjusted. It happens.

They can only beat who is there. And they looked good. Even the D was not so bad, like some of the drama queens here like to act. Dont know when they stop with that complaining about everything. The only thing what may help them is 20 season without playoffs and no chance to get in there by November.
The O looked great and there was never a need for more weapons. We got more than most teams and when AR is AR and the playcalling there, no one can stop us. St. Brown and MVS are better than get credit for. And you could see that 3 years ago. Running game seems unstopable sometimes and the line may be the best in football.

D was not bad at all, at times and Gary lived more than up to his draft status. Dont know where you can find a much better team in the NFC, but some just like it to bitch around all the time.
Befor the season, a lot of guys thought there would be no football this year. Now we made it till here.
The next thing was, the PACK will take a step make for sure because last year was luck and easy schedule. Now we are here looking real good and standing in range of the nr.1 seat, just to cry over some details.
There is no perfect world, but we are doing extremly good and I just wish some guys would be way more thankfull. And not just on Thanksgiving

Those fans just wanna see a shutout. But what they dont realize is the point in the fourth quarter when it was 41 10 was to just let them slowly drive down the field and eat some clock. If kk grabs that ball its 41 17. Does that make these guys feel better? In the 3rd quarter the bears did nothing and the pack scored 14. It was over after that. If this defense holds teams to 25 a game in the playoffs, that means we just gotta get 26 a game and its another lombardi trophy. Rodgers and co if healthy will get you to 26 every time.
