Gut Reactions: Packers beat down Bears

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers win over the Bears.

  • The Bears Still Suck
  • Loved the emphasis on running the football and getting the ball to Aaron Jones tonight.
  • Wonder if the Packers will ever run motion again?
  • Seriously though, I don't know if Watson was late running across or if Myers was late with the snap, but whoa baby there are a lot of people on Twiiter who seem certain of one of the other.
  • Nice to see Sammy Watkins get involved.
  • Can we put the absurd comparisons of Davante Adams and the Packers WRs to bed now, national media? Thanks.
  • Preston Smith played a hell of a game tonight.
  • I honestly think Fields scored on that 4th quarter goalline run. But I'll take it.
  • The Packers defense sure seemed to think the game was over early in the 4th quarter.
  • Amari Rodgers had a nice return and then had a muffed punt that thankfully didn't cost the team. Gotta secure the ball before you get upfield, young gun.
  • Pat O'Donnell revenge game.
  • Few things better than beating the Bears in Lambeau.
  • Go Pack Go.

Aaron still owns the bears. And it feels good.
Defense, big improvement over last week, even though if I had any beef, my gut reaction during the game was keying on the linebackers not stepping up to fill the running plays. It just felt like too many runs were getting to the secondary.
Credit the offensive line, they did much better. WTG guys.
Aaron Jones is an absolute slasher. Love it
Will be great to listen to Chicago radio tomorrow. They will be throwing everybody under the bus.

Credit the Bears backs too, they weren't running through truck sized holes for most of the night. Yes, there were some big lapses in coverage. But they were squeezing through tiny holes and exploding through them, much as Jones was all night so we can't really complain too much about that lol.

I can hear the Bear fans now, Fields scored and they got screwed. Bears where fortunate that the Packers started making mistakes that let them back in. Maybe they should have held us 3 & out inside our 1, not give up a first down and a 51 yard bomb to Sammy.

Only thing that matters is do we improve enough more this week to beat the Bucs next week.
This was a start but hardly the blowout that this could/should have been.

Special teams looked good except for one Bears long kickoff return which thankfully was called back. Packers punts again looked almost blocked. Leavitt is a beast on coverage teams.

Always to good to get the first win of the season. Packers dominated the first half after the Bears opening drive. They were on their way to ending the game in the 3rd quarter until they fumbled the mishandled handoff to Dillon. The Packers need to play a full 60 minutes but they came up with the goal line stand and the big pass to Watkins put the game away late.

Rodgers ran the MLF offense very effectively in this game. The run game was outstanding and the Packers need to stick with it going forward. Jones was explosive in this game. Jenkins made a big difference in his return.

Defense had a strong game except for the Bears opening drive. On to Tampa. GPG! Thanks, Since '61

Not only was Jenkins a big upgrade at tackle, but it allowed Newman to replace Hansen at guard which doubled the upgrade. If Bakh is ready for the Buc game that would be great.

The perfect get well game; things should be back to normal for a few days.

Since A. Jones and Montgomery both went through the opposing defenses like forestry mulchers (their stats were amazingly similar), the difference in the game was largely the connection between AR and the veteran receivers. That and a huge edge in TOP.

Erasing that 2nd-and 28 in the first half was impressive, nice scamper by Doubs.

Great game from Preston. I loved the way he waited on the LOS for Fields to make a move, and then pounced on him like a cat for the sack. And his effort on the goal line kept the game from getting interesting.

Fields: 7/11 for 70 yards. The Bears passing game is about anemic as it gets. They miss Allen Robinson, and they really need to get some weapons in the off-season.

Fields has no one to throw the ball to. I just don't get how you take a 2nd year QB and give him that reciever room. Extremely bad management.

That's the Bears, all right. Getsy is going to struggle with this group. But they might want to think about throwing the ball to a tight end once in a while, too.

Now that the first of two annual chump-games are done, and erased some sour taste from the mouth, let's not think the Bucs will be Bear-like next week, even if the Bucs this week looked like what we all want to forget last week.

The way the defense played on the first drive had me thinking, "Oh no, here we go again."

Myers had at least three plays that stood out to me in a negative way.

Thank God Jenkins was back.

Um, where was that offensive game plan last week? That is who the Packers are, and who they need to be.

Sammy Watkins has talent he just needs to stay healthy. If he can, he could be the steal of the year.

In all fairness, he was not today, but having Newman over Hanson was a big step up and the two were a big improvement. Jenkins will be better: rust was to be expected. Just good to have him back.

He’s been out quite a while and has barely practiced. I will cut him some slack because even bellow his best, he’s much better than any other option and Newman is much better inside. Just glad to have him with rust. Bakh we can take time with. We really needed Jenkins out there as soon as we could.

Jenkins has PRACTICED quite a bit.

He was rusty in his first GAME experience.

THAT is exactly why starters need to play in the pre-season.

Yeah, playing an injured guy in the preseason game was going to happen. He didn't play in team drills until after the last preseason game.

This seems like a "back in my day" comment.

Johnblood27 was talking in general. All players after more than 6 months out of the football have a little time to adjust to speed of the game. That was the idea!

Not player who was on PUP. Why? Because he is on PUP (Player UNABLE to Perform!).

I think they would have held Jenkins till next week if the need wasn’t as strong. I read both LaFleur and Rodgers’ comments as essentially expressing gratitude for him being out there and for the difference it made while acknowledging it meant Jenkins taking some bumps for the team, especially early.

I agree: the Packers dropping him in there showed a sense of urgency. They needed to win this game, and couldn't run the risk of falling to 0-3 after TB or potentially 0-4 (post NE). He worked the kinks out v. Chicago, and--assuming no setbacks--should be better against TB. It might take the pressure off 69 to play next week.

They didn’t need to look forward to TB (NFC) or NE(AFC), it was all about Sunday. Can’t afford to drop two division games to start the season.

- Lambeau cures a lot of things.
- Was thinking Tonyan would be a big part of the gameppan this week.
- Awesome to see Lazard get a tuddy
- Cobb for sure is a bear killer. He didn’t do much for splash plays…..but he gets those chains moving.
- Special teams does look like it’s moving in the correct direction.
- I like that the D was solid enough and clamped down for the most part, but that they still have stuff to work on. They were too cocky before the season even started. Put it on the film now.
- Tampa didn’t look awesome today. Only three points into the fourth quarter. The Saints imploded more than the Bucs best them. I think initially chalked this up as a loss, but if Evans gets suspended and Godwin isn’t back……we have a sporting chance.

Accident waiting to happen is that MASON's kickoffs barely make it to the end zone. Most land 1-2 yards deep. Pretty much every KO will be returned, and that's worrisome.

I’m alright with the way the defense played. They were in Nickel all night, if a team wants to run out the clock by running the ball (down 17) then uhhhh sure go ahead. Although I’m concerned of the recipe for injury with needing smaller dbs to come up and tackle guys like D Montgomery (that dudes a stud).

So far early in the season the team has actually shown it can move the ball fairly well. Once inside the ‘gold zone’ they’ve played closer to bronze. They haven’t finished drives very well but once Tonyan is 100% and back in game shape and the rookies stop impacting the game with terrible mistakes this team will be good.

Something from last seasons play call sheet I think MLF might consider bringing back is the aid of the TE’s staying in and chipping the Ends into a late release as a secondary receiving option. It worked really well last year which is a shame that they got away from it, most notably against SF in the playoff game. This is the biggest reason for the two week 1 duds the last two years. MLF went into both games creating a play sheet designed as if he had both of his stud tackles. The fact is the playcalling changes with personnel. Nijman is serviceable but he’s not an all pro like Bahk. Same with a preferred guard at tackle instead of Jenkins. When you can’t throw because of pressure it makes rhythm and timing very difficult. If you don’t believe me just wait and watch the next time the team plays the Vikings. Assuming the desired o line is out there the game will be so unbelievably different but mainly because those TE are now free to run routes and be primary options instead of chipping. The running backs can as well.

With all that said this team is a failed 4th down conversion from the 1 yard line, a field goal try instead of going for it on 4th from the 20 and a rookie dropping a ball that couldn’t have been handed to him more perfectly away from 2-0. That’s the difference, 2 play calls and a brain fart

I agree with your analysis until the last paragraph. You really think the Packers were that close to beating the Vikings? They were badly outplayed on both sides of the ball. The whole second half was essentially garbage time.

Well it’s simple math really. Assuming Crosby can hit a 29 yard field goal, Watson can outrun the defenders for a TD and scoring a TD instead of Minnesota stopping them and marching down and getting a field goal that makes the score 24-21.

Do I think how the team played was good? No. Do I think adjustments needed to be made? Yes. Do I think the team sucks and needs to make wholesale changes? Absolutely not. Green Bay could have won that game despite how poorly they played was the point. Minnesota played their best and GB played what could be their worst but the difference was those three plays. The team had chances they just didn’t take advantage. We will find out a lot more about the team this week in Florida.

Always great to beat da bearz!

Aaron Jones looks as great as he was before he signed the big contract. So glad the team kept him

Is anyone else kinda of happy that Devonte Adams and the Raiders are 0-2? I guess I shouldn't be.....but I am

Our Run Defense got gashed 2 weeks in a row in the 2nd half of the game. I hope this is due to no live tacking and lack of live game reps in the preseason. Probably just the front 7 getting tired later in the game and will gain more stamina as the season progresses?

Romeo Doubs athleticism is obvious. Can't wait to see him and Watson in the 2nd half of the season when they have more experience and time developing chemistry with Rodgers.

Jenkins had some rust, but he basically looked good out there. So glad he's back and Hansen was forced out of the lineup

Eagles will beat the VIQueens tomorrow and we will be tied for first in the division

Big game on the road next week . I expect a competitive game

Go Pack!

Actual balance on the targets count, and a dedication to running the ball. Heavy sets. motion. THIS is what LeFleur's offense is supposed to be built around.

A good foundation to grow on, more work to do, but a huge step in the right direction. If Rodgers remains patient, he should find that the big plays downfield will be there, and when the opportunities arise, they should be big opportunities.

Let's just hope this trend continues. too many times in the past we've seen "i told you so" games followed the next week by a revert to bad habits.

Just like last season, they righted the ship in week 2 against a bad division rival. Good to see the veteran WRs making some plays. Watkins even showed some big play ability. I thought the pass protection was pretty poor against a Bears defense that isn't very good anymore. Jenkins helped a lot, but the O-line still needs work.

On defense, that first Bears' drive for a TD was discouraging, and it was a real head-scratcher to see Jaire Alexander get torched by Equanimeous St. Brown. They were better after that. The corners and OLBs were especially good. Quay Walker continues to look like a real player. The defense was slow to adjust when the Bears kept feeding the ball to the RBs in the second half. At least I hope it was a case of them being slow to adjust, and they aren't really that soft against the run. Still a lot of work to do there.

Special teams were good except for Amari's muff, which thankfully was recovered easily. Crosby not getting his kicks deep into the end zone was not a problem because most of them were not returned to the 25-yard-line anyway. The long return near the end doesn't count because it was negated by a penalty, which is what happens with most long kick returns.

The real test comes next week against one of the better teams in the league. The Packers will need to play better than they did last night to win that game. But they are on the right track.

Agree with a lot of what was said.
Commitment to run the ball was a key--helps that they were breaking off chunk yardage in the run game--but it opened up some things downfield. How much is Jenkins and getting Hanson off the field? How much is Lazard and Watkins blocking? How much is what seemed to be extended snaps for Marcedes Lewis?

Jenkins showed some signs of rust, but shook it off. I wonder if they bring Bakhtiari back next week against TB: it's not often you say, "maybe they're better off putting him out there in his comeback game v. NE"...and if you do, do you shift JRJ to RG, Nijman to RT, and put Jenkins at LG? When Bakh comes back, it will be a nice problem to have.

Hello, Sammy Watkins. A couple nice grabs for him. They used him poorly last week on mostly short stuff (he seemed to be running Lazard routes). The guy can still run, and I wouldn't be surprised if he still ends up the nominal top WR for ARod.

Defense played really good football for all but two Bears drives. Kept Fields in the pocket and did a nice job of pressuring him on his limited dropbacks. They'll have to clean up the run D...if I'm every offensive coordinator on the Packers' schedule from here on, I'm going to work that zone/stretch play until the Packers prove they can stop it consistently. Montgomery was a beast in that role.

Defense finally logs a TO on the Jaire INT. This defense MUST continue to get better at forcing TOs. Those are the equivalent of the 3-run HR...must take the ball away and the offense needs to be better in protecting the football.

All told, a nice turnaround from week 1. TB will be a tall order in the heat and on the road.

It’s hard to force turnovers when there are only 11 passes. I think we saw the front 7 heavily focused on containing Fields, and rightly so, but the knock on from that caused issues in the run game especially when we were playing to prevent big plays in the second half (and gave them up on the ground instead). Some things to fix there. This week we don’t have to worry about an QB running threat at least.

Just one clean up point. On the ball that hit Watson. Per Aaron Rodgers the mistake was Myers snapping on one rather than two. This was not Watson’s fault.

I would need to watch the game again to know for sure, but did it appear the Bears attacked Lowry's side with the run? On at least a couple of good gainers I saw on replay that Lowry was washed out of the play seemingly easily. Overall, I like what Lowry gives the team, but once in a while I scratch my head watching the seasoned vet. Don't get me wrong, I believe there's plenty of blame to go around for Montgomery's big night. That all said, kudos to the D for its ability to not only "git 'r done" but do it in many impressive ways.
