Gut Reactions: Packers dominate Titans

Aaron gives his gut reactions from the Packers commanding victory over the Titans.

  • God I love snow games.
  • Love how many plays on defense we saw tonight where Gary afftected the quarterback and Savage made a play on the ball. Good combo from Gutekunst.
  • What up EQ?
  • Davante Adams is the second best WR I've ever seen in a Packers uniform. (Sterling Sharpre is the first)
  • Rodgers throw up the right sideline to Adams for the TD was absolutely absurd.
  • We got ourselves an AJ Dillon game.
  • The fact that the Packers can have their starting right tackle go down and I don't worry about it is absolutely nuts.
  • At one point tonight, Ryan Tannehill brought back the ghost of Dom Capers with that TD run.
  • But he also brought back the ghost of Jay Cutler with some of those throws.
  • Now do folks understand why the Packers want playoff games in Lambeau... (I've heard a LOT of folks talking about how it doesn't matter)
  • Rashan Gary was absolutely out of his mind tonight.
  • I love this team.
  • Go Pack Go.

I've been saying in articles on this site all season that the Packers are a championship-caliber team and should be the top contender in the conference.

Many called me a homer and said this team couldn't beat a real contender.

Whole lotta doubters gonna be silenced tonight.

All the "realists" on here talkin bout fans wearing green and gold glasses. Where are they? Everyone saying this team cant win against a good team. The offense is legit unstoppable with dillon running like that and aaron jones and davante. And the defense. Rashan gary. 5 pressures. 5 tackles. And all three edge rushers forced a turnover. Savage is becoming a savage. Amos is a beast. This is NOT the defense from september. Those year 2 guys are making their jumps, k clark is healthy and the smiths are doing what they did last year. Z never stopped but we all know p smith had a rough first 8 games. If the offense gets the lead the d can get sacks and turnovers.

Flexibility from Pettine. 5 man fronts. This was, finally, a response to the 49ers. It worked. I confess I’d given up hope that Pettine was capable of making that leap

The bottom line is pettines bs of letting teams go 12 to 15 plays down the field and hoping they will make a mistake does not fit the makeup of this team. For one thing it keeps rodgers on the bench. And the other reason being the corners and Safetys are playing some of the best ball in the league. Let em fuckin play! Id bet that lafleur got in pwttines ass too. Told him to let jaire n kk n the two safetys man up and let the front loose. We have the personel to take risks. On d and O.

His big philosophy was man/press coverage. Now they are willing to play it. The 5-2/4-2 looks were doing the job on Henry. All of a sudden, its Bear Week for the gold.

40-burger! Oh my gosh Jaire. Why would anyone throw at him? AJ Dillon, I’m so glad we fed you tonight. Savage has a career game if he holds on to the ball one more time. Gary is making some commenters look foolish. Adams...just so excellent. Extend Pettine. Finally a complete game on both sides of the ball and the guys had a blast. Henry who? I thought it was possible we could back into the #1 seed, but now I’m confident we can crush the hopes of the Bears and take care of business next week.

I appreciate that Taryn is courageous and caring enough as a fan to point out what seems obvious to many of us: The defense has been exasperatingly shaky to the point of driving us crazy.
I've also been highly critical of the defense, but called that they would have a good game containing Henry -- yet only one thumbs up in my comment below?
I wonder how many fans here at CheeseheadTV want to be fair?
Are we going to be quick to criticize, but reluctant to praise?
By the way, the defense still isn't out of the woods with one impressive performance.
It was great to see, but any complacency and we're going to get humbled, if not humiliated.
The key to the Super Bowl is to not get too high or too low, but honest assessment game to game, and a determination to play hard and smart all the way through.

Never mind Taryn, I’m interested to see what Nagler puts down for the Good, Bad and Ugly.

Should be a relatively clean sheet on the bad and ugly side this week - perhaps special teams on that blocked FG and return that got called back.... or maybe Nagler’s beer was 2 degrees too warm this week :)

..... actually, maybe AJ Dillons Lambeau Leap needs a bit of work. Size of those trunks he’s sporting he should almost be able to box jump up there!

Not sure he is a JAG but would like to see some stats as to how well they move the ball on his snaps. He certainly is rock solid in pass protection and has been from day one. I don't see GB being able to pay Jones.
Jones and Williams in their rookie season teamed with Montgomery to have a better average gain per touch than Laveon Bell when he was eating up the league. And that was under McCarthy so I think MLF can scheme a Dillon/Williams/? combo to be pretty effective.

I have definitely questioned Savage's play over the last two seasons.
Frankly, he hadn't shown me any reasons to believe he should own a starting position until the last 5 weeks.

Now it looks like he's coming on strong, more and more each week. But prior to the last few games, he showed a lot of poor angles of pursuit.

I'm happy he's showing out, but there were definitely reasons to be weary of his performance early on.

I saw the same thing. The physical tools were always there but definitely some rough edges that are getting smoothed over. Same with Gary. They are both poster childs for the old adage to give draft classes time to develop.

And it could not possibly happen at a better time with those two.

Oppy's picture

December 28, 2020 at 07:29 pm

He does have excellent closing speed, but if you take poor angles of pursuit, that speed is a wash and it's wasted trying to recover from a poor approach to the ball carrier / intended receiver.

Sort of like a LB who runs 4.5 but can't diagnose and break down quickly vs. a linebacker with 4.7 speed who reads and reacts instinctively. two tenths of a second over 40 yards might equate to a tenth of a second advantage over the 25 yards from between the hashes to the sideline for a tackle, but if it takes the player three tenths of a second longer to diagnose the play or he takes false steps, that speed advantage is completely negated.

Thankfully, Savage has looked much better the last 5-6 games and he's starting to show his value. I was starting to become concerned he might just be a gifted athlete, but not necessarily a gifted football player. He's proving me wrong.

Best game of the year! Loved Pettine taking Henry away and forcing Tannehill to try to beat the Packers with his arm. That's what good coaches do - take away what the other team loves to do best and make them try to execute an uncomfortable game plan.

Dillon was a revelation. The return of Linsley made the OL much better. Put these two facts together, and Aaron Jones could be playing elsewhere next season. Jaire Alexander is insanely good. Pettine actually had some excellent blitzes that actually pressured the QB into bad throws. Did he just guarantee himself another year in Titletown? Tannehill, who had been on the rise, ends up with a passer rating of just 40. Did Rodgers just win the MVP? Crush the Bears next week, take some time off to get ready for your next opponent, and keep that pedal to the metal, offense. And keep crushing it, defense. Great win. I'm so amped up, I might not sleep for a week. GO PACK GO!

To be honest, most of the starters deserve game balls; Pettine, too. In the Gameday Preview, I didn't have Dillon outgaining Henry -- but I did have Dillon going for at least 50 yards rushing, and also showing at least a little bit of his own version of Derrick-Henry power running; plus I had the Packers defense rising up to contain Henry for less than 150.
Well done all around for the Green Bay Packers, including a rumbling A. J. Dillon, and an adaptable defensive coordinator in Mike Pettine.

Dillon goes side to side at times if there is no hole but when he goes straight ahead - oh my.

Who coached the defense today? They: made a formation change that was well designed for the opponent, had some creative blitzes, were aggressive all game long, dominated the game!

I hope we see some of this 5 D linemen scheme against Chicago. Stop Montgomery and I will take my chances with Trubisky.

Ok the Packers are now 12 - 3. Averaging over 31 points per game. They have scored more points than anyone in the league and have a chance to score 500 points for the season. Best Oline in the league. Best QB in the league. Best WR in the league.

On defense they have averaged giving up 20 points per game since week 9.

Seven players in the pro bowl.

Doing ok so far. But far more to go. Now time to finish it. Eliminate the Bears and get the bye.

Gut reactions? It’s very, very simple. GB played a complete game. All things considered, there was nothing about this game that upset me. Let’s do this to the Bears now.

I’f still caution on special teams. We were lucky to have that blocked kick return negated. That was a huge call and a horrible ST example negated

They have to get the middle fixed on FG and punt teams. I liked Gafney's performance at the FB spot then some edge work playing a HB role. He is starting to get energized and the Pack must have a lead blocker to deliver the blow at the point.

I have said from day 1 Gary is for real and got nothing but thumbs down , if you're the number 1 high school prospect in the country that means something.

He just needed a year to change positions from DL (college) to OLB (pros). His abilities are becoming increasingly apparent and the thumbs down are going to get fewer and fewer.

Well, Burns, Dexter Lawrence and Simmons would all have been better picks (so far). It is great that Gary can play in the NFL. It is always a bigger deal when there is a consensus alternative for the armchair GMs, and in this Armchair GM's case, all three on his wish list would have been better.

This was probably one of Gary's best games and to my mind, maybe his most complete game. His stats belie how good he was. His stats are good without being great: 5 tackles (3 solo). But he had some pressures and some nice run defense even though none were tackles for loss. He keeps improving so his ceiling is unknown. Gary entered the game with a 56.8 PFF grade. It should go up noticeably.

Great game by Gary but one game does not make him anywhere as good as my favorite Packer LB, one season Ted Hendricks, still don't understand how they let him go after 72 season. Back to Gary I have been on his case for two years, Chris Collinsworth says he didn't know the game before GB could be right. Attack on defense balls to the wall every play go down fighting. NE always gives great effort win of lose on defense I hate it but I do admire it. 2010 they played got SB win lets go all out again.

Ok - I will admit that I didnt think that we were going to stop Henry and thought that if we could hold him to under 100 like the Bears did we would have a chance. That was killer D for the most part. Now what do people think about the Dillon as our second round pick. Why did Lafleur finally give him a chance to carry the rock - right on Coach Dino. Glad we finally got a win that wasnt really in doubt - glad we finally came out and got a score on our first possession in the second half - that was gut check after they cut it to a 2 score game and then we we scored after the D got the ball back - that was game over.

seems everyone agrees it was our best performance of the season: the true secret: keep J K scott off the field, cures half of our special team ills, but what a nice game tonight and finally putting some big guys on the field paid results on D.

Speaking of JK scott.. Nobody seemed to notice he was the player who eventually tackled the Titan player who was returning the blocked field goal attempt. It was a true tackle, too, not a sideline push out or hapless attempt to simply get in the way.

That's a big step for the young punter who has looked less-than-willing to be physical on last-line-of-defense punt return duties.

Be interesting to see how Dillon will be used the rest of the year into the playoffs. The guy is a stud and a game changer especially in cold weather games. Against Chicago and the 1st couple of playoff games I'd use a heavy does of Dillon over and over.

Extrapolating it further it will be very interesting to see how the RB position plays out next year with a full training camp and Dillon in year 2.

Does he give you the 2010 Starks vibe? Big powerful violent runner comes on at the end of the season. Ride him through the playoffs.

- They played the whole game
- Defense put forth more effort. I wonder if their tackling woes are mostly mental. If they approach every game like this one, the packers are going to very tough to beat.
- I did not like the 4th and 3rd attempt after blocked FG. The FG would have made it a 3 TD game + 2 pt conversion.
- AJ Dillion
- Adams, that one catch at end was something else.
- Adams had such sure hands for a snow game, along with footwork highlighted the whole game

- At the beginning, the PFF rankings for some defenders was sad. Several in 80s, and I swear King was 100 out of 133.

Our D just held the number 1 scoring offense to 14 points! Could our O and D be playing their best football as we're heading into the playoffs? Look out!

The phantom offsides call was a huge turning point in the game. I think we still thoroughly outplayed them but it does mar the game a bit. It also reminds me our ST are a real issue...

It's a bonus that Chicago might think they've got a qb for next year, right?

That last throw from Rodgers to Adams up the left sideline was the epitome of greatness. I literally was laughing out loud at how absurd it was. Those two are the best at what they do, hands down. Go Pack Go!

This team is built to take risks on defense. Give pettine some credit for finally doing it. Send the blitz. Let kamal martin fly in their even tho hes probably gonna miss. Play 5 man fronts. Your corners and safetys will make more plays than not. So will the smiths gary and clark. And if they score quick?? So what. We got the lead already. And were gonna get more. And we got aj dillon in the snow. Just gotta go beat the bears now. Play of the day. Allen lazard helpin out aj dillon on his second attempt at the lambeau leap. Lazard always doin the little things.

I'd "double thumbs up" that one if I could. And it doesn't even cover everything that Gutey's done:
- all 4 free agents last year were key players and filled gaps (the Smiths, Amos, versatile T/G Billy Turner)
- Elgton Jenkins!
- Alan Lazard out of no where
- Barnes as a rookie free agent starting
- Martin looking like a real good 5th round rookie
- rookie TE Josiah DeGuara looked really good before injury
- rookie 6th round G Jon Runyan, Jr looks like a great pick
- rookie 7th round safety looks like a good pick

Some other picks look to have some promise, IMO an impressive start.

When was the last time we saw the Packers run for it twice on 3rd-and-3... and convert?! We unveiled a powerful new weapon today in Dillon. It reminds me of 2010 when Starks emerged right in time for the playoffs. The Packers could be peaking at the right time! Rodgers is razor sharp and should win the MVP. Our running game has thunder and lightning. Even more encouraging, our defense is finally jelling. The discussion for many years has been that if we could ever get a top ten defense we could go all the way. Guess what? We have one now and have a great shot at the #1 seed. Gotta stop hyperventilating and take things a game at a time, but I like where this team is at right now!

What is ironic - we thought our games against Carolina and Detroit were going to be blow-outs, and the Derrick and Titans would run wild and I must admit I had a tight sphincter until late in the fourth quarter. Go Pack Go.

That little chit chat that Pettine had with the Smith Boyz a couple of weeks ago has become priceless. It sure looks like the defensive players are feeding Pettine good intel and he is trusting them to be part of the game plan.

Do you remember the “Mother Of All Bombs” a few years ago? Well that’s what Mr. Dillon gave us last night. WOW!! He is gonna be a weapon....stacked boxes will allow Mr. Rodgers to pick apart any defense.

And in fairness, the weather had a lot to do with the big win last night. We played awesome as we should, but those Tennessee players are not use to those conditions. As many of you have said......that is the great thing about home field advantage at Lambeau!!

Great game PACK!!

Strong game against a playoff caliber opponent. If they're peaking NOW, this team can go all the way.

For all of those complaining about draft picks from earlier in the year, I'd say you need to look in the mirror and CARRY THE G!
