Gut Reactions: Packers beat up on Panthers

Aaron gives his gut reactions to the Packers win over the Panthers.

  • For a coach that is famous for saying "All Gas, No Fucking Brake" his team seems to love getting up by a couple scores and taking their foot off the gas.
  • They won.

The “all gas” was flatulence, the entire second half. Lucky they weren’t playing the Titans.

Honestly, I think they were playing the Titans once they got up 21-3 early. Not attractive football, but they had more than enough to win. Defense played well. No STs screw ups.

The O will be there when it needs to be.

O line looked like it did in Tampa. Offense tried the same response with the same results. LaFleur has yet to find an answer and kept dialing up the same thing.

Not as sanguine as you. I think the longest pass attempted in the second half went about 8 yards in the air. 7 drives for 88 yards ... that won’t cut it.

.Hard to step on the gas when you have two flat tires and coast to the side of the road.one flat tire was the o line giving up 5 sacks. The other was Rodgers only wanting to force throws to Adams when RPO to Jones was better option.

Take the win. Should have been a blowout but at least they came out strong early built a lead and then let down.
Hopefully the Chiefs can take the Saints tomorrow.

I don’t know why they kept those short out passes to Adams. Too many sacks allowed as well. Patrick gave up
at least 3 sacks.

Still #1 seed. Bring on the Titans.

MLF has to be the worst half time speech coach ever. How many times have they come out flat after the half? Don't ever complain about how we fans get nervous about how the Packers might find a way to lose. There is something seriously mentally wrong with this team. That doesn't happen with championship teams.

Very nice way to play down to the other teams level of play. Is it just me but whenever there is a whole bunch of talk about how Great AR is - he has a bummer game. In the Tampa game it was all about who is better AR or Tommy B - This time it was about how many MVP's should he won. In the second half he held the ball and sat in the pocket, Now we had drops Lazard, Adams. We had missed blocks - but what happened to the presnap movement.

Nice tackling by the Defense - on their field goal. Nice dumb penalty by King again - a really dumb one. Kirksey still sucks - when you see their tight end turn around - dont you close on him?

Our CBs did not play well. King had a bad night in everything and Jackson's tackling (usually the better part of his game) was crappy.

The run defense was pretty good and has looked better over the last couple of games. I wonder how much that has to do with (1) Keke replacing Lancaster in the starting DL and (2) playing more Barnes/Martin at the Mike ILB and moving Kirksey to the pursuit/coverage ILB?

And what happened to the vaunted #1 offense in the second half?

At least they won........

Jackson??? Didnt play bro. Our corners actually played very well. Robby anderson did shit. Samuel did shit. Moore caught a 50 50 ball somehow that led to 3. Jaire was lights out in coverage as usual. Amos had at least 2 maybe 3 passes defensed. Savage as well. And king did his job. He missed out ob that one 50 50 balll. And keke didnt do too much against the run. The run d is better because barnes and martin are playing more and lowry and clark are playing better, along with savage and amos helping out a little more as well. Yeah the o fucked up. But the d showed up.

See above apology on Jackson - meant #39, Sullivan (I should never post after 10:00 pm.....brain dead). Alexander played well, but we will disagree on King. I thought he covered and tackled poorly. Safeties also covered pretty well.

I liked our run defense and a lot of it is Martin and Barnes. I thought Keke played well and I much prefer Lancaster subbing for Clark at NT than starting at DE. Seems to be a much stouter defense.

That group of Anderson, Samuel, and Moore are a pretty good group, and Bilgewater does complete 70% of his throws. And yet, they only managed one TD. I don’t think that supports the theory that our secondary didn’t play well.

Didn't say the secondary didn't play well, said that King didn't play well and Sullivan didn't tackle well.. Three of the starters (Alexander and the safeties) did play well. Amos may have played his best game as a Packer.

Most of that was right, minus kevin king. I believe he gave up 126 yards and a QB rating well over one hundred when targeted. It wasn't just bad luck. Guys were wide open on him all day long. His effort and tackling were really poor. If you rewatch the game and focus on him, there were few things he did right outside of being in the right place at the right time on the fumble. He had one of the worst effort plays I have seen this season as well on a sideline tackle where he is the next closest guy only to give basically no effort as his fellow defender struggles to bring the receiver down and gets dragged for another six yards. He needs a preston smith level reality check for his play this season. It's been bad.

*** So we may not have a dashing, daunting, dominating defense after all?
*** Can we give Mason Crosby the nickname Half Dollar because he's good for fifty when it's money time?
*** What is the possibility that in the playoffs we face any teams as fearsome as the Lions and Panthers and Bears, oh my?
*** It's good to appreciate just about any win as a big deal, although wins can keep a team from addressing real problems.

I said McCaffery would give us a better look against the run, but him being out secured a lackluster win, and leaving GB with doubts as to the defense against better. Even the offense may have some doubts or at least some questions. Thanks to Carolina for opening eyes with GB. Next week the Titans just might point out that home field really isn't the security that GB believes it to be, and the one seed makes no difference, or less than thought.

This wasn’t on the D. Probably the best game that the D has played. Barnes and Martin were a big reason for the improvement. This game showed that Tampa’s approach remains an Achilles for our O and LaFleur has no answer.

Next week we may well lament our D, but today be concerned about our O line and play calling.

Tampa's linebackers are athletic freaks and the Panthers are almost as good. This time the Packers ran right at the Panthers gut, which is the weakness of all 3-4 packages. The O line won the first half and I contend won the second half (not by much) too. I'm not complaining about the Packer secondary in this game. Panthers top three WR are all sub 4.3 guys. Even with both CB giving a cushion they held down that group for the entire game. Props to King, Panthers threw to his side all game long. Packers made a commitment to the run game. Wonder if it threw off MLF and Rodgers. Still, the defense came up big in the second half and the Packers won.

3-4 defense is designed to funnel runs back inside where the nose tackle is eating up two offensive linemen and one ILB takes on any free blocker while the other ILB makes the play on the ball carrier. "up the gut" is literally where a 3-4 is designed to be its strongest.

NFL rule changes nullified the main concept of the 3-4 and other odd defensive fronts. I'm not going to on a rant about Goodell and his minions unbalancing the game. The ugly reality is ILB are mostly cover guys in this league and leaves the DL out matched in the line. Pettine's 3-5 is all built to get OLB in the LOS to match up with the Gaps to cover the run. It is the main reason total yards are so high in the NFL.

Credit to the Rhule and the Panthers for showing the league how to beat the hitherto unstoppable Packers offense. If CMC had been playing, game could have went a different way. Ugly wins are still wins, though. We're 11-3! If the Saints drop to KC tomorrow, then we can split the final two games of the season and still get the top seed. Considering that I was optimistically expecting us to go 11-5 this season, they've honestly had a great stretch, all told.

We won! I am sort of glad for a kind of wake up call in second half. Maybe we get benefit of focusing more due to bad play and take that next step to play a complete game. To accomplish this feat the Packers must 1-consistently move the ball 2- tackle 3-don’t completely suck on ST 4- make adjustments at the half that actually help 5-limit penalties 6-no turnovers...I am hoping they are saving their best for the playoffs. Bing Crosby was huge and turned the game on that long kick. Packers did just enough to not lose! Merry Christmas!

The Packers did not look very playoff ready and Tennessee may have them looking worse at home next week also.

Luckily, McCaffery didn't play, as those Red Zone foul-ups by Bridgewater would be McCaffery scoring TDs.

The Saints sure did make Bridgewater look much better than he is.

Not sure how hard it will be for GB to make the SB, but they will play against tougher teams from the AFC.

Don't believe they can own any defense coming for them or GB defense owning any offense either from the AFC.

They look good beating up the lesser though, right?

Yeah. Maybe your right. But those are what ifs. What about the fact that barnes reacted and made the play to swat the ball. Even if mccafrey was in, they were on the one inch line and they thought teddy b could just hop over n get a quick 7. But instead, barnes made a play on the ball. Does he get no credit for that? Lets be real today. The offense was off. But the defense held it down. Against a decent offense. They looked actually bad beating up a lesser d. But as a team the d picked it up. There is a reason the packers have the second best odds to win the big game. And they showed that tonight.

There were several good plays by the defense, and I'm not denying credit for any of them.

We've seen 14 games, and I'm still not sure if the painting the Packers are trying to sell isn't a forgery. Actually, after tonight, I lean more to forgery as they just look fake too often against lesser. Not one win against an above .500 team. The Saints were 1-1 when we played and many here deemed .500 as not a winning record when they played the Bears.

The idea that the fact the Saints were 1-1 when they lost to the Packers somehow means that they should be discounted as not being real competition is kind of silly, don't you think?

Especially considering they have gone a large chunk of the season without Drew Brees and they're still 10-3?

Lighten the hell up CHTV. First half showed the Packers potential. Second half showed why the Packers are so frustrating. The "that won't beat a better team" is bs the Packers get cocky and let teams come back.

Krys Barnes makes the play that saves the F'N game, parlays that into a huge play/hit/TFL on that screen (something him and Martin have shown a knack for sniffing out) .....

NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN in the game. The Barnes/Martin pairing is hands down our best chance on defense. Christian Kirksey is too small and too slow and let a Teddy Bridgewater dash right past him for a TD, plated patty cake with DJ Moore on that long completion in the 4th Quarter. He's terrible.

Kirksey CANNOT START against Derrick Henry next week if we want to win. Let the best players play

Barnes got hurt and left the game. Martin has a tendency to free lance and shoot gaps but not get home. Might have to live with that because I agree that Kirksey is bad. Even Kirksey got a long way downfield on a pass to Samuel IIRC.

Before we start bitching. I have a few things to say. One. Yeah. The offense slowed up a little. But. The d had their back tonight. Passes defensed. A shitload of em. Everyone last week saying kk cant tackle. He literally flipped a dude. All the talk about this d not being physical. Put it to bed. Because the first time this season that the offense couldnt just carry the load, the d showed up. And yeah the panthers are 4 n 9. But thats not because of their offense. Teddy b completes 70 percent of his passes, just like no one else really except aaron rodgers. Mike davis has been a beast in mccaffreys absence. Not today. The only real question i have after this game and the last few games is lucas patrick. He gave up 2 sacks today. But the d. The d showed up. When we needed them to. Against a solid offense.

So many other fan bases would love to be able to complain after their 11-3 team won after never trailing in the game.
Too many Packers fans are spoiled. Imagine having to cheer for the Bears, or Vikings, or Cowboys?

Can't say I agree 100% with that. Sure, Packer fans are a little spoiled. But you could also say that Packer fans are unhappy when the team fails to live up to the standard that it has set for itself. You could also say that with a first round bye at stake, sleep-walking through the second half of any game is unacceptable. And finally, Packer fans understand what it takes to get to and win a Superbowl. Last night's performance was not up to that level, at least in the second half.

MVP awards, Pro Bowls, and personal accolades be damned. It's all about winning league championships and Superbowls.

What happened to all the creativity and motion with the offense? Did Jamaal Williams even play?

I heard Williams got injured.

Matt eschewed the creativity so that he has enough new plays for the post-season. No need to put the tape out there.

Nice to get an A.J. Dillon sighting and it was a nifty run. Let’s see more of him!

Barnes and Martin looked good; Kirksey sucks.

I thought we got Tavon Austin to take Swerve’s place with pre-snap motion. We didn’t look good without it. Why isn’t Austin in there?

I honestly feel like this team lets off the gas without even realizing it. Perfect example. If the game was 21 17. Or even 21 10, do you guys honestly see lazard dropping that ball before the half? He was wide open to keep the chains moving. Yeah it waz a bad drop. But lazard doesnt drop that if its 21 17 in my opinion. He just doesnt.

In my honest opinion. You people love to bitch. This d showed up. The defense that most of you have been crying about. That defense. They showed up. Most weeks this season we are crying about giving up a garbage td. This week. We didnt get the extra td. But it wasnt necessary. 16 points allowed. To a qb who averages 70 percent completion % truth is. Lucas patrick finally got exploited. When linsley comes back. Patrick might end up on the bench.

I choose to believe Matt Lafleur knew exactly what he was doing.

Packers play best when they have lots of motion in the backfield, play-action, misdirection. However, they largely avoided those plays against the Panthers. Why? So that they don't put tape out there. Next week, against the Titans, more of those plays will be seen, just enough to win. We need to keep enough un-shown plays in reserve down the stretch in the off-season.

Panthers realized by the 2nd half that the Packers were going into limited mode, so they tried to take advantage. The fact that the Packers came away with the win means that the Panthers did not succeed. Could the Packers have done better? Sure. Did they achieve their target? Yes.

So yeah... great win! Defense played better, and ST did not suck, which by itself is a big Win :).

Amos had a great game. He had PBUs, limited gains.
Lewis threw some huge blocks, just moving LBs.
Alexander had a good game.
Keke with a sack and some pressures. ESPN lists 0 sacks?
Z and P were okay.
Barnes had some good plays inc. the FF on the goal line.
Martin more good than bad.
Kirksey looked not terrible. Missed tackle on long 40 yd. reception.
I am still a recovering Crosby hater. Money again outdoors/cold.

tonyan missed a few blocks. Had AR barking at him.
Patrick allowed 3 sacks. Had some beautiful run blocks.
Jenkins allowed some pressures. 1st half run blocks nice.
Bakh got beat a few times.
Turner allowed at least one sack and one pressure.
I don't remember Wagner getting beat, but got pushed back some.
All the OL threw some nice run blocks. Massive yards before contact in the first half, but the RBs earned most of the second half rushing yards.

MVS always block. Sometimes Lazard and EQ forgot.
Sullivan with missed tackle on 40 yarder. Up and down.
King had a rough game. Doesn't seem 6'3" or 4.43 either.
Dillon had 1 rush for 18 yards. That's really easing him back in.
5-12 on 3rd downs. Started 2-2 or 3-3, can't remember. Ugly later.
Carolina 4-12 on 3rd and 1-2 on 4th downs. 1-5 in red zone is story of the game.

Offensive game plan seemed disjointed. Few deep shots and that was on a free play and got a PI on a pass intended for MVS. Not a lot of motion. Couple of nice rub routes that really worked. Very little passing in rhythm or quick releases and tons of passes to the flat and on screens, sometimes bubble and sometimes naked. It looked like GB didn't expect to run it down Carolina's throat and was reluctant to show its playbook before the Tennessee game. Weird feel to it.

Defense gave up just 16 points. OTOH, FF on 1st and goal on the one is a 3 to 7 point swing. It is inexcusable for Bridgewater to reach out with the ball in one hand on a first down from the one. You've got 2 or 3 more plays. Great play by Barnes. Carolina kicked the field goal with 2:07 left from the GB 15 on first and 10 due to time. Possible 4 point swing there as well. Still, pretty good defensive effort against the 19th ranked by points scored team.

Another win - Good Job

Hope Bakh isn't dealing with an injury.
Burns was impressive and could of been a Packer - still think Gary is the better fit with more upside.
Preston refuses to play disciplined against the run
I saw Clark pushed back on more than 1 occasion
Defense played well. Held them to just 16pts and with any sort of second half offense to eliminate the numerous 3 and outs it would of been an even better performance.

As I state so often, as ARod goes the Packers go. Something wasn't clicking for him in the second half. Just hand the ball of a bit more than changing it to a screen? I don't know the right term. I can't help thinking he is thinking about stats. Don't know it, but I can't shake the impression I'm getting.

King played to his talent. They are going to complete passes against him due to sheer volume, seldom going to Jaire's side. He's really not bad but he's not a #1 CB in this league. Maybe they can afford to keep him. I didn't even see him on PFFs 50 best 2021 FA list. theres plenty CBs on it.

Thank goodness we didn't waste any resources on the "Speedy" Wr Anderson.

Seemed they blitzed more early on, lessened Prestons snaps, until Gary was hurt, and are leaning on the rookies at ILB to take on more snaps.

The Packers Kicking game is Good, Scott is not the problem. The return defense is the problem.

Looks like ARod is upset about the O's performance which starts with him. Hopefully he zeros it in again.

Why not run Dillon more?

It's natural to let up when you are dominating, they all know better but they are human and subject to the way the mind works.

What scares me the most is how when you know they wanted to sustain a drive on offense and put up a few points they couldn't.

Come playoffs there's a good chance they may have to comeback from behind. Something they have very seldom had to do and haven't look very good when they need to more than not.

It's a win - thats huge. Plenty of teams lose games like these, happens all the time. Hopefully no serious injuries and the Packers have an extra day to heal up and get ready for the next game.

Prior to this game, it was a myth that teams are targeting King more than Jaire. I did the math using PFR, so if their stats are correct, both King and Jaire had roughly the same targets per snap played before this game.

I just don't know why so many fans defend King. He is what he is - a low end #2 CB, which CoachDino seems to recognize. I hope Sullivan rebounds soon or next year at least. Still, the pass defense did limit big plays with the only pass over 16 was the pass where Moore was hit about 7 yards downfield by both Kirksey and Sullivan, but neither wrapped up and Moore scampered for another 30+ yards.

Amos really has shown us how a safety is supposed to come up quickly and limit gains. Love this guy.

Thanks for the correction, I am a big guy on knowing the #'s but was guilty of making an assumption. plus just when I was going to say maybe its due to playing time I recognized you used a very specific stat to show perspective.

I'm not so down on King mainly because of expectations. Corners get beat, some get beat alot. JAire is the exception and he still gets beat.

Wow, what a game buy Amos, I haven't seen a safety shine like that in years.

Never been a Sullivan fan. My hope is that the load up on CBs and Safeties in this draft.
Different types but as flexible as possible, Free Safety, Slot CB, Safety that plays the run but can cover the slot. I'd pay King 3 yrs 6 mil ? Just scary letting a rookie play Outside CB and I haven't seen Hollman, Samuel or Ento (is he around) prove themselves.

Radom thoughts: See TGR's 1:43am and CoachDino's 4:43am comments. I wonder if Mike Pettine reads CHTV comments sections. (I hope not. :-) Sometimes Rodgers forgets he is human too. The lost of J. Williams early in the first quarter hurt this offense in the second half. Looking back at the TV game video, the option blitzes that the Panther's were running would have been picked up by Williams giving Rodgers that extra 1-2 seconds to complete. Panthers second half adjustments beat the Packers second half adjustments. Never thought we see MLF run a ground and pound offense. A. Jones is really going to be sore for the next couple of days. One heck of a game by the RB. That Panther's defense is quick, fast, and athletic. Props to the O line for blowing holds and making adjustments on the fly. Mason Crosby is worth every dollar in his contract. JK Scott had one of his best games this season. No damage by the ST his week... Pettine is doing some interesting things in his player sub groups. Forget about yards giving up, it is points allowed in this league. By that measurement this is a very good defense. Sub par games by both MLF and Rodgers... Still the Packers won. I need a (root) beer...

We saw once again what happens to our offense when the offensive line gets handled. Rogers gets tunnel vision and Throws desperation passes to a blanketed Adams.
You cannot really get too excited over our defense when you're playing against a crappy offense.
Nice to watch the Packers win a lot but they have done so against mediocre to poor teams most of the time.
And come on Green Bay Wisconsin, put some fans in the stands.... it is downright Ridiculous and embarrassing to see nothing but a band of empty aluminum throughout the game.

Aaron Rodgers was the most unhappy winner after the game last night. He knows it needs to be better. He said it himself.

3 days of prep for the football game may have played a part in the offensive breakdown in the second half.

Always fun being 11-3 versus 3-11, BUT....

It's hard to ignore that the Packers have only played 3 teams with winning records and only beat one (the Saints); and even that one felt off in part due to the Saints' injuries at the time. Now comes Tennessee. My gut reaction is to say the Pack will be 11-4 after that game.

Davante and kenny clark were out. The carolina game to me was a big win. Because the offense struggled in the 2nd half. And the defense held another team to just 16 points. And i didnt count but it seemed like they defended like 10 passes. 3 in a row on one drive. They shut down teddy at the end to finish the game. When it was a one score game. When this offense failed, the d picked them up. And with greene and kirksey out this run d has improved the last two weeks. Mike davis is not a slouch. They will be tested against derek henry. But i know this offense will be on point.

Gut reaction 2 ( after sleeping on it). I think some on the team needs to just play ball. AR is on talk shows stumping for the MVP and the years he should of won it; Adams claiming he is the best receiver in the game; Jones sporting his gold glasses, etc. I know this is just confidence talking, but I would rather we just let our play do the talking, just saying! AR has talked before about the team maybe feeling to full of itself and humble pie is good for the soul after a loss. Hope it doesn't take a loss to get a re-focus. Go Pack Go!

Huge sleetstorm getting ready to turn into a monster 10 inch snowstorm. Oh how fun would it be to see a Packer playoff game in this weather at Lambeau?

Mathematically it is impossible but how fun would it be to see Mahomes and company (high scoring offense) have to come to Lambeau and play in such weather?
