Gut Reactions: Packers pulverize Vikings

Aaron gives his his gut reactions to the Packers big win over the Vikings.

  • God that felt so good.
  • It was over when Jaire hit the Griddy.
  • Incredible job by the defense on the initial stand after the blocked punt. Talk about setting the tone.
  • Keisean Nixon is giving off serious Desmond Howard vibes.
  • TJ Slaton played a hell of a game.
  • The fact that the Packers are winning with defense and special teams and Aaron Rodgers only needs to be a complimentary piece and not Superman each and every week is a very good thing.
  • The defensive intensity in the first half was absolutely palpable.
  • Hell of play by Darnell Savage on the return off the tip drill. Good to see him get a little redemption.
  • That pump fake by Rodgers to get the defender in the air so he could then run around him and into the end zone was a thing of beauty.
  • Wait, so Jaire CAN just line up with the opponents best wide receiver if they want him to?
  • Quay Walker was everywhere. I didn't even mind the penalty. Sometime you gotta let guys know it's gonna be a long day.
  • The sequence where Rodgers went hurry up and the Vikings had dudes run off the field, only for Rodgers to slow down and call a play while the Vikings stood there with TEN DUDES and never bothering to run another guy on was absolutely hilarious.
  • Awfully quite game from Za'Darius.
  • This is why you don't put too much stock into Week 1 games.
  • Shout out to Matt LaFleur. This team was left for dead by many (yes, I'll admit, I didn't think it looked good after the Lions loss) but he's kept them together and fighting and now they're in a win-and-you're-in game on the last weekend of the season. I may not always agree with how he approaches every aspect of the team, but that is a serious testament to his coaching ability.
  • It's so great watching this fraud Vikings team get exposed when they have to play football the way it was intended to be played and not in their shopping mall of a stadium.
  • Go Pack Go.

Great win by the D, STs and the run game. Pathetic offensive game plan in the passing game. That’s not a good pass D by any means. Credit to Barry, Bissacia (despite a blocked punt). Yet again LaFleur was a lead weight. That O design and lack of imagination doesn’t cut it and won’t.

I’m happy with the run, Jones was excellent. We have to be more functional and consistent in the air. This was the Ds game but the Catalyst was Nixon then that stand on the one yard after the punt block.

CW. I thought we wanted complimentary football. I thought we wanted the Packers to run the ball. I understand what you are saying, but this game didn't lay out to be a passing game.
I thought Lafleur called a pretty solid game considering the fortunate situation the D and ST's put us in.

Lighten up, Tonyan is starting to pick up his game and just missed his second TD off the 12 man penalty. With Bhaktiari setting the tone people showed up--a Healthy O line. The D-line was given back to Montgomery. Slaton plays to win. Savage was given the FS job and took it to the House and Amos controlled the short zones. Big play by Ford. Douglas is earning his money. This is the style of play that is necessary to win in the Playoffs. The Air Game was fine. Watson had to come down with the bomb. The other pass was PI. Completions would give you another 100 yards. He employed Deguara as a FB for a change. The key is the Synergy. Good Karma.

I could not care whether I’m royalty or a serf. I call it like I see it and I saw it today. I also don’t tell people to stop speaking their mind. If one can’t rebut it, I just ignore it, as you’ve essentially said nothing. Feel free to explain the basis for adequacy in the passing game plan today and it’s efficacy.

You're absolutely right, I have no right to tell anyone to STFU. My bad and I apologize.

You constantly criticize the "adequacy in the passing game plan today and it’s efficacy". I would love to know your actual coaching background. NFL?. NCAA D1? D2? High school?

I'm just a fan and I enjoy when my team does well. Today they did well. 41-17.

I was also underwhelmed by the design and execution of the passing game, but MLF deserves credit overall for what he did otherwise to get this team prepared today.

Right now, I think that - even if Rodgers plays like the Hall of Famer he's been for most of the last 15 years - there's not enough good personnel on offense. Tight ends are subpar (unless Tonyan regains his relative speed) and at wideout, we have savvy but slowish guys in Cobb and Lazard and two (or three if Toure plays) still-developing rookies. Maybe, next year if the Oline and young receivers stay healthy, this could be a dynamic offense again.

So you think that Rodgers and the O carried the team to victory against the Vikings? Also I agree that Rodgers has carried the team for the majority of his career - but not this year - which is where we are at. Currently the Packers offense is rated 17th in the league - while Rodgers QB rating is 13th - which is just above average. Meanwhile Rodgers is the top-paid QB in the league - so with it the expectation that he would perform at an elite level - which he has not.

I would say the main contributor to low offense rating is the constant changes on the O line. With Bakh and Jenkins back and Newman on the bench it has looked much better lately. Tom even came in for Nijman and did a good job at RT.

I thought we finally got a win that people wouldn't complain about too much. Maybe the passing game is a little sluggish because our QB is kinda average, the TEs are below average, and the WRs are still not completely in sync with the QB. I'm not sure what kind of play-calling would overcome that. It would help if Watson could beat somebody deep, which he could not do today, although on that one play where Rodgers missed him deep there was an uncalled defensive holding penalty. The offense was still good overall, even though it took them awhile to get rolling. I like that they are not abandoning the run, as Mike McCarthy often did and LaFleur has done at times.

Sweet Uncle Fester, that was a most satisfying butt-kicking to witness. Great win!

A Defense with an attitude put a thumpin’ on people. 41 unanswered points. A kickoff return for a touchdown. A pick 6. An Offense that put together long drives and scored after turnovers.

And, the best part? An oh-so-sad-fanbase, and humiliated NFL franchise from Minnesota. May the Caravan of Woe have a safe westward journey on Hwy 29. Happy New Year, mofos!

Let’s beat the LOLions and see how this season ends. A rematch in the Shipwreck or a trip out west ? Whatever, it feels good to be in the hunt.

Years ago, at zbuds, Christopher Gates was plying his trade as SuperGonzo, before he became the Daily Norseman. He kind of got on my bad side and I said some unkind, but mostly true things. When he became the Daily Norseman, he banned me. I tried to sneak in, but he kept eradicating me.

Best SuperGonzo quote: 2010 preseason: "The Vikings are the clear class of the division".

The Comanche believed that if it was good for enemy to die, then it was even better that they die painfully. I can relate.

I'm not happy that the Packers beat the Vikings. I'm thrilled that the Packers kicked the shxt out of them!

Today we were treated to championship level defensive play. the score should have been 41-0 if not for the blocked punt. Starting defense pitched a shut out in this game.
Nixon redeemed the ST unit with his great return for a TD.
Packers dominated both side of the LOS. They stuffed the Vikings runs game and the OL was strong leading the Packers run game.
Rodgers did what he needed to do to move the sticks, add points and run out the clock.
Crosby with a huge FG before the half.
Packers best game of the year. No complaints about what is essentially a 41-0 victory.
Bring in the Lions.

I'm not sure what the point is. Does it really matter how we move the ball? I'm fine running the ball for first downs, TDs and chewing up the clock. Some guy named Lombardi was really successful running the ball behind the Best OL in the league and playing shut down defense back in the 60s.

When the Packers pass too often fans complain. Now they run the ball more and fans are complaining we need to pass more. I'll take this game and this win every game of the year forever. How can there be complaints when the Packers essentially won the game 41-0. This is ridiculous. Thanks, Since '61

It matters how consistently we can gain downs and points and it is worth bearing in mind that we may not always be able to rely on the run, the D and STs. The passing game needs to become more consistently effective, maybe as soon as next week.

Coldworld - consistency matters I agree. However when you can run the ball effectively and play strong, solid defense as the Packers did today the passing game can be complimentary to the run rather than the driving force for the offense. for me it's good to see that maybe. finally after all these years the Packers do not need to depend on Rodger's arm to carry the team.

Rodgers was good on 3rd down today because the Vikings needed to respect the run. Lazard and Cobb will continue to be the go to guys in these key games as Watson and Doubs continue to learn how to play. I hope to see more plays to Tonyan as well.

I think that we began to see the offense going through Jones in yesterday's game. Hopefully Jones will get healed up and fed more often if we reach the playoffs. Thanks, Since '61

Where has that been all season?

Maybe not a dominant offensive performance, but they were 7 of 12 on 3rd down and the defense held the Vikes to 3 points and less than 225 yards until their last couple possessions when it was a 4-score game. When the Vikes were driving in the 3rd, Clark's strip followed by that long drive for 7 to put it away was a thing of beauty.

Will savor this one all week.

Barry began the possibility of saving his job, so let's see what he comes up with next week against a tough Lions team -- and then, if all goes well, in the playoffs.
If the Packers continue their run for at least two or three more games, and the defense excels as tactically smart and practically physical, then good for Barry deserving to stay on the job.

Re: Barry. Why did it take to Week 17 for the D to operate on all cylinders? Just as a cautionary note - Jefferson's only reception was when Barry switched to zone - which meant Alexander was not in coverage. So I'm still looking at a list of potential DCs for next year - which means that Packers management is probably not.

This one game isn't enough to save Barry -- but we can hope that even if he's a slow learner, he's an eventual learner.
Perhaps he gets credit for perseverance.
Maybe, just maybe, the defense is beginning to become a force both strategically and physically.

To do that, LaFleur has to revitalize his game plan and ambition in the passing game. The dink, dink, long thing isn’t going to work consistently. Nor is not having Doubs out there with Watson.

I agree, Straya.
Rodgers doesn't need to be a hero -- which is actually counterproductive to the team -- but he can be a winner.
I've been critical of him for interfering with his head coach and GM, but think he still has the talent as a quarterback to possibly lead the Packers to a title, and in any case to bring the team to its full potential.
Paradoxically, if Rodgers stays with a healthy dosage of the running game, and is clever with the passing game, he'll have more opportunities to make the big plays throwing the ball from time to time. To go far, we'll need him to flash his greatness at times, but it will only happen if he truly works with (but under) his head coach, and takes a step back to let his teammates carry more of the load.
I enjoyed Rodgers enjoying himself in the post-game interview on the field with Tracy, and hope he conveys that enthusiasm to his teammates as a leader of men.
As always, I'm rooting for Rodgers to be the best of himself, for his sake as well as ours.

If you recall, last year at this same time, the Packers had won their conference. The team is currently chasing the field - with as much chance to miss the playoffs as make it. Yes, the team has lately been playing better but it would have been much better had it started sooner.

*It was great to see our defense playing up to its early season hype. The only Viking's TDs came with starters out & the defense playing soft.
*Jaire knocking down Jefferson was a thing of beauty.
*The ST TD was long in coming. Let's watch it again and again!
*Wasn't it awesome to have our starters play on the offensive line? Minnesota showed what happens when you lose 2. So glad it was their turn.
*We gave another playoff game next week! GPG!

So refreshing to see us play with an attitude. On many of those runs, our OL just knocked the defenders back several yards which opened up huge opportunities for Jones in particular. Nice to see Rodgers using his legs when he needs to. The D was flying all over the place and loved Walker’s atomic pile-driver even though he got flagged. Lets see that same intensity next week!!

I'm under no illusion that this is anything except a fundamentally flawed team with too many holes to be anything more than a pest in the playoffs. Bringing back the old QB with a rebuilding and young team was the height of hubris and stupidity and I think the Packers will be paying the price for years to come. It has been years since I have disliked a Packer team this much. The 1999 and 2015 teams come to mind, as does the 1991 team.

That said, kicking the poop out of a Vikings team that is no better than us, yet has been extremely lucky at every turn was a lot of fun.

Since we can't go back and redo the offseason, I'll hope we beat Detroit ( I think we will) and hope the 9ers lose to AZ (I think they won't). Then facing and hopefully ending Minny's season would be sweet as can be expected for this year.

It's a good point to not get too giddy.
How far the Packers can go mostly depends on Rodgers being more coachable and more agreeable. He still has enough of his skills to lead this team to victories, even in the playoffs.
If he takes a step back, in a good way, his young teammates can take a step forward.
It could be fun to see where this Packers team goes with an old QB and a lot of young talent.
As you indicated, Bearmeat, it may not have been what many of us wanted before this season, and it's been an ugly year for the Packers for the most part, but a renewed Rodgers just could make it work out well.
Not probable, but still possible -- so let's hope and pray for a rejuvenated Green Bay.

But this team never gave up. Not only did Lafleur do a good job of holding things together, but Aaron Rodgers had a lot to do with no giving up. Next week we take down the Lions. This was the defense I envisioned at the start of the season. It is unfortunate it took Joe Barry this long to junk his soft zone and let his guys play with some attitude and fire. Hopefully he's learned and turns his guys loose for the rest of the season (however long that is).

I liked the offensive plan for a change - run the damn ball! Leatherhead called it yesterday and the Packers ran it to perfection. Rodgers didn't look too sharp, but he didn't need to be. Good win! Now beat Detroit (which won't be easy as they have the same playoffs spot targeted).

I'm still in disbelief! That was so much fun. Quite honestly, I'm not sure what to make of this.
As AR said at the end of the game, the O was not great but certainly good. Imagine if AR played well!
D & ST - just amazing. But why did they give up that block?

The Lions are playing well and playing for the lives too. At the end of the day, the Vikings were not. So a win next week might be better evidence that the team has turned it around and we have 'a chance'. Can AR return to better form going forward?

So I'm now optimistic but not confident. But it was a hell of a lot better than losing!

Yeah, that was a kicking up and down the field. You could see early on that the defense was playing with a different intensity level, and they choked the Vikings all day. Jefferson, he's shaking his head right now. I don't see how a single player on that Viking team can conclude anything except that the Packers are a lot better than them.

For people who like to rewatch, watch our line just push people out of the way.

I don't think a long TD every couple of years balances out against the turnovers, penalties, and injuries that occur in between those long returns.

It's a loser's bet. You get excited when it pays off, but it's like spending $20 to win a $5 stuffed animal.

From now on, every time the Packers get a penalty, or have a turnover, or get a guy injured on a return, write that down, and then compare it to the next time we get a long TD. That's the cost.

If I am Detroit's DC, knowing I don't have a great defense overall, the first time GB faces a 3rd and 7 or so, I'd have someone jump the slant to Lazard route. If for some reason Lazard isn't on the field, then jump the slant to Doubs route.

I noticed it during this and during previous games and it was reinforced while reading Tony Wilson's piece: Allen Lazard is still the chains-mover. Kind of like me noting years ago that while Jones was the superior back and far more dynamic, Jamaal Williams just converted first downs like crazy.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this first half of Packers football. Kickoff returns and INT returns for TDs; multiple defenders containing Vikings ball carriers and bending them backwards when they tried gaining traction; a host of PDs (actually, 10 for the game--that must be a season high) as a result of excellent coverage; and unleashing A. Jones to slice and dice that sorry Vikings defense up. These were the sort of exciting plays that made the NFL so great in decades past--not inflated QB statistics from generous offensive rules.

I heard a rumor that the Vikings have a player named Jefferson....

Back to that red zone stand after the blocked punt--set the tone for the entire game.

Nixon just had to do a couple zigzags through the middle en route to the end zone; the Packer blockers cleared a fairly easy path for him. How nice was it to see that?!!

At least Rodgers did finally stop those deep attempts to Watson. Pretty throw to Tonyan on the TD. Lazard had a solid all-around game. Fine job by the OL.

The Lions have been our final regular season opponent for 7 of the past 9 years; 2016 was for the division title, this time the last playoff spot.

I am much more enthused than I was before this blowout. This performance was no fluke.

Best game all year.
Defense was awesome! This is what we expected and wanted all year. What is with the comment by the announcers about letting the DB's watch the QB more. Is this another thing the coaches were late changing. Does anyone have more info about that.

Nixon is a beast.

Rodgers wasn't perfect. But the running game did really well and let Rodgers be efficient and score points after turnovers. Rodgers and Watson need more practice. Those long bombs can become touchdowns and become game changers for each game going forward.

One more game to go and make the Lions rebuild for another year.

I'm giddy about the win, but my gut still says this.
Green Bay's defense finally played up to their talent level. But it's still a highly recognizable scheme. Moving 23 to man was good, but still not perfect. When the 2nd team came in, the lack of coaching became way too obvious. The defense is relying on talent, not schemes based on opponent strength and weakness. Joe Barry still has to go.

I am always happy when we not only beat the Vikes but when we crush the Vikes. Now we have only one more big win to seal one of the best comebacks of the last few years. I think and there has been a few negative AR posts already - but the results are the results. Tom Brady is the most fantastic when chips are down player ??? But if a dumb running back for New Orleans had not run out of bounds short of the sticks - NO would have won that game and not given Brady that chance. And if Seattle hadnt passed instead of running in that Superbowl from the 2 yard line - one less Superbowl for Brady. What does that matter??? W's matter. And for today if the offense wasnt the best part - if the defense was - so what Coldworld - AR got the W - he ran it in for a TD ( he was supposed to be immobile) he moved well in the pocket and hit Tonyon. Geeze I dont know what some people want.
Now I have been posting ( and havent changed my mind) I would still hope - and no matter what happens the rest of the year - that AR gets traded. I believe that he would be a better alternative for the Raiders than Brady - because he is younger and his relationship with Davante. And we need to move on - because we need to know about Love and the continuity for him is important - as it was with Rodgers when he took over from #4. But that is a separate issue. Now that we are on this streak - lets go all the way - and one thing that we know from teams who enter the dance - who knows what will happen and how things will work out - last Superbowl we won all the games on the road.

The Good:
1. The most complete win we've seen thus far this season. Offense, defense and special teams all made plays. It was complementary, total football that we've all been dying for.
2. Special teams - despite the blocked punt, the Nixon return for a TD set the tone of the game, Crosby's 56 yard that doinked in!
3. DEFENSE - overall body language and energy was there. They were ready to play. The turnovers, the hard hits, the goal line stand set the tone early, aggressive, in-your-face approach to Jefferson that I'VE BEEN WAITING MONTHS FOR
4. Offensive line - only gave up 1 sack, 0 Tackles For Loss. Za'Darius Smith and Danielle Hunter didn't do shit against Bakhtiari and YOSH NIJMAN (re-sign that man!)
5. Team discipline - aside from Quay Walker's bodyslam, it was a pretty clean game for the most part.
6. Offense - Rodgers finally took what the defense was giving him and also handed the ball off and let Jones and Dillon do their thing. It looked like LaFleur's offense again and not just Rodgers slinging it all over the yard trying to play hero ball.

The Bad:
1. The blocked punt - just irritating this late in the season
2. Devonte Wyatt - only had 1 tackle. I need to see his snap count, but was expecting a lot more after the Miami game and with Dean Lowry going on IR
3. 2nd half soft zone - Packers came out giving Jefferson a large cushion after getting in his face in the 1st half. Why take your foot off the gas, Joe Barry?

The Ugly:
Za'Darius Smith refusing to shake hands with the Packers at the coin toss, and then running off the field and being the first into the tunnel once the game ended. He came across as a whiny, classless low life who's still butthurt the Packers didn't keep him.

ONTO DETROIT!

R,
It happens!

I agree though the Pack has some young talent on the OL. Be curious what they ultimately do with Bachtiari. Every single year I want to draft an OL high but believe the Pack can focus elsewhere this year addressing more pressing needs and wait till middle rounds for an OL, or two.

That 10-defender play (we got a first down on that play, btw - as well we should have) was HILARIOUS. We were all in the bar screaming "THEY'VE ONLY GOT 10 GUYS! SNAP THE BALL!"

I agree with everything you posted in the article. I did not mind Quay Walker getting flagged for unnecessary roughness. It's about time someone played some smash-mouth football, on defense! GO PACK, GO!!!

Love the shopping mall reference on Viqueens home arena. I hate indoors football. Got my game tickets for Lions gave with 10:00 to go in fourth yesterday. Flying out from Washington state for my 2nd game this year & 7th total in Lambeau. Hoping my in stadium record improves to 7-0. GO PACK GO.
