Gut Reactions: Week 6 vs San Diego

Aaron's gut reactions to the Packers win over the Chargers

  • Survive and advance. That's all that matters.
  • I can't remember a team in more need of a bye week than this one.
  • The championship teams of 1996 and 2010 both had to deal with a tough string of injuries. This team will need to do the same.
  • I know everyone is freaking out about the wide receivers "not being open" - I'm sorry, but there's just no way of knowing that until you watch the tape. I saw snippets during replays of some crossing stuff that appeared open, but again, I need to watch the tape. It did seem as though QB1 was looking deep a lot today and was then unable to escape the pocket when things weren't open.
  • Speaking of being unable to escape the pocket - the Chargers did a GREAT job making sure whoever was rushing outside hit a mark and stayed there instead of rushing past the plane the QB was on. The mistake lots of teams make is flying off the edge and giving Rodgers an easy escape lane. There simply weren't any for him today and that's a big testeament to a well-coached Chargers pass rush.
  • That play where Rodgers flipped the ball to Janis for a big gain? That was awesome.
  • Make no mistake, Mike McCoy and Philip Rivers absolutely ate Dom Capers' lunch today. They had a play here or there in the redzone go against them, but man. They were a step ahead nearly the entire game.
  • That said, Capers call on the final defensive play of the game was great as it took away exactly what Rivers wanted over the middle. He came to the outlet late, couldn't step into the throw because Peppers was in his lap and that allowed Randall to drive on the ball just enough.
  • The whole usage of Eddie Lacy and James Starks just completely baffles me.
  • I mean, yes, Eddie needs to hold on the ball. There are no excuses. But you barely use your big back who has traditionally done better the more he's used, then bring him in cold in the 4th quarter and he fumbles. Well, I'm sorry, but it's not a shock.
  • That said - hold on to the damn ball.
  • The play where they lined up Lacy out wide in the red zone and then motioned him into the backfield at the last second for a doomed handoff? Yeah that's officially my least favorite play of the year.
  • Remember that stretch back in 2009 where conventional wisdom held that "Dom can't stop elite quarterbacks"? That's what today reminded me of.
  • Morgan Burnett was missed, but the way this defense looked without BJ Raji was astounding. His absence loomed large, especially early when the defensive line simply couldn't generate any push. Yes, some of that was Rivers getting the ball out of his hands early, but not all of it.
  • QB1's last pass should have been a TD and he knew it. He had Rodgers in the endzone and he just put too much on it.
  • Roll on bye week.
  • Go Pack.

Rivers looked at his receiver all the way yet no Packer DB jumped a route and intercepted let alone bat away a pass , whenever woodhead came in he got the ball yet no Packer DB played him tight . Awful performance by the D regardless of giving up 20points .

Well said Nagler. That bit you said about "elite QBs" is what concerns me too. The pass D has by and large looked GREAT this year. That said, Rivers was the first REAL test of a top quality QB they've faced - and they failed all day long until the last play. And even then, GB was bailed out by SD inexplicably running twice in the final 4 plays when they'd passed the ball all over the lot.

Hope this is something that can be fixed quickly. Peyton doesn't scare me. But there are several QBs left on the schedule (and more than that assuming playoffs) that would have LIT GB UP today.

Rivers was on fire. I was surprised at how good his pass protection was. He just looked to me like he was playing fearlessly, aggressively, all out, with nothing to lose. That approach often seems to lead to the crucial interception, but not today. Give the guy some credit.

It looked so easy at first. The Pack was ahead 17 - 3 and had just recovered a fumble deep. Another score there and the game may have toppled big time for the Pack.

And then the game totally turned on its head. What followed for a little over a quarter of game time was as big a domination as I have ever seen on a football field. One team moved at will up and down the field. And the other team went backwards and never got a first down.

I guess you have to give credit to the Packers for getting it back together and scoring some points to keep the defense finally off the field. The defense was out schemed and executed today but they made a few red zone stops that won the game.

This one was hard to watch at times but 6 - 0 and some time off for all the injured. Go Pack!

I think the game changed when Gordon left the game w/ the injury. At that point, SD basically ignored any effort to run the ball and went to a pass heavy plan and put the ball in Rivers hands. He seemed to be grilled pregame to hit the short/intermediate routes hard and got into a rhythm.

Still have to give the Packers D some credit. Held that offense to 20 pts, which IMO is a very good days work.

Lol, that pic couldn't be more inaccurate.

There's nothing wrong with this defense, but I just can't understand why Rivers was so damn comfortable all game w/3-starting O-Linemen out. It doesn't make sense. Does Raji make THAT much of a difference? If so, PLEEEEASE let him be completely healed for Week 8.

Yes. The Raji push up the middle collapses the pocket from the middle. That forces the QB back, which leaves him exposed to edge rushers. It's a domino effect.

I generally agree, especially about Raji. Dine got no push up the middle today.

I don't feel qualified to judge DB play, especially not knowing what everyone's assignments were, but it really seemed to me like Hyde was constantly in the area when passes were being completed.

I think our oline can - and will - play better than this.

"I generally agree, especially about Raji. Dine got no push up the middle today."

Frustrating the number of times the Packers seemed to be throwing extra rushers at the Chargers, but couldn't get any more than token pressure on Rivers. If I'm an SD fan, I'm very encouraged by the play of that OL today.

The Bye week couldn't have come at a better time for this team. Clearly Cobb, Jones and Lacy are hurting, Adams still hasn't made it back from his ankle injury and now Montgomery is hurt. Hopefully Montgomery's injury won't keep him out long. The offense seemed to really sputter after he left the game.

It was great to see Janis step up and make a couple of big plays when they needed it the most. Hopefully this will be a confidence boost for him.

This team hasn't hit their stride and they're 6-0. SD is a better than their record, man they've had some tough loses. Cobb 2 catches and a horrible drop. The o-line was bad again, the long Starks run was all Starks by reversing field. If Lacy is hurting, why isn't Harris getting any reps?

They are 6-0 and have a lot of room for improvement. That is what excites me.

The offense has come out on fire each game then goes into a lull. They need to find more consistency. Perhaps getting healthy will provide that.

The defense has been great this season, but it too could use some healthy players. Getting Burnett back should help. Raji was a huge loss for tonight's game.

Well I if I ever criticize the Packers play calling again refer me to the Colts call tonight in the fourth. The center snaps to a substitute QB with all their teammates lined up way over to the right. He of course gets smothered for a loss and the Patriots decline the obvious penalty to take over on downs. Weirdest stupidest play I've ever seen.

The Pack won. Can't believe it since the offense sputtered most of the game and the D leaked yards all game long. There is something wrong with this offense that goes further than just WR injuries. Don't know if it's the play calling or execution, but something isn't clicking.

Rivers put a clinic on getting the Bolts into a second and short the majority of the game. A lot of short crossing stuff which GB couldn't stop. Almost no attempt to run in the second half, but that didn't matter, they kept driving with the short passing game.

Don't know what to make of this game, but GB was fortunate to win. Would have been interesting to see if SD would have gone for two at the end.

It's awesome Randall got that great breakup to seal the deal today, but he had one of his shakiest performances today as a CB overall, IMO.

It is convenient to say that missing Raji was the reason our pass rush up the middle was lacking, but if you look at the Rams game, we had consistent pressure on Foles up the gut (and off the edges, for that matter) from all various fronts when blitzing with or without Raji, and continued to get consistent pressure up the middle after he went out with injury. The Chargers handled most of our cross dogs with ease today, but Dom just kept sending them.
All that said, I'll agree we clearly had zero 3 or 4 man presssures, either, so I guess Raji was missed in that respect. Any way you slice it, our entire D at all levels got worked by the Chargers offense. I feel lucky we snuck out of there with a W today... but I'll take it.

The defense had to have been exhausted. Time of possession was 38:00 for the Chargers vs. 22:00 for the Packers. The Chargers ran 89 Plays on offense to the Packers 49. That is a huge difference and tiredness had to have played a factor. It's especially demoralizing when a team goes 9 for 18 converting 3rd downs. That's also a lot of time Aaron Rodgers was not on the field.

Im thrilled the Packers are 6-0, but this team has room for improvement. Also, opponents now have some good film from the rams and chargers games about how to beat the Packers.

Yep, the offense left the defense on the field way too long.

Dom and Mac have taken the strategy of bringing a lot of intensity in Q1 counting that ARod will get them a lead. They have a great record with a lead. I'm not sure if the defense can play at that intensity for four quarters.

For all the angst about the Packers D, and there should be some, Rivers has been having an exceptional year passing the ball. He leads the NFL in passing yards by about 350 yds, so even an average game by him would have meant he was still well ahead of 2nd place Andy Dalton, and that was w/o Gates at TE till last week. Rivers passer rating is 103, so the Packers pass D held him below his average in passer rating.

The guy is just on fire this year and putting up huge numbers.

And the Packers D was w/o Raji, Perry and Burnett. That's 3 quality starters.

My expectations of this game were that the Packers were going to give up a lot of yards but not a lot of points. That definitely held true.

The defense stepped up when it had to. It had to in the Redzone, and at the end of the game.

The 2 players that they really missed were Raji and Perry. Raji provides that push up the middle that makes the QB's uncomfortable. And Perry provides another rusher outside.

The Chargers had a great plan on offense. And Keenan Allen is very impressive.

The more I look at that final play the more I love the play call.

I don't if know Matthews or Peppers played the biggest role.

If Matthews were to rush, there would've been single coverage on Gates and probably would've have cause Rivers to pass even quicker. Rivers holding the ball /hesitating actually helped Randall.

If Peppers didn't quickly beat the RT and force a throw Rivers could have decided to go through his progressions and target Sam Shields, who was one on one...

Peppers was huge on that play. He didn't allow Rivers to step into his throw as much as he needed to, to make a stronger throw.

But what a play by Randall on that one. That was a hell of a play for the Rookie.

Back to back weeks our Rookie CB's sealed victory's for this team. Great drafting by Thompson.

- Janis down field blocking is gonna score that guy some more playing time
- I love redemption plays. Haha gets a late hit flag.....and then causes a fumble.
- Ummm.....we ran the ball 15 times? And they never stopped it. Hmmm. Perhaps what's wrong with our offense is.......we stop taking what they give us. Keep running Starks. We had a lead most of the game. He averaged 10 yards per carry.
- Maybe the announcers could come on to this website and mention back shoulder throws a few more times

I don't know about more Janis PT unless both Montgomery and Adams miss more time due to injuries.

Clearly #12 doesn't like Janis for whatever reason. When asked about Janis getting more PT all he could talk about was getting quick twitch All Pro Adams back.

I just get the feeling there's more to Rodgers dislike of Janis than just trust issues. Doesn't even refer to him by name. Something is going on behind the scenes.

Janis saved Rodgers' ass on that flip pass for a big gain and he caught a nice deep ball near the sidelines. Janis' ability to get downfield defending returns will get him more playing time on ST. As far as WR playing time, Adams and Montgomery will be ahead of him. I have to agree with Mojo on the relationship between Rodgers and Janis. I get the feeling that Rodgers just doesn't like him. On another note, it was great seeing Abbrederis on the field.

Mojo,
I don't think Janis will get more playing time at the expense of the other healthy starters. But the Packers get their wide receivers more exposure by rotating them in. I'm not one of these Janis lovers, but the guy can spread the field with his speed. More in-game experience is going to help this team. He blocked well, and contributed some huge plays. What more can you ask from a guy with a few starts at WR?

As far as the relationship with Rodgers, there has always been a prove yourself mentality that Rodgers has with most of the new guys. This isn't new. I forget the article recently, but apparently Rodgers studies film on the guys on the practice squad and has direct influence on who they "bring up".

Janis had 3 big plays in the game. His 2 catches for 79 yards. Let that sink in for a bit, 2 catches both over 30 yards. We all knew he could and would be a big play guy, hopefully moving forward they will start to trust him enough to get him some plays.

But his biggest play in the game could very well be his blocking downfield on the big run by Starks. If he doesn't get that block, Starks doesn't score. Big time play by Janis.

And speaking of Starks, I don't know why he didn't get more carries. He had 10 carries for 112 yards. I think the biggest mistake the offense did was not run the ball more with Starks. He was clearly the hot player.

GB did have 13 QB hits and 3 sacks, albeit on 65 pass attempts (20% QB hit percentage). Still, a lot of those pass attempts came out really fast. Just watching the game in real time once, I'd say GB generally got good pressure on the longer developing pass plays.

It is true that one can't tell whether the WRs are open w/o looking at some tape. That said, Aaron Rodgers completed 19 passes, had 13 incomplete, for 55%. Rodgers was only hit 5 times, including 3 sacks (17.4 QB hit %). Most of the hits came after he had decent time to throw the ball, imo. So...I suppose the WRs aren't getting open, or they are getting open but not in sync with the QB getting set and having a throwing lane, or A. Rodgers isn't seeing them, or he's ignoring open receivers while waiting to see if a longer developing route opens up, or....

There are several relatively new guys out there at receiver. It may take a few weeks for everyone to be where AR wants them. Unfortunately Starks is not the greatest check down receiver (interesting because he's made some excellent down the field catches).

SCREEN PASS

So many of our offensive woes could be solved by bringing back the Screen Pass. Whether its to Janis, Starks, or Cobb it doesn't matter.

The redzone incompletions at the end of the 4th quarter by Rodgers should of been short passes to Kuhn, or take the sack to run off time, when in short FG range.

#12's demand for mental perfection is fine, but it has led him to spats in the past - e.g. Finley. And we saw some fallout with GJ and DD after they left (although if memory serves the DD thing was an assumption I made about the identity of an anonymous source based on timing). Maybe he needs to take his leadership style to the next level. Be demanding, but find a way to do it without creating drama publicly or privately. How about, "He did some good things today."

If this defense can't get home without Raji then that may be why TT is hesitant to give Daniels $10M a year. He's gonna need a little jack for Raji too.

Aaron Rodgers can be petulant. He goes bananas when someone first meets him in person and says, "I thought you were taller". I am 5' 6'' and got over being short as a teenager - I'm 68.

We all have quirks but it may be a good idea for Rodgers to get some help in dealing with people. I see him as the type to carry a grudge. Against opponents - great, but deadly if it is against team mates.

Just hope I am wrong in all this, but others mention it and apparently see it so I thought I would offer my 2 cents,

No no. His drive, determination and quest for perfection are what makes him so good at what he does. He still carries a grudge that the 49ers didn't draft him, he still holds a grudge that he sat for 3 years waiting to play. These things drive him to improve. If the bad part of this is that he expects those around him to also strive for perfection as much as he does ... well that's only good for the team.

I have never heard of any problems with anyone. James Jones was thrilled to return to play with Rodgers. If there are any problems with players - they are with the ones who are not prepared and not where they are supposed to be. So again that's only a good thing that he get's on their cases about that.

"#12's demand for mental perfection is fine."

That demand for mental perfection is what makes him GREAT and allows him to help make WR better. All the Great QB's share that trait. Manning was legendary for it, as I'm sure Brady is too.

Without that mental demanding he isn't the great QB he is. You can't remove it from the equation w/o changing who Rodgers is and why he is great.

I've read plenty of Rodgers saying "He's doing some good things" kinda quotes from Rodgers regarding Janis.

Jennings was far more diva than Rodgers is. He had his chance to stay in GB w/ the best QB on the planet but took the cash grab. Anything he said about Rodgers was sour grapes. Same w/ DD since he wanted to be allowed a roster spot seemingly in perpetuity.

Rodgers doesn't create the drama, others do when they leave. Probably because they knew how good they had it in GB. Bad feeling were about being asked to leave toward the organization, not Rodgers. He just became the focal point, since he is the most public/recognizable face in GB.

Loved 21s forced fumble....dude is scary. Good to see Janis finally make some plays. I thought palmer played pretty good. Montgomery is so good hated to see him go down. Other than that not a ton of positives to take away except it was a dog fight and we came out on top. Oh yeah starks run was awesome too. We need this bye pretty bad. Battle of the beatable unbeatens in 2 weeks ...go pack!

Rivers was letting loose of the ball in less than 2.0 seconds. No amount of pass rush is getting to him in that short of time.

Green Bay had two rookies playing in the defensive backfield most of the game.

Those are the facts. My opinion is Green Bay didn't clog or jump those short routes like teams have done to them over the last few games. Not sure if maybe the rookies had adjustment issues in jumping those short routes.

Why didn't the Pack go after those short routes after seeing the mid to long routes were covered? Don't know about that one. Also they should pounded the run game with Starks. Lacy should have been rested to heal that ankle.

They won and that's what matters. MM will make sure some adjustments happen for the future and frankly......if I were Denver I wouldn't want to face the Pack after the bye.

Even totally free runners could not get to Rivers before the throw was being released. The issue was that the receivers were so constantly available for these quick throws. Good take.

Yeah when a guy has 10 carries for over 110 yards, you wonder why he only had 10 carries.

Shields was being eaten for Lunch all day, thank god he wasn't on Woodhead on the final play. Some weeks teams can't complete a pass on Shields and then he has a game like this. The defense was completely gassed out there today, 32 first downs by the Chargers? Now for 2 weeks we'll have to hear those idiots on NFL Network and ESPN talk about the Packers defense.
I think the Packers had Montgomery as a huge part of the offense this week and when he went down they were pretty screwed. They HAVE to get healthy during Bye Week, Rodgers simply doesn't have a healthy WR to throw to. If I was TT I might consider a trade for someone, anyone who can get off the LOS, this wasn't a great defense by any means. But then again I thought TT should have taken Malcom Brown instead of Randell. I love this kid Randell!!!

'I think the Packers had Montgomery as a huge part of the offense this week and when he went down they were pretty screwed.'

Yeah, i agree. I thought when Montgomery got hurt is when the offense really fell apart.

I don't see them trading for anyone or even signing anyone. Honestly the offense just needs to take advantage of the players it has. It needs to adjust what its doing to accommodate the players better. And Rodgers has to start trusting the players he has on the field and stop worrying about when he gets players back. Obviously the team would be better with Nelson and Adams on the field. But he needs to stop worrying about when they get back and work with the players that are on the field. Janis made 2 huge catches in the game. Earlier in the game, he nearly took another sack versus throwing a pass to Janis. Which could have been a 2-5+ yard gain.

I agree, I don't see them doing it either, just hoping out loud. BUT, if Adams can come back in week 8 and Montgomery can come back sometime soon, they'll be okay I think. Janis made some nice plays today, like to see him on some short crossing routes or bubble screens. Just get the ball in his hands because the kid is fast! The play he made you're talking about RC was beautiful. Really hoping Monty can get healthy quick, I love that kid and thought he was a steal when TT drafted him.

Yeah, I think they will be ok once they get everyone back healthy. That also includes Cobb and James Jones who are also playing hurt.

I am hoping Montgomery's injury won't keep him out a long time. I was excited when they drafted him and he was really proving to be a great fit in their offense.

Yeah, one thing from Rodgers post game press conference, is he said they need to find ways to get these guys the ball in their hands in space. Janis is definitely a guy they need to find ways to do so.
Even if Janis only gets the ball 2 plays a game, he now has shown he can turn those 2 plays into 2 huge plays.

People keep commenting on the trust thing with Janis. I have to believe that practice saw a lot more time with Monty running plays. The injury caused a lot of matchup changes in the game plan. It's like that one game against cincy when Finley went down and then our game plan sucked the rest of the game. But back to Janis, more practice time and being part of an actual game plan with Rodgers will equal more connections between these two.

yeah, when they lost Montgomery it reminded me of when they lost Finley and the offense couldn't adapt. That's what it felt like to me too.

Rivers got the ball out quick. Period. I am going to re-watch the game tonight. I was to deep in my feelings to really get a good look at was going on.

The whole secondary was abused till we got in the red zone and the open man was less visible.

Just an embarrassing day on defense. "Bend don't break" has always been our motto but it is worrisome.

The good news for everyone here:

We won't face another elite QB of River's quality the rest of the season. Unless Romo is 100%. And Carson Palmer....good...but not as good as Rivers at those quick release passes, so our pass rush should get home.
(Please don't mention Manning as elite at this point - their D will give us fits, but not QB play)

And then.....playoffs? No big QB threats in the NFC...... Unless Romo.

So....that leaves the Superbowl. If we make it that far. Potentially a Brady or a Luck or a Big Ben. And hopefully we'll be healthier and Rookies will be veterans at that point. Other than those few, none of the others scare me.

Question- Why give 10yd cushion to WR if they are throwing everything under 10 yds? What happened to jamming the WR on the line and getting him off his route?

Packers had no answer for Rivers. I think they should have dropped the LBs into coverage more often rather than blitzing when it became obvious that Rivers was beating the blitz all day. Also, Dix was a total mess on that 3rd and 17 play that went for 50 yards. Burnett and Raji were missed badly today. On offense I think that the Packers had planned to rest Lacy for this game. Then when the Chargers stayed close and tied the game they brought Lacy in but he was cold and ineffective. Fortunately Lang recovered his fumble. My positive take away from this game is that both the Packers offense and defense stepped up when the game was tied and they put up another 10 points and made defensive stops in the 4th quarter, including the final goal line stand. How the Packers played in the 4th quarter of this game showed me a lot about the character of this team. In recent seasons the defense would have folded up in the 4th quarter but not this season, at least not yet. Considering all the injuries this was a good hard fought win. 6-0, get healthy and Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Capers mode of operation unlike any other of ther 31 other teams is rush as many guys as you can to get to the QB and don't worry, they won't be able to throw the ball. Ya that hasn't worked in three years. He is the worst O coordinator in football.
I too agree, drop those linebackers in coverage to help out on the short dink passes and rush 4. It was way way too easy to just make 8 yard passes all day long without being touched except on a couple of plays. He threw 60 times and we had like one sack. That means 59 times we did the same stupid thing over and over again.

First off , Capers is a D coordinator, also the Packers should of had 2 ints. Capers doesn't catch the ball. They had 3 sacks late, and pressure on the last play. The defense was on the field for 2/3 of the game. If the offense puts more points on the board it takes away a lot of the short passing game. The turning point was after the Gordon fumble and the Packers went backwards and PUNTED! IMO

The Packers' problems start and end with the reduction in receiving potency. Even the vaunted 1996 Packers struggled for roughly a four game stretch when Brooks, Freeman, and Chmura were all gone. They nearly went 1-3 until the defense reared up in the second half against a Tony Banks led Rams team. And they didn't lose another game after Freeman and Chmura came back. If the Packers had a reasonably healthy Cobb, Adams, Montgomery, and Lacy the offense would control the games more, and the D would be in a better position to do what it does. So here's hoping to gaining some health the second half of the season.

I think Rodgers favorite play is using Lacy as a decoy. He tends to throw the opposite way of him. Aaron made a great point, Eddie needs to get warmed up. Here's to hoping everyone gets healthy and the weapons are locked and loaded.

Who's been feeding Lacy? My God, I swear my eyes were going after 70 years. Then I got a good look and this guy is absolutely huge. Not the muscular ready to pound it huge either.
He is so out of shape he can't play.
MM can't keep saying he is nursing and ankle, he eating Buffalo wings and pizza or something.

DOOM AND GLOOM! DOOM AND GLOOM!!

No, seriously now, we should all be quite happy with our packers. Rivers just had a "madden set on easy difficulty" kind of day against our defense and our packers still won. Think about that: our team won despite a career day by an opposing quarterback. This year's packers are finding ways to win each week while still trying to figure out the team's identity. I am stoked for our trip to Denver.
