Harris, Manuel, Headline Familiar Faces who Should fill Packers' DB Coach Vacancy
The search for Jerry Gray's successor should start and end with two former Packers.
By JosephR
As of yesterday, the Packers are short a full coaching staff with the loss of Jerry Gray to the Falcons; with the possibility of more holes opening up as the 2022 season comes to a close (PLEASE STAY Rich Bisaccia!!!!). At first, I was taken by surprise by the move, but then I remembered who our head coach was. My guess is as good as yours that Head Coach Matt LaFleur made no attempt to retain Gray, and will opt to sign "his" defensive backs coach as he continues to impose his vision for the Packers' future. I've scoured LaFleur's Rolodex, and I struggled to find a buffet of quality candidates for the job. It was at that very moment, that I actually got excited. This next coaching hire might be the result of an extensive search for a coach that has a resume that will hold up under the pressure of both the team's and the fans' lofty ambitions. Given the success of the Packers' secondary in recent years, the reins shouldn't just be handed over to just anybody, the ideal candidate should have a long list of experience(7-10+ years coaching), success at preferably more than one organization (or sustained success if only one team), and it'd be ideal if they were a former player. A notable up-and-comer wouldn't be a bad choice either, but they would have to give the impression that they are on par with a more senior coach, if not notably better. In my eyes, as your resident Armchair GM, that narrows down the search quite a bit. While this list tried to take some influence from one Matthew Patrick LaFleur, I fully expect him to exact a loud and profane "C'MON MAN!!!!" reaction with the announcement of the eventual hire.
UPDATE - Jerry Gray was named the Assistant Head Coach/Defense of the Falcons today; a definite promotion from his former position as DB Coach/Passing Game Coordinator for the Packers.
Al Harris, DB Coach - Cowboys
I've been silently panhandling for Harris to come home for years; this could be the year it finally comes to fruition. Cowboys DC Dan Quinn has been making his rounds for HC vacancies, and it's possible that he either takes Harris with him or the prospective new Cowboys DC brings his own and leaves Al looking for a new team. Harris has been coaching for 9 years, starting out as an intern with the Dolphins under another familiar face, Joe Philbin in 2012. He took that success and landed a job as the Chiefs' DB coach from 2013-2018. The Chiefs secondary finished Top-10 in the league in interceptions in all but 1 of his 6 seasons leading the unit. With that being said, I credit Harris with the sensational season that Trevon Diggs had in 2021, leading the NFL with 11 interceptions after leading the team his rookie year with only 3. The Cowboys had another Top-5 unit this year in 2022. If I had it my way, I would hire Harris as DB Coach and groom him for an eventual DC position after we take out the trash....ahem, I mean after Joe Barry and the Packers part ways. Harris checks all the boxes after a 15-year NFL career(Harris was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 2020), multiple Pro Bowls, and transforming secondaries wherever he goes.
Marquand Manuel, DB Coach - Jets
Manuel may not be as familiar to the Packers' faithful, as he only played for the Packers one year; back in 2006. Manuel doesn't come with the same prestige as his former Green Bay teammate as Harris, but he has enjoyed success at multiple stops in the NFL. After a 7 year career that included leading the Seahawks to a Super Bowl before coming up short to the likes of Jerome Bettis and the Steelers, Manuel went on to become an assistant for Seattle in 2012, working his way up to Asst DB Coach under Pete Carroll. Manuel leveraged his success and went over to coach the Falcons in 2015; first as a DB coach but eventually promoted to Defensive Coordinator in 2017. During that time, he probably made friends with an up-and-coming QB Coach, Matt LaFleur. This was a rocky stop for Manuel, as the Falcons struggled to put together winning seasons under Dan Quinn, and for 2019, Manuel was out of coaching before resurfacing with the Eagles in 2020. I won't put it all on Manuel though, because in his first year as DC the Falcons were 9th in total defense before the bottom fell out in 2018. He found success in Philadelphia though and has reunited with another old friend from Seattle, Robert Saleh who now is the Head Coach of the Jets. I don't think Manuel has the chops as a DC in waiting, but the experience in itself shouldn't be discounted. His niche in the league could be as a DB Coach. I just don't know if Saleh will allow his friend LaFleur to interview him unless he has a ready replacement already on the coaching staff. But as a former player in the league with some healthy experience in the league, he still headlines my list of candidates.
Chris Harris, DB Coach - Commanders
Depending on your football knowledge outside of Lambeau, Harris is another familiar face. Harris was a CB for the Bears from 2005-2006, and 2010-2011, where he made 2nd Team All-Pro. After retirement, Harris started as an assistant and then S Coach with the Bears from 2013-2014 before landing a similar gig with the Chargers from 2016-2019; culminating in a unit that was the 5th-ranked passing defense. Under his current stint with the Commanders, Harris has helped produce two Top-5 teams in passing defense as well as two Top-10 units for interceptions. I want to emphasize the interceptions part because we all know the monster defensive front that Washington has, but at the end of the day when the ball is thrown, pressure or not, your DBs gotta challenge for the ball. Harris for me presents as an up-and-comer who I think could bolt for a team with more stability than the current Ron Rivera administration. Harris has had similar talent available to him during his Chargers days, so I don't think the spotlight is too bright for him here in Green Bay.
Dino Vasso, CB Coach - Texans
Coach Vasso is another up-and-comer, who may find himself on the outside looking in as DeMeco Ryans looks to most likely take the reins in Houston next season. Dino has 9 years of NFL experience, with his crowning achievement a Super Bowl ring with the Eagles in 2017, where he served as the assistant DB coach. Under Doug Pederson he eventually worked his way up to Asst DC(Marquand Manuel was his DB Coach), which is something of note. Unfortunately, once Nick Sirianni came in and cleaned house, Dino found himself on the outs and landed with the Texans as the CB coach. Vasso also previously worked with Al Harris with the Chiefs, and I want to give him credit for the success of that unit as well. Dino Vasso is probably the lowest-hanging high-quality fruit the Packers could reach for and get without too much fuss if they negotiate just right, as I'm sure anyone inside the Texans building is wondering what is to come when/if DeMeco Ryans closes out his tenure with the 49ers.
UPDATE - DeMeco Ryans and the Texans have agreed in principle to a deal for him to be the next Head Coach.
Brandon Lynch, Asst DB Coach - Browns
Lynch is the greenest talent to close out this list, but he intrigues me as a former player and Super Bowl winner with the Colts in 2006. Since joining the Browns in 2020, Lynch has helped produce two Top-5 units in passing defense. Like the aforementioned Texans, the Browns present some instability in the coaching ranks, and Lynch could be an easy target to poach. I like the promise of a former player who's won a championship, and although he's short on experience, the promise of such a young candidate is occasionally hard to ignore. In a league where cronyism is almost nearly encouraged, it'd be a breath of fresh air to see a young coach get an opportunity to coach for what should still be a contender next year in the Packers.
It's only been a day since Jerry Gray signed with the Falcons, and if we don't hear of an immediate promotion or shuffling of duties in the next 48 hours, I expect a coaching search. Again, I do believe we have reason to hope for a solid coaching search, but who knows what LaFleur is actually thinking or leaning towards. I will say it should be interesting to watch to see who he actually brings in if any. I look forward to your reactions folks as we continue to "enjoy" this uncharacteristic offseason.

I'm sure the Good 'Ole Boy network will be in full swing when this hires is finally announced. I assume MaLF will do the hiring, but the sad part is I am sure Joe D. Barry will be a voice in the room. How could he not be in on the decision?
I don't think Joe D. Barry should have any say about anything, but if MaLF is going to retain him as DC, he'd have to approve the hire right?
SMH... Still holding out hope MaLF fires Barry, but it's not looking good right now.

To my knowledge, Joe Barry has never hired anyone, and it would be scary to me if MLF allowed him to do so at this time. Since MLF is essentially protecting Barry, he could play it that way strategically, so if the pass defense falters he could make Barry a scapegoat. But if MLF makes the hire (as he should), he's going to take the heat and most likely be forced to fire Barry along with the DB Coach hire if he fails. Either way, it looks good for the fans; I'm just disappointed we'll have to waste another year on Joe Barry.

I don't expect Barry to do the hiring, but if he's going to be on his staff, he would likely want to at least agree with the hire, you'd think.
I can't believe someone close to MaLF hasn't said, you need to fire that dude Barry immediately, or this could be your final year as an NFL HC...
I guess he thinks changing from Pettine to Barry to another DC would look worse than sticking with a guy he knows? Maybe, IDK, guys don't want to be DC under MaLF? Maybe MaLF has called every guy he knows and can't get anyone who wants to take JDB's place?
That doesn't seem right either. IDK what the answers are or should be, but Joe Barry's weak a$$ zone isn't the answer either. I do feel if MaLF keeps Joe Barry this offseason, we may be seeing the last of both of them.

I couldn't think of a single defensive coordinator who wouldn't mind coaching in Green Bay knowing they have Aaron Rodgers to bail them out, a Top-5 CB and DL in the league, and plenty of young talent to build around. It would purely have to be an issue of either compensation, or them disliking Green Bay geographically.
This really is a miniature moment for LaFleur to prove he truly is a head coach and not just some "super coordinator". If he defaults to his buddies he has only himself to blame.

Al Harris might be a perfect hire for LaFleur. Harris knows this team inside & out. Those guys all stay connected- Al undoubtedly aligned with Woodson, et al.

I agree, Harris does know our team and looks like he has had a good career as a DB coach. Wood was a good on field teacher / coach, Harris was one of his students. Seams like a low-risk venture to me

Harris hasn't played for Green Bay in 12 years. How much is still the same today? What evidence is there for the claim that "all these guys stay connected?" Stay connected to whom? Stay connected to the head coach who wasn't here 12 years ago? All of the new players who weren't here 12 years ago? The GM who wasn't here 12 years ago? What actual evidence is there that "he knows this team inside and out?"

I have friends who played in and won it all in Super Bowl XXXI and XLV. Sorry.

OK. How does this prove anything?

January 31, 2023 at 04:37 pm
Jim Leonhard. Matt LF thought he was good enough to run the whole defense. His many years of pro experience with Rex/Buddy Ryan's defense and his work at Wisconsin says enough.
Why would Al Harris come to Green Bay?
For that matter, why would any coach still employed move laterally to Green Bay?
JosephR
January 31, 2023 at 04:42 pm
Coaches make lateral moves all the time, especially if they see an opportunity to gain prestige or move up the coaching ladder. If Dan Quinn leaves Dallas, Harris could elect to stay with McCarthy, or follow Quinn if he thinks it's the better option. But again if the new Dallas DC prefers someone else over Harris and he doesn't want to follow Quinn, that leaves an opening for Green Bay.
Players/coaches talk just like fans, and they know infinitely more than we do about what goes on behind those closed doors. I'm sure an ambitious position coach would be interested in the job if they feel they can leverage their success into being the eventual Packers DC once Joe Barry is shown the door. They just would have to be patient. I personally don't see Joe Barry coaching for the Packers in 2024, by my projection he'll most likely lose the locker room this season.

Good points but having the lifestyle of Dallas, for instance, is probably superior to living in....Green Bay. If the money is the same, the opportunity is the same...you'd move your family to....Green Bay?

Al Harris spoke highly of Green Bay, both during his retirement and when he was inducted into the Packers HoF. For a former player who considers himself a Packer for life, why not move to Green Bay? He's lived here for 7 years already before.

I thought Quinn was staying with Dallas. Harris could move into Lambeau as an Asst. Defensive Coordinator to gain leverage, but he probably stays where he is. Manuel probably wants to be a DC down the road.

Gray probably parted ways with the Packers because he didn't like the soft coverage that Barry favored. The real question is whether any top DB coach would want to join Barry's staff, knowing they'd be expected to implement a system the DB's and their coach think is BS. So, get ready for another sub-par coach who will be unqualified, not respected by the players, but willing to go along to get a paycheck.

I agree with what you are saying. The only hope is that MaLF talks with Barry like he did mid-season, after that talk we started playing more press with cover 2 over. This is what our DBs like, do so well and the defense kept us in many of those last 5 games. We can only hope

That's terribly pessimistic....Somebody qualified wants this job, and it's up to MLF to find him and make sure Barry makes it work.
Gray could have also left either because he saw no way forward with the Packers' organization, and/or he saw a better opportunity with Arthur Smith, whom he worked with a long time ago on the Redskins' staff (2008). The Falcons are probably starting fresh on defense, having lost their previous DC to retirement.

It will be Aubrey Pleasant, an assistant already on staff but off field. Fired from the lions and worked with MLF with the Rams. A lazy hire like the Drayton promotion to special teams. Promotion due to a comfortable familiarity.

Thanks for the article, but I always take this sort of thing with a mid-sized truckload of salt. I just don't think that many of us - if any of us - are qualified to judge rather obscure coaching candidates. What do we actually know about these people? Have we spoken to any of them even once? Do we know how they conduct themselves in the meeting room or on the practice field? And why do people seem so swayed toward the "hometown guy" who played for the Packers (or even for the Badgers)?
Yeah, we can say "players seem to like him" or "his units seem to have performed well" in the past. That's what the Broncos said about Nathanael Hackett, and now they just gave up a 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder to hire Sean Payton. (And never mind how much money they still owe to Hackett).
OK. Speculation - even wild speculation - can be fun. But I'll wait and see what actually happens.
PS - "Silently pandering for Harris to come"? Might want to check the dictionary on that one...

I appreciate the revision. This article was done in the middle of the night(I'm currently 8 hours ahead of Green Bay time), my mind wanted "panhandling" and somehow that came out pandering. I'm surprised my editor didn't catch that.

To answer your concerns, Harris has been around "Packers People" his entire coaching career: Joe Philbin, Andy Reid, and now Mike McCarthy; I doubt players temperaments change when then ascend from playing to coaching.
Manuel has familiarity with both LaFleur and Saleh who are best friends as a coaches. If anyone knows how they are on and off the field it would be them. But just like when Shanahan blocked Matt from hiring his brother Mike, Saleh could do the same.
Only Chris Harris, Vasso, and Lynch would be completely unknown to the current Green Bay coaching staff, but Lynch coaches with former Packers QB Coach Alex Van Pelt and Manuel coached under Vasso for Philadelphia.
marpag1
February 01, 2023 at 02:16 am
Actually, this doesn't really answer my concerns.
The Packers ran "Packer person" Mike McCarthy out of town, largely because they felt his offense was outdated and his defense always sucked. But the Packers will hire Al Harris because he has been around McCarthy?
Andy Reid has been out of Green Bay for A QUARTER OF A CENTURY. Not sure if that really puts him solidly as "Packer people" after a 25 year absence. But even if Reid is "Packer people," didn't Andy Reid FIRE Al Harris at the end of the 2018 season?
I'm not sure if "they are well acquainted" has much to do with "they are well respected" or "they are likely to be hired." First, I don't think that Harris and Manuel are the only people that the current brain trust has become familiar with. They probably know some other people too, right? Why should MLF favor the people who had at some point been connected to "Packer people?"
And why does familiarity imply respect? Maybe you are very familiar with all of your coworkers. Does that really mean that you think they are good coworkers?
Jerry Gray was very well familiar with Joe Barry and other "Packer people," and in spite of that he thought that it was time to get the heck out of Dodge and bolt to Atlanta.
Maybe coaches don't care about "Packer people" as much as we think they do.
JosephR
February 01, 2023 at 02:52 am
When I say "Packers People", I'm referring to character, guys who not only fit in a locker room, but standout. It's true, you can be liked but not respected, and vice versa. Al Harris and Marquand Manuel don't have that issue. Chris Harris, Vasso, and Lynch are probably more on the "liked" side of the house right now, which is why I noted them as "up-and-comers". I would say in another 2-3 seasons Vasso starts to catch fire if his success continues on his next stop; the other two need a chance to be the main DB Coach and then sustain their success. Either way, so far they have all shown to be pretty good at their jobs.
Al Harris wasn't fired by Andy Reid. Andy Reid fired then DC Bob Sutton and hired Steve Spagnuolo for having a lackluster season. Spagnuolo brought on Sam Madison, another former CB who had a career very similar to Harris. Madison is a good coach in his own right, but he has yet to get the Chiefs unit to reach the level it was under Harris.
Al Harris will NEVER be without a laundry list of suitors in the league. He is very well respected amongst coaches and current/former players. Outside of Aaron Glenn who's already risen to DC for the Lions(he was available when LaFleur hired Barry), Al Harris is THE press man coach in the NFL right now. Calvin Johnson was quoted to say he was the toughest CB he's ever faced; wouldn't you want THAT guy coaching your secondary?
You're more than welcome to be skeptical of my article, I welcome it actually. However we know the NFL is a "good ol boys" club in more ways than one, and we have a HC who is known to stick with people he has familiarity with since he is still really in the genesis of his HC career. Could he hire someone out in left field? Sure. But I'd be surprised if he did. I'm not saying it has to be anyone on this list, but I'd be surprised if MLF went with a total stranger.

Thanks Joseph. I really enjoy it when you authors keep involved with the commentary. It seems to tell us that you mean what you say and are concerned about how we feel about your article.
Admire that you take harsh comments respectfully too. I think most criticisms come out sounding worse than were meant (at least I hope).
Makes it worth reading through the whole thing even though I didn't feel qualified to comment on a DB coaching hire myself. I can only root for toughness.

Joseph, good article and I don't respond to fluff either.
Frankly, I want to see a serious DB coach come to Green Bay. Yet, somehow this issue goes to my mental decision thought area where I wonder if it makes any difference who they hire if the DC stays with his old concepts.
Two years ago...good, last year not good. The big question is why? MLF needs to respond to that since he is the HC.
