Have We Forgotten About Lucas Havrisik?

The franchise record-breaking kicker is still competing.

There was one constant complaint coming from Packers fans after the 2025 season came to an abrupt end in Chicago: "Why is Brandon McManus still on the team?" After a poor performance in the playoff game against the Bears, there was a very slim margin of fans who didn't want the kicker's head on a platter. Even though it came later than they had hoped, McManus was finally released this past Friday, much to the delight of a large percentage of the green and gold faithful.

This release likely came as a direct result of the drafting of kicker Trey Smack of Florida about two weeks earlier. Smack was reportedly impressive in rookie camp following the draft, and that was apparently all the Packers needed to deliver the pink slip to the veteran, McManus.

It was at that point that, despite the fact that many wanted McManus gone before the Packers even had a chance at drafting Smack, many couldn't believe the team wasn't having McManus at least compete with Smack in training camp. All at once came the comments that "apparently the Packers aren't giving Smack any competition," and that was labeled as a bad idea.

But wait a second, do they not realize the Packers still have another kicker on the roster? Did they forget about Lucas Havrisik?

That's right, we're talking about THAT Lucas Havrisik. You know, the kicker who holds the record for the longest field goal kick in franchise history. The one who drilled a 61-yard field goal against the Arizona Cardinals on October 19, 2025, when Brandon McManus was out with an injury. Apparently, many in the Packers media realm have forgotten that Havrisik is still on the roster. And honestly, I did too.

While McManus dealt with a quad injury last season, Lucas Havrisik took over for three games and wasn't too terrible. He went 4/4 for field goals with a long of that record-breaking 61-yarder, but went 7/9 in extra points, missing two in his final start, with one terrible blooper of a wide-left point-after in New York. At one point, some Packers fans didn't care if Brandon McManus ever came back. That's how good Havrisik was initially.

After McManus returned, Havrisik was released by the Packers, only to return to the practice squad. At the end of the season, Havrisik signed a futures deal with the team and remains on the roster.

Does Havrisik have a shot at winning the job?

When you go into training camp with two kickers, obviously, there's a sense that there's going to be a kicking competition. The legitimacy of that competition, though, likely can be called into question. Throughout Mason Crosby's long and successful Packers career, there were a few kickers brought in to training camp that likely never had a shot at actually winning the job. They were just there to light a competitive fire underneath Crosby in hopes that he'll have a much better season than the one that came before.

That is likely what can be guessed for Lucas Havrisik entering training camp behind Trey Smack. The Packers wouldn't have traded up in the 6th round to draft Smack if the chances of Havrisik taking over kicking duties were anything above unlikely. The intention as of this time is likely to use Havrisik to light a competitive fire under Trey Smack, so they get the best they can out of the rookie heading into the new season.

What's in it for Havrisik then? While the knowledge that he is unlikely to win the kicking competition unless Trey Smack completely nose-dives is likely a little deflating, Havrisik will know that any team with possible questions at kicker will be keeping eyes on his status. Should he provide Trey Smack with a good competition, a kicker-needy team may be willing to offer a late-round draft pick to secure his services, or will be waiting to claim him off the waiver wire just before the season starts. And if not, the Packers may still keep him on the practice squad in case Smack struggles.

While some are right that Trey Smack isn't quite receiving the level of competition they thought he would in training camp, he's not facing just himself. Lucas Havrisik will be right behind him to remind him that in the NFL, there's always someone waiting to take your job.

Could this be the modern day equivalent of Conway vs Longwell?

Exactly. Strange things happen with "sure thing" kickers. Just look at those drafted high over the last 20 years. I would not have cut McManus unless they feared his leg injuries could be recurring. Havrisik unlikely to be another Ryan Longwell, but at least they have a backup on the roster, and I wouldn't be surprised if they kept him on the gameday in case Smack blows some of his initial pressure kicks.

There are not enough spots on the gameday roster to have two kickers. They might keep both on the initial 53 if both look good in preseason.

They should have stuck with Havrisik last year after McMannus got hurt. They could have kept McMannus on IR. But once again Gute stuck with a player too long.

No. I think his presence gave the Packers the confidence to release McManus after drafting Smack. Havrisik provides a comparable floor and will likely only benefit from the increased reps this summer now. Unlike McManus, he is likely to be able to be retained on the PS and provides a similar floor should Smack struggle or have an injury. Smack probably started anyway, arguably the release benefits Havrisik as a kicker more potentially.

More like McManus gave the Packers the confidence to release McManus.

I haven't forgotten Havrisik, nor have I forgotten that the game in which he missed two extra points was played in very windy conditions. I did not get to see that game, but I think it's likely that the wind affected the snaps and the holds as well as the trajectory of the ball after he kicked it. I don't think it's at all out of the question that Havrisik wins the kicking job. I'm hoping he at least makes it interesting, although if it's a tie, Trey Smack will get the job based on greater upside.

If their agents are worth their weight in salt they will have drilled in the head of both Smack and Havrisik that you are in competition with not just the people in camp but every other competition out there. Don't think they won't bring in a guy who balled out somewhere else but didn't surplant an established kicker and you want your agent to be able to shop you around if you get beat out in a close competition.

Would be nice if we could keep both, with one on the PS.

Yes it would be but it will be unlikely if both have a good preseason because you will have to release one to bring them back on the PS.

I have to say that I like most of this years draft choices....for once Gute actually drafted for need instead of RAS & thinking that he is going to pull a rabbit out of his proverbial hat! As far as drafting Smack....I like the draft choice, however he is a rookie & it is a crap shoot (anyone remember Carlson?) & will probably go through growing pains & the the high intensity of the NFL. Now where I have a problem with Gute & McManus is....why would you pay a 1 million dollar bonus in March? He could have insisted on deferring the bonus until after the draft or cut him then & there? McManus was great the year before after the other disasters at kicker.....but the Chicago game sealed his fate! Why waste a 1 million dollar bonus in todays NFL of CAP restraints?

Havrisk? Made a great kick from 61 yards out! but he missed a couple easy kicks to!

I hope that the rookies will be able to step up & play instaed of sitting on the bench to develope over two or three seasons.....Go Pack Go

They paid McManus the bonus so they wouldn't be desperate for a kicker going into to the draft. The whole league would've known they needed a kicker, which would've increased the chance of another team drafting the kicker before the Packers could. Deferring the bonus was not an option. That's not how bonuses work.

As for the rookies, Trey Smack will probably be the kicker, and I think Brandon Cisse, Chris McDaniels, and Dani Dennis Sutton will probably play quite a lot, even if they are not starters.

It would be absolutely foolish to not have two kickers all the way through the preseason.
Injuries and illnesses HAPPEN. Especially to a kicker with an over-used leg during camp.

Additionally, there is the possibility that Smack's high-arching kicks are more wind-affected than a straight-line kick; it would be good to have another kicker if that is discovered.
Wind won't affect the many indoor games, but Lambeau is tough.

Ryan Longwell was a camp leg. I am rooting for Lucas. People seem to think that Smack is automatically the starter. The Packers don't work that way.
