Hello Wisconsin: The LaFleur-Era Motivation Problem

The LaFleur-era lack of resilience, beer, steak and more.

It’s not entirely shocking that the Packers lost Sunday, or even that they looked utterly useless in doing so.

In fact, you’ve almost started to see a pattern emerge with the Matt LaFleur Packers. In three of their four years they’ve started slow out of the gate, only narrowly avoiding a loss in week one of 2019 because they were playing a bad Bears team. They got thoroughly embarrassed in week one of 2021 and got dominated by a divisional rival in week one of this year.

Nearly every loss of the Matt LaFleur era has resulted in the Packers never really being in the game at all. They get down early, then curl up into a ball and completely lose any hope of being able to stay in the game. I’m having a hard time thinking of a single instance in which things went wrong early for the Packers, they got down by more than a score, and then rallied in a big way to win the game.

It is an unfortunate trend: the LaFleur-era Packers have little in the way of resilience, and when they lose it tends to be in embarrassing fashion.

We’re in year four now, and this is a trend that doesn’t seem to be coming to an end. If the Packers are going to have any chance at finally getting over the hump and returning to/winning a Super Bowl this season, they’re going to need to be able to take their lumps and respond.

Take the Packers’ 2010 Super Bowl championship team. It was a team that lost 6 games, but always fought. They overcame a massive number of injuries to key players, a couple heartbreaking overtime losses, and never trailed by more than seven points all season, showing an incredible amount of resilience and persistence.

Consider the 1996 Super Bowl championship team, which routinely blew teams out, but had a midseason lull following a large number of injuries to the receiving corps. That lull included yet another loss in Dallas, which brought back some of the questions about whether the team could compete with the Cowboys of the world, as well as a near-embarrassing loss against the St. Louis Rams before a Doug Evans interception turned the team’s season around and the team found its mojo again.

At this point, this has happened so many times in the last few years that I’m sick of writing it. At the moment, the Packers have earned the reputation of a bunch of weak-willed front runners.

The question is, what are they going to do about it this season?

Wisconsin Beer of the Week

Fall is mere days away, and with it comes a brand new season of beer! I recently wrote about another Hillsboro Brewing Company beer, and this is another I just picked up, their Marzen called Friday Night Lights.

For those who are unfamiliar, a marzen is a type of malty lager that is essentially the same thing (or at least close enough to) an Oktoberfest. It’s designed to be crisp and refreshing with an extra sweetness and depth of flavor you wouldn’t get in your lighter lagers and pilsners.

The “Friday Night Lights” name is evocative of fall evenings in its own right, a reference to high school football games that take place on Fridays (where SURELY no one is drinking any alcoholic beverages before or after!).

You gotta love a good marzen, and Hillsboro has done it well. That’s two beers of theirs now that I’ve tried in recent weeks and I gotta say, I’ve dug it. They’re simple yet satisfying. Sometimes that’s all you need.

Offensive line decisions make no sense

For two games in a row, Matt LaFleur and the team’s offensive staff have made what were broadly considered the wrong personnel decisions along the starting offensive line.

This time, there was absolutely no reason Jake Hanson should have ever seen the field, especially at guard. In fact, Hanson likely should not be on an NFL roster. He was absolutely atrocious in both pass protection and run blocking.

Anyone with eyes could see Zach Tom was the better player during preseason. It makes no sense to this observer that Tom saw the bench until Jon Runyan, Jr. suffered a concussion. He should have started the game, and ideally at right tackle, while letting Royce Newman play his preferred position of right guard.

As soon as Tom got into the game he made an immediate difference, which makes the decision to start Hanson even more baffling. Everyone saw what the Packers had in Tom during the month of August. He easily passed up Sean Rhyan on the depth chart and could well have earned a long-term starting spot. Even if the Packers ever get both David Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins back, it would not surprise me to see Tom remain in the lineup at right guard over both Newman and Hanson.

There have been other examples of the Packers inexplicably using what most would consider the “wrong” personnel in the Packers era. Just look as recently as the game against San Francisco in the playoffs, when the Packers inexplicably chose not to start Yosh Nijman at left tackle in relief of Bakhtiari after he’d strung together a series of strong performances. It was one of many factors that resulted in the Packers losing the game. Or consider the way the Packers decided to deploy Jaire Alexander this week, or, going back even farther, decisions to play guys like Darrius Shepherd over Allen Lazard.

It shouldn’t be that complicated. Play the better players. I’d challenge any coach on the staff to explain to me why it was a better idea to trot out Hanson than to let Zach Tom play the whole game. I’d love to know the justification there.

The best steak I’ve ever had

My wife and I recently celebrated our seventh wedding anniversary, and for our date we went out to Five O’Clock Steakhouse here in Milwaukee. And wowza, what an incredible dining experience.

I was eagerly anticipating the meal for weeks. Five O’Clock has the reputation as being Milwaukee’s best steakhouse and a really legitimate throwback supper club experience. It is also nationally ranked among the nation’s best 50 steakhouses.

I ordered the ribeye, and it was charred and grilled to absolute perfection. The outside was crisp and darkened from the aus jus glaze that is the restaurant’s trademark, and the inside was delicious and juicy. We got it with a baked potato which was an A+ choice, would highly recommend. They serve it with their house made sour cream and chives.

The meal began with your traditional supper club style salad bar and fresh-baked bread and butter, then we each ordered the french onion soup as an appetizer, and WOW that was also delicious. I love a good french onion soup, and this one was just sheer perfection.

I have to give a shoutout to the bartenders as well for the delicious cocktails. My wife had the standard brandy old fashioned, and I had a sidecar and a really fun spicy bourbon cocktail that was outstanding.

Knowing it was our anniversary, they gave us a complementary piece of key lime pie, which was just a perfect way to end the meal.

It was the best steak I’ve ever had and one of my favorite dining experiences. I LOVE a classic Wisconsin supper club. They’re not that easy to find any more, at least in the southeastern part of the state, and this one was just top notch stuff. Expect to pay a lot, but it’s worth every dollar. I always get a chuckle when people say “I can grill a great steak at home.” Not like this you can’t.

Aaron Rodgers on Amari Rodgers

In case you missed it on Wednesday afternoon, Aaron Rodgers was asked about several of his young wide receivers.

He gave some praise to the rookies, Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, saying:

"These are good kids. They really are. They want to please, they want to do the right thing, they care about it. I'm going to figure out a way to continue to get on the same frequency with them"

But when asked about Amari Rodgers, Aaron blanched a bit. His response was flat, and in few words he spoke volumes:

“Yeah, he’s returning for us now. That’s all I got on it.”

That was in response to a reporter wondering if Amari would get more opportunities to be a part of the Packers’ offense, or what his role might look like moving forward.

I mean, people will try to make excuses for this or say it’s not a reflection on Amari Rodgers at this point in his career, but this is about as big of a slight as it’s ever gotten from Aaron Rodgers toward a teammate before. Not even “he has a lot of learning and adjusting to do” or anything like that. To me, this came off as almost public shaming.

Now, as I’ve mentioned in this space many times before, Amari Rodgers contributed less than nothing to the Packers in 2021. In fact, every time he set foot on the football field he actively harmed the team’s chances of winning. He didn’t play a single offensive snap on Sunday, which also tells you everything you need to know about how the coaches view him.

Is it completely impossible that he could turn it around and become a valuable contributor to the team? Of course not. But the odds appear incredibly long at this point, and Rodgers is trending toward being yet another waste of a third round pick.

Around the NFC North

Once again we’ll take a quick look around the NFC North at what the Packers’ rivals are doing.

  • The CHICAGO BEARS took down the 49ers in week one in the Soldier Field slop, and so the “Justin Fields hive” online is buzzing with excitement after his day that produced 121 yards, a 47.7 completion percentage and about an 85 passer rating. In fairness, those are pretty outstanding numbers for a Bears quarterback. Unfortunately, this week they get the Packers who are coming off an embarrassing loss and their part owner Aaron Rodgers. Throw that week one game for both teams out the window–it’s about to get real.

  • The DETROIT LIONS put up a much better fight than most would have predicted against the Eagles last week, indicating they could end up being a thorn in the side of a lot of their opponents who might usually expect an easy win. A few too many miscues were the major difference in the game, but the Lions managed to get some scoring in and at least end up making it a game. The Commanders are a worse team than the Eagles, so the Lions certainly stand a chance to steal a win this week, but you’re going to be hard-pressed to find many games in which they’re favored this season.

  • The MINNESOTA VIKINGS won their Super Bowl, and get to continue lording it over Packer fans that Kirk Cousins has a winning record against the team. They’ll certainly enjoy spouting off about that when the Packers have the division wrapped up by early December. That defensive front could be a problem if both Danielle Hunter and Za’Darius Smith manage to stay healthy, though it will be interesting to see them play against a line that does NOT include Jake Hanson. And of course, we already knew Justin Jefferson was an insane talent. He’s likely already a top-three player at the position, which is pretty incredible for a player of his age.

Week one silver linings

Okay, it wasn’t COMPLETELY bad for the Packers in week one. A few silver linings did exist.

First, Quay Walker looked like a legit inside linebacker. He played with speed, aggression and versatility. Of course, it’s just the Packers’ luck that he ended up injured. But he did practice today (along with Bakhtiari, Jenkins and Lazard), so that bodes well. Walker looked like a seasoned veteran already, so having him alongside De’Vondre Campbell is going to be a whole lot of fun.

Second, Aaron Jones looked explosive. Too bad he got hardly any touches, but when he did, good things happened. He’s the Packers’ best offensive weapon and the team needs to find ways to get him involved however they can.

Third, Zach Tom looks like the real deal. There were some who were hesitant to make any proclamations about him because, well, preseason, but he came in and threw his weight around against starters and looked like he belongs in this league.

Fourth, the game could, and should, have been much closer. A Christian Watson drop, a failed goal line conversion. That’s 14 points right there the Packers should have had, which completely changes the complexion of the game. By no means did the Packers deserve to win, but they weren’t nearly as far out of it as they were in week one of last season.

Finally, I thought the officiating was pretty good. We barely noticed them, and it felt like their calls (and no-calls) were consistent. I noticed this in the Bills/Rams game as well. It’s great to hot have to feel like you’re getting refball shoved down your throat for three hours.

Final look: Bears at Packers and Week Two Picks

Okay, so I’m not off to a great start with my Packers picks, but when you talk about needing a get right opponent, this is the kind of situation you want.

The Packers have absolutely dominated the rivalry with the Bears since the Aaron Rodgers era began. Losing on the road to a Vikings team in week one that the Packers have already struggled with is one thing. Losing at home to a bad Bears team? That’s almost unthinkable.

While it’s unlikely to look pretty all of the time, the Packers should be able to dispatch the Bears with relative ease. Look for a comfortable margin of victory, something along the lines of 27-13. The defense gets its stuff together against Justin Fields, and the offense pounds the rock a bit more after getting off rhythm in the passing game last week.

As for my other picks.. HOO BOY it was rough going for me in week one, and just another reminder that you never really know what to expect in the first week of the season, especially in this era where very few starters play at all before week one.

Here are my picks for week two:

CHIEFS over Chargers

STEELERS over Patriots

PANTHERS over Giants

BROWNS over Jets

COLTS over Jaguars

RAVENS over Dolphins

SAINTS over Buccaneers

COMMANDERS over Lions

49ERS over Seahawks

RAMS over Falcons

RAIDERS over Cardinals

BRONCOS over Texans

COWBOYS over Bengals

PACKERS over Bears

BILLS over Titans

EAGLES over Vikings

Spot on article, congrats on your anniversary, the beer looks good, and I agree with your take about the nostalgia and enjoyment of a good OG supper club experience.

So I looked at the data and was shocked. By my count 11 of the 20 biggest comebacks (by points) in Packers history have occurred during the Aaron Rodgers' era, but only 1 of the 11 was with MFL as head coach. Maybe if I dug in I would find that some of the games were not started by #12, but my assumption was wrong. My assumption was that this is a #12 problem as well as a MLF problem, and I was wrong. So I don't know if something has changed with #12, or if this is purely an indication of MLFs coaching ability, but something is definitely wrong in Titletown. We talk a lot about how MLF doesn't lose two games in a row. He needs to figure out how to right the ship in-game as well as he does between games. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/gnb/comebacks.htm

Zach Tom. I said it before the draft: He is the most Packers lineman in the draft. The Packers need answers right now. Newhouse is not an answer at RT. Hanson is not an answer anywhere. Zach Tom needs to be in the equation, and the Packers need to try other options at whichever spot he doesn't take.

Newhouse is long gone from the Packers, but Newman is not the answer at RT either! (Sorry Mark, couldn't pass that one up......)

On the bright side, Newman is MUCH better than Newhouse was! Man, what a turnstile he was--hmm...why did that just bring Hanson to mind...

I think you were RIGHT when you thought it was an Aaron Rodgers problem; I think he is a different QB/player the past five years or so.
McCarthy preached resilience, but I doubt that LaFleur preaching it would change Rodgers' behavior, in particular, his leadership while on the sideline. Ever since he started standing with Jordy all the time, he has emotionally removed himself from everyone else.
I'm not a big believer in needing to be a rah-rah leader, but I DO believe you can be a negative impact on team energy--and I've seen a lot of that from Rodgers over the past six years or so.

MLF is on a three game losing streak right now Lions, 49ers, Vikes. He is on a two game regular season losing streak, Lions and Vikes, as well as a two game post-season losing streak Niners and Bucs. If he loses again this week he will have three losses to each of the division rivals in the last three regular season games. I hope that gets him and the team motivated because getting skunked in the division kills seasons in every way.

I honestly don't know what to think of this team but I'm NOT going to completely freak out...YET. The WAY a MLF team loses does concern me. Get them down by 10 points and they curl up into a ball and cry for mama. That includes the guy they paid $50 million to play QB. The team just doesn't seem to have the heart to REALLY FIGHT when adversity hits.

Rodgers on Rodgers...What a DICK! Do your teammates or coaches call you out when you IGNORE the open man, don't even look their way again because they dropped a pass earlier in the game? I'm REALLY starting to dislike this guy. Yes, he gives the Packers the best chance to win. But he's a shitty leader who's an arrogant control freak. He's a whiner and his body language consistently gives a negative message.

The O-Line... If Hanson is the starter this week I'll be shocked. Zack Tom belongs in the starting lineup even after Bahktiari and Jenkins return.

8 touches for Aaron Jones... When I saw that stat I couldn't believe it. Jones and Dillon need AT LEAST 40 touches or more a game. Week one they had like 25 IIRC. Didn't MLF say these two would be MORE involved in the game plan to make up for the loss of Adams? LaFleur NEEDS to get a grip on his QB. Hey, I'm glad they get along and like one another but LaFleur is the HC and I'm actually starting to doubt this guy a bit.

Lots of things you say I often don't agree on with it, but the Rodgers stuff is right on and more. The guy has become a hot pile of shit with his takes and other players. And keep your {Rodgers} health and drug concerns personally to yourself! The ass has become insufferable!

I hear you, but.

While nobody should care, I've said before that I am a 'take people as they are' guy so I don't read so much into 12's body language or sound bites. I make no inferences about anybody's thoughts or feelings, and when a guy seems upset or angry under heavy stress-- even if he's the leader-- I just don't... launch into heavy personal criticisms of the person or blame him for somebody else's errors.

Rather, I look to people in a position to know (and in spite of this being dump on MLF day), there's this from Rob Demovsky's report: "I think he's done as good a job as we could possibly expect," Packers coach Matt LaFleur said when asked how Rodgers has handled his new situation. "He's always hard on himself and I know there were a couple plays that he certainly would like to have back, just like there's some play calls that I would like to have back as well. That happens every game, right? But I think he's done a great job of demanding the urgency from those young guys, yet putting an arm around them as well at the same time."

Putting an arm around them at the same time. This is, at least, possibly true, yes?

Do you think that maybe Rodgers was implying that he's not the coach and doesn't understand why he's only returning kicks was a shot at the coach and not the player. Keep telling yourself who's the shittier person.

I am not as sold on Tom (for this season) as the author is. PFF graded Tom quite poorly in run blocking (even worse than Hanson). I think Tom has really good feet and athleticism and is good in pass pro already, but he needs a year in the weight room before he is going to be an effective run blocker in the NFL. Given an aging QB1 and that Tom is a better pass blocker than Hanson, perhaps Tom is the better choice at RG, but he isn't a great answer at least this season. I think I would rather see Newman at RG and Walker or Jones get the shot at RT.

The author talks about player resilience, but I wonder how much of the Packer's inability to respond has to do with the coaching staff's inability to make in-game adjustments? Is it attitude or is it coaching incompetence? If the players don't believe the game plan is working and the coaches can't change it, do the players give up? It is a bit of a "chicken or egg" question, but I am leaning more toward in-game adjustment issues than player motivation.

We have to ask ourselves if Tom entering the game really resulted in better OL play or if the Vikings were shifting tactics and not so much afraid of letting the Packers run the ball. It also might say as much about how JRJ was playing, as anything else...which is a scary thought because we all seem to see him as a solid OG.

Agreed that the Vikings shifted to more pass prevent defense which allowed the Packers to run the ball better, but even then Tom was not exactly blowing people off the line. Nijman was the guy opening holes on the left side, not Tom. MrTundra doesn't like PFF grades, but they are certainly a directional indicator that Tom has work to do on his run blocking.

I do think Tom is going to be a good one long term as his quick feet and athleticism make him a good starting prospect, but he needs to get stronger.

You need to watch Tom's game snaps again, Guam. On (the very few run plays) Tom blocked, he routinely got to the second level, stayed low, and moved guys for the RBs. Hanson couldn't even win his first block!

Tom was very good staying in front of his man on pass plays. His feet, coordination and leverage are very good.

Newman seems a serviceable G, but at T, he is a liability. Tom can hold up at both and right now, I would make him part of the "best 5" Stenovich and LaFluer harp about all the time, but now mostly ignore in favor of time spent on the team on in the NFL.

A consensus strength of the team is being diluted by coaching decisions that make no sense.

I'll go back and take another look LP. I just didn't see Tom move anyone on my first rewatch although he did move well to the second level on several plays. I think Tom will be a good one, but still think he will be much better next year than this year.

I suspect we will get a good look at Tom Sunday as Runyon is still in protocol and will likely not play. The Bears have a good defensive front and linebackers, so it will be a good test for Tom.

"I just didn't see Tom move anyone on my first rewatch although he did move well to the second level on several plays."

Tom's not going to be an IOL who will excel in power gap concepts and move the pile. That's not his game, and probably never will be. He's going to wall people off and create creases, but he's not going to make gaping holes. Getting to that second level is what he's likely to do best in that scenario. If he's playing on the interior, he's a guy who's going to need to play on the move to be at his best.

"The Bears have a good defensive front and linebackers"

Let's not make too much out of a crappy game played in ugly conditions against a young QB who limits what the offense can do downfield. That was a downhill defensive game from the start for the Bears and it minimized their shortcomings---especially when Elijah Mitchell got hurt and was no longer tearing off chunks of yards on the ground for SF. Any defense will look better if they don't have to worry about anything downfield.

This is a bad football team. Eberflus is a good defensive coach, but his personnel aren't. It's supposed to rain off and on Sunday night at Lambeau, which might be a problem, but it won't be the monsoon the Bears played in last week. The Packers need to make the Bears' defense play the whole field, laterally and downfield. If they do, this game won't be close and the Packers offense will score...plenty.

I think PFF did get that wrong though. He was only on the field for 6 runs and I saw clips of two of them where he had a positive impact on the play, including a really nice kick out block on the big run by Jones. I think there was a reason the runs all went to the left after the Jones run.

This Tom as a panacea mantra is as deluded as the teams’ belief in Hanson (which continues if one takes LaFleur’s comments at face value).

Tom is a prospect for the future who has great technique but physical limitations. He sometimes looks great and he sometimes gets manhandled. He’s not a starting caliber guy and at this point and none of his games have supported such an assertion.

He is better than Hanson, but that bar is so low. Hanson was/has been actually better at run blocking than Tom consistently, not much or adequately, but it’s still true. He shouldn’t be on the field because he’s a total liability against the pass.

The sad fact is Hanson should not be in the roster. Tom should be but as a back up and emergency starter at this point. The problem is that 1) Rhyan, the higher pick has looked bad consistently and is at present likely unplayable, 2) that we are playing our best healthy RG out of position as well, and 3) Jenkins is absent.

There’s a good chance Tom starts at LG on Sunday anyway. If they role out Hanson/Newman then who is up next? Rhyan? That is a farcically bad risk distribution. We would be wise to go into Sunday with Jones and Walker active, one at RT, Newman back at G and the other active as a back up extra OL type TE behind Lewis. If we have a weak link, keep it as far outside as possible and give the player consistent help. Strengthen the middle.

I predict now that they won’t do that. LaFleur doubled down to support his coaches faith in Hanson. Hanson will start. This is truly draytonesque in its willful blindness, but go look at the PS … there’s no move to add options at G and nothing there to start with. If, as I suspect, Hanson starts, I think it’s time to stop pretending LaFleur has any business pretending he should be a Head Coach.

This isn’t primarily on Rodgers, it’s on us not having a Head Coach able to coach Rodgers to get the best out of himself and not able to do the same for a team because he lacks the judgement and awareness required. Good head coaches don’t tolerate or defend obvious inadequacy and don’t repeat the same failings year in and year out.

This is a good team with a really good QB that got him his record. He’s not helped them, they’ve carried him. The evidence keeps accumulating that he is all mouth and no trousers. Hanson will destroy his last shred of credibility in my view. When a team needs a scolding for effort in the first 30 minutes of a season, that tells me that it’s really not the players but the coaching or that the players really don’t believe. Perhaps some of them are all too aware of the self-congratulatory bubble that The LaFleur era has built in spite of continually failing.

Cold, you seem stuck on your "Tomfoolery" comment from weeks ago and most of your comments on him are remain negative.

I do not know what you see...vs what I see when he plays football. He actually played G with more power and success than did JRJ. The O had instant success with Tom and Nijman on the left they did not have with JRJ.

We will agree to disagree on Tom. I think he is a very good, technically sound football player with a skillset of quick feet, outstanding leverage, and hand placement that is difficult to teach...and he will only get better, especially with the strength coaches.

Tom is not going to be an all pro rookie, but he seems a solid NFL football player right now. My best 5 OL on the roster now are Jenks, Dave, Myers, JRJ and Tom.

Tom is a promising guy with good technique and leverage whi needs more functional strength. He is better than Hanson, but he’s not yet at a starter of choice, at least not one we should want this year. His performances show that, but there’s this fantasy that he’s the solution that we are missing. He’s our best back up G, he will probably start at LG. I hope he holds up. He was just adequate in Sunday.

Refball. I never heard that one before. That's great.

Amari Rodgers has been an odd story this year. He looked better in the preseason than he did last year, but the fact that they were playing him in the fourth quarter of preseason games suggested that he was fighting for a roster spot rather than being slated to become an important part of the offense. They finally seemed to settle on him as a returner and a gadget player, but then they failed to put him on the field on offense in a game where a gadget play or two might have helped. So maybe he made the team by default because they could not find another competent kick returner. I still think it was a huge blow to his career right out of the gate when Randall Cobb was brought back, but then, if Cobb hadn't taken his place as slot receiver maybe we would have just found out sooner that Amari wasn't going to succeed as a WR.

The lack of resilience really seems to be a problem, and I have a nagging feeling that it has something to do with Aaron Rodgers, who is looking more and more like a hired gun as years go by. Even when he praises teammates it seems calculated and insincere to me. He's still one of the best QBs in the league, but maybe he's really not the heart and soul of this team. Maybe nobody is.

A silver lining that was not mentioned in the article was the special teams, which were downright competent. I think they will be fine this year, but I'm withholding judgment because last year I seem to recall the special teams having several games in which they were not a liability, including some games down the stretch. So one game is not enough to judge the new special teams.

Yes, the Jake Hanson thing is weird. Thanks for a fun article full of good takes.

I think Amari was playing in the 4th quarters in preseason was because they were not playing Cobb, then. Amari is not getting reps in games, because Cobb is playing where Amari would be playing. It will be hard for Amari to get playing time, unless Cobb gets injured. I do not understand the fan negativity around Amari. He had a good game against the vikings, on STs. He was not involved with the offense, hardly at all, if ever, last Sunday. Let him be a part of this offense and maybe things will change for him, regarding fans' attitudes towards him.

Yeah, he appears to have solidified his position as kick returner, so there's that. I wonder if Aaron Rodgers' loyalty to Cobb has caused him to be down on Amari. On the other hand, Jordan Love didn't throw the ball to Amari a whole lot in the preseason games, most likely because he wasn't getting open very much. I haven't given up on Amari yet, but the coaching staff's refusal to put him on the field against the Vikings suggests that maybe they have. We'll see. Things can change fast in this league.

Don't worry about Amari. I think he'll play if they can ever use the running game. If Jones and Dillon didn't get used enough, they weren't going to use Amari. I think they're using him as the third back on game day for now.

This getting on A-Rod might do the trick. If the media can't put a chip on his shoulder, we'll have to do our part. He seems like a different player when he thinks he has to prove people wrong. This is a team sport. Let's do our part and keep chipping away!

Amari not getting a single offensive snap versus the Vikings is a pretty strong indictment of a third round draft choice in his second year. Follow that up with QB1's complete lack of endorsement of Amari as a WR (see recent quotes by ACR) and you can see another third round bust in progress. This isn't about the fans being down on Amari, his coaches and QB are down on him and his tenure on the team is looking tenuous.

We did run some gadget plays. We just used Doubs and Watson because they are better athletes and more credible dual threats from any formation/personnel grouping. That’s the issue with Rodgers. He’s not even the best active option in the Ervin role (if that is still a thing). As long as Watson and Doubs aren’t Locked into a role as primary outlets on an every down basis, they will be available and will likely get the call in such circumstances most of the time, especially Watson, who has far more experience running out of the backfield in fact.

This has been LaF's MO, even with gadget guys like Tyler Ervin and Tavon Austin on the roster: he likes to run his gadget plays with his base, 11 personnel lineup. That means that sweeps and such aren't always being run by the little shifty guys, they're being run by the Geronimo Allisons, ESBs, Allen Lazards, etc. Whether this is an "illusion of complexity thing" or a desire to not tip one's hand by running the gadget play through the obvious gadget player, who knows...?

I've always marveled at how the Packers take forever to get going. Early season games are an Achilles heal for this team and it seems, about the only way the vikings can beat the Packers, is if they play us early on. I agree that the score should have been much closer, as well. Watson dropping a sure TD pass was bad. Dillon's getting stuffed at the goal line and being tackled from behind by an unblocked Zadarious, was 7 less points on the board. Rodgers throwing to a double covered Tonyan, on 4th down, at the goal line, instead of looking for a receiver underneath the coverage, to move the chains and give us 4 more downs and chances to score. If those muffs were points we'd be down 23-21. Who knows if the vikings would have scored all their points, if we had scored on any of those plays? Defense had it's moments, too. The whole Jaire not covering Jefferson, until late in the game, was not good planning. Zone defense allowing Jefferson to be wide open, was a huge mistake. Not having Tom on the OL, as a starter, was a mistake. Sounds like he will be our LG, this week. The Hanson/ Newman debacle on the right side of the line was really bad. Rasheed Walker or Caleb Jones at RT cannot be that bad. Onto the Bears and hopefully our lethargic play we saw vs minnesota, was a fluke. GO PACK, GO!!! AND RUN THE DAMN BALL!!!

LOL, that's a pretty strong indictment. Have to agree, though, when we saw him sprawled out on the sideline bench almost as if saying, "going to be a long day, nothing I can do...."

He had to be expecting some trials and tribulations with all the new pieces on offense. Maybe a win vs. the Bears will snap him out of it, at least temporarily.

Good article Tim. I keep reading about the Packers folding when down, the wrong people starting on our O-line, RBs not getting used, no in-game adjustments and other fixable issues. These assessments keep repeating. Seems like we have a coaching problem. Strong coaching moves this team in the direction that suits the personnel on the roster.

We are still an Aaron Rodgers lead team that goes as he goes. When Rodgers gets punched he pouts and stops leading. So far, Matt LaFleur is not enough coach for this quarterback, this squad or for the coaches that work under him. I doubt that this will change with Aaron Rodgers managing the team.

"It is an unfortunate trend: the LaFleur-era Packers have little in the way of resilience, and when they lose it tends to be in embarrassing fashion. "

I don't know if that's a measure of resilience. I think it's more a measure of when the game plan isn't on, or an opponent's is, the Packers don't fare well. That comes back more to in-game adjustments. I would point to the fact that an MLF team has never lost back-to-back regular season games...that's more a measure of resilience, or perhaps a better indication of it. When they take a gut shot one week, it doesn't lead to extended slumps,

Jake Hanson--this guy has taken more shots in the last couple weeks than a cheating husband on Doctor Phil. He is what he is, which is nothing special, and perhaps really playing out of position. Maybe the greater concern at this point is the fact that the coaches felt strongly enough that he was their best option on the right side (and moving Newman), indicates either a real lack of faith in the OL depth or a general lack of depth altogether. As LH points out, the Packers were already starting the season playing OL #3-7. JRJ's injury presumably means that the Newman/Hanson combo may resurface on Sunday night. The Packers brought up CJones, which could be read as a need to bolster OT depth, but is likely more an indication of him drawing outside attention on the PS.

Jaire-Jefferson--a lot has been made of the Packers not following Jefferson with Jaire on Sunday. I read a nice piece the other day that indicated that when you move a CB around like that to trail an opponent's best WR, it puts a tremendous strain on the secondary to move and adjust. When that WR goes in motion, all the DBs are impacted instead of that guy being passed off...so it requires great communication and awareness, which is why teams just don't follow WR with their best CBs very much. That said, Jefferson feasted on the Packers in zone coverage on Sunday, which seemed to be more a function of poor pass rush, lousy drops and depth by the ILB and S, and--in general--iffy spatial awareness. If you look at Jefferson's catches, they were 20+ yd or nothing. I would expect to see a different mode of attack by the defense when they see the Vikes later this season.

This week's games...
1. Packers boatrace the Bears. They should hang 35 on this team, even with an offense we see as "challenged". I think Lazard plays, and the Packers can't flirt with an 0-2 start in the division. If one of Bakh/Jenkins is close to ready, regardless of what was reported last week, I think they play.
2. Lions will beat Washington IF Swift plays. I think Jared Goff is among the bottom 6-8 starting QBs in the league, but he's got a really good OL in front of him, and has a real rapport with the sun god. Deandre Swift is the key to that offense, though (true to form, he's already dinged up), and we shouldn't mistake a close final score against Philly for a close game. Still, I think the Lions pull this out--Carson Wentz can't be effective two games in a row, can he?
3. Vikings beat Philly. I hate to say that. Philly is all about Jalen Hurts, and if they can bottle him up in the pocket and force him to win on his arm, he'll be underwhelming in most games. I think the Philly defense is more beatable than people give them credit for, and if the MN OL is finally figured out--after years of sloughing along at or below mediocrity--the offense will score. Still, the Vikings historically have been kind of a roller-coaster team, and that secondary is utterly beatable...maybe O'Connell has things leveled out. I think MN is the better team, here.

Dobber, here’s a question for you. If we go in and bear a Bears team soundly, how much brighter light do you expect to see in terms of us as a legitimate playoff contender? Put it another way, how many of the issues that are surfacing might that lay to rest in the context of playing good teams when it matters?

It’s very rare to lose every game. We are going to win some and maybe win some comfortably, but the underlying issues have been surfacing for some time in my opinion. Admittedly, I thought that after last season, but we seem all too willing to reset each year and forget that this has played out before.

Jake Hanson - "Maybe the greater concern at this point is the fact that the coaches felt strongly enough that he was their best option on the right side (and moving Newman)"

To me this is the biggest thing. The coaches have done a tremendous job with the OL and overcoming bigtime injuries. That being said it feels like they sometimes have a problem with over evaluating some players. I think back to last year with Kelly starting over Yosh.

The preseason games have showed us that Tom was better then Hanson. So why wasn't he starting in front of him?

Caleb Jones - I think they brought him up because other teams were trying to sign him.

I hope you're right, but I don't see this offense, with this line, scoring 35 against Chicago.

Lions will lose.

Vikings will not win on the road against Philly. Last week, with basically no blocking, Jalen Hurts (the QB taken after Love) put 38 points on the board. On the road. Minnesota has already played their perfect game....they won't do it two weeks in a row.

Ok a lot of talk about getting the ball in the hands of Jones and Dillon. I agree. And Dillon is a good RB and has great feet and good hands to go along with his impressive thighs. AND Aaron Jones is a much better RB! Get Jones the ball 65% of the time to Dillons 35%!
Jones is electric and tilts the field to the Packers when he is getting the Rock. Jones despite his size is better near the goal line as he finds the creases and slides in!! There is no comparison to the two running backs and Dillon having more touches is insane!! Aaron Jones is elite! Jones = Touchdowns!

One of the negative things about football from a fans standpoint is there's generally only one game per week. That leaves ample time to micro-analyze every gesture, etc.

But I have to agree that something is lacking from Matt LF's approach. To be fair he lost a good deal of coaching and player talent over the last season. They also retained a lot of talent.

I talk too much about Lombardi, but there was no question the 60's Packers were motivated. I think back on Mike Holmgren. Not once did I question the motivation of the players.
Mike McCarthy's teams sometimes looked in a funk. Matt LF's teams look like they want to get the game over with so they can find something else to do. I look at Dan Campbell's Lions. If they had a little more talent they would be scary. They play hard the whole game, something the Packers really lack. That, my friends, is laid at the feet of the coaching staff, namely the head coach. When Rodgers made fun of LaFleur at the NFL awards night it was telling. Here is a guy they like but don't respect. The proverbial 'players coach'.

I wonder if MLF has the guts to go out there and motivate some of these folks to give it their all or be gone, either now or as soon as possible.

The only motivational effort I see from MLF is when he goes into his head-cheerleader mode. Facing the stands, arms waving up & down attempting to get the fans energized. Name another NFL HC that does that? Not even the new Vikings HC. My fear is the team may have progressed as far as MLF is capable of taking them. A high number of regular season wins, in spite of him. One and done if we make the playoffs. God, I hope I'm wrong. GPG.

Hillsboro Brewing Company -
If you haven't ever made it to Hillsboro Brewing Company, I would recommend it. The atmosphere there is really cool. Very good pizza. The southwestern part of the state imo is the most beautiful part of the state.

Offensive line decisions make no sense -
What I don't get is how this team continues to overthink their OL. Last year in the playoff game rather then go with the OL that got them there they decided to mash it up and it did not work.
This first game they decided to take Newman at put him at RT and start Hanson at RG. That clearly was not the right answer. I get not starting Walker at RT since he missed a lot of camp. What I don't get why they wouldn't have started Tom at either RG or RT. He clearly is one of the top 5 OL on the team. I don't get the hesitancy in starting him especially over Hanson. It reminds me of a few years ago when they had started Lane Taylor over Jenkins. Now that move at least made sense in the fact that Taylor had experience. Hanson has no experience playing. I don't get this move at all.

Silver Linings -
First we did not have our starting OT's. That really changed our OL. We also didn't have our top WR for this game. Once we do get those guys back it will help a ton.

There were a lot of missed opportunities. From the opening play to goal line, to Rodgers over throwing Jones on a 3rd down that would have been a first down. There were a lot of plays that could have changed the way this game went.

Rookies. Walker, Wyatt, Watson, Doubs, Toms, Enagbare all got good playing time. They all showed good things. This perhaps is the best rookie class we have had in a long time. Walker looks legit. If he stays healthy, he could be in the running for DROY. Wyatt didn't flash a ton that I saw live, but he has some really good traits and he will be used a lot. Watson, while he dropped the first pass that would have been a 75 yard TD, watching his speed is crazy. He was open a lot. Doubs also showed some of his speed. Both Rookie WR's are going to have a big impact on this offense. Toms deserves a starting spot on the OL. Enagbare was used in the rotation. He didn't make any big splash plays, but those will come as it slows down for him.

We've covered the questionable/poor coaching decisions and lack of preparedness during the MLF era on numerous occasions. It does make me wonder is anyone managing LaFleur or is management satisfied with making the playoffs each season rather than winning an SB. However in spite of everything the Packers are 39-11 during the regular season since MLF was hired.

Again, the first week of the NFL is always the most over reacted week in sports. It's one game and the Packers beat themselves with lack of execution which is correctable. Watson's dropped pass hopefully corrected with more practice and more coaching. Failure to score on 4th and goal from the Vikings one. Should be correctable with better OL play and better red zone performance overall. As for the defense a better game plan and a better pass rush goes a long way to slowing down Jefferson. It's only one game and one loss. We'll see how the Packers respond this week. If they lay another egg at home against the Bears then the coaching begins to come into question.

Moving on to the Bears game it is a good sign that Lazard, Bak and EJ all practiced yesterday. If they are ready to go that gives a huge boost to our offense and hopefully the entire team.

As for Amari Rodgers I don't know what the coaches are seeing from him during practice or why they kept him out of the offense against the Vikings. Maybe they want him focused on returns and let get settled in that role early in the season. As for Aaron Rodgers comment maybe Aaron is not happy with the fact that Amari Rodgers is not on the field. Maybe he is saying that it's the coaches call and not up to him. It is not necessarily a knock on Amari Rodgers but maybe a comment on the decision not to utilize him in the offense. Who knows? Maybe time will tell.

As I've posted on other threads this week, hopefully our season begins in Week 2 again. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

I rewatched the game, slowly, going back and forth on plays:

1) Hanson was so bad it's inexplicable that he was still in there even in the 2nd quarter. He was either shoved into Rodger's face, run past, or knocked to his knees. If Hanson starts again then the reason for 39 wins under LaFleur is because Gute gave him a lot of talent, not because he's a good coach. Am I the only one who sees him as a deer in headlights when things aren't going well?

2) Walker will be a beast. Fast and tough. Once he figures out the game he's an All-Pro.

3) Wyatt, in the little he was in there, showed energy and speed chasing down ball carriers.

4) Rodger's attitude sucked but if he can start connecting with Watson and Doubs it might change.

5) I agree that Jones and Dillion need to be utilized more, but so should Watson and Doubs. Those two rookies will be formidable offensive weapons. Soon. Cobb and Sammy should be backups, the sooner the better. Rodgers and LaFleur need to start trusting the rookies, even if they make mistakes. They'll burn CBs on a regular basis.

6) Barry's zone works when no one makes a mistake. One mistake and the whole thing collapses. That's what happened Sunday. On numerous occasions, there was at least one player who didn't get the memo. Often Stokes. We thought there were no weak links in the defense but there actually might be; Stokes, Savage, and whoever is rushing the passer when Gary or Smith is out. Garvin was useless. Barry's lack of aggressiveness is a major negative. He relies totally on the front four for the pass rush. It's too predictable and good QBs exploit that. He doesn't make them sweat.

We'll likely go on a winning streak now. The answer to whether MLF and Barry are big game coaches may have to wait til the playoffs. But the answer to whether they are good coaches can come as early as this week. If Hanson is starting and Jones gets eight touches and Jaire is just another zone piece and there is no pass rush because Barry refuses to blitz, then I will have my doubts.

Aaron Rodgers is used to having time in the pocket. He also used to be able to move outside the pocket. That may no longer be the case today. Defenses have caught up to his tendencies. His aversion to INTs have limited a number of throws that other qbs would attempt. He still is an outstanding player. But is limited by the fact that many of his teammates have limited skills.

Matt came in as a new HC and has tried to implement an offensive plan that Rodgers has not bought into fully. My take is that the offense needs a quality slot WR. Cobb is too old and AmRodgers is an inferior player. Plays that used to work for Matt don’t anymore because of the lack of talent on the line and receiver. Matt also has a stubborn streak and does not adjust well. But I like the guy.

The Packers are underperforming under LaFleur because of the usual problems. Rodgers runs the team. Period. He is untouchable because of his contract, and he knows it. The rest of the veterans seem to be taking a similar attitude- we can't be cut because the team doesn't have the ability to absorb the salary cap consequences. And when they get down, instead of someone stepping up and taking charge, exhorting the team that they can still win this game (watch how Brady acts in the Atlanta SB when the Patriots were down 28-3 in the third quarter), and you have a continuing problem. It used to be Favre, now it's Rodgers. And there also seems to be a McCarthy style stubbornness setting in among the coaches. The choice of Hanson over Tom was pure favoritism; for some reason, he was liked, and therefore got the start, while Tom was relegated to the bench. These problems all fall on LaFleur. Can he rein in Rodgers and get him to run the offense as designed? Will he have the guts to overrule his position coaches, and get the best guys on the field? And, finally, and possibly most importantly, can he motivate this team to become resilient, and get Rodgers to become more vocal and accept a bigger leadership role when things are going badly? The last two years, this team has gotten what Rodgers claimed he needed: home field advantage in the playoffs. The results? Two losses. Time to put up or shut up.

Okay, for all the Hanson bashers, I have a question.

What's YOUR starting offensive line for Sunday? I have Nijman at LT, and I'm happy with that. Then we'll have Tom at LG in place of Runyan. Myers at center, of course. Then the fun starts. Our best RT of the available choices is Newman, followed by Rhyan and then Walker. We activated Jones. So that's it. That's what is on the shelf and there's no more back in the stockroom. We traded Van Lanen. We let Turner and Patrick leave in FA. We thought Bakhtiari would be ready. So we made some choices, and we had some bad luck, and we're having to depend on guys that we didn't think we would.

And in the mock drafts, very few people had us taking offensive linemen early. They were 5th round guys. We used two second round draft picks on a WR and a third on Rhyan, but we could have used two seconds on offensive linemen and taken a WR with our 3rd round pick. But we didn't, water under the bridge.

When Jenkins and Runyan are ready....and I think/hope that'll be soon...then we have a better situation, with Nijman-Runyan-Myers-Newman-Jenkins, as long as nobody else gets hurt.(yeah, right). Tom and Hanson and Rhyan were all supposed to be backups.

"Why is Hanson out there?" Because it was our best arrangement after Runyan got hurt. Prior to that, it was the best considered opinion of the Packers organization that Hanson would be the guy to get first shot at RG.

We had quite a few guys not do very much on offense. It's wrong to put so much of this on a backup interior linemen. I'd expect a little more resilience from the leaders of that offense.

XXXXXXXXXXX

As I've said before, and I'll say again, the question for Sunday is not "What do we want to do on offense?" It's "What can we do, considering?" Like many of you, we need to use Dillon/Jones more, but it's boring and frustrating to keep running into a line that has no holes.

Chicago's defense looked decent against the rookie, Lance, at home last week. But now they're on the road, and they aren't facing a rookie. They don't look like a real strong offensive team and I think we'll do a good job on them. We don't need to put 30 points on the board, but we have to score more than 7 and we have to protect our QB.

I think MLF is a good HC, not elite, and I'm not sure that he will ever be. His record, has now become a fallback excuse to cover up the issues he cannot overcome. Rodgers is his bodyguard, and more often than not, as proven by the record of MLF, succeeds in preventing the proverbial 'punch in the mouth' that Tyson says upends the plan of the man when he needs to get in the ring, and this ring for MLF is in-game adjustments more than the pregame planning because everyone has a plan.

MLF will be the product of his QB, and that QB will need to be a legit Top 5 QB, otherwise, MLF will be closer to a .500, or less, HC, because he simply doesn't want to or cannot figure out how to take the punch and hit back. I don't dismiss the possibility that Rodgers, being his bodyguard, enjoys letting MLF take one on the chin now and then for his own smugness sake, but the limit for Rodgers is one, as two gets a finger pointed at him more pointedly than MLF, and why MLF hasn't loss two in a row, yet.

I don’t think he’s a Head Coach at all in all but name. You are so glass half full about him.

Either they fix the OL, or #12 has a bitch. He's Never been a "Whiney Little Bitch" Before. And I don't think he's one now.
This OL stunk. They lost Offensive coaches, that would have "TOLD IT LIKE IT IS". And The voice of the fan has never been loud enough.
(For Fixes to sink in.) The more Rodgers get hits. The more he has the right to bitch about everything! (Mistakes or Not!)
Amari Rodgers is a Bust. We all see it. So why shouldn't he stay away from commenting? He knows it takes time for Rookies to develop. And as long as he's going to get beat up. Friendship is more important to him now than ever. Especially if he goes against a new staff.
Toure deserves his chance! Rodgers did praise him. But No Rookie can tell a coach when they're WRONG!
My bet is, that is why Winfree was promoted. Rodgers isn't going to be told to shut the hell up again. He's got to run the show!
And until this team starts winning. Rodgers is going to screw any Rookie, or coach, that splits up Friendship. He's got LeFluer' Ear!

I’d like to see the D and Joe Barry live up to their offseason hype. I think most of us figured our O would struggle and they did. Game 1 was a great opportunity for the D to show us that they are legit but failed badly. Only one game, but I expect big improvement against the Bears and that includes 12. GPG.

Stop reading here if you don't want to read a very tough post.

Maybe (finally) there will be pressure on MLF. I've been complaining about him for 1+ years but everyone keeps going back to his 39-11 record. Reminds me of another coach who used to say "I'm a winning NFL coach". At least that guy one a SB. MLF has continued to not be able to get back to the SB. I assume that was the main goal when he was hired. If he doesn't do that with AR, who needs him. As far as I'm concerned, he's a failed coach. You would have to be a bad coach to not win most of your games with the players he's had. So he's a mediocre failed coach. How many years do we have to see the same type of mistakes and not realize that he won't or can't change? Wasn't that our problem with the last guy? Unless he can start adjusting mid-game, the season is over (ie. no SB). I'm not going to be suddenly euphoric even if we crush the mediocre Bears.

I'll always be rooting for the Packers but that doesn't mean I have accept and like poor performance.

I'm a little jelly over that steak! The dog is probably wondering why I just drooled a little.
