How the Addition of Randall Cobb Changes the Packers Outlook at Receiver

According to multiple reports, part of the settlement the Packers organization reached with Aaron Rodgers involved the reacquisition of wide receiver Randall Cobb. Cobb all but confirmed this when he posted on social media that he was “coming home.” The deal was made official Wednesday with the Packers sending a sixth round pick in 2022 for Cobb while the Texans will pay $3 million of his salary this season.

So, what does the addition of Cobb mean for the Packers roster this season? In short, it makes an already crowded wide receiver room even more competitive.

The Packers have typically kept six receivers on their active roster in recent years although on occasion, they have kept seven. However, as training camp opens, it appears the team has five receivers who are locks to make the final 53 if they stay healthy.

Davante Adams is clearly the top receiver on the roster. He earned Pro Bowl honors last season and set a franchise record with 115 catches in 14 games. He also led the NFL with 18 receiving touchdowns. Adams is looking to be the highest paid receiver in the league as he seeks a new deal starting in 2022.

Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling are also certain to make the roster if they stay healthy. They will battle to be the starting wideout opposite Adams and both are sure to have big roles in the offense in 2021.

Cobb also should be considered a lock to make the team this season. The organization could not acquire the veteran receiver to make their franchise quarterback happy and then release him on cutdown day. That would undermine the front office’s relationship with Rodgers before fences can be mended.

Cobb is versatile and can line up in the backfield, out wide or in the slot. He gives the Packers an experienced slot receiver who can play a specific role that the team has struggled to fill since Cobb’s departure three years ago.

Rookie third-round pick Amari Rodgers also should be considered a lock to make the final 53. The rookie out of Clemson will probably see the biggest change in his role this season with the addition of Cobb.

Amari Rodgers will now be able to learn behind Cobb, a man who he views as a role model/mentor. This likely means fewer snaps on offense for the rookie who will get to see Cobb up close and learn how to be a professional receiver by watching how the veteran does his job on a day-to-day basis.

The rookie is now even more likely to see more action on special teams and possibly as the team’s return specialist. Cobb also has experience returning kicks and punts and can help mentor Amari Rodgers in those areas as well.

There are presently eight other receivers in training camp battling for one or maybe two roster spots. That means the coaching staff has some difficult choices to make.

Veterans like Equanimeous St. Brown and Devin Funchess now have a tougher road to making the roster. St. Brown has showed flashes of ability in his first two seasons with the team (he missed 2019 due to injuries) but has yet to show enough consistency to get a lot of playing time. If he can stay healthy in training camp, this may be his final opportunity to show the coaching staff he can be a consistent contributor to the offense.

Funchess is looking to return after suffering a broken collarbone in Week 1 in 2019 and then sitting out the 2020 season because of the pandemic. His biggest weapon is his size which can create mismatches against smaller defensive backs and linebackers. Funchess earned some praise from the coaching staff during OTAs, but now with an even more crowded receiver room, he may face an uphill battle in earning a roster spot.

Another player who will be hurt by Cobb’s addition is Juwann Winfree. Winfree stood out during OTAs and clearly made an impression on the coaching staff in his late-season stint with the team. Winfree’s ability to contribute on special teams may give him an edge in the battle for the final roster spot among the receiving corps.

Malik Taylor made the team last year because of his contributions on special teams. He was steady but hardly spectacular as a return specialist but didn’t make any major mistakes either. Taylor will need to show he can contribute more as a receiver if he hopes to be back on the active roster again in 2021.

The rest of the players fighting for roster spots were longshots to begin with. Now, players like Reggie Begelton, Bailey Gaither, Chris Blair and DeAndre Thompkins have an even tougher path to making the team.

Obviously, injuries can change the equation at any time as can strong training camps by some of the players lower on the depth chart or weak play by some of the players who are considered favorites to make the team. But right now, the addition of Cobb makes things tougher for several other players on the Packers receiving depth chart.

Here's to hoping Cobb has something left in the tank. There are too few roster spots to retain a player for their character and mentorship.

While I'm not crazy about the move (and would love to be driven wrong) I'm thankful THIS is the drum AR decided to bang instead of insisting they bring back Kumerow.

Fun fact that connects Kumerow and Cobb, sort of. Cobb has a lifetime 71% catch rate playing with Rodgers. Kumerow had a 69% catch rate when targeted by Rodgers. They are top 2 alltime in catch percentage when targeted by Rodgers. For what its worth.

Funchess is slower than molasses in a Northern WI January. Cobb sealed his fate. He's gone. MVS is a field flipper. Tonyan, as a TE, can do everything Funchess can do...and do it better.

I think the bigger loss due to Cobb could be ESB. Both have thick injury files...but ESB's size, length and speed is special. Cobb is untouchable unless he get injured again and goes on IR.

They aren’t letting MVS go anywhere this year. Injuries may decide the rest, but I think LaFleur really wants Funchess as a hybrid WR/move TE. I think they could keep 6 WRs now and Amari starts as a returner. Not saying that is right but that I expect it. It could well be Sternberger who suffers or a 4th RB.

LOVE Randall Cobb to death. Did we NEED him? No not really. However it does leave Amari free to do the gadget backfield stuff/return kicks while Cobb plays the slot, and vice versa. And Cobb will miss his time anyhow as he normally does, and Amari will get his snaps in the slot still.

Rodgers is right about alot of the names he mentioned. We let Randall Cobb go when we had absolutely NOTHING outside of Davante at receiver in 2019. We picked Jimmy Graham over Jordy (that ones ALWAYS gonna hurt). Jordy was declining but you are INSANE if you think he wouldnt have contributed more than Graham. Losing Jared Cook (coming off probably the greatest catch in Packers postseason history) to sign that POS Martellus Bennett. Charles Woodson should have retired as a Packer, he was still a Pro Bowl player in Oakland and deserved much better from us. And if its true Peppers would have played for very little money - then that was a mistake as well, even a 1 year deal the guy had 11 sacks that first year with the Panthers. Micah Hyde was a STAR for us on defense in the 2nd half/postseason during his final season. He was our best defender that season and he went on to be a Pro Bowler in Buffalo(although i understand he got a big deal from Buffalo). Casey Hayward had his ups and downs for sure but was NEVER not a quality corner, also went on to be a Pro Bowler after he left. Hell even Bashaud Breeland who signed for nothing with the Chiefs should have been back after how he played in 2018.

It is what it is now, I just think Rodgers made valid points - and im not mad at him for it. If the entire offseason you only listened to what James Jones and Aj Hawk had to say about the situation instead of these shills who get paid to lie - none of the things Rodgers said would have been a surprise. Jones and Hawk told us all along what the issues were and how they would end. And here we are. Lets enjoy whats left of this thing.

Hyde is the only one that still drives me crazy, because as a Packer, he was a square peg in a round hole.

Breeland is weird because NOBODY seems to value his production. Whether it is age or injury concerns, he is always playing on short deals under his market value and just continues to perform.

No. They weren’t obvious at the time, indeed most were not heavily contested here, and, with a couple of exceptions, haven’t been shown to be anything other than timely.

With the exception of Woodson and maybe Peppers, the only one that annoyed many commenters was Hayward at the time. Hyde was given a big contract that most people knew couldn’t match, to play S and he proved our coaches wrong and indeed most of the commenters too. He was a much better S than CB, which several here had been calling for us to try (I admit I was not one). That happened during TTs decline as did Hayward, who had been very up and down due to injuries. Nevertheless many here, me included wanted him kept. Rumor has it those two were Ball’s calls, The rest, as Silverstein observed, have been proven by hindsight to be smart moves.

Feel what you like about Rodgers, but that’s just not true about the debate or the judgment of hindsight.

I disagree, Lazard and MVS are not locks. As much as I harp on Lazard and Mvs not being good I don’t dislike them. Mvs as a 4 that can take the top off a defense is great, Lazard as a 4-5 that can do everything a little is also great. They just aren’t 2-3 material or will be in my opinion. So with that said…Rodgers saying he needs Cobb tells me he feels the same way.

I dont think Rodgers said he NEEDED Cobb, he just wanted him back. MVS and Lazard I think are locks. Lazard was THEE best blocking WR in the NFL last season. And MVS like you said is there to take the top off. Funchess and EQ should be cut first IMO.

Possibly, but the best blocking wide receiver is not necessarily an endorsement of a pass catcher. It’s kind of a slap in the face. Again don’t dislike Lazard. But he’s not a lock in my opinion

Packers run almost 50% of the time...and a downfield blocking WR helping to create chunk plays is a slap in the face? You do realize blocking is as important as catching a pass, right? Without blocking there are no receptions, run gains for first downs and TDs.

I am incredibly impressed with how much Coach Matt emphasizes blocking from EVERYBODY not carrying the ball.

Lazard isn't a blazer like MVS, but he's big and fast (4.5). Both are difference makers on a very good offense.

Yes, I knew someone would go with the how blocking is so important approach. Nobody says it’s not, but your first job is to get open and catch the ball as a wr. Also almost every team runs close to 50% of the time unless they suck. We really weren’t running much more than others last year it seemed, but I’d like to see the stats as this gets said constantly. Actually just looked it up, we ran 44.7%. 20 teams over 40%. Baltimore the highest at 55%. The verdict is Matt Lefluers offense isn’t special about how many times we run. At least to this point and it is soooo often used as an excuse for our wide receiver play last year

Lazard was one of the most efficient WRs in the league the last two years. The sheer volume of catches, etc isn't what stands out, but how incredibly efficient he was with any opportunity he had. Before his core muscle injury and surgery last year he had a great catch rate, yards per catch and was making plays at the right time, usually for a first down. He and Rodgers are clearly on the same page, and I see no reason why he couldn't be the number two.

It’s pretty essential in this system, as LaFleur has stated. There really is no number 2 role it’s Adams and a group determined by role. Each has one a little different. The exception is now Amari and Cobb.

Excuse after excuse for mvs and Lazard managing 33 catches and a 50% catch rate. It’s fricking nuts. No one would defend poor offense be line play.. defensive line.. any other position like they defend the wr’s . It’s weird

IMO the Pack will only keep 5 WRs on the 53. Given the run pass balance and increasing 12 and 22 personnel groups to foster the "illusion of complexity" need to have more players at OL, RB and TE.

Cobb makes it an easy odds situation that Funchess, ESB will be playing for another team this year. Hopefully a few of the talented young guys make it to the PS.

Regarding Cobb in the backfield...he has been mostly a dud there. He's good in the slot, not so much wideout. He's much better finding holes and seams from the slot.

I love Randall. But taking snaps from Amari could reduce production for the O. If the coaches and players believe Amari is the better than Cobb and do not play him because #12 demands it...yikes. If Cobb is clearly better than Amari after TC...OK.

I have not seen Matt play the favorites game yet. He is so driven to win with the best 11 on the field every play. His OL is emblematic of this principle.

Cobb might be rostered cryptically to help in Love's elevation. And AR12 could be buying into this. Cobb now will be the scout team QB. This frees Love up to be mentored moreso by #12 and will allow more practice reps with the 1st team, which saves wear AR12's practice burden (not to forget skipping OTAs). For this Rodgers gets his rep redeemed and a chance to succeed elsewhere after 2021.

Yes Cobb will bring some value to the Packers with his experience and mentorship but at what cost - particularly opportunity cost (is the forgone benefit that would have been derived by an option not chosen)? For instance what if his 5+million/yr. salary from the Packers was allocated to a position that is begging for an upgrade - the defensive line? Or with his inclusion to the final 53 - the Packers risk losing a good young prospect like Winfree (for an older, slower and fragile player). In fact, the team might as well pencil Cobb right now on the IR because he's never played a full season since 2015. So looking at it in strictly investment terms - I would rate the projected r.o.i. for Cobb as "poor."

Based on the Packers offseason moves it appears Gute thinks the DL is fine by only adding a day 3 rookie draft choice and must have felt at least part of the problem was coaching. I dont disagree though that after Kenny Clark we have "just a bunch of guys" so far and hopefully they will be keeping an eye one training camp and final cuts to bolster that unit.

Cobb is a fig leaf for Rodgers. So is the worthless void year. Table stakes.

I really like Randall the man. And I hope he can stay healthy which is rare. My concern is if he keeps Amari's development repressed.

Glass half full is if Cobb shares snaps with Amari this year, retires after the season and becomes the WR coach for the Pack. I believe Randall would be a great coach.

I'm not too concerned that Rodgers won't get on the field - given the high probability that Cobb will, at some point in the season, end up on the IR.

As for Cobb being a coach. While he might possess the traits - typically players who have made a ton of money can't be bothered to coach. It's usually the marginal NFL players and grinders who become coaches.

Randall is still a really good player, and seeing him last night just kind of reminded me of what an impact he'll have in our locker room and for our football team. But this is a very important thing for Aaron, and that's why we did it."

Yes, this has been noted in several previous years. Who were those WRs: Diondre Borel and Guthree???? Never played a snap in the NFL. Maybe Winfree will: he had a very good practice today.

Now, I don't like the acquisition of Cobb. I agree that the money would better be spent on a real DL, ILB or CB.

The opportunity cost is not high here. Funchess if he's any good will price himself out of GB. Winfree and Gaithers will pass onto the PS without too much worry - depends on performance, of course. ESB at some point has to produce. Still doesn't play STs. If he did play well, he will price himself out of GB as well. I always thought ESB would be the one to come through.

GB looks to me to be in one year mode. A lot of folks sound like they can't wait for GB to trade AR in 2022. After such a trade might as well shed some serious salaries and start the rebuild. Preston, Z, Turner and Amos all will be pushing 30 in 2022, with Turner 32.
Gonna lose some of them for sure. Me, I would have waited until 2023, but that's just me.

They will always keep six WRs in Packertown. This is a Passing team. E quan will have to go toe-to-toe with Funchess as the the second possession guy behind Lazard. I like the competition. The Offense will have to carry this team, as usual. There are no badasses on the defense. Maybe Gary can assume that title if he is cut loose? Score more points and let the finesse foundation try to pressure the QB and prevent the TD on third and long.

Major Whiplash here. 1. If your a receiver on the team you should be pissed because his arrival means you may be gone, thank you A Rodgers.
2. His arrival means he wants a short game to prevent defensemen from driving him into the ground. Adams and Cobb, short routes, all the others are just going to be running around with their heads cut off. Too bad our coach isnt in charge. But there concerned if they screw with him they may not get to the super bowl.

I don't see Amari Rodgers sitting behind Cobb. I think Cobb will be used more to spell Amari. Cobb has shown the past few years that he can't hold up as a starter. Plus Rodgers is too talented to take him off the field and it sounds like MLF already has him plugged into the roll that Tyler Ervin once filled. I loved Cobb when he was at his prime, and it was refreshing to hear his press conference, but this is Cobb 2021, not Cobb 2014 that is suiting up. I see him more as a coach/mentor and backup to Amari.

Logically, they would both be on the field at the same time ,especially on third downs to add the element of quicks and burst the long-striders do not offer to free up in space and move the ball forward. LaFleur is already drawing double-trouble, short zone variable read options. With Tonyan and the rest of the crew it will be a wild ride. Rodgers will direct the show. The red hats will have to ponder the sixties while this team goes all 21st Century.

These actions sing Super Bowl or Bust to me. We got our conductor behind center and now have his favorite on/off the field buddy signed and certain for at least one year. We are essentially one season away from salary cap hell, so in my mind, this is the year that everyone from the Green Bay Packers management team is committing everything to get to the Big Dance, the Super Bowl 56 with the Packers winning their 14th World Championship.

There is never Cap Hell if you are proactive. The new deals always bring more jing to the table.

The reason Cobb is back is because QB Rodgers values football knowledge. I don't think there is any doubt who the more talented WR is at this point. Amari Rodgers is most likely physically more talented than Cobb at this point. Maybe at any point. BUT QB Rodgers is not a fan of facing live bullets with WR's who are not on the same page. Cobb will start, injuries and Amari Rodgers ability to progress in the play book will determine who ends the season as the slot receiver.

It's obvious to everyone that Adams, Cobb, Lazard, MVS, and Rodgers are WR locks. At the moment I see Funchess, ESB, and Winfree fighting for a possible 6th spot. But the more likely scenario is that the Packers would prefer to stash all three, and maybe several other receivers, on the Practice Squad. So the preseason will determine who the Packers think they can sneak through waivers, and that will end up being the deciding factor. The good news is that even if one or two of them get claimed off waivers, there will be enough others who make it through. The combination of the top five locks and a well-stocked PS will leave the Packers in a pretty comfortable position for wide receivers. Not to mention all the tight ends, and the good pass-catching running backs.

I think that if used properly Cobb will do just fine. Don't use him as an every down WR and rotate with Amari and maybe another. Plus Le fleur likes to use multiple TE's as well which will limit the Slot WR from being on the field at times along with a decent running game, (something the Packers really didn't have when Cobb was there before) . This gives Cobb the best chance to stay healthy for a full season and even though not on the field as much, when he is in, his legs will be fresh and along with Adams will have the best chemistry with the QB.
