Do away with the coin toss!

I’d tweak the college overtime rules:
Each team gets an offensive possession starting at their own 40 yard line. They would have to drive 60 yards for a TD or gain 20 to 25 yards for a long FG attempt. Keep playing until one team out scores the other. I’d use this in the regular season as well, No More tied games!

Someone is always going to come up short there is no simple solution .

Nothing wrong with OT as far as I am concerned. Learn how to play defense and you will get your shot. Other than bad officiating, the best will rise to the occasion.

How would sudden death fix things? It’s literally win coin toss and then get close enough for a FG that’s pretty much what all teams did. Sudden death OT made the coin toss determine the outcome 90% of the time. The new rules at least gives the team a chance if they can hold them to a FG.

This is all because the nfl has skewed the rules to favor the offense so much that the team with the ball first has an advantage.

No matter what you do, at some point you have to say next team to score a wins. As I mentioned, that means the team that goes first has an advantage. Unless the rules say, first team to not answer a score with a like score, loses. Also, if first time fails to score, but 2nd team scores, then 2nd team wins. That's about the only way to make it "fair".

There will always be a challenge flag thrown on critical end of game close coverage plays when the offense is on a scoring drive. On close plays, there is almost always a little bit of contact and often it seems that it might indeed be pass interference even when it wasn't called because in real-time, it didn't seem like much. So I think we are going to get a lot more debated calls than we have now.

But that might be the price we have to pay to correct really bad officiating.

If the score is tied at the end of regulation, the team with the prettiest helmets is immediately declared the winner, unless of course they are equally breathtaking, in which case both teams are awarded a win, a juice box, a certificate of achievement, and a big, warm hug. Just start an entirely new 15 minute quarter and start off with the receiving team from the beginning of the game getting the ball first.

Curt Gowdy called it "sudden victory." God, I hated Curt Gowdy.

That said, why not have head coaches wrestle to decide the game? Tell me you wouldn't have liked to see Andy Reid and Bill Belichick go at it on a mat with high school rules, or 2-3 falls in a cage match.

Lots of funny stuff on here but getting back to the serious issue, for starters allow both teams to have a possession. In this era of a high-powered offenses, you can’t just allow the team that’s lucky enough to win the coin toss to win the game by scoring a touchdown. You’ve got to give the other team a chance with the ball. If both teams get their possession and both score, and the game is still tied, they each get another possession, and this continues on until one team outscores the other. I probably wouldn’t do this in the regular season but you’ve got to do something more fair in the playoffs than what they have now.

Another option would be to add a 15 minute 5th period (maybe 10 minutes). The teams have to play the full period and the the team ahead at the end of that wins the game. If they are still tired at the end of that, you play another one.

Go to College rules but like I think some one said already, start from the 40 yard line. It would make it tougher to score a TD from there and would give the defense some breathing room instead of the offense being right at the door step.
