Jayden Reed: Pack's Version of Deebo?

GB can use him in same ways as Niners' star.

Ever since being taken in the second round of the 2019 draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Deebo Samuel has been one of the premier triple threats in the NFL.  Not only has he caught 283 passes for 4,122 yards and 19 touchdowns, but the Niners love to get him the ball in the running game.  He has amassed 1,007 rushing yards and 19 more scores.  He also averages 25.4 yards on kickoff returns.

Deebo was a first team all pro in 2021, and the only reason his stats have declined a bit in the last two seasons is because of injuries, and the diversity of weapons on the San Francisco offense.  He is explosive and elusive in the open field and often turns short plays into big gainers by breaking tackles and exploding through gaps.

Do the Green Bay Packers have a player with a similar skill set?  I believe they do.  Jayden Reed demonstrated in his rookie season that he can make plays in all three categories.  Despite learning the pro game on the fly, he led the Packers in receptions and receiving yards, and tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns.  He also tacked on 119 rushing yards and two more scores.  In addition, he led the team in average yards per punt return.

Like Deebo, Reed is often used as a jet sweep threat across the backfield, and he’s good at it.  In week ten against the Chargers he rocketed down the sideline off a jet sweep for a 32 yard touchdown.  Against the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs Reed carried the ball twice on the opening drive.

Also like Deebo, Reed’s team loves to call his number in the clutch.  32 of his receptions, and six of his rushes resulted in first downs.  The two players possess similar speed.  Samuel’s 40 time at the combine was 4.48.  Reed ran a 4.45.  Deebo is a little bigger at six feet tall and 215 pounds.  Reed measures at 5’11” and weighs in at just 187.  But despite his slight build he held up well in his first season, missing only the week sixteen game against the Panthers.

The former Michigan State star also fits into his team in a way similar to Samuel.  The Niners have many other options on any given play, so they can use Deebo as an effective decoy, drawing defenders away from other threats such as Christian McCaffery, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle.  Reed’s speed and route running forces defenses to account for him, opening up opportunities for a range of other options including Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, and now Josh Jacobs.

Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, who faces Reed regularly at practices, compares him to a different receiver.  “I mean, he has full potential,” Alexander said about Reed at OTAs. “He reminds me of a young Randall Cobb. But he’s, I think, you know, he’s better. He’s hungry, man. When you got a young guy coming in who’s hungry for the ball, they’re gonna make their plays. And you see it.”

That hunger and all out effort has not escaped the attention of Matt LaFleur who says “I love the way he attacks the game.”   For his part, Reed says he has only scratched the surface of what he feels he can do.  With a year under his belt, number eleven says the game is coming easier to him.  “Man, it’s night and day.  Just knowing the playbook, leverages, places on the field, just knowing my job, understanding the game and having that confidence.”

As versatile as he is, Reed won’t pout if he doesn’t get the ball a lot.  In the playoff win against the Cowboys, he had not a single catch nor rush attempt.  He’s okay with that.  He says his goal is to win a Super Bowl, that the stats will come organically.  In the meantime, he’s more than content to be the Packers’ Swiss Army knife.

Just like Deebo.

Jayden Reed had a very good season but lets pump the brakes a bit here. He only had 11 carries compared to Deebo who in the past 3 seasons (even with injuries) had 59, 42, 37 rushes. At 205 pounds he is 18 pounds heavier than Reed (and 1 inch taller).

I would think it has yet to be proven that Jayden Reed is capable of "pounding the rock" 40 to 60 times per season in addition to making 60 or more receptions.

Personally I would prefer not to see him take the physical beating that 60 rushes would entail as I like him as a WR and hope to target him with 90 - 95 throws instead.

You will never see Reed used as much or like Deebo. Yes he is smaller. He is a jet sweep and end around guy. He is the guy that keeps the defense guessing. We have RBs that can go up the middle. I agree keep him healthy because he is needed in the passing game as that clutch receiver.

As for being better than Cobb. I agree he is better than Cobb when JA lined up against Cobb but Cobb was older. Cobb when he was young was great.

I have said before when Cobb was drafted I wanted so bad that the Packers would pick him but I also realized that we did not need a receiver. Was I happy when they picked him.

Those were my thoughts exactly when Jaire that.

Prime Cobb is better than Reed right now, however, after their rookie seasons I'd take Reed over Cobb.

Good point. Deebo was also considered a real physical player in college too, with the injuries to prove it. I don't remember hearing anything about Reed being a physical player in college. Reed has his strengths but being mini Deebo isn't one of them.

Agreed. The difference in weight (215 vs. 187) says it all. Reed is not anything like the same kind of running threat that Deebo Samuel is. Maybe we should just be happy that he's a very good young slot receiver who can run the occasional jet sweep.

What would be the point of signing Josh Jacobs if you're going to send Reed between the tackles, it's kind of preposterous. Ken Lass unleashing the stoned in a dorm room scenarios.

The jet sweeps and end-arounds are fine, but don't use him between the tackles like the 49ers sometimes do. You want to keep him durable and healthy, remembering that Reed is a little smaller than Samuel.

Doubs was a RB in high school, if any WR was going to get a between the tackles carry I'd pick him. But I think it's more likely we see Lloyd occasionally split out in some two RB looks than a WR getting an inside carry.

Last year Deebo caught 60 passes and had 37runs. Almost 100 touches. About 1100 total yards and 12 TDs.

Reed, as a rookie, caught 64 passes and had 11 rush attempts. 75 touches, a little over 900 yards total offense, 10 TDs.

Reed is about 30 pounds smaller than Samuel, so I don't see him as the run threat that Samuel is,but as a receiver, he's already there.

Bro 187 was his combine weight, his let me run a fast 40 weight. He's easily closer to 200 pounds now with muscle weight. The fresh out of college combine weight is NEVER WHAT THEY are a season in to their second.I agree though we don't need him pounding the rock like that Deebo has already missed a few games and has been hurt during games just like in our playoff game .But that whole 187 thing. That is so not accurate at this point in his career. All These second year players came in with bigger bodies then when they were rookies fresh out of school

Jayden Reed just needs to be Jayden Reed with a year of experience, that's good enough for me. I think Matt Lafleur is salivated this year with all these WR/TE's going into their second and 3rd years, and a QB that's proving he has a firm grasp on the offense. I believe this will be MLF's coming out party as an offensive mind. GPG!!

Some people's needs to endlessly compare every young player to some other established player confounds me.

As MainePackFan already states.. Let's just let Jayden Reed be Jayden Reed. Love be Love. Jacobs be Jacobs. Etc and so forth.

I have bulked up over the years, why not Reed?

I worked on my six-pack and ended up with a keg!

I have unbelievable flabs now!

More of me to love I guess...

With the Packer RB room so well stocked with power, speed, quickness I don't see Reed taking many of their carries. He and Watson will still get an occasional jet, WR screen, reverse. But with Reed's sublime skills running crisp routes to create separation and maintaining it with YAC...he's best in the Air Force, not so much in the infantry.
