Jimmy Graham is a Packer and Jordy Nelson is Not.

The Packers are making bold moves. Yes I just wrote that.

The news is coming fast and furious out of Green Bay Today.

FIRST THIS:

Packers Sign TE Jimmy Graham to a 3YR Deal after he and Saints could not come to an agreement about money. No word yet on the dollars from the Packers.

THEN THIS:

Packers release Jordy Nelson.

Check Back. More details to come

Maybe they're letting him test the market first? To see if he can make more money elsewhere?

Man, this makes me sad. I know it's a smart football move. But Jordy is my favorite WR since.... oh.... Sterling Sharpe. And Jordy is really hard to dislike (unlike Sharpe).

Release Nelson, Sign Graham at the same time.

Someone who is politically savvy might suspect it was done like that because they felt it was a good time to bury sad news.

I don't think he will be back. Hope he stays on good terms with the Pack, like Driver, he has been a much loved receiver for years.

Why stop there. Cut RRodgers, Goodson and other dead wood. Jordy will be back, but maybe not after he was released. Being one of the first cuts was no way to treat him.

Absolutely. This hardly means it's over for Jordy in Green Bay. It should...but it doesn't. EDIT: I saw the press release...it reads like a eulogy. He's done here. Will be weird seeing him next year in another uniform.

Donte Moncrief just signed with the Jags. We're running out of WRs who can help us. Cobb isn't an outside guy. We have one outside WR worth anything and that's Adams. The next in line is Geronimo. Yikes. That WR1a1b slot looks as glaring as CB to me.

Thrilled about Golden Graham coming to town. Philbin built an offense around Finley when they were here together that ended when Jermichael went down with his season ending injury at Washington. You can bet Jimmy is coming to town and getting the Martellus treatment...meaning he's going to see a lot of balls thrown his way. Let's see if he can catch them unlike Marty B. Let's make sure we have him properly evaluated and documented after every game.

We knew if things were going to happen something had to give. Now, we know. Jordy, the oldest, was up first. I read a Cobb restructure was floated but for now it looks like he's playing it out.

I'm not sad like a lot of people. I guess I probably held the SB game (where he had great stats) against him too much. He had several critical drops in that game that could've killed us like the drop at Buffalo did a few years ago. I hope this is truly the end and we don't bring him back on a reduced rate out of sentimental reasons.

It's nice having something to talk about this time of the year. Those who follow the Packers just for entertainment reasons and don't care a ton about SB's should love this. We're doing things to be different. It may not work but I applaud the effort. Still, I believe Ted wasn't running things last offseason. We spent on a big name TE last offseason, too. I'd like to see money allocated elsewhere before I conclude that things are really different.

EDIT: Terrelle Pryor is still out there. He might be the only guy left with any possibility of being an upgrade for us. One of the rarest of rare guys who looked better in Cleveland than elsewhere. A dreadful season in Washington. He is probably in our price range thanks to that market killing season he produced last season with Cousins.

So you're going to ignore Jordy's phenomenal stats over a 10-year career and single out a couple bad games as reason to be happy he's gone? why?

We'll see on Graham. He's old and not a seam threat like he was in NO, but maybe as a redzone weapon he can replace Jordy. For all our sakes it had better work out differently than the Bennett deal.

His bad games were not the direct result of a bad QB. I just can not agree with that, it's not that simple.

Do I think Jordy can still be a productive WR somewhere? Yes, I do, maybe for a year or two. I think age and injury are taking their toll though.

And not to sound like a broken record, but there were a number of plays I saw last season where it looked like Jordy gave up on routes before the whistle blew.

I'm not ignoring anything. He had a fine career here. I never felt he was a prototypical WR1 but he was just good enough to ensure we didn't go get one. Big players play their best in big moments. Again, his stats in the SB look fantastic but if you remember the game he made several costly errors and I said I've held that against him where you haven't.

Never said I was happy he was gone. I'm just not sad like many who felt a personal connection to him. I never did. It was time to move on and I am happy to see that Brian was able to.

Now, perhaps, we can get the type of WR who won't be taken away in big moments. Feasting in the regular season is good but we need a guy who'll dominate when it's showtime. One who is a truly matchup proof. Our WR corps could be stifled quite easily over the last several years because we didn't have a true star in the group. Maybe, it's wrong to fault Jordy but I saw him as an impediment to a superstar. I wanted to see Aaron get to play with guy like Megatron, Moss, Julio, someone like that. Jordy was never close to being that guy. You can quote me stats during the regular season but he wasn't like them. Favre had Sharpe. Aaron needs a Sterling type.

Jordy in the playoffs had one 100 yard game (the SB where he had critical drops)...the next best was his 8 catch 79 yard performance in the blowout win at Atlanta.

OK JK, I gave you a token thumbs up for honesty!

I like the objective look at downside, but a true evaluation has to be balanced by the upside as well, which you gloss over like his accomplishments were worthless.

Adios Jordy, I always liked you.

Why do you think I thought his accomplishments were worthless? He got every ounce out of himself that was in there. Made some incredible sideline catches. He had a unique chemistry that nobody else will ever have with Aaron. Not Davante...not Graham. Nobody. There isn't enough time for that to develop. Aaron will never be a young guy growing up with a WR like Nelson ever again. He put up some huge numbers in several seasons. I don't think he was a scrub...he was an excellent player. Obviously, will be missed in all kinds of ways not just on the field.

He wasn't a favorite of mine. He was for a lot of people. I feel a disconnect to what many are feeling or felt as I'm assuming people are over it by now.

I hope Jordy goes out and puts up 1500 yards next season with 15 TD's and has the kind of year Favre had in Minnesota when he got there. I hope he shows all of us he wasn't washed up. I like the Packers team and don't think I've ever been sentimental over the loss of anyone save for maybe Reggie White. Jordy was a reasonable sacrifice to make to try and get better. I'm super excited to see who Brian has in store to replace Jordy.

The Packers got significantly better with this move. I like Graham better than the unproven flash in the pan that is Trey Burton (good luck with that, Chicago...heard of Ladarius Green?). The Packers went from a "D-" at TE to at least a "B". Graham will do fine in GB and provide the red-zone production that Nelson would have been counted on to give and maybe more. They need to find an in-line guy, now.

Now: how do you fill the void at WR? Draft? Sign a lower-tier guy (not many left...Jordan Matthews, maybe?)? I'm not a believer in Geronimo Allison...if they elevate him they'll be less than what they just cut except salary cap room. I think Davis is destined to be no more than a ST guy. Clark? I think it's draft...

Gotta be the draft, I think. They're certainly not going to go after any big-name receiver, and there are plenty of fast young wide receivers to be found in the draft. If the Packers are going to the well on another established veteran in free agency, I'd expect it to be at corner.

I'd say we went from a "F", dobber.

Lardarius Webb, DRC and Amukamara are still out there. This is the tier of guys we're going to end up with, or Tramon Williams. I feared the fix of 2018 would look like the "fix" of 2017 with a low rung FA and a high draft pick. If they take Jackson at 14, I'm going to lose it. There is as much need for a Courtland Sutton as there is for a Josh Jackson and I think Sutton is the superior player.

88 can always go out wide if need be. Wait! We still can sign Janis! :) Is Trevor Davis, Michael Clark, Yancey, ready? You can't leave Aaron with the WR corps as is. It's awful. Adams, Cobb and Allison? Ugh. I'm sure someone is coming but I doubt it's a WR from FA who is worth anything. That puts so much pressure on the draft with way too many needs.

Prepare to get very low level FA fixes perhaps at not just one but several positions so we don't go into the draft needing everything.

Have to agree thus far, but I'm still holding out hope that they sign a Tier 1 impact FA. Another year of relying on a draft pick to make an impact. Yuck. We haven't hit on a single major impact player other than Bahk, in nearly a decade and now we need to hit on 2 or 3.

I wouldn't be surprised. Rodgers, I am sure, will give up some of his cash to keep his old reliable friend. Yeah, Jordy dropped some uncharacteristic passes last year. The opponents D took away a lot of the field when they new Hundley was QBing....Jordy was a victim of circumstances. I personally hopes he makes it back. Not only do I think he has some ethyl left in the tank, but Jordy has always been a classy, stand up guy!

HOLY CRAP!

I wanted a TE, but one who could run. Jimmy Graham is not that guy anymore.

I wanted a WR purge (or substantial pay cuts), but I would have guessed that Randall Cobb was the one who would be cut, and not Jordy.

ARod has to be not happy. He gets Graham (whom he wanted) but he loses his favorite WR ever when he could still play in the middle of the field.

Incredible. This is a ballsy move by Gute. I was thinking he'd have to purge to get a top CB or Wilkerson... maybe he still will....

I wish Jordy the best. Sad day.

I agree with you Bear. This is a Holy Crap moment for all of us.

Same as you, I thought Cobb would get cut. Not Jordy.

Personally, I think it would be better to draft Goedert, or Hurst, or Gesicki, than to get another over-the-hill FA TE. I guess BG could still draft a TE, but I'd rather spend the money we save on releasing Jordy to pay for a different FA.

I feel it's too early to criticize BG. My attitude is wait and see until the draft is over. By then we should have a good sense of BG's vision for the team.

I just don't get it. IF you are going to spend serious money on a TE, why the one who can't run anymore? I mean, Jordy is a great possession WR out of the slot and a serious RZ threat still. To me, this is just replacing a 33 year old slot WR who can't run anymore with a 32 year old TE who can't run anymore. Shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic type of move...

Why not go for some speed? Either at TE or outside. That's what we need on offense (and let's not even touch the D with a 10 ft. pole right now). By the way, Moncrief is gone. Robinson is gone. Watkins is gone. Richardson is gone. All the veteran speed guys are now gone.

We are running out of options. Davante is the only good outside WR on the roster. The only not sucky one actually....

Word this morning is, they asked Jordy to take a pay cut at the 10 year veteran level, which is 1-2 million. He refused the reduction and pay, so the Packers made their move.

Who knows if this is 100% accurate, but it doesn't seem right they would completely cut ties with a guy like this. Great team player, fan favorite.
Truth be told though, he was not the same guy last year, and just didn't have much left anymore. I also saw a guy that didn't play with any joy, the smile was gone on his face, and I think he knew he didn't have it.
Looking at the body language told me he was done.

Maybe davante is the only PROVEN outside WR on the roster.

Remember, a year ago, it was hard to find a Packer fan who thought Davante was even a marginal talent at WR, much less a starter. Some still argue he isn't any good.

My point being, there is young talent on the roster that may or may not be good outside options, we as fans don't really know, there hasn't been much opportunity for these guys to really get on the field long term. And, there's always the draft.

I agree Bear! I would much rather have kept Jordy than Cobb or Graham! I was really happy after we got rid of a bad attitude and got a top QB to be a backup and eventual starter. Now, Gute just knocked the wind outta me. I’m not gonna panic but, we’ve added 2 offensive players and no defensive players! However, looking at the numbers that are being handed out, I’ll pass on early free agents! I guess it’s a bit annoying because I don’t see his big picture plan yet. I’m a nosey one and I like to understand what’s going on. I guess I’ll just be waiting like everyone else but, it has to weigh really heavy on the rest of the veteran players!!! If Jordy can be cut, how secure is my job? Maybe that’s the big picture plan of Gute’s... do not let players feel a sense of roster entitlement and keep them hungry! If that’s his plan, it’s working so far!

He ran a 4.59 coming out of college at 6'6" and 265.
Even if he's under 4.7 now, he's still faster than Richard Rodgers whom I could beat in a foot race. (Not really joking)
Was he the best available TE? If the answer is yes, then it's a good signing.
Particularly good in a passing type offense like GB.
If you look at the numbers, this is like the Keith Jackson signing at similar points in their careers. Both 31 too.

I had a similar thing happen with one of our dogs. Got him from the rescue shelter in February and named him Raji, and low and behold, Raji retires a few weeks later. I told my wife I'm glad we didn't name him Rodgers.

In my mind, Nelson simply HAD to be cut or take a huge pay cut. Maybe they sign him back, but honestly I thought he was truly awful last year.

I don't know what to think about Graham until I see the numbers. Kinda nervous that we may be paying premium coin for an older, oversized receiver who can't block and has never really been a tight end.

Not sure about the Graham signing. I live in the NW and IMO he really never panned out in Seattle. Injured quite often as well. I really think Seattle would like to have Max Unger back. Anyway, wish Graham the best with the Pack. Sad to see Nelson leave, but it’s big business.

I like where your head is at. Love Jordy as much as the next guy, but its time for some much needed spring cleaning. out with the old and in with the new (slightly less old?)

One of three things will happen for Jordy.

-Will resign on a team friendly deal, maybe 2yrs/$10M
-Will retire a Packer

Or...Big Bad Bill Belichick will do his thing.

as long as he doesn't end up in minny, I'm ok. I don't think they can afford it, since they've still got two holes in their o-line. But if he signed some ridiculous 2 year/6 mil contract they'd be superbowl favorites for sure.

With all the cuts around the NFL to get under the cap. The packers may have made a bigger mistake. Creditability is everything. Clay should not take a cut. He'll make more with his next club. The money that is being thrown around, justifies clay would be dumb not to try the market.

I'd rather have the Packers making the right moves on players at the right time--and I think this qualifies--than holding on to players too long and counting on them playing roles they just can't fill anymore. Every team does this, and it's not a function of the teams, it's a function of the CBA and how guaranteed money works. Like it or not, loyalty is a standard of a long-gone time and unless the CBA changes, this tactic will not. Tell me which team out there that cuts bait for cash has a hard time signing FAs? Love Jordy, love what he's done in GB, but this was the right (but painful) move.

Jordy will land somewhere....Lord I hope it's not to a division rival or the Cowboys. Maybe he comes back with an incentive laden contract. Graham has been beat up a bit the last couple of seasons, but you can't judge what he did in Seattle and convey that to the Packers. Way different offenses, and way more talent at QB in GB. Gute is showing some balls and I like it.

A hard business decision but one that needed to be made. One pass-catcher in, one pass-catcher out. Even if Graham isn't what he once was, he's still light-years better than what the Packers had last year at TE. Expect Cobb to get the axe if the Packers bring in a WR ...although Moncrief was just reported to have agreed on terms with Jax, and there's not much left out there in terms of FA that are unaccounted for.

It's possible Nelson will be back at a lower cap number, but the Packers are already on the hook for $2.3M in dead money. If that's what they wanted, they could've extended him and helped themselves (and Nelson) out some. I don't expect him back.

I agree Dobber. My heart tells me their negotiation isn't done, but my mind says if they wanted this they would have done it under contract. Jordy's days on the outside are done, is there room on the roster for essentially two slot players in Cobb and Graham, much less four potential players that will run in the slot in Nelson and even Montgomery if he bounces around more? I don't think so personally

The frenzy at the opening of FA is always a ridiculous mess.

Still, teams are ponying up big chunks of cash for offensive players while comparably fewer defensive guys are coming off the board, yet. This could play in the Packers favor.

The $2.3M proration is a sunk cost. Cutting him makes Gute's stats as a GM look bad because it gets listed as "dead money" but that $2.3M was just as dead if it is incorporated into an extension as it is if Jordy's cut and later re-signed. Dead is dead.

Jordy is one of those rare kind of guys. He is a cult hero in GB and just solid all around. He is a Packer through and through. I expect that there has been some talk behind closed doors we don't know about but he does. I think GB is still interested but needs to see how things play out in FA on the defensive side of the ball first. With that in mind, Jordy may be resigned a bit down the road to a reduced contract.

Who do we expect to make next year's roster at WR so far. Adams, Cobb, Allison, Clark and maybe someone we draft. That's five. Janis and Davis should both be gone. That leaves Yancy as the only other potential option. Lots of room left for Jordy to come back.

My heart is very sad, but my head know this was the right move. As much as people knock Cobb, he's still very good at creating separation underneath. I know a lot of people wanted Jordy in the slot, like Fitzgerald, but the problem is that Jordy's not Fitzgerald. Nonetheless, I hate to see him go. He's one of the classiest, most humble and down-to-earth guys I've seen in the Green and Gold. You'll be missed Jordy. I thought we might resign him, but the presser from the front office seemed pretty final.

As for Graham, I'll reserve judgement until we get into the season. Honestly haven't watched him play much (either in NO or SEA), but I'm cautiously excited for a rebound year.

Certainly tough to see jordy go, had a hell of a time here in GB. With that said I think the writing on the wall was there was a good shot he was gone. While Jimmy has shown to be a beast, and a tight end that can work the middle of the field can make a world of difference in an offense. I’m still hesitant that this is a for sure signing. My biggest concern is who is lining up at WR2 across the field from Adams? Geronimo Allison?? I might like him more than most, but that is a concern. Almost all impact speedsters that we have speculated on are gone. And on the other side of the ball who the hell is going to play cornerback? We might be going into next season worse than we were this past season. All top guys on the market are gone. We’re gonna get another Davon House type stopgap player along with an unproven Kevin king and another rookie (probably at 14).

It will be interesting to hear what Aaron Rodgers is going to say about this.. and you know he's gong to say something about this at some point.

Not that I think it matters, he gets paid to QB, not be a personnel consultant.. but I'm pretty sure Rodgers thinks he needed to be consulted. Who knows, maybe they did.

Perhaps this isn't such a bad thing after all.

If Rodgers has one criticism its that he takes a long time to trust a new receiver --> hence he can be predictable (although its one thing to see Babe Ruth pointing to the bleachers, its entirely another thing to stop him hitting you there ----- same for Rodgers).

Perhaps it also says that the Packers have a renewed faith in their run game...... although this is still untested.

This personnel change will definitely add some unpredictability to the Packers offense, and teams will have to re-think how they defend them.

This shake up may not be a bad thing.

People don't need a photo graphic memory to know that only ONE FREE AGENT SIGNING since the start of NFL Free Agency has turned a franchise around and to the Super Bowl - the Packer's signing of Reggie White. Check out the stats below that sums up quickly the HUGE difference in perceived value of free agents on the 1st Official Day of Signing. Also note that Richardson is coming off an ACL in last years season opener and Watkins has had multiple stress fractures of the same foot (see UW LB Vince Biegel).

Jordy Nelson: 53 recs, 482 yards, 6 TDs (cut)
* Played most of the year with a horrible QB.

Sammy Watkins: 39 recs, 593 yds, 8 TDs ($16 mil/yr, $30 mil guaranteed)
Paul Richardson: 44 recs, 703 yds, 6 TDs ($8 mil/yr, $20 mil guaranteed)
* Played all season with Pro Bowl QBs.

Jordy was my favorite Packer, but he'd lost more than 'a step'. Lot's of people here wanted change, let's see what happens next. Gute is definitely putting his GM stamp on the Packers right out of the gate! I tend to agree with the opinions above about Jimmy Graham being underutilized by Seattle, not because I watch them other than games against the Packers, but from what I've read from others asking why he wasn't used more after the Seattle trade. It just seemed like a strange trade. I wish Jordy the best; he's a classy guy.

Sad to see Jordy go. He has been a great Packer and ARs favorite target. I hope that Gute has a few more FA moves as I would hate to lose Jordy and only sign Graham. Maybe Jordy gets back to us on a team friendly deal, who knows?

Graham will improve our TE position group but I was hoping for TE with speed to run down the seam. Graham will be effective on 3rd downs and in the red zone but we still need a TE with some speed and now we need a WR to replace Jordy.

It's still early in FA and the draft is 6 weeks away so let's see where Gute goes next. It looks like most top tier FAs our signed already, especially WRs and CBs. Thanks, Since '61

Jordy still has something left and will prove it by being signed by another team and for more money. This is is the opportunity the franchise gave him. I want to see it like that because otherwise it sure looks like he got fired for being too old. How cold and then turn around and go pay a bundle for an old injured TE. Sorry to see Jordy go. Best of luck to Jordy.

I absolutely love all the comments on wishing Nelson well. A-Rod will have to throw to Graham. Because Adams still won't be as good as nelson was. What a insult by the packers to offer him league minimum. Especially after the Heist Adams pulled off. Retirement? Lined up are NE, Raiders, bet clev and NO. That sure does put that to rest. And now were going to have a 40 million dollar Qb with no reliable hands to catch his balls. The West coast offense is back. Throw it to the backs and TEs. And lets stay with the question marks. A-Rod this is your neighborhood and you just lost your best friend! So lets pat our selves on the back. Relax, and watch the balls hit the ground. I hope the defense can show up.

Adams now is better than Jordy now.

Sorry. True story.

I have a feeling that Adams will eclipse Jordy at his peak some day as well.

I know I'm in the minority. But Adams can do a lot of things Jordy never could. If Adams and Rodgers get on the same page like Aaron had with Nelson.. look out.

Adams will never be as fast as Jordy was in his prime, and that's the big determining factor of impact with the 2 players.
I like Adams, but he can't get down the field and split coverages like Jordy once could. He's a number 2 receiver all day.
GB still needs a number one.

As I've mentioned to other people, I guess he's a #2 WR who is leading all NFL receivers (even the #1s) in TD's over the last two seasons.

If that's what a #2 WR does, I guess I'm all about finding more #2 WRs

You are right, Adams isnt as fast as jordy, but he's quicker and more sudden/explosive, has better change of direct skills, (these first two things are why he gets more separation than Jordy does) has some of the best body control in the league, and has a larger catch radius.

So, yes, Adams can do things Nelson never could.

I'm with Fin on this one. Have never been a Davante guy, He doesn't have the finer points of the position down like Nelson did. He can heavily outjump Nelson. Nelson had a paltry vertical of 31" just like Ridley this year which is causing a lot of talk about him not being the best in this class. Davante had a 39.5" vert. That's 8.5 inches better. 3 cone was heavily in Adams favor 6.82 vs. 7.03.

Their speed wasn't that different. Both 4.5 guys. I read Nelson ran between 4.47 and 4.56, the latter was Adams combine time. Adams can contort and jump. Probably a lot stronger than Jordy, too. So, athletically, Davante is a better specimen. He's just not the WR Nelson was...yet...and probably won't be.

Davante is going to struggle mightily without a big threat opposite him. Cobb and Graham aren't enough, I don't think. Montgomery could help.

The TD thing is overblown, imo. He's never hit 1000 yards and has maxed out at 75 receptions. He should be putting up Jordy's best numbers this year for what he's being paid and I don't think he will.

Time will tell. Adams' production year-by-year in the league compares very nicely to Jordy's first 4 years, even with Adams' all-but-lost-to-injury season.

Side note, Jordy's speed is deep speed, and there's high-4.3 CB's out there that will tell you he ran faster than whatever the stop watches said.

No question Jordy is far faster on the field than Adams.

Allison scares no one, and Cobb only flashes right now.
They need another receiver in this offense to get behind the safeties.

I feel GB is taking a page out of Bill B's book i.e. better to get rid of a player 1 year to soon rather than 1 year too late.

That's actually Ron Wolf's book, and the Packers have been doing that with players for quite a while now :)

Jordy had been targeting the Patriots prior to his release that he knew was imminent. That's per PFT.

Can't wait to hear his answer on which 12 is better?

So looks like its a 3/30 deal for jimmy. Was hoping gute struck a more affordable deal, rather than making him the highest paid TE in the league. Guess well see if hes worth that kind of money

One of my gripes with Ted is he never made us better...he just swapped out guys to keep us the same. Jimmy Graham IN, Jordy Nelson OUT. Are the Packers significantly better now on offense? Cook should be the TE. Now, we're paying more for Graham and WR corps is a mess.

I like the move but I always wanted to see FA used to enhance our roster not just as a replacement tool in close to even swaps.

Dont like this move at all. As much as I liked Jorday, I can understand he was too expensive, they need money and he had to go. But what they did with that 10m money ? Sign slowfooted TE, (his yard per catch in 2017 were less than R Rodgers) with big name, and now most of their money for FA is gone to J Graham. Really ? I admit Graham will probably still be good in endzone, around 10TDs. But he never was a speedy middle of the field target.
