Jimmy Graham suffers broken thumb

it sounds like the Packers big ticket free agent will be out for some time.

The Packers were bit hard by injuries once again last night, incluing losing tight end Jimmy Graham just before halftime.

it sounds like their big ticket free agent will be out for some time with what NFL Network is reporting is a broken thumb.

Does it really matter how much time he miss.

Forget about the time...does it matter period. Could go down as Gute's first big mistake.

There'll be time for this in the offseason, but Gutekunst made a number of football decisions and I think it's fair to point out that some of them didn't work out as well as we'd hoped. Wilkerson got hurt, now Graham. Meanwhile, I think we kind of miss Jordy in the passing game. We certainly miss the three safeties he's sent packing (Burnett, Dix, Whitehead), especially with the injury to Brice.

Jordi's season in Oakland is pretty forgettable. Those traded/released safeties aren't lighting the NFL on fire either. The Packers haven't done well with TEs, and they haven't done well with injuries. I'm ready to shift into "next season" mode, looking forward to the roster and (hopefully) coaching changes that Gute puts in place. Go Pack!

Did you mean substantial or insubstantial?

It is 6th highest on GB and 9th highest among TEs in the NFL.

Graham is still a good player. But right now, he's a hurt player. He's under contract for next year and there'd be a big cap hit if we cut, or traded him. As a receiver, he's our best TE.

Cobb and Matthews will both be released into FA. Nick Perry will still be too big of a cap hit to release and he'll be back next year.

And if I recall, most of the comments about Kyle Fackrell for the last year have been in the nature of "sucks balls and should be ridden out of town on a rail". You know that's true.

We have plenty of talent. We are not losing games because of a lack of talent; we are losing games because the talent isn't playing together well. It's a team game.

Perhaps TGR can enlighten us on the cap hit if/when Graham is cut. The way it looks to me, if they cut him after this season they would save a couple million dollars ($7.3 million in dead cap space from his remaining guaranteed signing bonus, but savings of around $9 million from salary & bonuses).

Regardless, Gutekunst will have to decide if he is worth around $13 million in cap space if they keep him on the roster next season.

Near as I can tell...

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/jimmy-graham-6603/

...Graham has a cap hit of a little over $12.6M in 2019. If they cut him, the dead money is about $7.3M in 2019 (if they do so before his $5.3M roster bonus kicks in).

Boy, for all the talk about Gute being so great spending other people's money, he's not looking so great at spending other people's money. Wilkerson and Graham are both wastes hemorrhaging money for little return. People can criticize TT all they want about the past couple drafts but at least when Ted did go after a free agent the guy usually worked out. Gute threw lots of darts and most didn't even hit the board. He needs to be more fiscally responsible going forward. I think this first year taught him a very good lesson when he sees all the dead money from these recent bust signings. Graham and Wilkerson will not be back next season. So long!!

Who cares. It was a dumb signing when it happened. Jimmy can't run anymore. He's overpaid and doesn't scare anyone.

Cut him after the year. Roll with Tonyan, Lewis and a draft pick with upside.

It seems the...Cut/ don't Cut and the Sign/ don't Sign trays in the FO have been switched.....could it really have been that easy to fool those in charge all this time?

I don't know the answer to that question. Probably MM? Seemingly, it hasn't fooled Gute. Dude has not messed around with cutting people.

I think the dumb part is in the fact that they signed a TE who doesn't block to play under an HC who doesn't scheme to get the TE the ball very much as anything aside from a checkdown. He didn't have a real role in the offense as it exists. BG got MM a piece, but he hasn't used it. Even slow TEs out there make an impact if you give them a chance. Finley was the last TE the Packers really tried to get the ball to downfield. RRod caught over 50 passes in 2015, but was catching a lot of 6-yard checkdowns. Cook benefitted from catching passes when the WR room was a MASH unit. I wouldn't discount the fact that a new offensive mind and scheme might better use Graham, but I wouldn't bank on the fact that he's much more than a safety net at this point in his career, either.

I for one would LOVE to see more 6-yard checkdowns on third and five!

Play Tonyan and have him targeted 5-7 times per game. He’s 6’5” with good hands and speed. Rodgers needs to hit him over the middle when they need 3-4 yards on 3rd down...and just MOVE THE CHAINS to keep drives going.
Rodgers cleary lost that game when he took sacks drive after drive while the Packer defense was getting tree and outs on Seattle at the start of the second half. Rodgers got 1 FG and that’s it the whole second half. Not gonna win without scoring TDs but Rodgers played the QB position terrible the whole second half. It sure was frustrating to watch how inept the Packers offense was with their defense giving them every opportunity to win. Rodgers is way over paid and over rated as an NFL QB and that why they never beat good teams anymore...nor will they...as long as he plays so poorly maintaining scoring drives. He’s just pathetic to watch at this point miss open receivers, hold the ball, take sacks, and make poor decisions on 3rd and short! ENOUGH!!

I'm not a fan of watching him pout after plays either, especially when he's the one missing the wide open, uncovered underneath routes. He sure can throw those youngings under the bus, too.

Sure you can pin this loss on that terrible Rodgers throw. Or you can blame the offensive line for not blocking in the second half, McCarthy for not attempting to run the ball, McCarthy for not attempting to go for it on 4th and two, injuries across the entire defense, numerous phantom calls and calls that should've been and weren't, the fact that the Packers played in Seattle; one of the hardest places to win on the road; the fact that the Packers are 0-5 on the road and 0-4 in Seattle and we all know how bad the Packers are at breaking streaks like that, I could go on and on. There were plenty of reasons the game was lost. The #1 that all of them have in common aside from the penalities and injuries, is Mike McCarthy

Graham was not making a significant contribution anyway. Give the snaps to Tonyan and let's see what happens.

Al - a rare spelling error, check your lede, should be lead.

Thanks, Since'61

Since '61, Actually, "lede" is correct here - per Merriam-Webster, "In journalism, the lede refers to the introductory section of a news story that is intended to entice the reader to read the full story." (I learned this from reading Ask Vic, FWIW.)

M.Lewis is a waste, because the never pass to the guy. I mean 2 completions in 9 games.

What a freaking joke. Fire MM.

He's not Gronk. I'm not sure what you expected from a guy that the Packers dusted off the FA scrap heap late.

70 catches, 1,000 yards, double digit TD’s sound about right? (I bet he could get that in Madden.)

Graham has just been a Bennett redux. Trying to appease Rodgers with “another weapon probably cost us the chance to get Mack! A bonehead move by a brain drained front office. What made the Packers formidable in the past was a well oiled Management team that was the envy of the league. What once was a well oiled machine has turned into a rust bucket windmill on a dust bowl tundra. Brace yourself Packer nation because this once proud franchise is taking a step back to the 8O’s.

Brace yourself Packer nation because this once proud franchise is taking a step back to the 8O’s. (You can even go back to Bart Starr.) I still don't see a shut down defense. The questions still keep going with injuries. Defensive busts put us in the hole. And now we have a QB that can't win on the road. The time for learning is over. The rookies have to take the next step. Burks is still playing behind Morrison. Adams must produce on the DL. The fright is new coaching. Gute/MM/Pet must change this defense. It's only a plug in the dike. Until they change the front of this defense; will keep getting picked apart. I'm a believer of selling players now. Go back to the 4-3-4. Burks was the wrong pick for it. Gute is staying with the old formula. Yes pet has done better. But it's only stop/plug. And when a GM stays with the old. It's going to take us back.
