Jordan Love and Romeo Doubs Creating Chemistry at OTAs

OTAs are more important for the 2023 Green Bay Packers than they have been in recent seasons. While practices without pads can only tell coaches so much about a player, a young team like the Packers needs as many reps as they can get together to develop chemistry and cohesion.

One duo that has shown strong early signs of chemistry is quarterback Jordan Love and wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

“The rapport that those two guys have shown throughout eight practices now has been pretty solid,” LaFleur told reporters this week at OTAs.

The duo hooked up consistently during two-minute drills and throughout practices. It just seemed that whenever Love needed a key completion, the player he looked to first was Doubs.

This is a critical season for both players. Love is finally getting a chance to be the starting quarterback after learning for three seasons behind Aaron Rodgers. There is a lot of pressure on the former Utah State star but thus far, he has handled it well.

Love also did a good job of dealing with the difficult situation of being the heir apparent and backup to Rodgers while the future Hall of Famer’s disagreements with the team’s front office often played out in the media.

Love has continued to work hard and has shown up to all OTAs. He’s even demonstrated leadership by organizing a passing camp with some of his young receivers (including Doubs) and running back Aaron Jones on his own during the offseason.

This is Love’s fourth season in the NFL but his first as the team’s starter and he knows all eyes will be on him throughout this season.

Doubs is entering his second season in the NFL. The Nevada alum looked very good as a rookie at OTAs and training camp and led the Packers in catches during the preseason.

His work ethic and determination to learn the playbook helped him get off to a fast start in 2022 including a career-best eight catch, 73-yard performance in Week 3 against the Bucs that also saw him score his first career NFL touchdown.

Unfortunately, injuries slowed Doubs at midseason, and he still wasn’t 100 percent when he returned. He finished his rookie campaign with 42 catches for 425 yards and three touchdown catches in 13 games.

Love and Doubs have been working together since Doubs joined the team a year ago. They really do seem to have a good feel for the way they like to play the game.

Love was quick to praise Doubs when asked about him during OTAs. “When in doubt, you know you can throw it out there and he's going to make a play,” Love responded when asked about Doubs. “He's done a great job of going to get the ball wherever it's at, has made some really tough catches. And it kind of just builds everybody's confidence, builds my confidence in him, just being able to throw the ball out there, and know he's going to make a play.”

The Packers recent history has been full of quarterback/receiver duos who have had an uncanny feel for each other. Brett Favre and Sterling Sharpe were setting records in the early ‘90s until Sharpe’s career was cut short by an unfortunate injury after the 1994 season.

Favre later found chemistry with Antonio Freeman and Donald Driver who had Pro Bowl seasons and made a big impact on the passing game.

Rodgers had an uncanny connection with Jordy Nelson and finally with Davante Adams. The back shoulder throw between Rodgers and Adams was almost impossible to defend because the two of them could change things with a simple nod or a glance and they always knew what the other was going to do.

Obviously, Love and Doubs are just at the beginning of their development as a duo. They have yet to play together in a meaningful NFL game as Doubs wasn’t on the roster when Love made his first NFL start in 2021 and he was injured when Love played the fourth quarter against the Eagles in Week 12.

Still, it has become clear that this duo enjoys working with each other, is developing trust in each other and is off to a strong start.

Every day they work together at OTAs only seems to improve what this duo has when they work together. That is an encouraging early sign for the 2023 Green Bay Packers.

It's good to have a go to receiver. Just know the D is going to go to him too. Then, flip it to Watson or someone else for the big gain.

You bet...and some else like AJ, AJD and a young TEs open as Doubs draws attention elsewhere.

Correct, Gil! No room in the receiver room or on the field for a cheap veteran FA taking snaps from the young talent and their QB.

Everybody loves the big superduper runsfastjumpshigh guy, but that possession receiver who keeps you on the field is a big part of an offense. Hopefully, Dobbs can be that guy. His rookie year saw some time missed with injury and some unfortunate drops, but he also flashed a little. If he can be that guy, great, and if not, maybe Reed or Toure will be.

Or all of them will. Spread it around and make me a happy camper. Five players with 5 catches each. The D will decide who gets the rest if it's not all runs.

It doesn't work that way Steve. You want the ball in the hands of your studs. For us, that's Jones and Dillon for about half the plays. Then you have your big gun, Watson, that you want to use. That's about 42 of our 62 plays.

That's what is left of the pie. We usually throw about 6 passes/game to our TE, so that brings it to only 14 plays remaining for all the other WRs. You'd hope they catch 10 out of the 14. I'm hoping Doubs and Reed cover most of that.

I know LH, but a guy can dream. Unlimited playmakers with a surprise one every game.

I've never had a team with unlimited talent. What I always hope is that our best players carry the load and the other guys chip in with some timely contributions, but mostly don't make mistakes that cost you the game.

When you have too many choices, it can work against you. Better to know what you're going to do, and do it.

LH, "when you know what you're going to do and do it" the good teams are going to know you're going to do it too. KC managed to work all their offensive weapons in at different times (lots of new faces and youngsters last season). Notice how in the playoffs MVS had a surprise turn out game against the Bengals (I think) when they were limiting or took away the other guys? He'd only been used before for an occasional deep shot or two like we'd used him in GB. Our problem in the playoffs over the years is that we couldn't flip the switch and have something saved that we didn't use, or seldom used like the great coaches seem to do. Great execution goes a long way, especially during the regular season, but against playoff caliber teams, you have to change it up.

Those teams seem to hold back even if it means they might lose a seasonal matchup. We always seemed to have the 49ers number during the regular season (hard fought), but nothing different to show them during the playoffs (hard fought too).

LH that's why we need depth. I'd love to see them all train like Jerry Rice and become superman, but either of these top two could go down at any time, God forbid. Who knows which WR may be called on to step up ...

but generally I'm hoping to see sparing use of QR, at least at first.

Bill Withers - we aaall need, somebody to leeeaannn onnnn!
I'm glad that jlo has somebody and I hope if he learned anything from previous years qb1, you need to be able to trust more than just one guy.
Start from a position of trust, then build up from there. One drop cannot break trust for multiple games.

It is nice to build that relstionship, but Love will need to find another 2 or 3 pass catcher so if something happen, he can continue to have another go to guy.

Doubs can be a big part of the offense and likely a great security blanket for Love but make no mistake, this offense will run through Watson and Jones. Many plays will be for those guys getting touches. Watson is going to be targeted heavily. My prediction, early in the season this offense will go through Aaron Jones, By the second half of this season, the offense will be going through Watson.

I'm hoping TE takes up a bigger part of the plays than we've seen for a while. Dink and dunk to YAC guys, then take the long shot when a WR is wide open. As they develop pinpoint accuracy start throwing into tighter windows when you have to, but this will have to be very different than we've seen in over a decade.

I like the potential of the Jordan Love/Romeo Doubs duo and it reminds of a successful duo the Packers had years ago with two youngsters who developed together. Brett Favre and Sterling Sharpe terrorized defenses from 1988 -1994 as a quarterback/receiver duo until Sterling suffered a career ending injury.

Thanks for pointing out my error. Sterling came on board in 1988, four years before Ron Wolf traded to get Favre from Atlanta. I remember watching Favre's first game in 1992 when he came in after Don Majkowski got injured. He threw his first TD pass to Sterling Sharpe and then threw an exciting TD pass to a lesser known receiver for the Packers to win the game, but I can't recall the receiver's name. That was really an exciting game.

At the time of the trade with Atlanta, I thought the Packers had made a mistake giving up a 1st round draft choice for Brett. I'm glad to have been so wrong.
