Jordan Love suffers shoulder injury in Texans game

The Packers quarterback injured his throwing shoulder toward the end of the first half.

Jordan Love's debut showed lots of promise. Unfortunatley it was cut short due to the hit he took on the strip-sack toward the end of the first half.

From NFLN:

Regardless of how serious this injury turns out to be, expect the Packers to sign another quarterback. Possibilities include Jake Dolegala or Blake Bortles making a return.

Love finished last night's game completeing 12 of 17 passes for 122 yards, with1 touchdown and 1 fumble.

If the Packers are still the way they have been with injury updates, I'd expect the strain to become something else and then something else again. Not hoping for it, but the history of how bad injuries seem to be worse than the prognosis as days turn to weeks. Next thing we know, the preseason of Love is over.

You're a piece of work indeed. Very typical reaction from you. Packers may as well forfeit the season. You can start looking forward to the draft and total rebuild already :). Oh, and fire the front office, because they are bums not really interested in success. Let's see, what else is going to hell.

Really, take weeks for an injury to be diagnosed! I know your not being serious, but com on, the Packers are no different than other teams regarding reporting injuries. My recollection is they always state, we don’t have any update on an injury till they have good knowledge of what an MRI provides them, whether that be a day or a few days. The media might hype an injury, but I don’t recall the Packers ever doing so.

Would you rather them state a doom and gloom assumption then find out after an MRI it was a minor strain?

I didn't say the Packers hype an injury, I said they play it down, and then the bad news comes slowly, and then we get told that the insignificant injury has the player out for weeks or to IR. This is the Packers operating procedure.

So, give me examples of them playing it down as you say. As I stated, the way I recall any situation with injuries, is they report, we don’t have enough information and will tell you more upon getting reports from their Physicians or the MRI results. That normally takes a day to a few days for results to be reported.

I hope so. But every practice that he misses at this juncture is critical in his development, and just as importantly, critical for MLF and Gute to evaluate what they have in him.

The toxicity with 12 is untenable past this year anyways. But it'd be nice to be confident in the future when he's sent to Siberia.

I see a bit of Favre in our young quarterback and I "Love" it. Favre played through a great many "dings" and worse to set a consecutive game start record that I think will stand forever. I'll never forget the game he played against the Bears with that sprained ankle.

I think Jordan Love would have to be handcuffed to the bed to keep him from taking the starting snap next week.

Actually, I see more Favre in Benkurt. Or should I say a bit of Majic Man. I’m excited to see what we have with him. He went from exceptional to Oh NO in a flash. It will be interesting to see if we keep all 3 and not expose him to the practice squad.

I think Love is more of a pocket passer, albeit with only a half to watch him, and based on his college work, I’m sure we will see more scrambling from him.

Love impressed me with not scrambling, which is what young QBs tend to do when forced through progressions under pressure. I want scrambling to be limited to designed plays and when it really matters. That’s not preseason.

Packers are making a mistake by not protecting their future QB. OL is basically made up of second stringers, with 5 rookies in the mix. Individually those 2nd stringers may be "OK". However, not only are they 2nd stringers, but they also have not consistently played together.

Surrounding your future with lessor players, against the Texans who played most of their starters, is asking for trouble.

The OL overall was pretty poor. I'm not sure why anybody is singling out Nijman, a young player on a very cheap contract.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrOgoOQ148w

This video shows all of Love's passing plays. Nijman did get beat outside on the fumble but even including that I count zero plays where "he almost got love killed." I thought he was generally solid in pass protection. Most of the pressure on Love came from elsewhere, either guards getting beat or blitzers not being picked up.

I pretty much agree. Nijman got walked back once but stayed between the rusher and Love. Nijman also got beat in 2.3 seconds and again in 2.6 seconds on the strip sack.

I have Runyan beat in 2.3, 1.9 and 1.95 seconds. I have Kelly beat twice. I saw free rushers two or three times, usually on passes designed for a TE in the flat. Patrick had a slow recognition when a DE lined up over the LT stunted all the way to the RG slot and got past Patrick who was free and saw him coming late. That's 9 out of 17 pass attempts. Myers looked fine, though he was only one on one perhaps three times.

As a note, Runyan moved to center with 12:54 left in the 2nd. I didn't see any issues with Runyan in pass pro. Braden came in at LG and I didn't see any issues with Braden at LG.

The video clip does not show running plays.

Last night's grades:

Defense - F
ST - F
Offense - C

Of course it's the pre-season and many of last night's players won't make it to game 1 of RS. So what matters is individual performances. And there the Pack did much better.

Defensive players with a positive grade - 8
Offensive players with a positive grade - 5

The other 13 or so players were rather sucky, including three/four of whom are projected as likely IOL starters.

Can Oren Burks continue to play like he did last night??? If so, he's like found money.

You realize that we were missing 30 of our top guys, so you’re grading mostly guys who won’t be on the Opening Day roster? It’s the first scrimmage of the year.

We got 11 guys lined up on every play.We didn’t have a ton of penalties. Our team core didn’t sustain any injuries. Trust me, I’ve seen a lot of scrimmages that weren’t as good as this.

I thought Slaton looked interesting early but gassed after half time. A lot of work for some guys they presumably want training film on. I’m a little less down on Nijman than some, other than the sack play. I thought Kelly was worse and Runyon got moved around too easily too. Meyers and Patrick were the only ones that seemed worthy. If that’s the best we have, a lot of wasted picks and we still need a swing tackle. I think part of it has to be time playing together, but if Runyon is penciled into start at G, that film on rewatch isn’t good.

Houston has a pretty bad OL, but I agree on Burks. He will never be a sideline to sideline coverage LB bit he showed something this weekend getting into the backfield that he previously hasn't. If he's truly a one trick pony I'm not sure that's enough to make the final roster, unless he can also translate that downfield running into more ST production.

Those who ride the Love Train should take note of JLo's terrible throwing motion. Not quite Philip Rivers, but hardly Marino or Namath. (I could also add AR12 but he seems to be able to throw 50 yds by flicking the ball while leading backwards and putting weight on his back foot so he is clearly an outlier in that regard.) When Rodgers is gone n 2022, I'm not sure his detractors will find their saviour in JLo but with developing QBs there is no accurate means of predicting future performance levels until the QB sees regular season action and even then it may take the better part of a season to know the player's true ceiling.
