Josh Boyd Making the Second-Year Leap Along Packers Defensive Line

Packers second-year defensive end Josh Boyd is taking the second-year leap, just like his head coach predicted.

Almost 150 selections after the Green Bay Packers called Datone Jones’ name in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft, general manager Ted Thompson used the second of his two fifth-round picks on little-known Mississippi State defensive lineman Josh Boyd.

While Jones continues to battle nagging ankle injuries, Boyd—an important reserve up front—has begun taking the second-year leap that head coach Mike McCarthy predicted he’d take back in February.

"I think Josh has a flexibility. He's shown he can play the nose and he can play the three-technique," McCarthy told Cheesehead TV's Brian Carriveau from the NFL scouting combine, while the Packers were still deciding on what to do with the likes of B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly. "So I really like what Josh gave us as a rookie, but he needs to take a huge step, a big step. And I think he'll be one of those players that does that in his second year."

The 310-pounder started at right defensive end Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. He played 25 snaps, marking the fifth-straight game he’s received at least 25 snaps along the Packers defensive line. Employed mostly in the base defense, Boyd flashed disruptive ability for the third week in the a row.

In fact, there’s an argument to be made that Boyd has been the Packers’ best defensive lineman since the bye week.

According to ProFootballFocus.com, Boyd has nine “stops” over the last three games. The football analytics site considers a stop to be any tackle that constitutes an offensive failure. Eight of Boyd's nine stops have come against the run, which is tied with J.J. Watt—yes, that J.J. Watt—for second most among 3-4 defensive ends since Week 10. On the Packers defense, only Clay Matthews (10) has more total stops during the same stretch.

The Vikings struggled to stay in front of No. 93 Sunday.

On Minnesota’s second offensive play, Boyd blew off the ball and bullied his way into the backfield. The run to Jerick McKinnon went the other way. Had it been to Boyd’s side, a sizable collision might have occurred behind the line of scrimmage.

His next snap came on the first play of the Vikings’ second series. Initially knocked to the ground by right tackle Phil Loadholt, Boyd picked himself off the turf and stuffed McKinnon for no gain. A play later, he stacked and ripped the right guard, flashed inside and nearly put a hit on Teddy Bridgewater before he released a quick throw. Boyd finished off the drive on 3rd-and-22, when he spun off the block of left guard Charlie Johnson and tracked down McKinnon after just five yards to force a punt.

The Packers reinserted Boyd on the 4th-and-1 during Minnesota’a third series. He used a swim move to maneuver around Loadholt off the ball, bounced off fullback Jerome Felton and nearly tripped up McKinnon behind the line of scrimmage.

Later in second quarter, Boyd hand-fought through Johnson’s block attempt and ended up in the face of Bridgewater as he threw a quick slant.

On Micah Hyde’s sack in the second half, Boyd muscled past Pro Bowl center John Sullivan and was in Bridgewater’s lap as Hyde made the takedown.

Maybe his worst play of the contest came in the third quarter, when he was late getting off the ball and the Vikings blocked him out of his gap—leaving McKinnon room to run for 10 yards on first down. His handful of empty snaps were typically the result of slow get-offs or effective double teams. But he still fought for stalemates against two blockers, hustled to the ball on every play and found ways to get into the backfield, all while playing all three positions along the Packers defensive line.

Per PFF, Boyd finished Sunday with the highest total grade on the defense (plus-1.6).

Boyd may never be a difference-maker at the level of former fourth-round pick Mike Daniels. And he’ll likely continue to play behind Jones, the first-round pick, and Letroy Guion, who has made his share of plays this season. But Boyd’s emergence recently has given Green Bay another effective option up front, which no team can ever have enough of—especially as winter approaches and stopping the run becomes more important.

The departures of Pickett and Jolly, an early injury to Raji and nagging ankle issues for Jones have opened the door for Boyd to play important snaps. He’s making the most of them this season, all while proving both his general manager and head coach correct.

I like the trajectory of the Packers defensive line. Guion is working out, Boyd and Pennel are ascending, Daniels provides the leadership. The additional athleticism was a good move. I'm looking forward to watching these guys for the next few years.

Agreed on the upward trajectory. Guion offers a "starter" at a reasonable price with leadership, Daniels plays like the "Tazmanian Devil", Boyd has exceeded all expectations and Pennel has the tools to be the player Boyd is this year. Datone Jones arrow either goes up or down next year, he has to show or go, the same message they gave Worthy. The most consistent defensive lineman in the last 10 years was undrafted free agent Collin Jenkins, all the more reason to watch the UDFA's Thompson will sign at those positions in the spring of 2015. Give the coaching staff credit, the big bodies from the last 3 years failed to pressure the QB when it mattered most and stopped being stout against the run late in the seasons so they changed the plan.

Nice story and Boyd is indeed looking like he has made a good 2nd year leap.

Wish we could say the same for our oft-injured 1st round pick.

If you draft a linemen late in the first round you're really not getting top quality. Better to look for safeties, tight ends, inside linebackers and other less premium positions.

When Datone overcomes the nagging ankle injury, our line will have a very diverse group. We have our run stoppers and pass rushers, to go along with a good group of olbs. We're a nose tackle and mlb from being an elite defense, when healthy.

Datone has been a nagging underachiever for almost two seasons. --- I wouldn't be shocked to see him go the same route as Worthy if his year three (next season) is just more of the same.

Datone has struggled when injured, not because of being lazy like Worthy.

Worthy blew out all 3 ligaments in his knee in late 2012 - then lost his only good influence in TC in 2014. I hardly think that qualifies as 'lazy'. He might not be a good player (IMO he should never have been drafted by a 34 team - his true position is a 43 under DT). But he's not lazy.

Maybe being lazy wasn't the direct reason, but he definitely had motor issues. Combine that with a tough injury to overcome and we saw the events that unfolded.

You're correct. --- Facts are facts.
But you're being too selective. It's called cherry-picking.
Elite QBs are elite because they pretty much defeat just about everyone. Not just the Pack.

Those aren't facts. The only "elite" QB's are Rodgers, Manning, Brees, Brady, and Luck. The "good" tier includes Wilson, Romo, Roethlisberger, Rivers, and Ryan. The "better than average" group includes Stafford, Cutler, Tannehill, Alex Smith, Dalton, Flacco, Newton, and Kaepernick.

So, quit pretending that "better than average" is elite.

I'd say the elite category is only Rodgers, Manning and Brady.

And am I crazy for thinking I might prefer Roethlisberger to Brees or Luck? I'm talking today, not past or future.

Also, Kaepernick = Tannehill.

You're right that Luck is borderline elite, but perhaps not quite there. Roethlisberger is also borderline elite, but he'll never get there. Brees might be sliding a bit, so he may or may not have dropped out of the elite camp. Earlier this season Brady seemed to be slipping, but that was clearly temporary. The same could be true for Brees.

Interesting question: If the Colts offered you Luck in exchange for your current QB, would you take the trade? I think every team except the Packers would make the deal.

100% agree. And the Packers would have to really think about it, just because of age/salary considerations.

True. They'd have to really think about that one. BTW: regarding Kaepernick. The Niners would trade him for Wilson in a heartbeat. Kaepernick is not elite.

A Boston radio station, hmmmm. You've never been to a Packer game and you're not a fan. Just another weasel troll stirring the pot. You'll be history after Sunday. Your record for predicting games this year is 3-8, you've picked the Packers to lose every week. No Fan of a team does this. Quit lying, stfup and take a hike.

Pats are a good club but for the fans of New England to laugh at anyones schedule is a joke. They play the easiest schedule year in and year out. This year is the first year in many they've actually played a tougher schedule. BTW, Wilson or Kapernick are so far from elite it's pathetic.

I agree that Boyd has improved, but I wouldn't call it a jump or leap. I certainly don't think he has proven that he can play NT (unless he is showing that in practice, I see no evidence at all that he can play NT). He is a pretty decent situational player whose pass rush has also improved. Bottom line is that his play is important to GB since Datone has again not been healthy, and even when healthy, Datone does not look good against the run. Boyd has a pretty good motor, too. As a note, give the players and coaches credit: Daniels, Guion and Boyd all have good motors.

These last 3 games Boyd has really taken a step. He has played really, really well..

I brought this up on twitter a few days ago, that he is a player that has really stood out to me. Actually last Wednesday I asked Brian and Nathan to see how Boyd was grading out the previous 2 games, because i noticed that he was really playing well.
