Larry Johnson? Please God no....

The Larry Johnson trade rumors just won't seem to go away. First, we heard that the Packers were looking at the disgruntled runner in the lead up to the draft, but nothing happened. Then we heard George Koonce intimate that the Packers were getting ready to add a 'big name' offensive player. Then a Milwaukee TV station reported that someone in the organization had maybe once thought about drafting Larry Johnson in their fantasy league.

Enough already. If Ted Thompson isn't willing to pull the trigger on a 4th rounder for Randy Moss trade, why in the name of Travis Jervey is he going to trade what would almost have to be multiple draft picks and pay a TON of money to sign a player that is coming off one of the most punishing in NFL history for a player at the running back position?

Thompson has spent three off seasons tearing apart the roster and accumulating draft picks in order to build the core of the team, which Sherman had let rot in hopes of one last Super Bowl for Favre. He hasn't taken all this time and taken untold amounts of heat from the media and fans to now turn around and sign a disgruntled running back with a million miles of wear on him. He just drafted a running back, Brandon Jackson, with a second round pick, and if the last three drafts have told us anything, draft picks are worth more than gold to Thompson. Trading for Johnson at this point would certainly be an admission that the second round pick spent on Jackson was a wasted pick.

Making a move for Johnson would be just about the dumbest, most idiotic thing Thompson could do at this point anyway, having not seen Jackson take a single snap in pads, or the rest of the offense for that matter. The fans will cry and moan of course, but that doesn't make them right. Now if Jackson or Vernand Morency suffer an injury in camp and Johnson is still holding out in Kansas City, all bets are off. Both Kansas City GM Carl Peterson and Thompson would have incentive to do something at that point. But for now, Thompson should stand pat and see what he has in camp.
