Lions 15 Packers 9: Game Balls & Lame Calls

Bottoming out.  It can't get any worse than this, can it?

55 seconds left to play. Packers trail the Lions by six points. Green Bay has the ball first down on the Detroit 17 yard line with two time outs remaining. Detroit has one of the worst pass defenses in the league. Would you like your chances of your future Hall of Fame quarterback getting the ball into the end zone for the winning score?

Normally, yes. In most years. Not this year however.   Maybe not ever again.

You almost have to be trying to lose to the Lions. The Packers saw the window of opportunity to win this game open up time after time, yet they just couldn’t make it happen. It reminded me of the Cleveland Browns a few years ago. Year after year, the Browns would play reasonably well against most opponents, but would always find a way to make just enough mistakes to lose. They were just being the Browns, I would smile and say. That’s what they do.

I’m not smiling any more. Now it’s what the Packers do. They have found a way to lose five games in a row. They have talent. They make some big plays. But in the clutch, with the game on the line, they play with absolutely no confidence they can win. The expressions on the faces of the players on the sideline say it all. They are stunned. In disbelief. They have tried everything, put it all out there, and it isn’t enough. Something is missing, and they have no idea what it is. They are certainly not going to get the answers from their coaching staff.

Blame it on injuries, or bad officiating, or unlucky breaks, or ineffective coaching, or a fading quarterback, whatever you like. The bottom line is, the Packers are just not enough. They have eight games left to play, and they are likely to be underdogs in every one of them. Deservedly so. They just lost to the worst team in the league. There will be better days ahead. Just not this year. Not with this team.

GAME BALLS

Allen Lazard

I don’t know if Lazard is a true number one caliber receiver, but it’s clear he is Green Bay’s number one receiver. Playing hurt, the former Iowa State star led the team with four catches for 87 yards and the Packers’ only touchdown. His back shoulder grab for 48 yards to the one was a thing of beauty. He nearly had another outstanding catch on an underthrown long ball, but had the ball just brush the ground on his way down. He plays hard with great effort, but every time he goes down, I hold my breath because it looks like he’s hurt.

Jaire Alexander

He’s not flawless. He makes mistakes. Throwing Tom Kennedy down after the play was over, costing fifteen yards, was just plain dumb. But he also had a huge pick that should have turned the momentum in Green Bay’s favor. He missed another one by a hair. At least he makes plays. At least he shows a little fire out there. If the Packers had 21 others like him, they would not be on a five game losing streak.

LAME CALLS

Aaron Rodgers

I suppose there will still be fans who will claim that QB12 has not declined. That the fault lies in the futility around him. But his personal deterioration has never been more evident. I could cite many examples from this game, but the one that says it all is the fourth and goal play from the one yard line, as Rodgers rolled right, then looked left to spot a wide open tackle eligible David Bakhtiari. It was an easy touchdown. Except Rodgers somehow threw the ball woefully short and it was picked off in the end zone by Aidan Hutchinson. There were underthrows, overthrows, low throws, you name it. Give him credit. He used his legs to pick up a couple of big first downs. But the difference-making plays just don’t happen any more. There is simply no way the Green Bay Packers can win a game with their signal caller playing this badly.

Penalties

The beat goes on. Killer penalties in critical situations. Jaire running into the kicker nullifying a missed extra point try, Kingsley Engabare getting a big sack nullified by a blow to Jared Goff’s head, two offensive pick penalties on the same drive, Nixon called for defensive holding after it appeared the Packers had gotten a stop on third and fifteen. Any team can have a bad game once in a while, but this happens every week. It has to come down on the coaches sooner or later.

Just Bonehead Mistakes

Rodgers throwing the ball off a Detroit helmet on the goal line, Sammy Watkins runs the wrong route in the end zone, Jaire throwing Kennedy down after the play, Krys Barnes called for helmet to helmet hit, bailing Detroit out of a holding penalty. In tennis, they call them unforced errors. In football, coaches love to call them mental mistakes. And they love to say they are correctable. So why are the Packers not correcting them?

THREE AND OUT

-- I can’t help but feel for Christian Watson. The guy just can’t get a break. Every time he gets healthy enough to get into a game, he gets hurt again. I thought his run after the catch on his first grab was impressive. That was a nice crossing route for his second reception as well. But he left after that play with yet another concussion. Sure hope that, at some point during these final eight games, he gets a chance to truly show what he can do.

-- You’re dreaming if you think Matt LaFleur is going to bench Aaron Rodgers and play Jordan Love, now that the season is pretty much down the tubes. You’re not going to pay a guy $50 million to sit on the bench. Plus, Rodgers would poison the locker room, as if it’s not dysfunctional enough already. Perhaps Love gets into the game a little earlier than normal if the Packers are being blown out, which certainly is a possibility considering the quality of several of their future opponents.

-- Have you noticed how Aaron Rodgers has regressed back into the habit of throwing the ball while falling backward? It robs him of arm strength and accuracy. It’s what got him into so much trouble back in 2017 and 2018. I thought LaFleur and Hackett had bred that out of him, but maybe his lack of confidence in his offensive line has him fading backward again.

Got a text from my friend the Bears fan, it actually sounded like he was feeling sorry for me as a Packer fan.

Of course after the Bears lost but their QB looks like an up and coming Superstar and they have a ton of picks and 100 million in cap space. He knows even though the Bears lost, they have hope and a positive outlook for the offseason and next.

The Packers are broken, injured and getting older by the minute with no salary cap relief in sight!

It is going to be bad for awhile boys.

"The Packers are broken, injured and getting older by the minute with no salary cap relief in sight!"

"It is going to be bad for awhile boys."

And the thing that pisses me off to no end, to actually not have ANY hope for the Packers for this year and the next few, it IT DIDN'T HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS!

My only hope lies in this. Rodgers either retires or is traded to perhaps the 49ers. Yes, I know that would maybe put the 49ers over the top, but then again he'd probably refuse to handoff to Christian McCaffrey too.

My point is this. TAKE the dead cap hit as soon as possible. I thought is was something like $99 million but someone thought is was closer to $60 million if he's not on the roster next season. Whatever it is, whenever it is, take it ASAP. Clean house, take the hit, and start fresh as soon as you can.

Personally, I think thise team could be better with Love starting. That might F Up my plain for a top 3 pick, but at least we'd know EXACTLY what the Packers have.

Absolutely. Rip the band aid and begin the process of rebuilding. Slowly bleeding over the next three years and then rebuilding in 2026 is a far more painful process.

Aaron is an 8 life path...8s are typically well versed in money, power, and karma. Nary a year has passed and KARMA is coming soon to Soldier Field and Mr. "I fu*kin own you, I've always owned you" could be humbled and humiliated.

Then again, he may not get the chance as Love auditions and dances with Gute under the spotlight.

Its going to be a long rebuild..rebuilding can be kind of exciting.."IF" the team has the draft picks and cash avail to go get some missing pieces...unfortunately the Packer are screwed as long as they have to pay Rodgers and Bak, these two take up an enormous amount of Packer cap and cash...plus, would Gute even use the draft correctly?? A long cold winter has come to GB...

100%

The worst part of a rebuild is the denial phase before the rebuild begins. And as many teams have shown, rebuilds can be quick if done correctly. Unfortunately, 12's cap hit and the track record of current leadership doesn't give me hope for a quick one.

Game Balls:

No one

There are some players that deserve some mentioning. Alexander, Quay Walker, Toure.

The defense played really well honestly against a team that had scored a ton of points at home. The Lions have been one of the best scoring offenses and the packers held them to 15 points. Should have been 2 less, because the penalty on Alexander was a joke. Pure flop by the kicker which allowed them to go for 2.

But losing to the worst team in the league (record wise), there are no game balls

Lame Calls:

Rodgers -
This maybe Rodgers worst game as a pro. Or one of them for sure. If he doesn't throw 1 of the interceptions they possibly Win. I get he doesn't have the weapons he needs. I get guys are getting hurt. I get the run game was not effective. But Rodgers has to be the best player on the team regardless of who he is throwing it to.

Injuries -
They likely lost 1-2 or more for the season. Gary's injury looks like a torn acl to me. (just saw on Twitter it is a torn acl) Stokes injury they said was too gruesome to show on replay. Watson with potentially his 2nd concussion in a week. Possibly they shut him down. Jones and Doubs were in walking boots after the game. Just ugly injuries all year.

Three and out:

- The season is over! There is no coming back from this.

- Toure made a hell of an acrobatic catch. He is a guy that needs to get a lot of playing time down the stretch. He has really started to look good the last few weeks.

- Enagbare looks really good. Really, really good find in the 5th round. With Gary out for the season, Enagbare should be getting tons of opportunities. That roughing the passer play was unfortunate. He reaches out and the QB starts falling down and hits him in the head. Not his fault.

The powers that be have got to take a look at that and revise that rule. Seeing a flag when a defensive players hand grazes the QBs helmet is ridiculous. I'm all for protecting the QBs, but most of these calls are just a joke!

There needs to be some sort of common sense with crap. In this play the QB is going down and he barely hits him. Sure its in the head, but is that as bad as the one play where Rodgers gets spun and thrown down which wasn't called?

I think they need to have a confirmation from above on these plays. To many of these are game changing penalties. Especially when they are ticky tacky calls. This one definitely could have changed the game, had it not been for Alexander intercepting the next play. But this was a 3rd down play the Packers got a sack for but the penalty gave them an automatic first down.

EVERY PLAYER GOES THROUGH THE UPS AND DOWNS. Thats life in todays NFL. The frustration has effected the Spirit.
If you tell me Rodgers is worthless. I will disagree. Where are the RED ZONE threats he needs? Where was the stability along the OL.
Nobody is working together. And if you look at the Bitch since day one. Any team with a good TE can beat this Defense.
Games are won and lost in the trench. Rodgers has had No control over that!

Would never say Rodgers is worthless, but yet not remotely close to his current contract value! The throws he missed yesterday, were very out of character for him, and not throws that can be blamed on the receiving Corp. I just can't picture him playing a couple more years! I love the guy, as I did Favre, but I'll afraid the time has come for something different??

I've enjoyed watching Rodgers for his time in GB, he's pulled out many games that they should have lost and overcame poor coaching for many seasons, but its time for him to rethink coming back next year...him and Brady and a couple other should ride off into the sunset, the young guns who can run and pass are the answer now...better watch out for the Bears, they seem to be rebuilding the right way, Fields is getting better every game...

You're saying a wide-open Bakh is not a redzone threat? All he had to do was throw a decent ball and it's a TD. He didn't...

AR12 has thrown 90 percent of his passes this year off his back foot. He's stepped into maybe 10 throws all year. That's on him and Tom Clements.

Looking at the schedule we could easily lose out the way this team is playing. Yes, we could win a couple, but all Gutey's stupid decisions have come home to roost and it's time to pay the ferryman.

It may take 3 years to overcome all the stupidity of the last 3 years. Only time will tell.

If the Lions add a D, they are likely to be better than us for some time. It will be very interesting to see if we were what their D needed to get confidence and to start rising.

Chicago is delirious about their new RGIII, but I think we will be their rivals for the bottom and they have already started their pain and rebuild.

Fundamentally agree with you Stockholder. Whether it is on offense or defense, there is very little cohesion between the players. We can barely get set before the ball snap let alone get people to execute a play design. Yes there are missing pieces and yes we have injuries but guys not knowing where to go or who to cover points right back to coaching.

Some creative schemes may help, but Tonyan's body has taken any quicks from his game. Deguara should be part of the plan and run out of the I formation with power sets. The O line is pitiful. Hockenson should have been the target for Gutedkunst. He dominated yesterday in D.C. Players, not Plays.

We have one guy that can do that in Toure. Doubs to some extent, but there are ankle throws and ankle throws. Ones behind lacking velocity are the worst kind, and that’s what we’ve seen a lot of. Doubs was injured early and Toure an afterthought till the second half. Lazard needs balls higher, but his contested catching is impeccable.

Rc you and everyone have a point. But Gutey keeps trying to trade for a TE? Rodgers loves Lewis. So use him. The success has been with Tonyan. And Gutey hand chose Deguara. Yet Bahk is a Target.?? Seems like LeFluer is sending the wrong players in the red Zone.
Then there is Dillion. - Another hand chosen by Gutey. Why didn't they give him the ball 4 straight times?
And use the players that are better run blockers? Isn't that LeFluer's solution? Running!
Rodgers lost Dobbs. No WR knows how to jump. And Gutey didn't want to trade up for Claypool?
Add it up. LeFluer/Gutey have destroyed the chemistry with Rodgers. Adams ,MVS, Turner, St.Brown, And Patrick. All left for money. The Offensive coaches left. Where is the stability. The IR? PS?
Rodgers is going down. And it's just a act of survival to take others with you.

Isn't ar12 the guy that can't trust 1st and 2nd year NFL wide receivers enough to throw them the ball?
Why in holy f _ _ k is he throwing to a LT that is so badly injured he can't practice and can only play 1/2 the snaps on a Sunday. . . . as a LEFT TACKLE!
If MLF called that play, on 4th and 1 to win the game, fire him right now!
IF ar12 called that play, or didn't reverse it in the huddle or line of scrimmage, set his butt down right now. This show has got to stop as soon as possible.
Stick a fork in us, we're done for the year.
I will enjoy watching all of the remaining games to see who on the roster is truly a professional and will continue to try to carry the G!

And here lies the problem, at least PART of the problem. MLF is the HC of the GB Packers. He SHOULD do what he thinks is the best for this team, both now AND in the future. IF, they actually believe they can salvage this season, then add delusional to the long list of what is wrong with this team.

Rodgers, he IS THE POISION in the locker room. Every week on McAfee, throwing teammates and coaches under the bus, but NEVER looking at himself. There was a time I felt like Rodgers was a decent leader, and actually liked him. That time is LONG gone. The $50 million he gets shouldn't even be part of the equation, not when he plays as badly as he has and refuses to point a finger or look at himself. I KNOW it's a business and when you pay a man that much he'll play. But this team has NO CONFIDENCE in him or themselves. I'd imagine some of his teammates could really give a damn he's "Aaron Freaking Rodgers". To many he's some over paid old man who is really stinking up the place week in and week out!

Lastly if Gute has EVER had a bit of control over this team and it's not Mark Murphy tieing his hands at every turn, then it's Jordon Love time. He made the draft pick, it's TIME to get an extended look.

Go watch his interviews or read a source other than the foaming at the mouth opinions we get here on CHTV instead of just latching onto the first thing you see that justifies your own misguided opinion.

""Rodgers (23-of-43, 291 yards, one TD, three INT, 53.5 rating) gave credit to the rookie defender for a nice play, but was not so complimentary of his own outing.

He knows it. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t change anything anymore than LaFleur’s no traditional blame assumption post game.

Rodgers was bad yesterday but he certainly cared. In fact he probably tried too hard. It reminded me a lot of the last phases of the Championship games. If we had a Head Coach to ensure that was channeled we might have win a couple of Super Bowls. We don’t and that’s the bigger travesty and tragedy.

So, the guy FINALLY said he played "crappy", gave some credit to the defender. He actually gives credit to defenders fairly often. What he doesn't do is take responsibility.

From game one. We saw Rodgers was pissed with the product. He's not going to make this team great, by playing for Nothing. Every player he needed has left. The persuasive thinking that Love is the answer! " Is the poison." Why is Gutey trying to trade for a TE?. Why was Reed/Lowrey a better solution? Why were they trying to trade for Claypool?. Why was this OL an experiment?. Why was Bahk a Target in the Red Zone? Who is physical ,on the Defense? Rodgers has taken way too many chances this year. He just isn't going to finish like he use too. ( Until they fix the question marks first.) Rodgers knows the Packers must start over. The sooner Murphy realizes that. Rodgers will be the Comeback player of the year.

When the Lions drove down the field effortlessly on the first drive, exploiting the Packers' porous run defense, and then went empty backfield on 4th and 1, I thought, "Hey! We've got a chance! This is the Lions!" Jared Goff was awful, but Aaron Rodgers was worse. I wonder if the announcers are actually under contract to refrain from saying anything negative about star QBs, because Greg Olson attributed Aaron Rodgers' first interception to "bad luck" and the second one to an amazing play by the defender, when both of them were clearly the result of pathetic throws. But then, Olson is the king of ass-kissing announcers.

Yes, Rodgers does often seem to be throwing the ball while falling backward, even when the protection is decent, as it was for most of this game. It is like 2017 and 2018 all over again, except this time he's not actually trying to get the coach fired. At least I don't think so.

I noticed the same thing. If you're doinking the ball off of a defenders helmet who is trying to get low against the Oline you're not experiencing bad luck, your trajectory is off. I'm really curious to see how this all plays out - is it the thumb, or has his play really fallen off that much?

Alexander's "game ball performance" cost his team 8 points. He was a Lame Call on Sunday.

Emblematic of Barry losing the locker and just sloppy, soft, undisciplined play which has been his brand his entire career:

1. To end the 1st half, with the O giving the Lions the ball in Packer territory, I said "here is where Barry's D plays soft all the way to the end zone. I won a cookie.

2. As the Lions were driving for their 2nd, game clinching TD in 2nd half and just got a first down...Barry's entire D was standing around looking at the sidelines and each other, hands on hips...so the Lions went hurry up and easily ran past the clueless D for another first down. TD followed.

Barry, Menninga, Drayton, elevating Stenovich and Butkus to levels of incompetence, letting his flat tire QB drive the O is all on LaFleur. The collapsing organization is all on Murphy.

Although it seem Murphy probably meddled in those coaching failures too as LaFleur is timid and cowardly.

If you score 9 points in that defense, our defense is not the problem. That’s just the cold hard facts. It doesn’t mean it’s not a problem, but by now it should be clear that the real issues are both wider and deeper.

I want to say this. There is very small number of people who recognize Father time catch them and, after that recognition, act accordingly.

Signs are here. Finally, many fans recognize that after this game. No, it was not starting in 2018 or 19, it started 2020. First slowly, than more rapid every year. Favourable schedule gave Packers 13-3 (2 times) and 13-4 record more than quality of the plays Packers presented. Result was early play off loses.

It is not that we can't see ACR sometimes remind us of his precise, on spot throws. It happens from time to time. But, going further, that throws will be more and more rare. Similar to the unprecise throws that came more and more often.

Arrogant persons will not admit that they need to change to be able to use their knowledge and experience to stay on top. They will blame everybody else for their failure. Until they will not be able to find excuses for themselves. That moment will be the sadiest moment in their lifes.

I saw that. In other sports. When true stars falls over the cliff. Examples are some soccer stars like Christian Ronaldo and Leonard Messi. That happen to everyone. Some experience that earlier in their lifes, some later. But it always happen.

With ACR, I have no doubt that Father time is accelerated because of his injuries. Every significant injury leaves consequences. Those consequences are not visible immediately, especially when you have body young enough to compensate those consequences. But, by age, they start to play more significant role in activities.

We can now lament about mechanics of the ACR throws, runs and other things (like scanning the fiekd, vision issues etc), the result is what it is. Isn't it, the Idiot? Yes, the one who said: "We are not idiots!"

Being an old geezer there was one champion to this day I highly respect for understanding what your saying. Marciano, heavy weight champ in the 50's. He quit as champion 20-0 undefeated and never came back. they tried to get him to fight some re-maches and he said no, he had enough, nothing else to prove.
To this day he is the only one I know who did that.

I don't disagree with Father time eventually catching everyone, but you fail to acknowledge Aaron has been given little to no chance to develop any rhythmn with a capable, consistent supporting cast. If that was the case, we'd likely be 6-3 not 3-6. Watkins & rooks running wrong routes, dropped balls, balky knee Bahk catching passes? Those underthrown end zone balls...no rhythmn...things are so FUBAR right now, even the best get shook.

The OL has been a mess. Myers is the only one to start every game in the spot he is in. Look at yesterday alone. They Finally have their preferred 5. Then Runyan gets hurt and Tom goes in for him. Then Bakhtiari is out in the 2nd half and Tom goes in for him. Thank god we have Tom. He is also another great find.
But our OL is a disaster.

Same as WR. Watkins is horrible. Honestly he needs to be cut. Lazard is a good 3/4 WR in the league. Cobb has been on IR. Doubs is good but got hurt on the first play yesterday. Watson hasn't been able to stay on the field. Its just been a mess.

The entire Packer Organization is disorganized and directionless by going in multiple directions all at once.Murphy and MLV need to go at minimum, possibly Gute and Ball as well. This is unfixable at present and there is a strong possibility of a 13 game losing streak to end the season. Injuries are mounting, frustration is mounting, and morale will be the next casualty. I expect a lot of fan favorites will not be back next year.

--The pass protection was good, but the pocket closing in and receivers not getting open is making AR jittery in the pocket. Even Gott was getting rid of the ball quicker.
--Yes, a couple of times RBs missed the daylight on runs, but the missed blks on a few running plays are puzzling and getting our backs destroyed.

Inconsistency with the O line and injured WRs has wrecked the rhythm and timing of the Offense. That is obvious for any knowledgable fan. A veteran coach has to rally the squad and lay down the rules of engagement going forward. If LaFleur comes out with wet powder on Sunday, he should be walking on eggs. As noted, Rodgers mechanics show a lack of practice time on the fundamentals. Just like with tennis or golf. Pound the ball on Dallas and control clock, because McCarthy will send his RBs at Barry's soft run sets all day long. Those who stay, endure.

1st down on the 17 with 2 time-outs. Why do they have to go to the end zone 4 times in a row when all they needed was a first down to start with. Keep moving the chains and then get a touchdown.

As I said in an earlier comment, they played it the way the Lions wanted. They only used the endzone and not the whole field.

Bring on the well-rested Cowboys.

I said with 4 downs at the 17 with 2 timeouts that this was a test of who is in charge of the team. Do they go for a first down or play hero ball with 4 long passes into the end zone?

Answer: It is not The Flower in charge. Hero (Zero) ball run by a twilight QB again lost the day.

Playing devils advocate here but they weren't having success running the ball (or doing much else for that matter) and once you get that first down close to the goal line the defense is bunched up with less field to cover. That last throw to Watkins was one Adams would have come up with every time, and a receiver running the right route would have at least had a shot at.

Isn't embarrassing how easy other teams make it look? Especially make it look easy when they're playing the Packers.

Don't get me wrong. The D did a good job yesterday, just not on short yardage or goal line. For the last 5 weeks for that matter.

"Isn't embarrassing how easy other teams make it look?"

I don't know that I'm embarrassed but other teams do make things look easy that the Packers make look hard - like catching a pass, any pass. I wonder how much of that though is us looking closer at the Packers when they play. I watched the KC/Titans game last night and I was a little shocked that KC receivers didn't catch every pass Mahomes threw. Little tongue in cheek there but he did throw some really ugly wobbly passes that his guys grabbed like they had super glue on their hands.

Being out of the area (Vikes at Commanders was my televised game) I listened to the broadcast, so was spared seeing this in real time. As much as this team has been hit with more than its share of injuries and some bad luck, I must admit that a lot of this "L" falls on Rodgers. This is hard for me to admit, as I remain one of his biggest fans, and I will still tell you that he's the best QB I've ever seen (in many years of following the NFL).

Rodgers went many seasons without throwing any of the red zone INTs we saw yesterday. It was weird to see, and I freely acknowledge that the Oline has been unsteady this year, we don't have very good TEs (with Tonyan not 100%, and he's not that good, anyway, just good for a Packers TE) and who knows who will actually line up at WR...#3's at best, although one of Doubs, Toure or Watson may become very good. Still, unlike the previous 5 losses this year, I have to give a lot of the blame to this one on #12. No longer, seemingly, can he make 6-10 or 7-9 talent into actual contenders, or even a winning time...unless they suddenly...improbably...discover something.

Still, it's hard for me to believe that the two-time-defending league MVP has suddenly lost it. And, you don't bench the 4-time MVP and two-time defending MVP, even after a very tough game. Maybe, you do so after their 8th or 9th (?) loss, but not now.

Here's the thing, and I'm surprised more people haven't made this connection more often...

Rodgers is an elite weapon. He's like a finely tuned Ferrari. If you want to see some of the best football that can possibly be played, he's possibly #1 in line all-time.

The thing about a Ferrari is, it has to operate in pristine conditions. In the right conditions, it can achieve amazing things. But when something goes wrong, the thing is practically useless.

When the conditions are perfect, and Rodgers is playing with other extremely talented players, he can achieve things no one else can. Rodgers throwing back shoulder to Adams, forget about it. Rodgers on the field with Jordy, Cobb, Finley, Driver, Jennings - unbelievable performances. But asking Rodgers to play with non-elite talent is like asking a Ferrari to race in the snow. And Rodgers asking for $50M and elite talent is delusional. He made his choice, and the results are predictable. He chose money over talented teammates, despite the fact that his skillset is not elevating lesser talent, his skillset is playing elite football with other elite players. The whole thing was doomed from the start.

You should bench Rodgers as soon as its clear you're not winning the superbowl this year. I'd say that's clear now, but if you want to wait and see if he can beat the Cowboys and Eagles, that's fine. But you have to use the final 5 games to evaluate Love.

Your Ferrari is outdated. There is more new cars that outmatched the engine that was spared through years and time influence. Even with the best condition to that Ferrari, Ferrari can not use those condition. There isn't any power left in it. Ferrari, which also had several crashes, 2 significant, also shows the influence on it. You do not take 15 years used Ferrari to the competition with much younger and new cars. There is no chance for that Ferrari to win!

Ha, I hear you. But really I'm thinking about the past 10 years and Rodgers legacy. If you needed to build the greatest team of all time, Rodgers might be your QB. But winning football isn't about playing in perfect conditions surrounded by fellow stars. Sometimes it has to be about making the most of what you're given and building those players into a winning team.

But one reason (at least) I rate him so highly is that ...for many years...he elevated 6-10 or 7-9-type talent to 12-win seasons. Yes, we all know they only won one Lombardi Trophy, but the team was a contender primarily because of his level of play.

Only when there is absolutely nowhere to hide will we possibly see such decisions. They are all deeply invested in this disaster. No, he is getting paid 50 million dollars to keep the GBP in the national media conversation. If our next QB lights it up more power to him, I'll be as happy as anyone. But I'd bet money it's primarily a business decision to keep him out there, which is partially why they gave him the contract they did.

By 8 or 9 losses, the Pack will almost mathematically be out of any playoff contention. I realize that it's a longshot now, but not only is he the face of the franchise, but the MVP of the last two seasons. I'd also say that this game was his first real stinker. it's not about his feelings.

I can take losing against a team that is more talented, better coached and flat-out beats you. The Lions played with a lot of heart and it was enough to beat the disarray of players and miscues that was the Packer side of the contest. A couple of things:

1. The Packers are a poorly coached team on both sides of the ball.
2. We are not strong in either trench
3. We don't have serious threat on offense that requires special attention

This goes well beyond Aaron Rodgers but his $50 million price tag will be what gets the most attention.

Razer Rodgers 50 million tag is what keeps us from having most of the things you say we are weak at. We let go of Turner and our OL is a mess, he surely could have helped. We let go of Z Smith our D is a mess. We let go of Scantling we have no deep threat. No Devante. All because swollen head Rodgers had to get 50 million. The OL and D mess is not due to letting an average OL player or malcontent millionaire go.

It is due to elevating an assistant OL coach to his level of incompetence and the DC losing his players.

I can only imagine what a cancer pot head Z would be in the locker room right now.

I get it that $50 million is a ridiculous number and probably shouldn't have happened. But the failures of this year's team extends well past his play. Z Smith didn't play last year and our current D is leaking oil on several fronts - the biggest being confused play. MVS was a speedy, one trick pony. We drafted Christian Watson to replace him and have FAILED to use him in the same fashion. I'll grant you that the O-line has been a problem primarily because of injury BUT the poor use of personnel on the O-line has been so evident that you got to wonder who is coaching.

Rolling it up to our QB not playing at MVP level is what we are doing but the failures are widespread. I don't know how an offense can be based on tight window throws, zero separation route running or confused route execution and still expect the QB to win the game.

The money didn't have to go to Z or to MVS, it could have gone to someone else that would have provided value to this team. Zero separation and confused route execution is a function of relying on rookies and poor free agent WRs, an issue that could have been solved by having more money to acquire better talent.

A great QB in his late 30s and a roster with no weapons and cap issues for 2/3 years locked in to prevent aggressive FA for a couple of years is a bad investment Irrespective of the identity of that QB or of the team. It would have been a great investment for Denver or any team in a similar contract/cap/roster scenario perhaps.

Game Balls to the O line pass protection. One thing to mention is having Sunday Ticket, I saw last weeks Lions game and their pass rush was god awful against Miami so I'm not sure our O line did anything?
But Rodgers did have time to throw and wasnt sacked that I can recall.
Lame calls. Again not sure. I hate to blame injuries but we had a slew of them. The irony, when Stokes went out, I thougt, wow Nixon coming in will help the pass d a lot. I never wish for an injury but Stokes has to go, he and King were terrible picks. they just cant play pro ball.
Laugh balls. I had to laugh when Rodgers threw the ball into the ground and used the MF words. He really didnt have a happy game did he. Hope he didnt watch Brady bring his team back with 44 seconds on the clock to win the game. Bet the Scotch was flowing last night. LOL

"You’re dreaming if you think Matt LaFleur is going to bench Aaron Rodgers and play Jordan Love"

That shouldn't be the case. The Packers are not winning a superbowl this year. The Rodgers era is over. To play the guy because you know he's going to have a sh*tty attitude as he realizes his career is over is not a reason to play him.

Now, if they already know that Love isn't the answer at QB moving forward, then yeah play 12 the rest of the season, who cares. But if you're not 100% certain about whether Love is the next starting quarterback for the Packers, you better treat the rest of this season as a true evaluation period. That's super valuable, and wasting that opportunity over somebody's emotional fragility is stupid and is how you turn one bad season into multiple bad seasons.

In a couple of games this season is likely truly washed up for even the most diehard deniers. At that point the big question and test of the leadership won’t be avoidable. This team has no cap, is awful and now won’t have Gary for a year either by the looks of it. At that point there will not even be mathematical pretense left. Will the organization face up to the reality that the Rodgers era is done? This roster isn’t getting an infusion of FA talent in ‘23 or 24 if he’s still here. In fact it will have to shed it.

If it does, Love plays because even if he’s not the future, Rodgers is the past. Rodgers can be a cancer, if he chooses, but by that point it’s just one more and temporary ailment among many as serious. The money is spent. It’s no longer a reason to play him. It’s a sunk cost that we can’t recover and playing him only costs us a chance to learn.

By the end of this regular season we will see whether the Packers have a functioning board. If we do, Murphy will retire, it will emerge that a search has been conducted and the new hire will be a President not the head of football. That person will hire the new head coach and will in turn revamp the coaching staff and FO. Very few of either may survive.

If that does not occur then the self delusion and dysfunction will continue and we will be the sick man of the division playing out a fantasy possible only because Murphy removed a critical check in incompetence by making himself the central player in the football side, removing the one executive who should be untainted. The Board rubber stamped that, but he controls nominations to both the Board and to its executive committee, which should have been seen as a massive red flag in fiduciary terms if he was to be involved in football decisions.

We will learn a lot more about the health of the overall organization in these coming months, not just the FO.

Right now, i would fire LaFleur and give Bisaccia the reins simply to stop the downward spiral in morale and break the chain of expectations and practices. That would also signal a change: the end of the fantasy and signal a time to play for your futures.

This was the logical conclusion of a decision that never made sense rationally to any who cared to look. It’s just that it exposed the ugly truth that we hired a Head Coach unfit and unable and that cost us 2 good chances to win it all and then refused to face reality that we had closed our own window in doing so, even without Father Time.

The magnitude of the errors by Murphy since about 2015 is staggering in retrospect. No President should survive wasting Rodgers and undermining the very integrity of governance of the organization at the same time. The Packers are at a crucial crossroads organizationally, not merely on the field. The two are intrinsically linked and recovery is unlikely if both aren’t addressed cleanly and decisively.

I hear you. I don't think the average fan understands the dynamics of what it takes to operate a winning team within the confines of a salary cap league. And because of that, they don't understand how ugly this is going to get.

It's one thing to have an MVP at quarterback sucking up a massive portion of the available cap space, but to have that hit coming from a mediocre QB, or a QB that isn't even on the roster anymore puts Green Bay in a position that very few teams have ever had to deal with. To try and produce a winning team by 2025 is going to be a huge challenge, and current leadership is not the ones that should be given the opportunity to pursue it.

I said this yesterday, I feel bad for Love. He didn't get to choose where he was drafted. Talented kid coming out of school just sits on the bench for three years, and now if he's given the chance to compete he's going to be given a roster that is still fighting with one arm tied behind its back because of Rodgers. Kid is going to go out there next year, throwing to sub-par receivers, and get criticized for not being 2011 Aaron Rodgers. Talk about being set up to fail, and he'll never get a re-do. That's a tough break.

I actually think Doubs and Toure will be decent NFL players. Beyond that, Lazard is a good number 3 but maxed out and none of the others are likely here. The interest in upgrading at TE suggests Tonyan won’t be either. Deguara is a better piece than he’s given credit for, but that’s it for TEs too. That’s the price for what we did to have the run last year and this.

It’s another reason why the Rodgers extension made so little sense. We are only getting better through development next year and the year after really. After the contract we gave him that became inevitable. The real concern is that if he doesn’t retire, and we can’t find a buyer, we can’t cut him without a 99 million cap hit over 2 years, 66 million in 2024!

I read a lot about Love being a bad pick and that he will never be good. I think in some senses that doesn’t really matter for the reasons above. If we play him and he’s awful, we are anyway and he moves on. Not great but the least of our issues. If he’s ok, he’s s cheap starter next year and his price plummets to keep him while we get competition. Now if he’s good this year it gets interesting.

If Love plays well after a couple of games and with a suitable game plan then his price skyrockets. The assumption is that we’d look to retain him. In almost every circumstance teams would, but we may be the exception. If he’s good and we can’t deal Rodgers and Rodgers doesn’t want to retire, we likely can’t extend him let alone afford 20 million as an option guaranteed over one year.

Given we likely have a weak O next year, we could have to do the unthinkable and trade him. Brave, possibly foolish, but maybe the only way to extract value as we retool and sit through the cap hangover. Etling with this roster might not be too bad an idea as a place holder for a year or two if we are realistic about expectations and while we develop for the future.

It's not Rodgers's fault he got that contract. It's the Packers' fault. A player should get whatever he can while he can. He didn't make the cap, the NFL did. The teams like it when the player is stuck with the blame from fans, not the FO.

Damn Coldworld, that's a better post than half of the writers on this site can put out in a feature article. Ever look into getting published?

The Packers going forward should start playing rookies and backups more to see what they have. Obviously that is going to happen anyway with all the injuries. Gary out the season with ACL is big blow. Enagbare will be one that will be starting now. Kylin Hill with Jones banged up. Savage should just be sat, so give playing time to Rudy Ford. Toure should see more with Doubs and Watson banged up again. Wyatt in for Lowry. Rasheed Walker and Sean Ryan. Why not? Get them in for some late game snaps. Don’t see this team being able to pull out wins any time soon. And yes, Jordan Love. Give him a few 4th quarters at least. Does he have a future? Is he a gamer for more than a series or two? Reality is there is going to be very little to lose. And you may gain one or more of these guys stepping up and showing their worth. It would take a tremendous amount of courage to do that, and unfortunately I don’t see these coaches or FO having much, but that would be the smart play, IMO.

With Stokes down, we should move Savage and try him as a DB. It’s not just rookies, it’s that kind of experiment too that must happen. Heflin for Lowry with Wyatt playing more is another non rookie example. This is the chance to know what we have.

Rodgers poisoned this locker room a long time ago. Were just now finally seeing the effects of it.

Game Ball: Lazard for playing hard, at least while I was still watching the game. I turned it off at halftime.

Lame Call: Everyone and everything else from Murphy down through the coaches and most of the players. The injured guys get the benefit of the doubt especially Gary and Jones. Maybe Watson was allowed to return from his first concussion too soon. I hate to think it but Watson's career could be in jeopardy after 2 concussions in 2 weeks. That's just not good for anyone.

The Packers have really screwed themselves. Given their salary cap issues even if they wanted to fire Gute and/or MLF why would any quality GM or HC candidate want to come to Green Bay with the current cap situation and very little opportunity to add elite FAs. They may need to wait until they have enough cap room to sign FAs before they can attract new management and coaching to Green Bay. It's the price that you pay when you go all in and the wheels fall off as they have for the Packers this season. Anything can happen but it's looking like the 70s have called and the Packers have decided to answer the call for a while at least.
Thanks, Since '61

Of all the frustrating things that happened, nothing frustrated me more than this...

Last play of the game, the play clock winds down to the very last second. ARod takes a timeout.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER TAKING A TIMEOUT, the offense appears totally confused about what they're doing, gets to the line late, the clock runs all the way down AGAIN. and the Packers definitely could have been called for a delay penalty as the clock clearly read zero.

I get it that there are a lot of injuries and new players, etc. but we can't even get the team lined up and the ball snapped after a freakin' time out??

I blame the front office and the draft and develop philosophy coupled with the exclusion of premier free agent pick ups. Yeah, Rodgers played terribly. He stinks it up a few games a year. But this has been years in the making. All of the front office has to go. Anyone who believes that draft and develop should be 90% of team building, with a sprinkling of B-talent FAs or UFAs, need to go with them. That's the lesson here. I don't understand why local media doesn't make a bigger stink about it.

Still trying to figure out just what kind of perfect storm happened that took the Packers from back to back years of contending for the NFC title and tickets to the big one, to where they are now, a 3 and 6 team that looks dazed, confused, and at times like they don't give a crap. Makes your head spin how fast this all happened, and it certainly looks like it might be a few seasons before it gets better. This is what the FO got for going all in on Rodgers, and now they don't and won't have any money to attract talent.
Seriously hope there is some kind of change at the top, Let's face it, even when they got good years from Rodgers and offense, they never did anything to address the defense and the special teams; we all remember what happened in Seattle in 2015 in the playoffs, and it repeated again last year against the 49ers. That stuff is on the coaching staff and the management.
Hopefully, the Packers use the rest of the season to evaluate what talent they have, and start figuring out a path forward. For now, I'll just be checking scores on my PC on game day, Not much point in watching even if they are showing the Packer game in my area, and I'm guessing that unless the networks are contractually obligated to show a Packer game, they've seen enough and are looking for other games to substitute.
