Lions 20 Packers 16: Game Balls & Lame Calls

Pack gets roughed up in fourth quarter as curtain comes down on season.

I came away from this game with three clear impressions. Number one, not only are the Detroit Lions a better team than the Green Bay Packers, but they are positioned to remain so for several years to come. It became painfully evident when the fourth quarter began. Trailing by three, and with nothing to play for except pride, the Lions rolled up their sleeves and dominated the Packers in all phases.

It was almost as if they were toying with Green Bay, confident they could simply flip the switch and push the Packers around whenever it suited them. When Green Bay had the ball in the final quarter, you could see, as the ball was snapped, the offensive line get shoved straight backward about three yards. Meanwhile on defense, Green Bay could not handle the physicality of the Detroit running backs and O-linemen. Allowing the Lions to run the final 3:27 off the clock spoke volumes.

Secondly, if you have a quarterback who is playing at home, with the season on the line, against the worst defense in the league, and he still can’t rise to the occasion, then I don’t see the point in continuing on with that quarterback. If Aaron Rodgers couldn’t come through under these circumstances, then when would he? I don’t know how the front office could think the future will be any different than this with Aaron Rodgers under center.

Thirdly, this is the fourth consecutive year the season has ended with an underachieving defeat. At some point, this has to stick to Matt LaFleur. His quarterback could hardly have played worse, but he wasn’t alone. LaFleur and his staff were convincingly outcoached, as they were in 2019 by the Niners, in 2020 by the Bucs, in 2021 by the Niners again, and now the Lions.

I’m not one of these types who over reacts to backbreaking losses by demanding that everybody be fired. But under LaFleur this team has shown a definitive pattern of season-ending failure. LaFleur won’t be, and shouldn’t be fired, but his seat should be very hot heading into next season.

GAME BALLS

Christian Watson

He has the kind of talent you can build an offense around. He will only get better. He led the team with five receptions for 104 yards, including a brilliant catch of a 45 yard bomb, underthrown as usual, by Rodgers. His development will be fun to look forward to over the long offseason.

Mason Crosby

Deadly accurate on four field goal tries, including a 53 yarder that was dead center and just bounced the wrong way off the crossbar. If this was number two’s swan song, the all time franchise scoring leader went out in style.

LAME CALLS

Rasul Douglas Unsportsmanlike Penalty

I’m not sure we ever got a complete explanation of what Douglas was doing at the end of the half when he walked along the line of scrimmage and tried to grab the ball out from under the center, but then pushing an opposing player to draw a fifteen yard penalty, basically giving the Lions three points, was the stupidest play of the night. Or at least it was until the fourth quarter.

Quay Walker Pushing a Trainer

What in the ever-loving world possessed the rookie linebacker to shove a trainer? Yes, the trainer did gently bump Quay from behind in an effort to get past him to the injured player. But Walker’s reaction was not only worthy of a fifteen yard penalty and ejection, it was a bad and embarrassing look for the franchise in light of the aftermath of the Damar Hamlin situation.

Aaron Rodgers

It’s too painful to go through the laundry list of his poor throws and bad judgement. The bottom line is, he just isn’t good enough to win critical games anymore. He was outplayed by Jared Goff. Not once, but twice this season. Most disturbing, he saves his worst play for the red zone. Maybe the receivers weren’t open enough, maybe the O-line didn’t protect him well enough, there are excuses to be made. Regardless, you’ve just got to get a better performance from the leader of your team in a game this important.

Fourth down decisions

Being aggressive is all well and good, but you can’t be reckless about it. Going for it on 4th and 1 from your own 31 yard line in the first quarter was just foolhardy. Then deciding not to go for it in the third quarter on 4th and 7 from the 34 was also ill-advised. Asking Crosby to hit from 53 yards in those Lambeau conditions was low percentage. The resulting field position for the Lions helped them score their first touchdown three plays later. Yes, hindsight is always 20-20, but if you’re going to call a game in that kind of a wide open manner, you had better execute. The Packers did not.

THREE AND OUT

-- So now begins what should prove to be one of the most intriguing off seasons in recent memory. Difficult decisions loom on players such as Allen Lazard, Robert Tonyan, Randall Cobb, Adrian Amos, Dean Lowry, Mason Crosby and most notably, Jordan Love. AJ Dillon will be entering a contract year. Aaron Jones has a $20 million cap hit. Hard to see them running it back with this cast of characters. Nor should they.

-- Toss Yosh Nijman into that mix as well. It was disappointing to see Yosh get abused so badly by rookie Aidan Hutchinson, that he had to be replaced in the first half by Zach Tom. Re-signing Nijman seemed like a no brainer, until now. If he’s not good enough to be a starting tackle in a critical game, it may not be worth the money it will take to sign him.

-- The telecast Sunday night followed Aaron Rodgers on his long walk off the field, down the runway, and into the locker room, arm and arm with good buddy Randall Cobb. Looks can be deceiving, but the scene definitely felt like the end of something. Perhaps QB12 will keep walking, off into the sunset, calling an end to one of the most illustrious careers in NFL history.

If so, thanks for the memories Aaron. You brought us much joy and celebration over the years. One day we’ll put your name up on the stadium, and your likeness in our hall of fame. You won a Super Bowl for us and for that we will always be grateful.  But the best thing you can do for the franchise now, is to pass the torch. It’s time.

To your last point, I can't get Seger's "Turn The Page" earworm out of my head today.

There's a lot to unwrap about the track this team chose, and we don't know if any of the alternatives would have worked out any better or at all, but this one didn't.

It was a total team loss. Special teams stunk, offense stunk, defense stunk in the fourth quarter. In big games like this against strong apponents, you have to play well in all three phases and the Packers under coach Lefleur just refuse to do so.
LaFleur needs to go, he does not have that tangible of being able to outcoach or motivate his team to play their best.

Yes, Jones fumbled and Smith was no where to be seen but once again Rodgers choked, shrunk, and didn't deliver in the biggest game of the year.

IF you pay a man $50 MILLION A YEAR, then he needs to be better, much, much better and Rodgers hasn't for 4 years in a row under MLF.

Therein lies the crux of the biscuit. When you invest a quarter of your resources in an asset from which you expect a proportionate return, and bear the opportunity cost of other avenues you eschewed, and it doesn't deliver, you've peed your money away.

Everybody gets paid for what they did. That's why you get a raise. Eventually you can't outperform those raises. It's the way of the world. Almost every leader is overpaid, ARod is no exception
You may hate him but he at least tried to earn his money. Smith could not even do that. He should get everybody's scorn for that, maybe forever. Whatever Smith is paid every penny of it was overpay in that game.

I can't point to either Jones or Smith as problems in this loss. Jones ran hard through small openings and took an awful beating. The fumble was proceeded by a clubbing from a tough defense. Preston Smith was neutralized by a very good O-line. Our D-line was over matched plain and simple.

No depth was given to their group on Sunday. Gary was taken out during the last Detroit game and nobody was trained to fill a spot. Chris Slayton or J.Ford could have been in the rotation, or both.
This guy Barry is a fraud. Naturally, they will retain him, to save money.

Agree. And if the 4 dropped passes that should have been caught were, AR has a 77% completion rate. If Doubs catches the perfectly thrown ball down the sidelines it could have been another TD.

AR did not play his best but he has not all year. Father time has caught up with him as it does with every QB and player. He has covered up the non-talent on this team for 15 years and now he cannot do it anymore. It is time for him to move on and retire but I can guarantee you Love will not do any better until we get more talent around him and get Murphy and Gute out the door.

This whole team has major issues. And that includes the head coach. Going for it on your own 30 yard line and giving your opponent free points in a one and done game? Absolute stupidity. And then having your kicker try a 53 yard FG when he just barely sqeaked one over at 49 yards earlier in the game? Your team takes on your personality as a HC. This team is undisciplined and makes stupid decisions in must win games. It has for the last 4 years.

You should look at that play again. It was thrown into very tight coverage and even though it hit him in the hands, the majority of WRs would not make that grab. What about the low throw to Doubs with a wide open Cobb in the middle of the field. That led to a Lions TD on their next possession

thank you PeteK for pointing out how difficult it was for Doubs not only to catch that pass, but to even see it. His vision was totally shielded by the DB.
The ball probably shouldn't have been thrown and could just as easily been intercepted.
If anything, my complaint on Doubs on that play is he didn't seem prepared for it. We can't know if that's on him or our hero qb?

You can say that about alot of catchable balls in the NFL. That is the difference between good NFL WRs and average ones. It also the difference in teams that win in the playoffs and must win games. WR's 90% of the time are not wide open, they are just open.

He is an NFL WR. He needs to catch that football.

I too agree that he played good enough in the 1st half and the team(offense) played poorly in the 1st half and 3rd qtr. Getting stopped in the red zone running the ball, catches being dropped and jones fumble. But coming to the 4th qtr we expect our MVP to bail us out in such situations that is exactly why he was paid 50 million isn't it.

Coming to coaching i haven't seen a worser coach than Lafleur that made to the playoffs. His team always comes cold in the big games very under prepared, indisciplined.

Pete, do not fool yourself. Davante saw what is coming and he wanted to spare himself from another year of misery, false hope and inadequate coaching. That was primary reason why he was pushing out. Excuse was that he is mad because Packers did not offer him contract during 2021 season. What is the difference when you'll sign contract? And Packers offered him more money than Raiders.

After a loss like this, we'll be dealing with all kinds of speculation for the next few days and even weeks or months. Who'll be there, who'll be gone? Who knows?
A lot of us can continue to blame Barry, and I will for his inability to adjust, and there's plenty of other things that can be directed in many different directions as well.
The bottom line here is that we've been spoiled, and lucky. We've had two HOF Quarterbacks, back-to back, and that's hidden a lot of things. The inevitable is here and we're going to have to live with it.
Imagine the ass-whuppin' the 49er's would have put on this team, be happy the Lions saved us from that, and look toward the future. It's time to move on.

My feeling as well, Houndog. Do I like losing and not making the playoffs? Of course not. But I never expected this team to make the playoffs based on October-November. December gave me hope, but I was still just cautiously optimistic.

Anything can happen any given Sunday, but I figured there was a strong chance the Pack would blow this game exactly as they did, by looking like the true team they are, the one we saw in October-November. “They are who we thought they were.” And I strongly felt that even if they did make the playoffs, as you say, the Niners would brutalize them. I’d rather not go through that experience a third time in four years, thanks very much.

To quote Ken:

“You won a Super Bowl for us and for that we will always be grateful. But the best thing you can do for the franchise now, is to pass the torch. It’s time.”

It’s indeed time to move on. I’ve suspected it for several years; two MVP seasons didn’t mitigate the display of not-quite-enough-ness in the big game. We’ve seen this movie plenty of times now and we know how it ends. Time to accept the reality: The Rodgers Era is over.

I wasn't talking about this game, I was talking about the 'Season'.
And you're likely right, Barry wasn't the problem last night, unless you consider a lack of discipline a coaching issue. I do.
With that said, team discipline starts at the top, and MLF is the Head Coach.

I hear you. The defense played without discipline and cohesion for much of the season. Didn't like the Barry hire and I doubt that he will ever coordinate a top defense but as we know - the headcoach picked the man. I think that ultimately the headcoach will pay for some poor decisions.

Sure, just when I think the Packers could maybe run the table if they could get past SF, they revert to the mean.

The previous four weeks were meaningless.

So, those of you who hate change, are you FINALLY go to see that failure to change has led us to this point?

Are you finally going to see that Rodgers, while this loss is not at all entirely on him, is no longer the Rodgers of 2020 or 2021 but is now "post-Rodgers"? Like his arm strength, his accuracy is declining. That for every "wow" throw there are now one or two WTF throws? That, as Ken said, this team is better without him than with him?

Are you finally going to see that LaFleur is NOT an NFL head coach? That he is weak and vacillating, with no coherent strategy when his game plan is countered by his opponent? That he cannot lead the team in any meaningful manner?

Are you finally going to see that Murphy's corporate structure, with its silos and lack of a logical flow, with its dictatorial power dynamic and an org chart more typical of a family-owned privately held company than a publicly held PROFESSIONAL corporation is the root of all this dysfunction?

Or will you, like Murphy apparently wants to do, run the wash-rinse-repeat cycle ad nauseum until Scooter McLean's team is reincarnated in 2024 or 2025?

Well Jurp, actually everyone wanted change from last year's exit. Like always, the debate isn't whether to change, but how much and where. The biggest question is whether there is sufficient/lack of talent or whether it is coaches/scheme/preparation/leadership. To be fair, one was to have multiple seasons trying to draft, fill talent pool, and if the team underachieves despite evidence of talent, then you make leadership/coaching changes. A calculated approach to change is essential in any organization or you get the Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears: a long list of 2-3 year HCs. Now to answer your question, I lost faith in MLF, Barry. The player talent is there. Just huge underachievement all 3 units. The pack tried to eke out one more SB window (and rightly so), but now the tab must be paid, contracts pared, rebuilding time. So yes, I'm in agreement.

Actually, very few of the posters here wanted to make the change that had to happen for this year and next year to even have a chance at success, and that was trading Rodgers to Denver. It didn't happen, and looking at some of the comments on this board (not just this thread), most of those guys are STILL in denial.

Imagine if we had the picks last April and next year that Seattle had/has, courtesy of Denver. SMH at Murphy's absolute idiocy.

"The previous four weeks were meaningless."

Disagree. This is mostly a young team and there was plenty of player growth and evaluation that happened--and winning games is an important part of player mindset. There are hard decisions that need to be made this off-season and those four games will go a long way toward helping to figure who stays, who goes, and who can be elevated into prominent roles in 2023.

He will end up somewhere next year and be in the playoffs.
We won’t be so fortunate for the foreseeable future.
Our bright spot is an injury prone speedy wide receiver with bad hands.

Unless you win the SB, every last game of the season is a bitter loss. You don't think Buffalo in SB games had a bitter taste in their mouths?

Anyway, this game gave me time for thought and the one biggest issue IMHO is the oline. Frankly, there were times that the edge was cleared and running run available but Dillon chose to cut inside. This has been a problem for him all year. Yet doesn't excuse the poor blocking that this oline reverts to with LBs shooting the gaps.

Bottom line... I don't know if Green Bay's offense isn't run properly or is the scheme poorly designed. One or the other, because it isn't working. Rodgers has made it work through his play in the past, but when his play is marginal we see the result.

...this game gave me time for thought and the one biggest issue IMHO is the oline. Frankly, there were times that the edge was cleared and running run available but Dillon chose to cut inside. This has been a problem for him all year...

Totally agree. O-line has not been strong enough to overcome good D-line play. To your point about Dillon, he doesn't have good vision and any decision he makes usually results in stopping behind the line. I am not looking forward to what backfield without Aaron Jones and Dillon as the feature back looks like.

He made a great cut to the outside to get an important first down as a missed block came barreling down on him. Too many times he is tackled behind the line of scrimmage. This season Runyon and Myers were pedestrian.

He is not a fast, cut-step runner. He needs the lead dog FB in front of him off the I formation or a Pro set. Creed Humphrey was dominating the field, yesterday. He was another whiff by Gutedkunst, but Myers can play guard with his movement skills. Runyan has been exposed. Schmitz from the Gophers as a Center prospect. Bergeron from Syracuse a solid RT guy. I would keep Bhak.

First order of business please hire a new GM.... Someone who can evaluate talent. Tired of bringing in lackluster/retread football players. The Packers need so much, the Lions owned them in the trenches... Out coached, Out played and clearly out managed... Kudos to the LION organization they are no longer bottom dwellers in the NFC North. Packers where are they headed now...? It maybe time to replace Murphy, Gute and Ball.

I heard many posters criticize management for the 2022 offseason and all, but I still believe it was the best way to play the cards at the time for a SB run. But, it clearly didn't work. On paper, we thought the pack had a dominant Oline with Bahk, Jenkins, Myers and young talent. We thought a dominant defense, ILBs, stout line, and top 5 backfield of elite CBs/safeties, a pair of top RBs. We knew the pack sucked at special teams, but had hope in a new coordinator. It was a good hand to bet on even with a the WR question. Well, the data set is now complete. Oline very overrated. Dline overrated. Pass defense very overrated. The pack teased us once or twice this season as they did each of the last 3 seasons with the potential of what the team should have done, w domination. Oh well, may as well close the season this week, rather than extent to watch a miserable embarrassment next week in Cali.

My feelings exactly. Just because a strategy doesn’t play out like you hoped doesn’t mean it was the wrong strategy. Just like blackjack: splitting aces is the correct strategy, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to beat the dealer every time you do it. There is always random chance.

The decision to “run it back” one more time wasn’t a bad one. We just gambled and lost. It sucks, but that’s life. I think (hope) the Packers brass aren’t dumb enough to push all their chips onto Rodgers’ table one more time, though. Time to pay the bill and start the next phase.

I get that there are gambles in life but there are good bets and there are bad bets. The Packer organization needed to take a hard look in the mirror when it came to surrounding cast and talent gaps when it pushed the chips in on Rodgers leading another dance. From rookie WRs to O-line health to Rodgers own playoff history, this season was a Hail Mary.

BINGO. As long as Mark Murphy continues meddling, the Packers will go nowhere. FFS, trade AR if you can, and I believe they still can. There's always that one coach or owner who thinks they can do it. Regardless, they missed the boat on selling high years ago.

Best to get rid of a player a year early, rather than a year late. We're at least 2 years late now.

The story of 2022 on veteran QBs bought or traded is: buyer beware. That said, if the plan is a cut or trade (in whatever way can mitigate cap) getting a used ball bag in return is better than nothing.

When the price is that high, especially after a very tough losses, it's time to change direction. After the signing many of us, including me, were guilty of talking ourselves into the belief that a strong D, O line, and MVP QB could work very favorably. What choice did we have. Now we are in cap limbo waiting once again for a decision. I can't help but think positively what good could come with AR retiring: loads of cap space and high draft picks.

When you bet on hope, I do not think you'll put all your property on one bet. Because it is more than STUPID, IT IS IDIOTIC.

Small group of fans here (me included) warning everybody that Mark Murphy sold the team to get ACR (Aaron CHOKER Rodgers) back on expense of all other players.

That move is the same as you bet on one bet with all of your property.

We also warning that ACR is in decline, he is not coachable, he got the rights no player have not need to have, teams coaching staff was inadequate, etc.

And we were attacked. Eat your crow.

A stout O line with two key components coming off ACLs , one of which was in the surgical suite more than on the field. A team missing a key edge rusher and no edge depth if anyone significant went down. An offense relying on the suitcase carrying Watkins, a bunch of rookie WRs including one with off season knee surgery, and an aging veteran W4 who while savvy isn’t the receiver he was. Let’s not forget that the year started with a Third round WR pick who had contributed almost nothing in the past either as a WR or special teaser. On top of this a coaching staff that from week one onward showed little inclination to make personnel changes. All led by an aging HOF QB who has really shown more interest in the management side than the playing and mentoring side yet who accounts for a third or so of your cap. That is not a plan. It’s a prayer

I said on multiple occasions I wasn't buying into the 4 game winning streak. I had hope it could be different than the 12 games to start the season, AND the 3 SEASONS before that, but hope isn't enough. Not when you CONTINUIOUSLY get outcoached, outplayed, and out schemed every time.

I mentioned more than one this game came down to 2 IFS.

1) Joe Barry's defense didn't revert to the Joe Barry Defense we all know and most certainly don't love.
2) No "Hero Ball"!

Unfortunately we saw them both and then some. Once again I watched a CB we pay over $20 Million a year play WAY off along with all his other CB buddies, and we saw Rodgers AVOID the middle of the field and throw up Hero Balls down the left and right sidelines. Once again we watched MLF raising his hands trying to get the crowd to help bail out his inept DC...Embarrassing!

But all that isn't the worse. What haunts me as I move into my 60's is how much longer I have to put up with Mark Murphy. I will almost certainly KILL ME when I watch the Seattle Seahawks use the #5 overall pick, a pick the Packers could have and should have had.

Thanks Mark, you're DEFINITELY an idiot!

I hope I see one more SB from the Packers. God knows there SHOULD have been more the last 10 years.

Last year's team was loaded with pro bowlers so no blame on management. Fire, determination, and pride was on display in the second half yesterday by Detroit's defense and the opposite by ours. It comes from within and should already be there by the time you reach the pros especially when you play in Lambeau where there are reminders of that everywhere.

A 100 reception WR was held to 49 yds and a total of 224. So no, I don't blame the coverage. However, throws into tight coverage, not making the short throws in the middle, broken tkls, and being driven off the line of scrimmage at the end when when we separate who wants it more.

We were out coached on time management. Detroit refused a late penalty to use up more time. Green Bay accepted a holding penalty that gave Detroit one more down(40 seconds). Detroit then went and made a first down in spite of the penalty.

We had two incredibly stupid penalties. Could that be some reflection on coaching? LeFleur reacted by hollering “play smart” and pointing at his head. How many other teams have had even one penalty all season as stupid as either one of those two?

Rodgers runs the offense, what does LeFleur do?

I hope Rodgers keeps his jersey as a souvenir of his last game as Green Bay’s quarterback, head coach and general manager.

Yes, I advocate new blood in those three positions that Rodgers controlled the past four years.

"Green Bay accepted a holding penalty that gave Detroit one more down(40 seconds)."

The key there was to try to stand, maybe make the Lions throw and give yourself a chance for a TO or sack, force a harder FG (outdoors and in the cold), and potentially keep the game within 3 (and good field position) with a miss. They still had the two-minute-warning. First downs were going to end the game either way. Declining the penalty makes it 3rd and 5 at the GB 17. I was a little puzzled, too, but I understand the logic, somewhat.

It put the pressure firmly on the defense to make something happen either way, and they were getting eaten by the run game.

Very well said Ken. You caught the essence of what this season finale means.

...Green Bay could not handle the physicality of the Detroit running backs and O-linemen...

I will add the Detroit defensive front to the list. The Packers have been getting beat in the trenches for years now and it dictates the outcomes of these big games. As much as I thought our O-line was solid, there was very little push from the interior of the line and a lot of missed blocks.

...If Aaron Rodgers couldn’t come through under these circumstances, then when would he? I don’t know how the front office could think the future will be any different than this with Aaron Rodgers under center...

It would have been courageous and bold to move on from the regular season MVP but the potential for this team was limited considering the gaps on both offense and defense. As the season demonstrated, this was not a last dance team. We hung on to some players too long and missed the window to rebuild for the long term.

And as much as I hate to say it - the future of the NFC North will go through Detroit for the next years. Dan Campbell is forging a tough and talented squad. If they pick well, this next draft will set them up for a long run as the top dog.

Game Balls -

Watson - Watson was the only true threat on offense yesterday. Lazard made some nice plays. Jones had some nice runs. But Watson was the only true threat.

Crosby - I don't know what Mason's future holds, but if this was his last game as a Packer, he did everything he had to do. He missed the long FG by about a foot.

Tom - He will be a starter next year. I would guess at RT next year. But who knows. Either way he deserves to be a starter next year. Yosh struggled at RT. When Tom came

Lame Calls:

Lack of Energy - I don't get how this team can come out flat knowing they are 1 win away from the playoffs. It was simple. You win and you are in the playoffs. Maybe its just me but they just felt to lack the energy.

Stupidity - There were 2 plays that were just stupid on defense. Douglas and Walker. Douglas, might have given them 3 points by taking a swing at the OL. Walker just needs to not be stupid.

Coaching - This game imo came down to decision making by those in charge. LaFleur struggled. The decision to go for it on 4th down in their own territory, was just dumb. The decision to try the 53 yard FG was not the right choice. I hated seeing LaFleur asking if they wanted to punt right before it. He needs to be in charge and tell them he wants to punt. I didn't like how they played defense in this game. A lot more off coverage again and back to what we have seen so much this year.

Three and Out:

Rookie class - This rookie class may have just went down as one of the best ones GB has had in a long time. Walker minus 2 boneheaded penalty's and ejections this year has been very good. Wyatt came on strong at the end of the year. Watson changed our season. Doubs was really good until he got hurt and never really got back in the groove after he came back. Tom will be a starter at one of the 5 OL spots. Enagbare was a great find in the 5th round, and should be a good rotational player next year. Carpenter was a really good special teams player. Maybe he has a future at S? Walker might be a guy to watch next year. Toure is another guy to watch next year as he could emerge. This rookie class could be a big reason why in 1-2-3 years, our team is one of the best in the league again.

Offseason - There will be a lot of decisions that need to be made. I hope the top of the list is to change up the Defensive coaches. Get rid of Joe Barry, and bring in Jim Leonard. That is who I want! I think our defense improves immediately with Leonards leading it. Regardless of who the QB is, they need to bring in more talent at TE and WR. Watson was the only threat yesterday at WR. He looks poised for a huge year 2, but you can't rely only on him. Lazard had nice catches, but they need more WR help. They need more explosive playmakers. And TE had no threat in the passing game. Maybe if they bring Tonyan back next year, he will regain his explosiveness. But he lacked that this year. They need more receiving options. Defensively they need more pass rushers. Losing Gary just killed the pass rush. They need more threats to get to the QB.

Old Vets - Packers have 4 old vets that may or may not be back. Rodgers, Crosby, Cobb and Lewis. Rodgers has been amazing since taking over. I don't feel like he is going to be done, but who really knows. Crosby as well. Cobb brought back and has been a true pro. Lewis has been a great veteran in the locker room since coming over. I feel like Rodgers and Lewis are the most likely ones to be back. And Crosby and Cobb will be the most likely to be gone. If they all decide to retire, I would just like to thank each one for what they have done for GB.

Its going to be interesting to see what happens this offseason. Regardless of what happens. I will be here to support my team.

"Old Vets - Packers have 4 old vets that may or may not be back. Rodgers, Crosby, Cobb and Lewis."

You forget Bakhtiari. While the cap savings on him are not huge, they've positioned themselves with younger and capable players (Tom, Nijman, Jenkins) and developmental prospects. I can't help but think the plan with last year's draft was to put themselves in a spot where they could cut this cord if needed, Enough of his cap commitment stays with the Packers that he's not a terrible cap risk for a team that needs a LT. I don't know how much trade value 69 has, and he's mostly played well when on the field, but if those other vets leave there's not much reason to bring back Bakh.

Yeah, i was more of just the oldest guys on the team. But I did add Cobb to the mix which he isn't that old. Just feels that way.

I think they will keep Bakhtiari, but could let him go to I guess. He is just dominating when he is on the field. He was good at the end of the year minus his serious appendectomy. I think Tom is the RT of the future.

I say this without knowing what the cap ramifications are. If they save a ton or not by letting him go. I don't know that part of it.

This year panned out as it was always likely to. Accept that and then look straight at Murphy. Until this group is cleared out, we will always be Cinderella in January whoever is QB.

A new President, a true GM, a new Head Coach, staff and attitude. No half measures looking to see if a guy can coach. No lame duck year with LaFleur giving him another chance to show he belongs. Face it head on and start the new era with a new system and culture.

None of those fears are unreasonable since the Board is effectively in Murphy’s pocket often two decades of controlling nominations. All of them just underline why he needs to be removed before things get better.

As to Love, bail or not, they need to pick one and go with it. Who knows if Love or whoever will stick but that’s a process that has to happen to give a chance of rebirth, not just at QB but over the whole roster.

“It is time to jettison Rodgers and see it MLF can actually coach.”

For a long time now, I have felt that we don’t really know what we have in LaFleur because we are still seeing some sort of bastardized version of his offense being run by Rodgers. I’ve been willing to cut him some slack because of that, and have been very interested to see what happens in the post-AR era when he has a quarterback who actually does what he wants him to.

But I have to say, some of the stupid situational coaching decisions this season, and this game in particular, have me questioning whether he really does have what it takes to be a successful NFL coach without a super star quarterback playing at an MVP level.

Anyone upset by the Lions game hasn't been watching. This team is just mediocre--the standings showing the truth.
This will be the most interesting off season in a long time. I sense a general change is coming starting with Rodgers. The Packers simply can't bring him back. They have several good players but not enough. Losing to the Vikings and Lions twice but also the Jets, Commanders, Titans not to mention Philly and Buffalo shows a team that isn't ready to compete any more. Among their victories only the Cowboys was semi-impressive. The Buccaneers win was a nail-biter.
The defense was supposed to be great. At times it was, but not enough. The offensive line was hyped but proved to be only mediocre. The play calling sometimes was childish.
Matt LaFleur will be on the hot seat next season. The team reflects the head coach. Look at the Lions. That my friends, is what a real NFL coach looks like. His players would run into a fire for him.
Gute also should be on the hot seat next year. While he's hit some home runs, the overall skill level of the players is not at a championship level. If there is a rebuild this off season both the coach and GM will be given some slack but the time has come(it should have been last year) to cut with the past and look toward the future. Unfortunately, 'all-in' this year came up a bust and the bills for it will stretch into the future.

I hope, but doubt, the Packers faithful will have patience.

Why give MLF another season? Especially what appears to be a rebuilding season? He aint tough and more and more I don't think he's smart...cute though...Packers need a Campbell...

So well said Harry:

...They have several good players but not enough. Losing to the Vikings and Lions twice but also the Jets, Commanders, Titans not to mention Philly and Buffalo shows a team that isn't ready to compete any more...

We are living in the past with the history of Aaron Rodgers heroics. I can't see the Packers competing with KC, Buffalo, Cincy, the 49ers or a handful of other middle teams. We have to face that.

...The defense was supposed to be great. At times it was, but not enough. The offensive line was hyped but proved to be only mediocre. The play calling sometimes was childish...

These are all very true. The last comment about the playcalling is sad and true. Never liked the head coach/playcaller combo. Now we have two problems wrapped up and affecting the general health of the whole team.

Not sure if it is a typo but they lost to the Vikes just once. One time too many, but still just once. This franchise is not going to own the North for a while that's for sure.

under the title GM you surelywant to point to Mark Murphy, didn't you?

Because the last, decisive and final decision is in Mark Murphy hands. He establish himself as CEO/GM that all 3 silos report to him and he approves or not their decisions. 3 silos are HC (MLF), Director of personnel department (BG) and the airector of finance (RB).

Lions 9-8
GB 8-9
What does that make GB?

So why exactly should MLF, with his lost puppy look, be retained?? I certainly don't see any kind of young genius in him...the team reflects him...cute and cuddly and not tough or smart...I say can the whole coaching staff and re-start.....a return to the "gory years" unfortunately...

MLF got his butt kicked soundly by his opposite number yet again. Face it, he’s not an answer or solution and he’s been tranced repeatedly head to head. It’s no time to avoid facing up to that.

MLF might be a decent OC but he's NOT a head coach. Like others have said, this team plays soft, the league knows it. And the team play is a reflection of their head coach and his leadership.

One would think the transformation would have been realized after the beat down by the 49rs in 2019. What resulted was a rerun, a ground hog day via AMC.

Depends on what they do at qb. If theyre gonna keep rolling with Rodgers then yeah they should probly move on from MLF. But if theyre gonna move forward with Love then they absolutely keep MLF at least for another year. MLF's offense is all Love knows. Do we really want to make him the starter while having to start over and learn a new offense? If Rodgers stays, MLF should go. If Rodgers goes, MLF should stay.

Good points Lass. While reading your points I agreed with almost everything so I wont reproduce. I did have Sun Tic and saw all the Lions games this year. Here is something for the pack fans to ponder.

For 60 years the Lions have played cheap ball because of the Fords not wanting to pony up to the bar. They destroyed this franchise basically not the 50 year curse.
For 60 years the Lions relied on 5, 6 7 rounders and had games where stupid players and stupid penalties always kicked their ass. Rasul Douglas type mistakes if you will.

Last night the Lions had a couple of penalties. Last night the Lions had a decent coach who put passion in them. Last night the Lions executed their plays and made few mistakes.

My point! Last night the Lions looked like the Packers of three years ago. Last night the Packers looked like the Lions of three years ago.

Coaching, high draft picks, discipline - ya the Lions got rid of three defensive backs who were good players but trouble makers over the past three years. They werent afraid to cut their loses and move on.

The 'four game winning streak' was a fraud. They played like crap in Chicago, they beat a weak rams, Tua was concussed.

The reality of this season is this team played exactly one good game. One.

That's who this team is, and an intelligent owner and leadership team would plan accordingly.

I won't hold my breath.

Game Balls: Nobody on Green Bay

Lame Calls: I don't have enough time to write them all but here are a few: No quarterback sneak on 4th and 1/2 yard. Terrible play calling first and goal at the five. Jones fumble. Manhandled by Detroit. Played and coached like they were afraid. May have been better if Detroit had something to play for then maybe they would not have played with abandon. Which is the ONLY way to play.

We are on the same page. They need to move down in the first and secure at least one more pick in the second round. BPA in the first. I like Uzomah Edge from K State. I want Tillman in the second. Get two or three TEs from this class. Very deep.

The 4th down decision in the 1st quarter wasn't a bad decision, but the playcalling between 3rd and 4th down was suspect at best.

It's 3rd and 1 and you intend to go for it on 4th so we run a speed back out of the shotgun + a WR end around instead of playing power football...? Just nonsense

Yep. Sure looks like those sweeps and sweep looks were core to the game plan and Detroit shut most of them down. It was at that point that it felt like the Pack started to fade, had no sense of what else to do and just let the Lions hang around until they made adjustments MLF never seems to be able to make.

Two things:

1) "Thirdly...." : Why shouldn't MLF be replaced? He gets out-coached in most big games, makes questionable hiring decisions, and is not really in command of the offense. Time for a new approach and a new offensive system. The red zone offense badly needs to be fixed.

2) Okay, Nijman had a bad game, but remember he was going up against a supremely talented player in Hutchinson. Remember he's still developing.

If Rodgers retires, he leaves over $59 million behind. If he retires, the Packers incur an approximately $40 million dead cap hit, which they can spread out over the next two years. A trade would leave them with the same dead cap hit, spread out over two years. His new team would assume his contract. https://overthecap.com/looking-ahead-to-the-packers-options-with-aaron-r...

Is there someone desperate enough to do that, that has the cap space to accommodate Rodgers? Here is the salary cap available to each team next year. Would the Jets bite? Would the Raiders be stupid enough to take on Rodgers, and reunite him with Adams? I have my doubts, but, who knows? https://overthecap.com/salary-cap-space

I believe Rodgers will be back. And Rightly So-
The Announcement during the game: Rodgers wouldn't let his thumb be Wrapped.
Face it: Rodger's stopped the tank.
Next Trade Jones. Use the cash for Defense. - Per Gary!
Use the Pick on a Safety .
Trade Love. - Use the pick on a safety #2.
Draft a WR, 2 Tes.
Deal between Gutey and MLF. - Rodgers stays. Barry Goes.

I would move Jones. Sean Tucker from Syracuse; Charbonnet from UCLA is a Dorsey Levens clone;Eric Jones, OKL. McIntosh, Georgia...Savage has kept his job, for now, Amos +/_ WR and the TEs are absolutes. OT in Rd one or two. They have to get blue chips on the O-line alongside Bhak. He whiffed with Creed, now enhance the inside.

Clay Walker has to go. No ifs, ands, or butts. No more third chances.
This is serious shit here and LeFleur must show some back bone and cut this guy. Ya first round pick doesn't mean your special and can do this.

If this team cant send a message for the fans, we will not tolerate this stuff, then they deserve to lose and be penalized severely. A few game suspension and fine wont cut it this. We must respect the first responder's who save lives. No way going forward with this guy he is a loser. This isnt about anger management but respect.

And so it ends. Not with a bang, but with a whimper (TS Eliot---yeah, I went to college).
A roller-coaster ride season, sometimes thrilling, but mostly infuriating, concludes with all the cars going off the track at the end of the ride. Killing what was predicted by many (including me--- FOOL!) to be a great season.
And with all that cap talk for the next few months. it's hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel.
Anybody else remember the 70s and 80s?
Get ready.
