Tyler Dunne over at the Packer Report is a bit distressed about the possibility of Ted Thompson bringing in J.P. Losman to be the back-up to Aaron Rodgers. I'm not that familiar with Dunne's work, but he misses the boat completely with the following:

The Packers must find a veteran quarterback who realizes and accepts his role as backup/mentor. Not a competitor. Considering Rodgers’ injury history, the Packers must choose wisely. Gray or Frerotte would have been ideal choices. Holcomb may be the calm, quiet veteran the team needs. Eleven years of experience at a very cheap price sure beats four years of failure for a draft pick.

Um, no.

First of all, Losman is by no means the 'answer' as a QB. But given McCarthy's penchant for improving every quarterback he's ever worked with, the prospect of a young strong-armed quarterback with several good years ahead of him is intriguing. (The man had a Top 10 offense with Aaron Brooks as his starter, for goodness sake...) Kelly Holcomb, on the other hand, is horrible and has a dead arm. All you have to do is watch the tape of his start against the Packers in last season's first Viking game. Just awful. What possible improvement would he bring to the team?

And that's the other point Dunne misses. The Packers aren't interested in anyone's ego. Especially Rodgers'. Will he be given every chance to succeed? Of course. But quarterback, like every other spot on the team, will be open to competition. The team has gotten good results from letting players in the defensive secondary and defensive line push each other, and we'll see more evidence of that next training camp at strong side linebacker, and probably free safety and offensive guard as well. The quarterback position should be no different. Yes, this is Rodgers' team. But having a young player behind him with starting experience that may be able to push him is a good idea, not a bad one.
