Maggie’s Pre-Game Six Pack - 2024 Week 9

The Packers are feline frisky after a win against the Jaguars propelled them to 6-2 on the season. Now they’re back home at Lambeau Field to take on the 6-1 Detroit Lions. Another cat team, but this one with much bigger stakes. Here are six things to keep in mind during this NFC North clash for first in the division.

1. All They Do Is Win

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, “this is the first time since Dec. 8 1996 (10-3 Green Bay vs. 12-1 Denver) where both teams enter a game at Lambeau Field in Week 9 or later with a .750-plus winning percentage.”

The Lions come to Lambeau Field on a five-game win streak, while the Packers are enjoying a four-game win streak of their own. The teams combined have three losses this season, and each loss has been by five points or less. In the division rivalry, the Lions were on a four-game win streak against the Packers before Green Bay snapped the streak on Thanksgiving last season with a 29-22 win.

Worth noting, this is only the second division matchup for both the Lions and the Packers, with each team facing the Vikings once already. Per the dope sheet, Sunday’s contest is the first of five NFC North games the Packers will play in their final nine games. It’s the first time since 2015 that five of the final nine games will be against the division, with Green Bay on a bye next week before traveling to Soldier Field to face the Bears in Week 11.

2. The Pride of the North?

This Lions offense is putting the rest of the league on notice. Detroit is first in the NFL in points for, averaging 33.4 points per game. The team is first in rushing touchdowns with 13, and third in passing touchdowns with 15. In Detroit’s last four games, the Lions have put up 42, 47, 31, and 52 points. They boast a plus-91 point turnover differential in that four-game stretch.

Per CBS, the Lions have 25 touchdowns with only 20 incompletions in the last five games. They’re the first team since the merger with more touchdowns than incompletions in a five-game span.

On the season, Jared Goff has 13 touchdowns to only four interceptions with 1,695 yards. His completion percentage of 74.1% is the highest of his career by a significant margin. He’s averaging nine yards per attempt, which is also a career-high. His 115.3 passer rating is once again the best of his career, and if it stands would be the third time he’s finished a season with a passer rating over 100.0 (the first two times coming with the Rams).

What makes this offense challenging is that Goff isn’t the only one throwing touchdowns. Both running back David Montgomery and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown have thrown touchdown passes this season, too. It’s an offense that needs to be defended from every angle, but more on that in just a bit.

3. Ready to Pounce

While the Lions are scoring at an electric rate, their defense is keeping pace, too. The team is eighth in points against, allowing an average of 19.1 points per game. They’re tied for second in the league (with the Packers) with 10 interceptions, but the Lions have done it in one less game. Detroit has also officially surpassed the Packers in turnover differential with plus-10, while Green Bay isn’t far behind at plus-seven.

While Packers safety Xavier McKinney leads the NFL in interceptions with six, two Lions are right in the thick of the interception race, too. Kerby Joseph has five picks this season while Brian Branch has four. Joseph and Branch have a combined 18 passes defensed in addition to their combined nine interceptions. The only other player on the Lions with an interception is linebacker Trevor Nowaske who has one.

The pass rush was dealt a blow when star rusher Aidan Hutchinson suffered a gruesome leg injury. There’s some optimism he could be back just in time for a Super Bowl appearance, if the Lions were to make it that far, but he’s looking at a four-to-six month recovery time. Before his injury, Hutchinson had 7.5 sacks with 17 quarterback hits. No one else on the team has more than 2.5 sacks or seven QB hits. The Lions have 20 total sacks this season, averaging just under three per game.

For comparison’s sake, the Packers have 21 sacks this season, but Devonte Wyatt leads the team with three sacks, despite missing three games. Rashan Gary leads the team with seven quarterback hits.

When it comes to third and fourth down conversions, the Lions defense ranks first and second, respectively, allowing third down conversions only 30.7% of the time and fourth down conversions only 33.3% of the time. In the red zone, Detroit is ninth, allowing touchdowns on 47.4% of attempts.

4. Ground and Pound

If the Lions and Packers decide to keep this one on the ground, they have the running backs to make it happen. Josh Jacobs is fourth in the NFL with 667 rushing yards and has three touchdowns on the season after a two-score performance last Sunday against Jacksonville. Green Bay’s offense is fourth in the league in rushing attempts (257) and fifth in rushing yards (1,255), averaging 156.9 yards per game and 4.9 yards per attempt. Jacobs also had a season-long run last week on his 38-yarder against the Jaguars.

For Detroit, the backfield is split between Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Gibbs is seventh in the league with 591 rushing yards while averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He has six touchdowns on the year and is averaging 84.4 rushing yards per game. Montgomery, meanwhile, adds 415 rushing yards and is averaging only 59.3 yards per game, but has seven scores on the ground. He’s averaging 4.5 yards per attempt. As was previously mentioned, Detroit leads the league in rushing scores with 13. The team is also sixth in yards (1,097) and fifth in yards per attempt (5.1).

Per Pro Football Focus, Montgomery, Gibbs, and Jacobs all rank in the top 10 at running back. Montgomery is fourth with an overall grade of 86.1, Jacobs is seventh with an overall grade of 84.2, and Gibbs is eighth with an overall grade of 82.9. Also worth noting, Jacobs is Green Bay’s highest-graded player on offense, while Montgomery and Gibbs are second and third, respectively, for Detroit, behind only tackle Penei Sewell.

5. Options All Over Offense

We talked about the Lions offense and the points they’re scoring. We talked about Jared Goff and his dynamic running back tandem. And now we have to talk about the receiving core that the Packers will face on Sunday.

Jameson Williams is serving a two-game suspension so he won’t be available for Detroit at Lambeau Field. It’s a significant blow since he was second on the team in yards (361) and touchdowns (three). But, we’re also talking about an offense that put up 52 points in his absence last week, too. The real weapon is St. Brown, who leads the team with 41 receptions, 408 yards, and five touchdowns. No other pass catcher has more than 20 receptions on the season. Tight end Sam LaPorta has 272 yards on the year with two scores, but he’s yet to eclipse 53 receiving yards in a game this season.

Green Bay’s defense is 19th in both passing attempts and yards, allowing an average of 215.8 yards through the air per game. It’ll be a collaborative effort on Sunday to slow down Detroit’s passing attack. Behind McKinney, Jaire Alexander is second on the team with two interceptions, and the duo is tied with seven passes defensed each. Some good news, though, is that it sounds like safety Evan Williams will be available for Sunday after exiting the Jacksonville game with a hamstring injury.

McKinney, Williams, and Alexander are three of Green Bay’s four highest-graded defenders per PFF. McKinney is third out of 85 qualifying safeties with a grade of 89.8. Williams is fifth with a grade of 87.4, and Alexander ranks 14th out of 110 cornerbacks with a grade of 74.9.

A pleasant surprise, inside linebacker Eric Wilson earned PFF’s third-highest grade amongst 81 linebackers with an 88.0 overall score. Even with Quay Walker clearing concussion protocol and being good to go for Sunday, Wilson needs to be on the field more as an impact defender in the middle of the defense. So does Edgerrin Cooper, the Week 8 NFC Defensive Player of the Week, and the first Green Bay rookie to win the honor since Clay Matthews in 2009.

The Packers were able to hold Houston receiver Stefon Diggs to five catches for only 23 yards, but didn’t fare as well in Jacksonville, allowing rookie receiver Brian Thomas Jr. three catches for 60 yards and a touchdown. Green Bay’s defense hadn’t allowed a second-half touchdown since Week 3, but let Jacksonville score 17 points in the second half last Sunday. The Lions have a big-play threat at every level on offense (and on defense). Green Bay is going to have to play its cleanest football of the season this week.

6. Quarterback in Question

When Jordan Love exited last week’s matchup with a groin injury, it seemed all but certain he wouldn’t be available for Sunday’s contest against Detroit. After his MRI came back with positive results, reports have circulated since that Love is determined to play this week.

Love’s 15 touchdowns are tied for third in the NFL behind only Baker Mayfield (21) and Lamar Jackson (17), despite playing in two less games. Love is also tied for the league lead in interceptions with nine, alongside Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes. Love has had good protection this season, only taking seven sacks, but his mobility is a larger concern on Sunday if he’s still dealing with a groin injury.

If he’s unable to go, Malik Willis will have the opportunity to rise to the occasion yet again. Willis won both of his starts against the Colts and Titans, then was able to lead Green Bay to victory last week against Jacksonville in Love’s absence. Coincidentally, all three of Willis’ wins have come against the AFC South, the division that traded him away to the Packers.

On the year, Willis has 39 passing attempts for a 74.4% completion percentage with three touchdowns and zero picks. He has a passer rating of 130.3. He’s also a threat with his legs, rushing for 137 yards and a touchdown, averaging 8.6 yards per carry.

While Love absolutely gives the Packers the best shot at winning on Sunday if he’s healthy, Willis has beyond risen to the occasion to keep the Packers competitive in Love’s absence. Green Bay doesn’t get to six wins without Willis and the incredible run he’s been on as Green Bay’s backup.

Use the “wrong” word long enough, it will end up in a dictionary anyway. Or, at least, it becomes common enough to be accepted. But, I get the frustration.

They better figure out a way to cover the tight end better than they did last week or LaPorta will end up with ten catches. Tip: Do not use Walker to cover the tight end!

Good summary. This game makes the difference for the rest of the season between being a serious contender versus chasing the leader and hoping for a chance. If they can't win this one, there is less chance going into Detro to win....so....the hill only gets steeper to the post season.

GB has been impressive when facing juggernauts in the past. Mistake free football is the key. Wiping out big plays due to holding calls and illegal formations...just kills psychology of momentum. No room for errors....GB can win. Dan Campbell always has his teams ready to play and has tricks and traps in his chess game. Can MLF match him in cunning and wits? Detro will rightfully focus on stopping the run. Will GB oblige them from the beginning, trying to "establish"? Or does MLF change up, twist and catch the cat right out of the opening gate? So....the keys to the game is MLF and Saleh. Maybe this is where we gain the most from Saleh....help MLF break some patterns of the obvious.

Lambeau lost its fear factor quite a while ago. This one might be asking too much of the team right now. Unless MLF can come up with something special. I'm always hopeful (but not confident).

It would hard to be enthusiastic about the game given the list she just gave, but I choose to look at the Lions stats as though they've been earned while being played against poor teams that were under preforming. Most of them were.

The Packers can earn this victory and remind the Lions who they are and where they're playing.

Well...but pack played poor teams and barely eeked out a win. I am enthusiastic about a win precisely because maggie's list is pretty accurate that a win it is improbable. Then.... what the hell....if you're already probably going to lose in normal game plan.....then you throw caution to the wind, and if you lose on the new risk/reward scenario....so be it.

Yes this is a repeat as the last article was not up long after I made it.

This is a game where it appears the Packers will not win. I know any team can win in the NFL after all the Browns won last week. I do not like playing players who are hurt especially soft tissue injuries that can be aggravated or could cause other injuries as they are compensating for the injured muscle.

The Packers are playing a very good team. This is a good game to see what the backups can do. They need to see what Willis can do when he is playing a good team and has the game plan made for him that allows him to do what he needs to do. Let's see what he has to offer. We also need to sit Myers. I do not like rotating players to fill in a hole on the O-line unless it is the last resort. Start Monk let's see what we have. We should be moving on from Myers next year so let's see what Monk brings to the table. Brooks should be RB2. I like Wilson but it appears Brooks is better.

On defense if Alexander is good to go it will help a lot as I am sure Williams will not be able to play. It will be nice to see Bullard in action the whole game. Being as the front four have been sitting on the bench eating Haribo Gummy Bears we need to five or six guys a lot. Put Walker in as the Will and Wilson as the Mike.

Let's see what this team has it might help in the second half of the season.

I've been surprised by how many posters here have suggested that the Packers should not put their best players on the field in this game. This is a home game against our biggest division rival. Elgton Jenkins is the backup center. We already know that, but you want them to play Jacob Monk, who is the #3 center at best (and possibly #4 after Sean Rhyan) and is a rookie 5th round draft choice who has not yet seen any meaningful NFL action. This is in a battle for first place against the best team in the conference.

We need to play our best players, including Jordan Love, as long as they are not at great risk of becoming more severely injured. I hope the coaches and players want to win this game more than some of the fans do. The Packers are in danger of falling two games behind the Lions, with a head-to-head loss to them in Green Bay, plus a loss to the Vikings in Green Bay. That wouldn't be the end of the world, but it's a situation that should be avoided if possible. I also don't like the message that would be sent to the team and the rest of the league if this game is used as a tryout opportunity for backups. The coaches aren't going to do that, nor should they.

I am not going to disagree with using the best players but if you move Jenkins to center you have to move other players. If you insert Monk that is it.

The Packers aren't the only team that shuffles O-linemen when there are injuries. You usually suit up just eight of them for a game, so you can't just plug and play. If Monk is really ready to play center, it would be great to put him in there if Myers can't go. But I haven't seen anything to suggest Monk is ready yet. At this point, I would rather have Jordan Morgan on the field than Monk.

Morgan would take Jenks spot. That not much shuffling...especially since Morgan has played snaps at LG. Alternatively Rhyan could go to Center and Morgan replace him.

I believe the OL may be better with those 5 anyway...especially in the run game I believe the Packers will lean on...shorten the game with long clock chewing scoring drives.

When Myers missed a handful of snaps a couple weeks ago, I think Jenkins slid to C and they put Rhyan at LG and Morgan at RG. Admittedly, that was all "in-game" and I think Monk was inactive, so they might do something different with a week to prep.

"""I've been surprised by how many posters here have suggested that the Packers should not put their best players on the field""

I think you want to put your best team on the field, the one you think gives you the best chance to win. But "best team" is not always the same as "best players"

Monk has not played a single snap on offense, and only 34 snaps on special teams. He was inactive against the Texans. And yet some people think he'd be an upgrade to the offensive line that's one of the Top 5 offensive lines in the league? Myers is a DNP at the moment, and if he can't go, I'd wager we'll see Jenkins at Center, Rhyan at LG, and Morgan at RG. Jenkins is playing with an injury, so we're getting pretty thin on the Oline. An injury during the game is going to put people on the field that I don't want to see.

Based on what LaFleur said, I'm expecting Love to play, but that doesn't mean he'll finish. He might aggravate the injury or take another one while compensating, and if that happens, I do hope they'll quickly make the switch to Willis.

One of the posters here mentioned that Detroit hasn't played outside yet this year. I had to look that up and it appears to be true. Well, the Lions are going to be outside this Sunday, not on some fast-track carpet, and it's going to be cold, wet, and probably windy. They're not going to score 40, they probably won't score 30, and they're in for their toughest game of the season so far, IMO.

The Packers can win if they don't make any huge mistakes like turnovers or dumb penalties at the wrong time. Limit the Lions' run game and get pressure on Goff and make his life miserable all game. We should be able to move the ball on their defense. They're good but not great. And be ready for the trick plays like the fake kicks or running back passes downfield.

The Lions have played teams with a cumulative 24-28 record. With the exception of the 5-2 Ugly Purple, every team they have played has a .500 or losing record. 4-4 Tampa Bay defeated them.

The Pack has a 30-31 cumulative record of teams played. They defeated the 6-3 Texans and their two losses came from the 5-2 Eagles and 5-2 Ugly Purple.

Lions are a good team. The Packers are too...and have held up as good or better so far. Matt and Hafley will have his men ready, I believe.

Quality depth is key for the NFL as injuries happen. Most of the Packer injuries seem relatively minor and with a Bye Week ahead, I think most, if not all will play in the most important game of the year to date.

This is a game where both teams are going to try to give the other a hard punch in the mouth early. We'll see who's successful and who weathers it.

Whether Love plays or not, I expect the Lions to clog the box and bring extra guys with regularity. Stop the run, then try to keep Willis on pins and needles or force a hobbled Love to play on the move. I think this is a defensive game plan that would be pretty natural given the Packers' ability to run the ball and QB situation. Either way, Packers are going to need to be able to take what's given and get a few shots in downfield.

I agree with this. If I were Detroit, that's how I'd attack the Packers offense.

This is the first outdoor game of the season for Detroit. Cold, wet, windy....and a field that isn't a track surface. Detroit is going to look slower, there'll almost certainly be some slipping.

Which is why I'd go for the throat and try to get some big plays through the air.

Defensively, I'd rather give up 5 yards on the ground than 8 or 9 in the air, at least for the first half. Detroit is a very good passing team. You could even say it's elite. I don't see Dan Campbell as a guy who is patient enough to grind away, and he'll want to be aggressive and throw anyway, and if we can turn a big play or two when that happens, we're going to be in great shape.

If we win the toss, we should defer and try to make it a 30 minute game where we get the ball first. This is probably going to be a close game and we need every advantage we can get.

I think Maggie's assessment is a bit more nuanced...and suggests pretty smartly that Lions are a superior team. I don't think your data is convincing that we're just as good.

However, you make a really good point....that injuries are the reality in NFL, and teams with depth are prepared. No extra handicaps are given to teams with injuries. Its not good enough to have the best starting roster in the NFL. Depth. That could give GB an advantage in matchups. Seems that has been the case so far. GB subs have done very well relative to opponents subs.

Going 'all-in' w/a compromised QB1 and injured Star Safety? Last I checked, hamstrings and groin strains don't 'heal' in 6 days just because we stamp our feet and demand it so.

Most fans have no idea what's going on in those Blue Tents, just like hospitals hide 80% of what goes on in their ER's and ICU's--general public doesn't have the stomach for it.

I'm in the Medical Biz (ER) and I will go on record as saying I am angry at some of the fans who would rather put compromised players at risk because of their need to win.

There are all different degrees of hamstring and groin injuries--from major to minor, just like most other types of injuries. It sounds like Jordan Love's and Evan Williams's injuries are minor. If they are feeling okay during warm-ups before the game, they should play.

The Packers have one of, if not the most cautious medical team in the NFL. It has been this way for decades. If they say the player can play, they will play.

I expect one or two may be ruled out by the medical team. Perhaps none. Williams concerns me the most. Alexander concerns me too. He seems to get hurt often the last two, three years.

We will know more after today and tomorrow. Being at home helps too...can sit in the tub, in rehab, rest at home and not on the plane and in a hotel room.

Who is demanding injured Packer players play? I have not read that. Who are these fans causing you to get "angry" when you know as little as other fans do.

If the medical staff clears a guy--and that kind of info rarely stays quiet--there's a lot of pressure on them to try to play: from the fans, the media, and their teammates. That said, it always comes down to how the player feels in warmups and whether they think they can contribute.

This will probably sound strange, but there are actually people who are willing to put themselves at risk. You are correct that these injuries don't heal in 6 days, but they heal enough so that the player is willing to risk it.

If I were a player, and I thought I could play, I wouldn't want to be protected from myself.

Don't underestimate the weather's impact! I read recently that the lions haven't played a game outdoors yet this year.

There's a significant difference between running your high speed offense indoors, on a fast surface, in a climate controlled environment versus running your high speed offense on a chilly, wet Lambeau field!

The weather will hopefully help facilitate our potential run oriented approach this weekend!

The latest news is that Jaire Alexander, Evan Williams, and Josh Myers all missed their third straight day of practice today (Friday), meaning they are all unlikely to play agaimst the Lions. It really hurts to be without Alexander again. The others not as much, although if there is an in-game injury at safety or on the O-line, the depth is looking shaky.

Things to watch Gb vs Detroit ... Will the loss of Hutchinson start to catch up with the lions.. sometimes when you loose a dynamic player on your team you win with emotion for awhile... but eventually loosing a player of his caliber starts to show up...
Eric Wilson has showed up and played well for Quay, but he is undersized and he will be ( man-o-man ) against Montgomery and Gibbs , will he hit them or get dragged down the field assuming he wasn't washed out by Detroit very physical off line.
Jaire Alexander vs St Brown ... will JA get caught up in trash talk and lose focus then have St brown eat his lunch to win the game.
And finally will the Packers cave in and start J Love who might start appear loose and throw well, but being obviously immobile and then get banged around will they finally go to Willis a little to late to save the game ??? Things I will watch for.

all valid questions. I might have some answers after the game....but for now....all are live questions for the curious.
