Marcedes Lewis finds new life in Packers' refreshed offense

-- A lot may have changed in Green Bay this offseason, but some faces will remain the same.

And for Marcedes Lewis' sake, enough will have changed for him to settle into more of an impactful role in the Packers' offense in 2019.

Lewis, who was a free agent for all but approximately three hours after the start of the new league year on Wednesday, will re-sign with the team on a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The soon-to-be-35-year-old Lewis was one of two tight ends picked up by the Packers last offseason -- paired with Jimmy Graham -- after spending the entirety of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But 12 seasons in Jacksonville that saw Lewis transform into just as much of a reliable pass-catcher as he was an enforcer when asked to block didn't translate to Green Bay.

He only saw four targets through 16 games and was hardly asked to pave the way in the running game, which was expected to be his primary role when signed to a deal last year. But it seems to be a universally-held belief that Lewis' shortcomings in 2018 weren't a result of him running out of gas, but simply being misused.

The Packers haven't had a successful tight end in their offense since Jermichael Finley, and his career tragically ended in 2013. It's arguable that Jared Cook, signed in 2016 for one season and on the receiving end of one of the most memorable playoff moments in recent history, disproves that. However, Cook spent most of that season battling an ankle injury and never truly became the centerpiece he was expected to be.

Graham's numbers last season were better than any Packers tight end's since Finley's 2012 campaign. But while 636 yards and a pair of touchdowns is sustainable, he was never able to truly formulate the red zone connection with quarterback Aaron Rodgers -- a replica of what he and Jordy Nelson were able to do -- and ended up playing through a broken thumb later in the year, debilitating his ability to catch.

All of those players were introduced and played under the previous regime with head coach Mike McCarthy, already putting their chances of thriving at odds.

Lewis participated in a conversation regarding the downfalls for others in his position playing in a McCarthy-led offense in January on Yahoo's 'Mostly Football' show with Martellus Bennett, another free agent tight end acquisition that never panned out.

"As a tight end, I think McCarthy's offense was one of the worst offenses you could be in as a tight end," Bennett said. "I think a lot of the stuff you build as a tight end to be productive, I think that's a lot of the reason why they haven't had an overly-producitve tight end in years there, because of the way the offense is run."

Dec. 2 marked the end of McCarthy's 13-year tenure and the start of his successor's, Matt LaFleur, began in January, offering Lewis clause to rejoin the team.

Not only does Lewis have new life under an innovative coach like LaFleur, but he also reunites with former Jaguars offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, with which Lewis played under for two seasons before coming to Green Bay.

Not that those two seasons were anything extraordinary -- sans five touchdowns in 2017 -- with just 44 total catches for 487 yards, but he has the familiarity of a former offensive coordinator and the opportunity to mesh with him in a new environment. In Hackett's case, he could very well play a role in weaponizing Lewis and maximizing what he's able to do on the back-end of his career.

Lewis also seemed like a sensible, priority re-sign for the Packers amongst their 13 unrestricted free agents. LaFleur has emphasized the zone-blocking scheme and his desire to run the ball considerably more than his predecessor, so Lewis' presence adds another big body to anchor one end of the offensive line in those situations.

As of now, no tight end on the Packers' roster is scheduled to be under contract by this time next year. That includes Lewis, along with Graham and Robert Tonyan, who saw just six targets in his second season as an undrafted free agent.

The Packers are in even better of a position to aim high for a tight end in April's draft, especially now that they've added two pass rushers -- Za'Darius and Preston Smith -- in the early stages of free agency, giving them a little less of a sense of urgency and more flexibility in terms of their draft strategy.

The Packers will certainly have another name added to the position group by the time the Rookie Transition Program comes around in June.

I agree that McCarthy just didn’t know how to use tight ends. I was excited when they signed him last year and disappointed when he wasn’t used. I am hoping Lafleur can make better use of him. Still need to draft a tight end to learn from him and Jimmy Graham.

I definitely think there’s some truth to that, BUT, how was Finley able to be successful? Was the design of the offense different for him than it was for Graham, Lewis, Cook, etc?

Finley was more in a jimmy graham type roll. Glorified wide receiver. I envision Lewis’s roll more towards blocking then coming off his block late to catch an occasional pass, if no one else is open, or the occasional design play to him. But at least some usage. 10 and 5 touchdowns in 2016 and 2017 says what his potential was if used correctly.

Finley also benefitted from having a deep WR group around him like Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson, James Jones and even Randall Cobb (as a rookie in 2011).

MM wasn’t always as inflexible or averse to playing a system irrespective of the players he had. Somewhere after the Super Bowl his system and thinking became locked into one approach. The TE perhaps suffered more in that it was somehow meant to compensate for the rigidity of the WR scheme and lack of any RB passing game.

NO, Samson says that teams gameplanned to contain Finley, so Driver, Jennings, Jordy, et. al all looked better than they were because of the attention being paid to Finley.

I think that's nonsense, of course.

Good question & point made. I don't think people appreciate how talented/good Jermike was when healthy for the Packers. What a great draft pick that actually was.

Another travesty serious injury, like to Sterling, Tim Lewis, Terrence Murphy, Johnny Jolly, Nick Collins, Jonathon Franklin (was part of the Le'Veon Bell/Eddie Lacy class and some scouts rated him above Bell), etc.....

So Finley was successful, and Graham is a bust, and Graham's worst season as a pro...last year....was very close to Finley's best season.

He caught 55 balls for 767 yards in 2011.
Graham caught 55 balls for 636 in 2018.

Absence does make the heart grow fonder, and the grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side of the fence.

So....when they had to gameplan against Finley...in 2011....did they also have to gameplan against Jordy? Jennings? Or if that's too tough of a question, let's try this one: In 2014, we led the league in offense....with Richard Rodgers at TE. Were teams gameplanning against Richard Rodgers, too?

You're good at making accusations; not so good at backing them up with any actual data.

If they want a difference maker, draft Hockenson with the #12. If the Bengals don't move on an ILB, they will probably take him @ # 11.
Maybe trade down and hope Fant is there if Washington wants to swap picks to secure a QB.

There are other guys that could be players like Sternberger, Josh Oliver, I think Irv Smith is more HB back with his height at 6'-2".

I like this signing. I still believe he'll be one of the top 5 blocking TE's in the NFL and MLF and Hackett will actually USE him in that capacity.

Just thinking of that Film Review Andrew Herman did on Hockenson and Fant a few weeks ago. NOW think about a two TE set with Lewis and Hockenson blocking for Aaron Jones.

OMG the Packers will be serving Pancakes on Sundays at Lambeau!

I agree. Over past seasons, how many times did MM say they were going to use TEs more, run the ball more, etc? As Nick Perry correctly pointed out, that flexibility exited when Philbin departed for Miami.

MLF looks to be more deliberate he and Gutekunst are acquiring in free agency. I think this bodes well for the 2019 season.

I like this move! I think LaFleur and Hackett will use Lewis more of the way that he should be used.

I know Lewis had some struggles last year, but I believe more of that was due to playing sparingly. For whatever the reason it seemed that McCarthy couldn't figure out how to use him.

In 2017 with Hackett as the OC Lewis had 24 receptions for 318 yards and 5 TD's. Last year he had 3 receptions.

I also think this is a great move because I think they will draft a TE higher. It usually takes TE's a couple of years to really develop. This will allow that guy time to develop and learn behind 2 Veterans. I think this is a really good move!

I don't understand what happened with McCarthy at the end there. He was able to utilize Finley really well and to win a Super Bowl with Andrew Quarless. Even Richard Rodgers caught 8 TDs and 500+ yards one season. And McCarthy liked having several TEs on the squad. But that all took an awful dive the last 2 seasons. Really hard to explain.

I think your reading to much into the Lewis signing. Lewis is used up. Seems the Lewis signing is about BLOCKING. My preference is to put another OT wide. I like are chances with Ronyan and Graham more. I think anyone who thinks drafting a TE early is wrong! There is so much talent on the defensive side in this draft. We still will have to much age and uncertainty on defense. And it must be addressed this year. The thinking is, someone has something left in the tank. Were sucking fumes! The DL,ILB, and Free safety have problems coming. Lewis comes cheap. But cheap doesn't get it done. Didn't we learn that with TT?

" Lewis is used up".

Maybe McCarthy did him a favor by not playing him. Essentially gave him a year to be in football condition with no wear and tear on his body.

I still like it that Gute is trying to fill the holes with affordable veterans and saving his draft ammo to build the future. Think he is right on track.

He's a blocker. He blocks. Pretty darn well, still. Added to the starting guard we got in free agency it makes it more likely that we might not finish last in rushing attempts this year.

We'd have to run 7 more times/game just to be average.

Lewis can pull it off for another season given his snap count. Y-type TE who can put a beat down on Barr or Mack if necessary. Gutekunst can get his guy at TE in the first round. The TE group is better than the WRs in this draft. Control the clock, move the chains then strike like lightening inthe RED ZONE.

Now that we have signed Lewis we should draft either Hockenson or Fant. Lewis and either Hock or Fant in 2 TE sets. We could have a 7 man OL and run some good old fashion power football. Then we can chuck Graham and save some cap space.

We can go with Lewis, Tonyan and Hock or Fant and we'll be fine at TE.

Even with an early pick for a TE we can still pick up a DL and an ILB within our first 3-4 picks. Thanks, Since '61

I really am Against you guys on TE. I'm glad you finally saw the light with DL. But DL projects; are after rd.1. Drafting a TE to sit the bench behind GRAHAM DOESN'T WORK. (Who has 2 more YRS.) Gute saw the light with the signings. Now he must NOT give in to the Fantasy of your thoughts; on TE. The OL positions are the most banged up in the NFL now. So the people begging for OL, do have merit. The new draft mocks for GB still don't match up with whats needed. So lets put it out there. Oliver/Wilkens/Lawrence, over Hoek/WR. The Cap money is to tight to resign Wilkerson/Mathews ,Breeland. And it won't be easier next year, when it comes to Lowrey/ Daniels/Martinez !!! @30 Bush/Simmons/Adderley make more sense then Fant. @44 OL or WR , Not TE. We have No #2 Wr. .@75 OL, or any small school LB. The Frackwell, Gilbert, etc. won't fly! The packers must return to the glory years of a great Defense. It won't with Hoek,Fant,or Smith.

You think their weapons?( Over a OL . Yes.) But Free Agency just changed this teams thinking. And you guys need to change your thinking. Gute got players for the playing field. Not the IR or Bench. Fant will be lucky to see 10 plays a game. And Rodgers is not going to a Rookie. ( without going to whose in front of him on the depth chart.) So you just wasted a pick! The first three picks must be starters. And they must be defense after what Gute signed. . Gute got the OL he wanted. He got starters. So=== Who will start if Drafted?!!! It won't be a TE. It won't be a WR. It might be 1 OL. The new thinking is "draft and conquer". You draft Wilkerson's replacement first! You draft a ILB second. You draft a FS third. And we have had OL start that were picked later. Don't MELT. Draft Courage!!!

"We could have a 7 man OL and run some good old fashion power football. Then we can chuck Graham and save some cap space."

They are paying Jimmy Graham a $5.3 mil roster bonus that is due tomorrow.

If he collects that bonus, he ain't going anywhere until after he flops again in 2019. And the Packers will have given him another $9 mil in cash and cap that translates to bad value on the field, in addition to the $13.25 million in cash and cap they wasted on him last year.

We're down to the wire for sanity to prevail inside 1265. I presume the date means that if he's on the roster at 12:01 am, he's collecting. It's 3:30 pm as I type. So there is about 8.5 hours left for someone to knock some sense into Gute. I hold a tiny sliver of hope.

I think we need a RB ,only 2 on roster, because we have plenty of receivers. However, if a talented receiver falls to us then we have no choice.

A power back would be in order. My guy is Benny Snell. Has a game like Frank Gore. He put the hurt on Alabama and the rest of the vaunted SEC defenses.

I'm not a fan of how Gute is handling TE. Demetrius Hill just signed for 2 yrs, $6 mil. I would have preferred him to anyone that was in GB last year. Especially at the price. Maxx Williams is another young guy that might be available at a good price.

The narrative is that ML will make better use of the TEs and thus they will be more effective. Ok, that's fine. I can buy into that notion. But it holds true for anyone, not just the guys that were in GB last year. And I think they can do better from the perspective of talent to cap space ratio.

Oh well, there is always the draft and TE is said to be very deep.

I didn't like the Graham signing last year given his cost (3-year $30M) and age (31).

I thought it would have been much more prudent to spend less to bring in two younger guys who still possessed potential upside. But, I understood that they were trying to replace Jordy Nelson's red-zone production and Jimmy seemly would have been a solid replacement for that production.

Personally, I thought Gute should have targeted Austin Seferian-Jenkins (2-year $10M). And once Eric Ebron (2-year $15M) got released from the Lions, him too. But, that was just my opinion. I just think if you're going to spend in Free Agency I don't think it's wise to spend big on guys over 30.

Jenkins had a drinking problem. Ebron dropped to many balls in the clutch. Graham was suppose to still be able to run 4.6. He did have broken thumb. He'll be good this year.

Ebron may have dropped too many balls in the clutch but he was far closer to being worth the price Indy paid than Graham was. L was right on Ebron, and Graham and wrong on Jenkins, He's 2 of 3. Gute was wrong on Ebron and Graham and right to pass on Jenkins. He's 1 of 3. L for GM. He's got a better batting average.

Good point.

Ebron was a still-young talented TE who was a recent very high draft pick (picked before Odell Beckham), who didn't pan out in the Lions offense.
Goes to Indianapolis, and blossoms into a stud leading all NFL TE's in touchdowns right away.

Maxx Williams was another talented TE taken a year after Ebron, early Rd 2 by the Ravens. He also hasn't panned out on that terrible passing offense with the now-castaway Joe Flacco. Someone is going to get a bargain on Mad Maxx and I agree with the previous poster on him. I'd take Maxx & his $$ & his age over Jimmy Graham, who never could come up with the high catches in the end zone like we hoped would be his strength. And all 2 of Rodgers Ints' went off Graham's hands.

Give me Maxx, Lewis, and one of those good 3 in the Draft (Irv Smith Jr or 1 of the Hawkeye TEs).
Tonyan if we keep 4. Jimmy ain't getting any younger or better sadly.

Graham needs a little slack. If he wasn't getting 10 mil. you wouldn't want someone else. How many times in Professional sports do we see Big names have trouble their first year changing cities. Lots and Lots. The change helps some. But many have a comfort zone. Their not use to being scrutinized. They mess up. Some never re-cover until they change cities again. Graham is having to deal with how Rodgers throws the ball. They gave Adams time. Graham and Rodgers only need chemistry.

I believe he hurdled Barr earlier in the year. He was usually doubled in the
red zone because the Pack had one other threat in Adams who is in his prime. When you have two viable TE threats to work the endzone better things happen. Hoping they bring inone of the Iowa players or maybe they move to the lower rounds for Sternberger or Josh Oliver. In any case they need the second threat. Tonyan is a big WR. He had a play and then some drops. Get a guy trained at the TE position.

"If he wasn't getting 10 mil. you wouldn't want someone else. "

That's right. I would not. Cheap vets are a different thing than pricey ones. But he is getting $9 mil this year. So he needs to produce, not have excuses made for why he needs to be cut slack.

And the point you raise about the chemistry between Rodgers and Graham is another thing that is really beginning to grind my beans. Why in the happy heck does Rodgers need years to be able to be productive with new pass catchers? He's paid a fairly hefty sum himself. Shouldn't he be able to find a way to avoid red-shirting every new acquisition, vet or rook, before producing with them? I hope ML rips Rodgers a new one in every film session where Rodgers holds back hitting an open guy just because he doesn't "trust" them.

Well I'm going to feel better seeing Lewis lined up on Macks side this year. No reason he can't grab 4 TDs either.

If Breeland is resigned, hope the draft goes:
1) Hock / Fant
2) Dillard / Taylor / Williams / Risner
3) Best available pass rusher
4) RB

Doug,
Why would the Pack want Hock who isn't nearly the athlete Fant is? Hock isn't as fast, isn't as strong, isn't as athletic, and isn't as explosive as Fant. If they wanted Hock than they would likely have not signed Lewis. Period!

The Pack do not need an outside WR but they do need someone who can split the middle and in the red zone. Yes, a good TE with speed and agility would be ideal along with a twitchy slot receiver. Fant is a hybrid WR who fits everything that would open up the Packers offense allowing it to hit on all cylinders. Furthermore, if Geronimo and the 2nd year receivers all take a big step and if LF is really assessing how to utilize the WR talent a real possibility would be to move Adams into the slot as he would truly be unstoppable with his size, first step, his strength, his moves, his hands, and his leaping ability. There is no one on the team that would fill the slot role better than Adams. Now the key would be has MVS and St. Brown along with Geronimo developed well enough that they can afford to move Adams inside?

"Hock isn't as fast, isn't as strong, isn't as athletic, and isn't as explosive as Fant"

He not that far off. Fant has a 9.89 RAS number. Hock is 9.17. Both are elite athletes for TEs.

Of the TE RAS number's I've seen, Hock is 1 and Fant is 4. (Foster Moreau and Kahale Warring are 2 -3)

Hank,
Could care less what RAS scores they have.
If you watched the Scouting Combine you would see Fant out performed Hock considerably in every physical category I mentioned. Much faster, athletic, considerably stronger in bench Press 20 to 17 reps. More explosive measured by both broad jump and standing still jumps by several inches. From a pure athlete perspective Fant is the guy. Assuming by everything I have read Hock is a better blocker but Fant is decent. Think about it if Fant has a stronger upper body as well as lower body (as defined by broad jump and standing jump) Fant has the capability to be a good blocker should he want. Instead he is the TE meant to get further down field. I stand by my assessment of Fant as I watched them both with great detail. I think Fant gets drafted first. I also think if Packers go for one of them and both available they take Fant for reasons explained above. If they draft Fant than the resigning of Lewis makes a lot of sense. Who better than Graham to mentor Fant?

Edit: That is if the Packers keep him as you point out after tonight. I think they do!

No doubt that Fant is the superior athlete. I wasn't trying to say otherwise. Just that Hock is not exactly a slug, either.

Loved the passion in your point. Good stuff. I've been leaning toward Hock but that was a nice argument for Fant. I definitely agree that concerns about Fant's blocking are being over-blown.

Why not both? I could see a scenario where Hock is the choice at 12. And if Fant is sitting there at 30, he might be the BPA. There were be lots of panties in a twist if it played out like that but mine would be fine.

Now the real question Hank would be if Kyler Murray was available at 12 and Gute selected him how would you feel?

Really good question. Let's just say I think I would not be a fan of the choice but not a very vocal critic either. You never really know how you'll react to a situation until you're in it. But that was the way I reacted when Rodgers was picked.

The outcome would define Gute's legacy in GB for good or bad.

I have been a huge draftnick long before it became a THING! What I grudgingly have learned is more often than not the Packers draft other than who you wanted. Sometimes the guy I wanted turns out to be a better player and sometimes the guy they pick turn out better. I have learned to to take everything in stride.

Personally I would like Burns, Oliver, or White at 12. Otherwise, move back a few for possibly Fant. However, Fants stock took a huge upward swing at combine and he likely will go early. Probably around 12 or 16 IMHO.

However, if Kyler fell and drafted by Pack I would be amused, interested, excited, and extremely curious heading into training camp. Camp couldnt come soon enough. No other player would generate the heated debates, nor would the national pundits stop focusing on the Pack with Murray. Murray would be a lightning rod! It would make training camp a circus! I think Gute following FA success and having #30 he has the luxury of grabbing a BPA luxury pick he didnt have a few days ago and why I asked the question.

I used to support McCarthy a lot, and rip on Teddy.

But I really believe with the talent the 2010-2016 teams had, that Belichick the coach would have gotten those teams to 2 or 3 more Super Bowls.

That 2014 team assembled was sensational on all sides of the ball.

The 2013 team should have beaten the 49ers.
The 2012 team offense was still great but Capers gameplanned the 49ers offense with Kaepernick like that QB was Bernie Kosar or Lynn Dickey in the pocket, and not a track guy at QB.

I'm still sad by the wasted 5+ years...... some great regular season wins. And great moment in Dallas with the 2 Crosby FGs for the playoff win. But "what could have beens"....

But now it's a NEW ERA!

at 12 we might still get an edge rusher that cant be passed up but if Devin White or Bush are there at 12 the Packers have to take either one, adding one of the Devin's in the middle will put the defense over the top so then with 30 and 44 they can still address Tight End and safety but you can be sure if Hockson, Fant and Irv Smith are still there at 30 and the Packers pass you can be sure the Patriots will take the best tight end on the board to replace Gronk. I like Irv Smith he is a beast but we will see.

I'm happy to see Lewis back since he was barely used at all last year. Plus, Graham can't block and Tonyan is young and inexperienced. Basically, Lewis is our best option for any kind of a blocking TE.

That said, we still must draft a TE with one of our first 3 picks. Fant, Hockenson or Irv Smith should all be available to us during one of our first three picks.

Having had several weeks to ponder the scenario of taking a TE with one of the 2 first round picks, here's some random thoughts:

1) Do the Packers really keep 4 TE's on the roster? That's a bit extravagant! If they snag the coveted TE @ #30 do they keep or cut Jimmy G?

2) The scenario that would position the Packers to consider taking a TE with #12 would mean that they would be leaving a number of difference making Edge, Oline, Dline of LB on the board. Possibly trading back a little and snagging an extra round 2 pick (IF ABLE!!) would balance that value equation.

3) Turner on the Oline, now Lewis. The power sweep is definitely back on the menu in Green Bay. This may be an indicator that an Olineman will be picked earlier than people think.

4) With both Smith's contracted for 4 years, depending on how the draft falls, does this mean that the Packers don't think that they will get good value @ #12 in Edge and are eyeing more of a developmental Edge rusher (like Jachai Polite) a shade later in the draft?

Thanks Hank, I forgot about Jimmy G's roster bonus. Well if he's on the team tomorrow then Hock or Fant would need to fall into the Packers laps late in Rd1 or 2 for them to be picked.

Stating the obvious, the Packers have clearly doubled down on insurance policies of positional needs to give them free reign in the draft.

$3.5 M 1 year "prove it" deal - vs Amos' 4-yr $37 M

I'm not sure where he got the reportedly weird ideas about Packers being a churn-and-burn team, but if things had been different then there's $33.5 M that he's left on the table for that misconception.

In doing some research into the "why did he fail" I noticed that his Wonderlic score was 15 (Safety average is 19). I'd be interested to know what his vision was like too, as I wonder if his proclivity to get caught out of position was anchored to not seeing and diagnosing the play well enough - hence perennially being a step behind.
