McCarthy\'s Breaking Point

You can tell the Favre saga has gotten to McCarthy. It must be hard for him, as he spent a lot more time with Favre over the last two years than anyone else in the organization. I had thought, once things started getting out of hand, that McCarthy would, at some point, try to reign things back in and make the case to Thompson that they could somehow bring Favre back.

Apparently, he had thought about just such a thing right up until Favre spoke to the media on June 20th. From John Clayton, over at ESPN.com:

According to a source, Favre didn't help his chances of returning when he mentioned to the media on June 20 that he was hoping the Packers would grant him his release at the same time he was telling his coach he wanted to play for his old team. Had Favre simply told McCarthy he was 100 percent committed to coming back to be a Packer, McCarthy might have tried to broker his return. After McCarthy heard Favre's unclear message, according to a source, the coach decided he had moved on and was ready to commit fully to playing Aaron Rodgers.

Hardly Earth shattering stuff, but it is interesting to note that McCarthy had thought about trying to mediate a peace between the two sides. That is, until Favre tried to play it both ways...
