How about Mikes' best and worst decision on 1 play. Late in the 4th quarter down by 7, 4th and 6 roughly? McCarthy decides to kick the FG. Trusting his defense to get the ball back..

If Packers defense doesn't get the stop and they don't come back to score a TD that decision would have been the worst decision.
But since the defense made the key stop, the offense eventually got the game winning TD, it now is considered his best decision.

Its funny that the difference between a great decision and a bad one comes down to the hustle by TJ Lang to fall on a fumble. And a number of other great plays made by the team.

The Football Outsiders guys were debating whether or not he should have kicked it or gone for it. Their gut feeling was that going for it was the better play, but then one of them punched it into their chance-of-winning calculator, and it turned out to be a 50-50 wash. So I guess there was no clear-cut answer there. Glad it worked out!

Those calculations assume replacement level offenses.

The truth is that if they go for it and make it and score a TD, the game is tied with enough time for the Dolphins offense to go down the field and kick a Game Winning field goal. They would have been more aggressive in the passing game which we could not stop. By only going for 3, the Dolphins played it safe by running the ball and our D was all over that. I'm still surprise Tannenhill threw the incompletion on 2nd down. If he takes the sack, there is less time for Rodgers to score a TD. Going for 3 was the correct call.

"The truth is that if they go for it and make it and score a TD, the game is tied with enough time for the Dolphins offense to go down the field and kick a Game Winning field goal."

That's my thinking too. At first I didn't get it/was upset. But then I came around to it.

Extremely faulty logic there. There were 4 minutes left, and the Packers had a timeout. If you kick to them and play defense, you could just as easily get a turnover as you could give up a FG. If you're assuming a defensive stop, you have to assume it in all scenarios. Basically you're saying Mike trusted his defense to get a stop, but only if Philbin helped. There was no way to know Philbin was going to help.

I was surprised we kicked the FG, and I think we should have gone for it, too. But I'm not totally sure I agree with the part about "Mike trusted his defense but only if Philbin helped."

Nobody knew Philbin would help us out. Nobody knew Brad Jones would try to help the Dolphins with that moronic hands to the face penalty, either. Although we probably should have predicted 59 would do something stupid. It would have been 3rd and 20 with 3:15 to go if he doesn't get that flag and we likely would have gotten the ball with 2:30+ left. So Philbin and Brad Jones is a wash...kind of.

But like I said, I thought they should have gone for it. I think teams should go for it on 4th down in general more than they do, too.

2 time outs and the 2 min warning left? I had zero problems with him kicking the FG. I know a LOT of folks on Twitter disagreed with me on that one. ;)

Not sure why it double posted.

I basically was saying that no matter which way the game played out that decision was going to be considered either a great one or horrible one. If the Packers lost the game how many people would be ripping McCarthy on that decision? But they won so it is considered a good decision.

I honestly didn't like it during the kick, but after a couple of minutes I realized it was probably the smartest decision. That's why I wouldn't make a good head coach, I wouldn't think rationally enough to make those fast decisions.

Especially in football, outcome will always dictate what was and was not a "good decision." Surprise onside kick is recovered. Genius! Bypass the FG and fail to convert on 4th and 1. Idiot!

It's BS, but it's reality. Fortune favors the safe.

And that is really the point I was making. The end result of the game way to often dictates if what happened was great or horrible.

I hated that call. It worked out, but sometimes you get away with bad calls if the other team returns the favor by throwing the ball and calling timeouts for you.

With a replacement-level offense and defense, it's statistically a wash at that juncture to kick or go for it, but the Packers are well above replacement-level on offense and below it on defense, so the correct move was to go for it, hands down.

They ended up converting a 4th and 10 later under much more dire circumstances and had gone for it on 4th earlier and converted. It was a head-scratcher. You ideally put the game in the hands of your best player whenever possible, and MM refused to do that.

You think the Packers Defense is below replacement? Replacement means 2nd string talent. I think you mean below average.

I meant replacement. The Packers were below that level until this game finished, actually, and are now slightly above it, oddly enough. Still, the offense is far above that level.

I think his best decision(s) had more to do with personnel than play-calling.

I think his worst decision (...still thinking)

Mashed Potato Mike was at his best on Sunday. From the play he called on 4th down to go for it in the 3rd quarter, the call to kick the FG, trust your defense to make the stop and get the ball back to the offense for the win, On top of the way he not only stuck with the run down the stretch but rode Starks in crunch time knowing he was seeing and hitting the holes better than Lacy was earlier in the game, and finally giving the keys to Arodge and letting him orchestrate every play call at the line of scrimmage on the final game winning drive! That was an awesome day at the office for Tater! Go Pack!

Because he obviously dominates plate loads of mashed potatoes frequently. and it just rolls off the tongue beautifully. Any which way you slice it, or mashed it, he was on point Sunday!!

Oh skip cowless...................how's those Giants and Falcons looking? And the great Teddy Bridgewater? The mighty seachickens aren't looking at home field at the moment. Pretty soon you'll be signing praises of the Browns. You're a brown, the kind with corn in it.

you hurt COW'S feelings, he is working on his prediction for the Panthers game, a team with one offensive weapon, Cam . I cant wait to hear this one.

The Panthers did just hang 37 on a very good defense, and the Packers have historically been abysmal against mobile QBs, so it doesn't take Cow's pessimism to say that the Panthers game is not a gimme.

I just looked at the line for the first time. It's at 7, which really surprised me. Before i look at games i usually take a stab in my head (just for shits and giggles), and usually get pretty close. This one i figured to be maybe a 4 pt favorite +-... this game scares the hell outta me!

To compare games is senseless. Every game is different. But if we want to talk games and that the Panthers scored 37 against the Bengals, fine. That's the same Bengals D which gave up 43 points to the Patriots the week before. I doubt that D is very good.
I am living in the Panthers viewing area right now, and believe me, they are more scared of the Packers than the Packers are of the Panthers, as far as fan opinion is concerned.
