Morgan at RG Could Elevate the Running Game

Keeping Morgan in one place could pay off

After five games in the 2024 season, running back Josh Jacobs looked to be well on his way to being named one of the best free agent acquisitions in Green Bay Packers' history. In the absence of Jordan Love for two games, Jacobs helped take the pressure off of Malik Willis en route to a 2-0 record. Despite a lack of a threatening passing game early in the season, Jacobs still made his mark on offense to save the squad from being easily halted. Moving forward to 2025, it's the passing game that needs to compensate for the lack of a threatening running game early in the season.

This isn't necessarily Josh Jacobs' fault, but rather a lack of consistency on the offensive line. Injuries have caused shuffling all along the Packers' front five, and therefore have contributed to a lack of running lanes for the Pro Bowl running back. There have been a few glimpses of hope here and there, but it wasn't until Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals that things seemed to click on the ground all game long.

What was the noticeable change? Well, for one, the Packers finally had all their preferred starters along the offensive line in place. The second most noticeable change would be the move of Jordan Morgan to right guard, playing 82% of the offensive snaps at that position over Sean Rhyan.

Since the start of OTAs, it's seemed like Morgan has lined up at every spot along the offensive line except center. A first-round pick on the offensive line still not having a home entering year two is a bit frustrating for the fanbase to see, but it's also a testament to Morgan's versatility and the confidence the team had in him to put him anywhere. The reason for his movement was often due to injuries affecting his fellow linemen's ability to be on the field. But now with everyone available, Morgan received his shot at the right guard position for the majority of week 6's snaps, and you could say he never looked back.

Josh Jacobs ran for 93 yards on 18 carries with two touchdowns, and Morgan was instrumental on both scoring plays. The first, late in the second quarter, shows Jordan Morgan push former Packers' run stuffer, TJ Slaton, two yards into the end zone from three yards out, allowing Jacobs to slip right behind him for six. For those that may have forgotten, Slaton, in a Packers' uniform last year, led the league in run stop win rate amongst interior defensive linemen. Taking care of business like Morgan did in that situation against a lineman like Slaton is no easy feat. The second touchdown run showed Morgan demonstrating excellent patience coming off a double team to engage the linebacker right before Jacobs came in and slipped behind Morgan again for the touchdown.

We may have our permanent right guard and answer to running game woes.

Consistency Will Bring Success

From 2001 to 2004, the Packers had the same starting five offensive linemen. Barring injuries here and there, as a unit, that offensive line protected Brett Favre and paved the way for Ahman Green to become one of the best Packers' running backs of all time. Consistency and chemistry are keys to success along the offensive front. Those five linemen, Clifton, Rivera, Flanagan, Wahle, and Tauscher, always knew what the lineman next to them would do and could trust one another, which made them such a successful unit.

It's very difficult to keep the same starting five in today's NFL year to year, but finding that consistency and chemistry in just a span of one year can make all the difference. Jordan Morgan has shown that he works very well with Zach Tom and Elgton Jenkins, and he's shown chemistry with each of them in the small amount of snaps they've had so far. Better than we've seen with Morgan elsewhere.

In the same position, Sean Rhyan has been very inconsistent this season. This year, he may be better suited as the first man up in the event of an injury along the interior offensive line, relinquishing starting duties to Jordan Morgan. What also could push this decision in favor of Morgan is Sean Rhyan being in a contract year. Solidifying Morgan at the position would make allowing Sean Rhyan to walk a much easier decision.

Jordan Morgan will not be perfect in every facet. But if his presence can spark the Packers' running game into becoming a greater consistent threat, then the move to place him at right guard permanently needs to be made.

No to Morgan at RG.
Waste of a #1 pick.
And any reason why he was drafted.
Let's just put him at LT and get it over with.

What have you seen that proves he can play LT at a decent level? If the coaching staff believed he could outplay Walker, he would be the LT now. Draft foolishness be darned. If Morgan is an upgrade for Rhyan, play the man.

I don't believe Morgan can out play walker. (Yet)
I don't believe they will resign walker @LT.(Period)
I believe Walker can play RT or LT.
Which makes him a excellent back up.
I would rather have him signed then lose him.
But that isn't how Gute does business.
And Business can keep a team out of the super-bowl.

If GB was $50 million UNDER the Salary Cap, your point would make sense. But they pay their players as well (or better) than any team in the league.

So your constant harping on them being too cheap is ridiculous.

There is no constant harping.
Gute over-pays, was my point.
And when the injuries mount.
The next man up isn't a strength.

They want the best 5 on the line and that includes Morgan so not a waste. Especially since there’s a good chance he takes over at LT next year.

truthfully I agree.
But there is no job appreciation
for Walker.
He's gone against the NFL best lately.

Stock... Morgan has to stay at RG for now and maybe the year, he might now or maybe later there best run blocker. I agree LT next year after camp. Walker has digressed after a good effort last year and is showing his 7th round pedigree.

I bet if they started over in camp it would be

Walker Jenkins Tom Rhyan Morgan. From left to right

However Banks played ok last game

I would go after Cody Mauch from Tampa bay next year once he’s healthy for other guard spot

I like Morgan at Guard—he’s proving himself.
Move Ryan to center and return Jenkins to a guard position.
If we get this run game moving again, we’ve found our identity and the pass game will become easier.
Go Packers!!!

If we move Jenkins back to LG, does that mean we would sit Banks? His contract and the perception would make that an interesting decision. Not sure how kindly Gute would take that decision, even if it would be the best way to solidify the OL.

Right now I’d say we need a G and if that is Morgan or anyone we just need to let them settle into the role for themselves and their neighbors benefit. Where Morgan plays next year is a concern for the future.

It seems Rhyan is allowing too many pressures. Morgan is on an upward trend and Rhyan is ??

Another reason for the improvement is the talent level of the Bengals.

This is likely true. One game doesn’t prove anything but it does suggest that the player should get more opportunity to show he can continue to perform.

Morgan did a good job on Slaton, the Packers best run defender last year. From the stands it seemed as Morgan got more snaps next to Jenks and Tom the run game improved running to the right.

Why? Because of this statement in the article...and its a good one: "Those five linemen, Clifton, Rivera, Flanagan, Wahle, and Tauscher, always knew what the lineman next to them would do and could trust one another, which made them such a successful unit."

I rewatched the game and it was clear Morgan was getting off the snap quickly and using his quickness to get to the second level. Rhyan is strong but he is not quick on his feet and gets caught up in the trash too often. If a D lineman gets his hands on him...he's done.

Pick the best 5 and work them together! "Not the 'favorite 5" or capitulating to Stenovich's desire to rotate lineman...believing the internecine, in season competitions makes both players better. It doesn't make the OL unit more successful. Even LaFleur said playing Morgan at 4 spots is not helping him develop and he should practice and play at one spot. Let's see if his OC gets the message.

My guess, right guard this year, left tackle next year with Walker left to walk. I do not think he does well getting flipped back and forth along the line. Hopefully we do not see any more of that.

Please find a way to move Jenkins back to lg, try banks at rg. Maybe Belton could play there. If rhyan can't play c then get tom moved there. Morgan will be lt next year right or wrong, but he'd have to play rt.
