Morgan Burnett To Miss Chiefs Game

The Packers ruled the veteran safety Out for Monday night's game against the Chiefs.

The Green Bay Packers have ruled safety Morgan Burnett Out with a calf injury for their Monday Night Football showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs.

On the plus side, they also list both wide receiver Davante Adams and running back Eddie Lacy as Probable, which means they have a 75% chance to play.

The Burnett situation is troubling, obviously. The Packers defense looked out of sorts against the run when Burnett missed Week One against the Bears.

Facing Jamaal Charles and the Chiefs without Burnett is a scary proposition. Time for Hyde and Clinton-Dix to get things sorted on the back end and for everyone up front to step it up.

Good news is Lacy and Adams are probable. That said, this week I would rather have Burnett and be w/o both Adams and Lacy.

I do NOT like Hyde + HHCD in the back and the reasons are strictly intangibles.

No. But I suspect we can put the "Training Camp Recovery Period" to rest as the magic that caused last season.

If the OLB maintain discipline in the run D, the Packers won't miss Burnett as much. Imo the problem in game 1 was Forte getting outside too easily with the ends/lbs crashing in.

On the other hand, the interior of KCs OL is much better than what the Packers faced in Chi or Sea.

It's more than just run support with Burnett being gone. We have a 2nd year Safety and a converted Safety back there.

Besides Burnett being one of the best run Defenders on the Packers D, he is also the guy that calls the coverages and gets everyone lined up after breaking the huddle. Burnett is a huge loss, as evidenced by wk 1.

Bout time you wizards realize Dix is a joke. Fourth round pick at best. Cannot tackle or cover. I gave up after watching him uncover Lych in the vend zone for an east TV. So if he is our hope, start praying.

Why is this guy allowed to continue to post on Cheesehead TV? I go to a Bears site, make one negative comment and get banned. Does he need to post "I hate the Packers" for the powers that be to get it? I respect peoples opinions but when it's this obvious he's not a fan it's time for the boot.

You get banned on the Bears site because what you say is true. Fubared just posts his wishes and fantasies here.

For most of his career, Dix has been a joke. And I have been a Packer fan since '59, do you want to ban me too? Last week Dix looked much much better so maybe the criticism of his tackling technique finally got his attention. Fans should apply the heat when it is deserved. Otherwise we get 30 years in the wilderness, remember? People like to blame Bostick or Peppers or Matthews for last year's meltdown at SEA but it was really Dix who was most responsible - remember he looked like he was running in quicksand when he let a wounded duck pass on a 2 point play late in the game not only get caught but missed the tackle on top of it.

You homers are something - you don't want to hear constructive criticism when warranted but when a Packer becomes an ex-Packer, you circle the wagons and say he was no gone anyways. Packer fans used to be much classier and more knowledgeable than that. Some still are but they are fewer and fewer.

"Fans should apply the heat when it is deserved. Otherwise we get 30 years in the wilderness, remember?"

Ha ha ha - you're right. Without fans gettin' mad in blog comments, we'd be back to the Packers of the 1980's. XD

This is better than anything I've read on the JS Comments.

LMFAO!!! Are you serious? For most of his career??? He's played a total of 20 NFL games! I don't know dude, maybe you'd prefer MD Jennings to come back. HHCD has doubled passes defensed in 16 games that Jennings made in 47.

I don't want you banned either Archie. I enjoy your pessimistic view, makes me grateful.

"For most of his career, Dix has been a joke."

What career? He's in the 3rd game of his 2nd year! He hasn't had a career. Did you see Nick Collins as a rookie? That was a joke. Clinton-Dix is much further along than Collins was but Nick turned out to be pretty freakin good. How about if we let him, you know, get the beginnings of a career before judging his career!

BTW the NFCCG against Seattle looked pretty freakin good from where I'm sitting!

It seems like just yesterday a significant percentage of Packers fans were complaining about how useless Morgan Burnett was. Amazing how quickly fans can have a huge change of heart.

I'm a fan of Burnett, but I'm not sure Morgan Burnett was necessarily the difference between performances vs. the Bears and vs. the Seahawks. I don't think Morgan Burnett makes each defensive player physically make tackles, for example, Burnett being on the field doesn't suddenly make Clinton-Dix wrap up a ball carrier as opposed to trying to torpedo him with a shoulder. I also don't think Morgan Burnett makes the LBs and DE's stay disciplined and not over-pursue plays.

Yes, I think the defense is better with Burnett playing. Yes, I think people are over-exaggerating his influence on the entire defense.

I think the biggest difference between week 1 and week 2 was players watching how poorly they played in week one, and not being particularly fond of looking like garbage and the verbal lashing they likely took all week because of it.

Call it a hunch.

I will add in this little tid-bit.

The way Dom Capers calls a game IS influenced greatly by how confident he is in his safety play.

This can be charted back through the years.

So, in that regard, I will concede that if you want aggressive blitzing from our defense, it's more likely to happen with Burnett on the field.

I agree about Burnett. Just a year ago, most fans were done w/ him and wanted him gone and called him a crap player and WAY over paid. I always defended him to some degree, tho I didn't think he was great, he was a good player or better being dragged down by the garbage at the other Safety.

Burnett doesn't make everyone else better w/ his play. But he has become one of the Packers best run defenders and is pretty good in coverage. I think he is instrumental in getting players lined up correctly after they break the huddle. The ILB generally call the plays in the huddle and have some responsibility for getting the DL aligned correctly, but Burnett is highly involved is getting the LB and DB's lined up correctly in both run and pass D. No matter what his communication and experience are really important to the D. I wouldn't discount his impact quite as much as you seem to.

Surely he wasn't the only reason the D was poor against Chi, but his return in wk 2 was a pretty big factor IMO.

In 2013 I was one of those people who felt he was grossly overpaid. If you look at his stats they would support that as well. Last year was a entirely different story though, especially after the bye. In week one there were quite a few wide open receivers running through the Packers secondary, last week not so much. IMO Burnett has a lot to do with that because of the communication is there.

This is really simple: folks berated Burnett because he played a below average SS and was being paid a lot. If the reason was because his fellow safeties were terrible, that doesn't change his level of play. Plus, he signed an extension in 2013 (that is, he was not a FA, he was still on his rookie contract) and promptly laid an egg. Folks changed their tune when he started to play closer to the level of his contract in 2014.

Personally, I would suggest that Burnett is above average in run defense and so-so in coverage, meaning that a bad FS next to him makes him try to do things that don't play to his strengths.

If the OLBs can contain outside runs and keep lane discipline, we'll be ok. Other than Charles out of the backfield, Kelce is the only real passing threat on that team. Here's thinking that CM3 is covering him a lot.

I am concerned about Charles bouncing it outside and we lose lane discipline though.

Losing Burnett will hurt some, but not to the point we lose to K.C.

KC is a lot better now than the last time we played them and they beat us. But that was Romeo Crennel.

AROD is playing so great he is unbeatable at home as long as the defense plays with the emotion and enthusiasm it did last week.

To me, the other key to this game will be how well our two OTs hold up vs KC pass rush. If they do as well as last week we should win. However, covering the spread may be difficult. After 5 TOs last week, I think KC will be much better protecting the ball this week. W/o those TOs last week, KC easily disposes of DEN who easily disposed of DET last night.

3 weeks into the new season it is clear the NFC North is a 2 horse race, us and MN. I don't know what the problem was week 1, but MN and SF have gone in opposite directions since. Looks like we have an easy road game next week vs SF. But MN will be the team we go to the wire with. Great defense, run game and a QB who is mobile and smart with the ball. Sounds like the formula that has given GB fits the last few years.
