My One and Only Packers 53-man Roster Prediction 2020

Jersey Al takes his annual shot at predicting the Packers roster on cutdown day.

Here it is, my annual stab at predicting the Packers' 53-man roster. Note that unless otherwise indicated, this is what I think the Packers will do, not necessarily what I would do.

The Turk is a cruel taskmaster, and soon, 27 NFL dreams will hit a bump in the road or be ended completely.

It's never a fun day, but it is a fun exercise to try to predict the outcomes. Will a lack of preseason games make it easier or harder to predict the roster? We shall see...

RB: Jones, J Williams, Dillon, Ervin

TE: Tonyan, Lewis, Sternberger, Deguara

WR: Adams, Lazard, MVS, ESB, Kumerow

ILB: Kirksey, Burks, Summers, Martin (then to IR)

OLB: Z Smith, P Smith, Gary, Garvin, Williams

SPECIALISTS: 3

Love it. Sunday I may go Valdheer for light. I hate a pick wasted on Bradley. Can't Hanson or Patrick snap to the kicker?

That's a pretty good attempt! Not sure they keep 10 offensive line guys though. Maybe another WR or RB or CB?

I don't see the Packers keeping 6 WR, but they might keep 6 CB like you suggest. Being able to put 4 CB on the field is essential, and having two injuries at CB isn't uncommon. Those guys are hard to find. Pulling a guy off the PS to play the 4th WR isn't a big problem if two injuries hit, and the Packers have a few guys that fit the bill this year.

That said, after Jersey Al's 5 CBs, I don't know who would be the 6th.

You always need a long snapper. He has done a great job!!!!!!

Agreed. The guy is on the roster for a couple years now...why cut him and snarl about the draft pick?

There's a very good reason why regulars on your OL depth chart don't long snap. They're far more likely to get hurt in-game (or in practice) than a dedicated long-snapper. Then where are you? If it were a good idea, everyone would do it...but virtually nobody does.

The LS is on the team for a reason. Patrick or Hanson are not 245 LBs and capable of covering on the punts downfield. Like an extra LB.

IS Nijman the future? I was hoping so. Then injured through camp. Can he clear waivers? That's the question with some of the choices that need to be made. Plus if they are thinking of bringing in Valdheer after week 1, due too contract issues with veterans that can be used if brought in after game 1, you can let Light go.

I didn't know Ramsey had that experience, if so they would of been lining him up there the and I've never heard mention of that. On paper sounds like a Raven Greene hybrid with more emphasis on run.

GB had Leglue long snap when Bradley was on the Covid list. That should tell you something.

Leglue apparently practiced his long spring while with the Saints. Seems like a logical candidate to step in. From what I read he did pretty well when called on.

Thanks, Jersey Al. Which Turner is on the Practice Squad? Sorry, I didn’t realize if we have two Turner’s?

I agree with the list. Happy to see that Runyon and Hanson both made the cut. I have seen others leave them off. Tough year to leave rookies off as they have barely been seen.

The only other one I question is Montravious Adams. He seems hurt again and will he be healthy enough. I wouldn’t be surprised by a late move to add a body on the Dline. But, what do I know?

My bet is:
9 OL Light gets cut
DL M.Adams gets cut, Hester gets his place
CB add Samuels
SF Redmont gets cut they pick a FA from the coming cuts for ILB position

Redmond was a decent deep safety with some upside in his first year in that position and a special teams standout. I very much doubt that they will go into the year without him.

Samuels is perhaps the beneficiary if Al has too many linemen. Next man up with Ento out.

Hester is injured as well. Otherwise I would have expected him to make it. Not sure at this point. I don’t know if Adams is even potentially available in the medium term. That could mean Previllon by default.

OL names are off by a few.

6 OLB.

We could go with 4 WR.

if Adams makes it, they must really like him.

I had very much hoped Hester would be a factor and make the team, but with both Adams and Hester hurt, I think they stay with their own guy with experience in Pettine's system.

I can't help but think there will be a dozen D-linemen cut better than our guys aside from Kenny Clarke. If we don't upgrade this position our run defense will be in trouble. On a positive note I believe our Rb, Olb, and Db positions have not been this strong in 20+ years.

IMHO too much emphasis is put on the D-Line. The REASON I say this is due to the Packers scheme.
1st it's a 3-4. There's tops 3 DL on the field. One of them is an Elite player.
2nd - In many circles, including PFF, the OLB are considered part of the D-Line. In those circles the Packers have one of the best D-Lines in Football.
3rd. They often only have 2 D-Linemen of the Field at Once and one of them is an Elite player.
4th - Keke and Gary will be counted on too act as D-linemen, Keke in a more traditional sense and Gary in more of the Hybrid sense.

I'm not here to say they won't have issues with the run, what I am saying is the solutions aren't necessarily in getting what we often think about as a D-Linemen.

LB play needs to improve, OLB's need to be more assignment focused, CB's need to support the run better (Possibly a reason Tramon isn't signed) AND Lowery and Lancaster need to step up after a poor 2019.

Last is the DC being abile to scheme and adjust in game better, they were very predictable last year, does he now have the horses too make adjustments?

Nice, insightful comments Coach.

It will be fun to see if Pettine and this D can keep growing. They made a big jump forward last season, and top 10 overall looks possible for 2020.

I believe TW's was a liability in run support and in one interview last year made some interesting comment about it and not liking putting his head into a RB.

I still say the weakest link on the D-Line is D Lowry. Watch films from last years games, the opposition always ran to his side. Make him take a pay cut otherwise release him. Obtain a younger stronger faster lineman. To bad about K Martin, sounds like he really made an impression in camp. Hope he gets back soon.

I believe Ervin will be that versatile guy backing up at both WR and RB allowing the Pack to go light at WR, so they can keep Dexter on team.

TC was almost unnecessary to compile this list. Perhaps TC helped Summers and Garvin.

Almost anyone > Kumerow. Prefer Begelton, Shepherd, maybe even Turner.

Montravius stinks. He just got out of a boot. Hester did nothing. Waiver wire here.

I do think it will be easier to get UDFAs through waivers. I have some concern about OLB Tipa and CB Samuels. It isn't clear that Hollman got one iota better, and the jury is out on Jackson despite the coachspeak. Tipa Gileai probably will clear waivers as will Randy Ramsey.

In all honesty though, when does a central DL shine in TC? Usually they show up in full contact, good or bad.

Like it or not, we won’t know where Keke and co are till the games. For that reason I don’t write Hester off if healthy or rule out Keke having more impact after his work on his body in the off season.

This is a problem with no preseason. Some positions show almost nothing without hitting while others look much better without it.

A few random thoughts:
I like Begelton, he reminds me of Antonio Freeman, but people axing Kumerow for Begelton are forgetting that Kumerow is a great blocker and ST player and knows the offense and is only slightly older than Begelton. I'll be surprised if Kumerow is cut.
To our eyes, the DL is a mess, but maybe Lowry and Lancaster can adequately play the run as long as the LBs do their jobs. It was implied several times that the 49er's success was due to LBs freelancing too often. (Z apparently has some Clay Matthews to his game...).
Galeai is very fast, but he has a college reputation of also not following the scheme. He seems the type of player who does well on one-on-ones but then costs you big plays in games.
At one point, back in June or so, I mused that the Packers "best 5 OL" might be Bakhtiari and Linsley plus Jenkins at RT, Lucas at RG, and Taylor at LG. That honestly looks like the best line, again, today. Going into Minnesota, the Packers need a RT who is GOOD at either run blocking OR pass blocking--either one can be emphasized in that game, until they get their preferred starter back.
I'd keep John Lovett over several of the bottom-of-the-roster 53, like Hollman, Light, and Williams,

It is going to be an interesting couple of days especially with the PS at 16.

I think Samuels and Lovett make it to 53, maybe not initially but by Sunday

I also think they will pick up a D Lineman from the scrap heap and make one low level trade.

I'm amazed at how many people on this site comment on players as though they have actually seen them play! When they haven't!
Most of the comments here are for the most part speculation and wishful thinking. The talk helps us get excited..I know that, but really how much does any us really know about any of these new players? Little if anything!

I hear what you are saying but not entirely true. You have seen Kumerow for two years. Most watch lots of college football. So a guy like Dexter Williams who played extensively at Notre Dame is very well known. People also follow via the draft. Heck I keep referring to my Cheesehead TV Draft Guide. It’s interesting trying to play GM and most of us realize thank God we have Gute!
