My One and Only Packers 53-man Roster Prediction.

Here it is, my annual stab at predicting the Packers' 53-man roster. Note that unless otherwise indicated, this is what I think the Packers will do, not what I would do.

The Turk is a cruel taskmaster, and soon, 37 NFL dreams will hit a bump in the road or be ended completely.

It's never a fun day, but it is a fun exercise to try to predict the outcomes.

51 correct is my best score ever, 47 my worst. I think I'll be closer to the lower number on this one. Hey, that's predicting my predictions!

Here goes:.

Author's Note: Sorry folks, real job got in the way and had to rush this a bit. I originally only had 52. I added Pankey to make 53.

OFFENSE: 25

QB: AROD, Kizer

RB: Jones, J Williams, D. Williams, Vitale

TE: Graham, Tonyan, Lewis, Sternberger

WR: Adams, Allison, MVS, Kumerow, Davis, ESB(then to IR)

OL: Linsley, Taylor, DBAK, Bulaga, Turner, Jenkins, Lucas, Light, Pankey

DEFENSE: 25

DL: Clark, Lowry, Adams, Kingsley, Lancaster

ILB: Martinez, Burks, Crawford, Summers, (Sheldon or player not currently on roster)

OLB: Z Smith, P Smith, Fackrell, Gary,

CB: Alexander, King, Jackson, Williams, Brown, Hollman

S: Amos, Savage, Greene, Redmond, Sullivan(S/CB)

SPECIALISTS: 3

Crosby, Scott, Bradley

PRACTICE SQUAD:

Shepherd, Lazard, Wilkins, Carson, Pankey, (M Jones or Ramsey), Madison, Nijman, (Brown or Simon or Looney)

MISCELLANEOUS THOUGHTS:

Quarterbacks: I honestly agonized over this one. Personally, I like Tim Boyle better. But if I'm trying to predict who the Packers keep, my guess is Kizer (or both). Boyle has PS eligibility, furthering the possibility they roll the dice and hope to bring him back.

TE: I seriously considered the Packers releasing Lewis, knowing that he would be very unlikely to be picked up by anotehr team and they could bring him back is desired. That would allow them to protect another player on the initial 53 (like Boyle, maybe).

WR: As much as Shephard and Lazard have flashed, in LaFleur's offense, with much bigger roles for the running backs and tight ends, is there really a need to keep six or seven WR on the 53-man roster? As long as they have a few stashed on the PS in case of injuries, I think this is how they will go.

ILB: We all know the issues here. I'm keeping Sheldon to start, but I fully expect the Packers to work a trade or pick up a cut from another team.

CB/S: I'm keeping Redmond and Sullivan (who can play CB or S) but when Ibraheim Campbell is ready to come off PUP, Redmond goes.

One less ILB too, replaced with a WR. I doubt they'll keep 5 ILBs when many formations only take one and an extra safety a lot of the time.

Common Sense. You do have it. But the Ilbs must change. I still believe Summers is the best shot next to Martinez. I prefer Boyle but he's not the answer either. Good Roster.

Still think Boyle is a prospect. He was always going to take a while. I had hoped that his mental side would have already caught up a little more with his instinctive ability. I would think he would make the PS.

I'm in 90%+ agreement with the author.

WRs should be Adams, Allison, MSV, Kumerow, Davis.(returner). Shepherd should be on the 53, but inactive unless there's an injury. ESB should go on IR, and we'll release Lazard and Moore and hope that Lazard clears waivers and we can put him on the PS.

I'd keep 5 running backs: Williams, Jones, Dexter Williams, Carson, and Vitale. Are we serious about running the ball?

I'd keep the same 4 TEs as the author, but one would be inactive on gameday.

I agree on the line choices, too.

At QB, I wouldn't have any reservations in trusting Boyle to hand it off, make a few well-scripted throws, and run for a first down or two. I don't think Kizer has ever had it, or ever will.

Defensively, I think we're lock step. I wouldn't make any changes until somebody gets hurt. That'll be about 7:50 p.m.

I think 4 OLBs are too few. I think Markus Jones should be the 5th.

I think 5 running backs is a little unlikely, but one would be Ford if that were the case. Personally over Carson if 4 are kept plus the FB.

QB has been flogged to death, but I feel the opposite.

I just can’t see Crawford. He has been a big disappointment. Can we justify him as a pure special teamer? If not he is gone.

I do expect Gute to throw some wrenches into all of this by the time it is done.

Nice job Jersey Al. I agree with most of it, but differ in some back-end details. Here is my attempt after watching last nights game.

OFFENSE: 25 (after IR)
QB: Rodgers, Boyle
RB: Jones, J Williams, D. Williams, Vitale
TE: Graham, Tonyan, Lewis, Sternberger
WR: Adams, Allison, MVS, Kumerow, Davis, Shepherd, ESB (who then goes to IR)
OL: Bakhtiari, Taylor, Linsley, Turner, Bulaga, Jenkins, Light, Patrick, McCray

DEFENSE: 24 (before IR), 25 after IR and recall
DL: Clark, Lowry, Adams, Kingsley, Lancaster
ILB: Martinez, Burks, Summers, 'player not yet on roster'
OLB: Z Smith, P Smith, Fackrell, Gary, M.Jones
CB: Alexander, King, Jackson, Williams, Brown, Hollman
S: Amos, Savage, Greene, Redmond, Sullivan waived, then recalled after ESB goes on IR

SPECIALISTS: 3
Crosby, Scott, Bradley

Notes:
1) Bolton becomes no.3 ILB when he returns from injury to replace the 'player not yet on roster' spot.
2) Sullivan waived to allow ESB to start on the 53 (he then goes immediately to IR), then Sullivan brought back.
3) Wanted to find a place for Ramsey. He's too light for OLB, but I'd like to see him at ILB in Burks role....... but couldn't find room.
4) Compared to Jersey Al, Found spots for OLB Markus Jones, WR Darrius Shepherd, OL Justin McCray and Curtis Bolton. Crawford doesn't make the team. My prediction includes an IR, and with the spot it opens, a player is recalled. Also it includes a later return by Bolton, so it is not a strict 'On the day of the cutdown' roster.

This is my 53 man roster also except I still hold out the possibility that they go with one add'l RB (not currently on the roster) and one less WR. They put a couple of WRs on the PS in case of injury. TE and RB can split wide to take WR snaps and add versatility to the offense. If MLF is serious about pounding the rock, they need bodies to do so given the fact that neither AJ or JW saw any action during the preseason due to injuries. Maybe they go with a second FB because of the blocking inadequacy of JG and JS at TE.

Basically I just looked for a way to get Shepherd on the 53 as WR6. He has little value if Davis (on ST) and Allison (slot receiver) stay healthy (because these are the positions he backs up)...................but his value really jumps if one of them is injured. He could stay on the PS until needed, but that exposes him to another team and I didn't want to do that.

I know where you are at with another RB, but my guess is that they just get one off the street if they suffer much with injuries there. Not ideal, but every roster is a compromise somewhere.

Really well done. Simple and smart.

Fans always over estimate WRs and in addition the chance other teams are waiting for packer cuts....the good old days of tom/rob and pete and kissing up.

Clearly GUTE will be trying to game at least a couple of guys onto the PS......interesting to pair that with releasing an old non pass threat TE

It may cost cap money but flush Graham and keep excellent hands, huge catch radius, and faster target in Lazard. Graham now runs with lead weights. Lazard is a red zone TE in a large WR body. Our RBs haven't shown any reliable pass catching in real games.

It does seem hard to keep a clunky old guy in Graham and let go of a quick young guy in Lazard -- especially if Graham isn't much better as a blocker.
Also, it seems Vitale at fullback could handle similar pass-catching duties as a tight end like Graham, and maybe block nearly as well as a tight end like Lewis.
Even if I'm wrong, I'm still hoping Packer management is at least willing to think creatively and consider such alternative scenarios.

I'd like to put Manny Wilkins at #2 QB, because I think he's better than both Boyle and Kizer (aw, heck, I just did it), but doubt they will do that. I think Crosby's time has come. Fackrell doesn't deliver without a lot of help the way I believe both Jones and Ramsey do at OLB - both seem more multi-dimensional. Hate to lose Lazard, but, I am leaving open the possibility Gutekunst makes a trade from our bevy of WR talent. Keeping 10 OL is essential to keeping Aaron Rodgers upright. Been super impressed throughout all preseason by Deon Simon/s play on DL and those big guys who know how to play, and continuously make plays, that fit your system are difficult to find, so I would keep him. We don't need a 4th S immediately with the versatility in our DB room, and that ought to be fine until Campbell comes off the PUP.

Solid groups loaded with talent up and down the roster at every position.

That’s pretty good! I am obviously not in agreement on Boyle. I wish I could agree on Williams at this point. Other than those, I think we have to have another safety or two. Matthews as a Greene like ILB 3 and Redmond as a deep player.

I see you cut Fackrell. I would PS Madison and Simon to allow for safeties.

Can’t see your basis for Wilkins I must admit, but kudos for having the confidence to cut Crosby. I confess last night finally put me in that camp. It can hardly be said that he has distanced himself from Ficken. That undermines a lot of the history based security blanket for me.

So, for me, it's Crosby Still(s) so we don't (g)Nash our teeth over a Young kicker. Mason belongs in "Our House."

I wish we would have seen more from Wilkins on designed runs. He might be small, but he is fast as hell, and while I don't see him as the primary backup, I do love when teams find other ways to put their #3 QB on the field. The fact that his career YPC on carries is so low (under 2 YPC) concerns me - is it because he didn't want to give up on plays downfield and took a lot of sacks, or was it because he just couldn't find daylight when he did decide to run?

I like the selections, but would only keep 9 for the O line. I like the idea of Wilkens over the other stiffs. Deon Simon vs Fadol Brown decision on the D line. I like six for the rotation, especially in the early hot weather games in September and a veteran jettisoned to The Lions.

Yeah man. Just thinking the DB room is now ONE ROOM! I actually love that concept. No more separation between S and CB, and I think that will heighten everyone's awareness in terms of assignments, responsibilities and overall confidence. There are any number of CBs on this roster that can switch over to S, without missing a beat... Plus, Green is built for the prototype Hybrid ILB/S. Tony Brown might be too. I met the guy and have seen him up close, and the dude is a rock.

Manny Wilkins exhibits incredible poise. The game is not too big for him, like it seems to be too often with Kizer, and sometimes with Boyle. I'm an ASU Alum too, but, because of that, I've worked really hard to be impartial in these discussions. However, most don't know he had a career 135 passer rating there, and rushed for over 1000 yds. 61% completion rate in play action. 63% completion rate overall in his career, on what was a bad team. I would drop Manny into that # 2 QB slot in a heartbeat. As a matter of fact, I'll do it now....! Ha!

I appreciate your sharing your insights on this. I think this 53 is really deep too, and it protects us. Especially at OL, keeping the best players for now AND our future, with continuity in our system.

Not sure if you've keyed on Deon Simon throughout preseason, but I have. The dude is a TOTAL marauder. Rock solid. I really dig his play. Again, keep those big dudes who are effective in your system for continuity. Heaven forbid an injury at DT/NT, but that would allow some protection, again, at a position where it is hard to find those big, quality players.

Somehow, if Gutes can arrange to bring Burks and Bolton onto the roster, IR them, and keep our guys listed in this 53, that would be fantastic. Cutting them outright, with both coming off injuries, I wonder if that might not be the best gamble...? If they cleared (which they probably would), we are solid to add them to the PS? Possibly? I am completely unafraid to lose Burks... Bolton, I do like him. However, his smaller size might improve our chances of getting him on the PS.

I'd much rather have rosters with players we want the Packers to keep, and why.
If I had to decide, here are my best hunches:
I'd keep Boyle over Kizer.
My wide receivers would be Adams, MVS, Shepherd, Lazard, Davis, and either Kumerow/Allison.
At running back, I'd seriously consider keeping Ford if he's a decent blocker, over either J. Williams or Vitale.
I hope Ford and Redding at least make the practice squad.
In general, I'm looking for guys who may be extraordinary in a season or two, over guys who may be more reliable right now but without as much potential.
Even looking ahead a season to 2020 and beyond, I'd still predict -- with these players -- now in 2019 a playoff season with a 10-6 record.
After all, we have three of the best in Rodgers, Adams and Bakhtiari (and possibly add Aaron Jones) -- plus an exciting young up-and-coming defense.
Okay, I'm bracing myself for many "dislikes" -- but In all sincerity, I'm excited to learn about any players that others here at CHTV would like to make the team as mild surprises or even real longshots.
Any supporting reasons would be great, but impressions and hunches are okay, too.
Hooray for Packers football!

Agree with the sentiments. They are the same as inspire me to want to keep Nijman over the last O liner. Then it comes down to assessment of individuals.

I also think there are certain things the team is going to do absent a no brainer trade. One is that they will keep both Allison and Kumerow. Honestly I’m fine with that because Kumerow can back up pretty much everyone and is this a great depth piece. Shepherd and Davis do unique things. I can see a role for them in games even when healthy.

Lazard I struggle with. I probably have a lower perception of his route running and ability to separate, but I really see him as being surplus because of the TEs and talker receivers. We aren’t short of big targets now. Tonyan or Kumerow for me gets the route before Lazard.

It’s all pretty close. The goal is the same.

Good stuff, Coldworld, and thanks for the response.
You and Thegreatreynoldo both mark down Lazard for lack of separation and poor route running -- and you both know a lot more than me.
What I'm wondering, with Lazard coming such a long way from last season, is whether he can learn these things.
What stood out for me in a couple of receptions for Lazard this preseason was his quickness to go along with his height. (I didn't even know it was Lazard at the time, because I didn't know his number.)
***
I'm even wondering about letting go of Graham and Lewis and J. Williams to stock up on more young guys who could be special on both sides of the ball. Vitale seems like he may be like a tight end as both a blocker and pass-catcher.
***
Intriguing discussion about Manny Wilkins above, just wondering if he's even less prepared than Boyle or Kizer for this season to fill in for Rodgers.
If we traded for a veteran backup at QB, maybe keep Wilkins; or put Wilkins on the practice squad tuning up his game with possibly Lazard or Redding or Moore.
***
I hate to lose a lot of these guys for their talents, and to let go of any of them as persons. I pray them well in finding other teams, and great lives in general.
In his first year, Lombardi let go of a couple of guys who turned out to be really good. I think one was named Hawkins; the other guy excelled for the Redskins.

I believe Lazard has always been a better route runner than EQ, but not as fast. He is a post up and big body that creates match up problems. Did not watch any pre-season bouts as there is no coverage in the area. I would like feedback on his downfield blocking for the running game; a WCO staple.

I want him to bust big gains with the holes our #1 OL can clear for him. His pass protection is clearly an issue that they will work with him on. He can do it. But, his ability to cut and go decisively when he gets a hole is impressive. Was in the top 86th percentile in his draft class in "Burst."

Dexter Willams can really accelerate. Great to see, and I hope he sticks.

Add to that, Rodgers can release quicker than just about anyone, knowing his personnel groupings. Dexter can make a huge impact on this season in a good way.

COW,
You may be a little unfair! This year, Rodgers will not have to completely feel the need to try winning the game by himself. This year, he has a better defense, better WR's, possibly better RB's (Dexter and Vitale), better TE's (Big Bob Tonyan), and better OL.

I think you can reasonably say the team is definitely stronger than last year.

It's back to WCO basics with a bit of Veer tossed in. No more spread and iso routes that get saturation coverage with defenses rushing four. Now the zone run can move outside and inside. The O line has a more athletic

You do know the team kept him out, not King himself, as a precautionary measure?

Kevin King is a competitor, and I believe he is out to prove all of the doubters wrong this season - not as a main goal, but it has to be in the back of his mind, at least. King wants to win and be successful. If he remains healthy, you might be surprised at how well this defense will work. I do think we finally have adequate, high quality backups at CB, and we would be fine should he suffer another. Regardless, the guy could really help this defense, and I'm totally open to supporting him with that and his continued good health as a goal.

imagine, because the Packers higher ups wanted to protect him from needless re-injury this TC/preseason, King will be completely healthy to start the regular season.

You just don't F with those injuries. The groin and hamstring robbed him of his year two. He experienced a minor tweak this TC, and they shut him down to protect him. I'm glad they did.

"...King will be completely healthy..."

This will never be an actual thing.

He will play part of 1 game and get hurt.

53?
who cares?
only players who matter...

qb: rodgers
rb: jones
wr: adams
te: graham, tonyan
ol: linsley, taylor, turner, bakhtiari, bulaga, jenkins
dl: clark, lowry
ilb: martinez
olb: smith, smith, gary
s: amos, savage
cb: alexander

every other player is league average or below and could be replaced by a guy off the street.

6th wr doesn't matter. 5th corner doesn't matter. 4th safety doesn't matter. they're all just space - fillers.

COW, if that's true, all the more reason to look for subs who -- while just average guys now -- may have a knack for becoming something special in a season or two.
That's the fun of it all. There may be a couple or more players now under the radar who have given hints of a special talent -- such as, perhaps, that run last night by Keith Ford.
I hope the coaches are willing to take a chance on guys they perceive as perhaps having an extraordinary potential.
I'd like to know if the fans here at CHTV see any future stars among the many just average guys we could keep on the roster.
Think of it this way: Who among us, a couple of seasons ago, discerned Davante Adams as becoming a premier receiver in the NFL?

I actually had Davante rated that high.
What he had done in college was asto nishing and he had injuries and a bit of a sophomore slump, but he was developing and made the astonishing look easy even when he had his one off year.

I always thought he'd be one of the very best.

This is where you are driving the car straight into the ditch...

The NFL is a game of attrition - especially winning a SB. Your team must be deep in talent to accomplish the feat. Those "bottom of the roster" players can often contribute in enormous ways.

Green Bay lost both Donald Driver and Charles Woodson in our last Super Bowl victory, winning the game with major contributions from Jarrett Bush, Pat Lee, Howard Green... do you recall where they were on the depth chart?

Those "space fillers" helped us bring home the Lombardi Trophy.

We had 15 players on Injured Reserve.

Frank Zombo ring a bell? How about Charles Wilson? Charlie Peprah? Brett Swain? Donald Lee? Atari Bigby? Tom Crabtree?

Bears are still “kicking themselves” for letting veteran kicker Robbie Gould to leave Chicago. He was steady and proven.
It could prove the same disaster if the Packers cut Mason Crosby to try an unproven kicker in high pressure “game on the line” situations.

Dude missed a PAT in a preseason game, coupled with last years misses, and the year before. When his mojo is on it’s on, but when it’s off it’s off, and he makes too much for a kicker... in the realm of possibility GB could be thinking the same. Gould was always spot on...Mason...not so much lately.

That $3M of cap room could really come in handy in re-signing Blake and Geronimo.

i think we should make danica patrick our "first five minutes only" starting safety when we receive the kick so aaron doesn't fuck around on the first drive. if we score a quick one she is relieved of duty
