No immediate adjustments coming for Packers' assistant coaches

Don't expect any staff changes in Green Bay -- yet.

Nothing immediate is expected to come of the Packers' assistant coaches, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. Members of the coaching staff, who will spend their final day or two in the facility, are expected to be informed on Monday that their services won't be called upon until a new coach is brought on board.

That's a process that could take a good while, considering the only known interviews the Packers have conducted to this point have been with Chuck Pagano and Jim Caldwell. They're expected to give current interim head coach and former offensive coordinator Joe Philbin an interview as well.

Philbin took over as the Packers' interim coach after Mike McCarthy was relieved of his duties following a surprising loss to the Arizona Cardinals earlier this month. During his time holding this post, Philbin was 2-2.

His most recent loss came Sunday at the paws of the Lions, 31-0. It was the Packers' first shutout loss to the Lions since 1970.

One of the more notable assistant coaches, current defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, has received "strong sentiment" to be retained. If he isn't, the Packers would have had three different defensive coordinators in three years by the start of next season.

Demovsky notes that coaches currently under contract with the team, including Pettine, would have to receive permission before exploring opportunities elsewhere.

The Packers are expected to move on from special teams coordinator Ron Zook once this coaching hire is made. Typically, "Black Monday" serves as the day in which coaches and players across the league are notified that they're out of a job. It would seem as if the Packers plan on laying low and doing their research on their next head coach candidate before making any staff decisions.

The next head coach will have full control over his staff, which gives the decision to wait it out merit.

The Packers are expected to pursue Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald, according to several reports that surfaced over the weekend that were later confirmed by ESPN's Adam Schefter

At this point, there's really no rush.
The entire staff left behind by MM will be unemployed soon enough.
I'm looking forward to a new coaching regime. -- I've been waiting for this time for several years. -- 1st TT then MM & his cronies. -- Time now to look forward to the future.

Agree 100% Samson.... it will be refreshing to watch a GM with high draft picks and plenty of cap space $$, utilize ALL available means to turn this roster around. Gute will get rid of underperforming players and take a chance in free agency. Packers have many holes to fix, draft and develop won’t cut it.

All you have to do is isolate player performance.
1- vision- never saw or ignored many targets in progression

2-decisions- threw away more balls than we’ve ever seen before. Despite poor right side OL, held onto ball like it was his security blanket

3-off target throws. A lot of them.

4- many due to poor, sloppy technique and mechanics, which of course, he denied, but the tape says otherwise

Outside of the last two games, and a quarter here and there.. not a great year for arod.

Are there other issues? Yup. But why are some people pretending that #12 wasn’t a contributor to this disaster?

The MM staff is still the problem. I hope Murphy will allow all of them to seek employment elsewhere. I also question Gute’s judgement for 1) supporting the Rodgers extension and 2) accepting a GM position with no control of the HC.

Murphy does not seem to understand how to run a team. Lots of education and no street smarts. He had the authority to do something about our defense and our special teams and did nothing for years.

Murphy should have stepped in and benched our best players for the last two meaningless games. Allowing Mathews and Rodgers to decide if they will play or not was poor management and Murphy should have stepped in and not let an interim HC risk our franchise(whether the millionaire players wanted to play or not)

I’m thinking a college coach would take too long to adjust to the whole NFL HC “situation”.
A candidate with HC experience will be looked down upon as a “retread”.
I think it’s gotta be a young(ish), innovative former OC. Alpha male. Otherwise, 12 won’t listen.
But time will tell. It always does.

If Murphy saddles the HC with any of the Packers current coaches then expect the Packers to hire a joke of a HC and have a record worse than this until Murphy is gone.

In other words no decent HC capable of getting a team to the SB is going to have his coaches preselected.

I'm dubious on the Fitzgerald reports. I would fully expect the Packers to reach out, due to the Northwestern connection, just as they did with Caldwell etc. But these national reporters main source for these reports are their coach and players agents. And to say these guys don't have an agenda would be laughable. I am not banging on these guys, it just the NFL is so paranoid it is getting really hard to get accurate information out of the league these days.

Lots of these reports and interviews are done as favors to help coaches & agents out in the future. That way they can report that "______ was interviewed and considered for the Packers Head Coaching position" when in reality they were never really in consideration at all.

Personally, I think there are really only 2 or 3 people under consideration, and I think the leader of the pack is Josh McDaniels.

I don’t see any sense in a rookie NFL coach installing a new scheme for Rodgers to learn. It would make more sense to have a veteran NFL coach who is familiar with Rodgers install a scheme Rodgers is familiar with.

To be honest, bringing in a new offensive minded coach who designs and installs a scheme WITH ARod might be what it takes to focus him and get him excited about playing within an offense again.

That sounds like a prayer, or something to the effect that "nothing is impossible." Asking a college coach with no NFL experience to redesign the offense, deal with a diva QB, turn around an atrocious special teams unit, improve the perennially poor tackling, hire a new training staff to hopefully cut down on the disproportionate number of injuries, etc., etc., is really stretching it (no pun intended) IMHO.

Yes clean house. It is disgusting that the whole team played poorly. And Zook should be the first one to go. The miserable day started with Scott shanking a 25 yard punt to put the Lions in good field position. Then the fake FG!!! Where was Philbin to call a timeout?? And then let a 25 yard punt return by the Lions. And then a blocking in the back penalty on a return.

Don’t know who the eventual replacement for Rodgers is, but I know I don’t like or agree with the mindset that the packers “have to” or should go out and draft a QB high ASAP. That’s called chasing, and when you chase, you reach, and when you over extend, you can quickly lose your balance and fall on your face.

Drafting a premium position like QB In a given year just because you need a QB is a great way to waste a high pick and end up disappointed. I agree, taryn.. you let the player come to you. You can’t force it. Going for the best QB this year might net you a sub par QB.

While I don't want another Favre-Rodgers type (I think the pricetag for QBs has become too high, and I believe there are better ways to build a winner than riding it all on one man's arm), I'm not disagreeing with doing what you must to go get a player you feel strongly about. What I'm saying is, there's a bunch of people who's answer is "We need to draft a QB in the first round this coming draft". They aren't targeting a specific player, they just want the Packers to grab the highest rated QB in this draft, now. Because we need a QB. Talent levels vary from draft to draft and when you chase a position by throwing a high pick at it without regard to the actual talent level present, it's a recipe for disaster.

I have no interest in drafting a QB, and I won't until it becomes crystal clear that AR can't be a top 3 or to 5 QB in the NFL in the future.

That said, I'd never pass on a QB that might become a franchise QB if such a prospect is sitting there on the board when our pick comes up. I'd wait to see if a new HC or OC can get AR back on track first before I'd move up for a QB.

A few days ago, I researched the last several years to see if Aaron Rodgers has been a Top 5 QB over the last four years.

Not in QB rating, not in completion percentage, not in yards per attempt .

He is an above average QB who is exceptional at protecting the ball, but it’s been a while since he’s been Top 5. That’s already crystal clear.

Yes Clean House. We picked on Don Capers. And yes Pettine showed he could do more with less. But this defense never fooled the Lions. The bears and the Vikings, even lions, have a better defense. They run the 4-3-4. Bears No. It's time to switch back. Look what happened with the bears and Cowboys. Both drafted a ILB and made the playoffs. We don't have the answer in the middle. Or at Def. End. While Martinez does well. Does well is not good enough. Some say draft offense. But the bears and Cowboys did it with defense. After today defense must be drafted. And your safeties must be veterans that aren't confused by the 3-4-4. The time for change is now.

The Bears play a 3-4.

I, however, would not be against a move back to a 4-3 as long as it's a 4-3 under defense. I don't think playing a DE over the TE makes sense in this NFL.

“Under” isn’t a fundamentally different defensive scheme, it’s just an alignment shift, so it shouldn’t really be a concern. It’d be like saying I’m good with installing the west coast offense, as long as it’s not a west coast offense in trips formation.

They also tend to use different body types. Since the strong side OLB is in a better position the DE there can be a faster pass rushing type. He doesn't need to be about 300 lbs.

Most 4-3 Defenses have a mix of body types, from large, strong Reggie white 3-down DE's (300lbs) to guys like Aaron Kampman that were 3 down players but more a mix of size and quick (270 lbs) to pass rush specialists like KGB who were quick twitch speed demons (250-ish).

I was actually hoping to see the Packers run more 4-3 fronts this season, seeing as we've never really had true 3-4 body types on this team along the DL. I'm cool with whatever. Just get the most out of what we've got, or build to it.
