Empirical data regarding finding a top level franchise quarterback in the first round is quite a chore. Coming up with a Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers truly happens infrequently. Many of us can look at the Packers as the Gold Standard for top franchise quarterbacks for well over the last quarter of a century and we have yet another chance with Jordan Love of continuing that streak.

Teams fortunate enough to have a Mahomes, Rodgers, and perhaps we hope Love find in the first round instead end up disappointed with a Ryan Leaf instead of a Payton Manning, JaMarcuss Russell, Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Joey Harrington, Todd Blackledge, or a host of other first round drafted quarterbacks that failed to meet expectations.

Thus, while the Vikings staff and fans are excited to get their guy, JJ McCarthy in the top portion of the first round of this years draft, it certainly doesn't mean they have what they hope to have behind center for the next 10-15 years.

The Vikings are going to be very bad for the next five years unless JJ is a top 10 qb. They have very little draft capital and very little talent on defense.
