@12, The packers don't pick that high very often. It's a premium pick! Correct! @12. It's easier to get a franchise QB! Then spend more draft picks trying to do the impossible later. Lock makes sense!

But why spend a top a pick while 12 is under contract for a long time. I'd wait at least 2 years.

The unthinkable. Getting something for Kizer. It took Arron Rodgers a couple of years too. I'm just saying if your top defensive players are off the board. He could be the BPA that could fit.

Here is an observation: If anyone watched Risner vs Sweat — They would never want Sweat. If you watched Lindstrom tape after you watched Risner tape.....you wouldn’t want Risner. When you talk movement ability and ability to move quickly and to find someone to block with excellent technique....that isn’t close. Risner lets people into is body a lot, though you can never question his want-to. Risner goes hard.

Dillard is soooooo nice pass blocking, but run blocking? Finding someone to block at the second level? I would be scared of him because of that where people are saying he’ll go. At 30? He’s a deal there.

I don’t see all Badger football out here, but I will say I watched Deiters tape and I like him if they wait til later. It would surprise me if that guy was not a capable NFL starter early in his career.

Great podcast. There is most likely going to be a lot of value at OL from 30 to 44. I’d like to see us take one after addressing DL and S. I hope it breaks for us like we need it to.

Dillard compares to Bahk. Fast feet. The thing is Tackles make more then Guards. Dillard is a LT. It didn't work with Spriggs to RT. The money maybe a mind block. So why try and push a Lt to guard. Something to consider with J. Williams and others. My feeling is Lindstrom goes off the board before some Tackles. Keep hearing rumors of close to the first round. Are we really after a Tackle or Guard? If you switch Ots to guard, I think Lindstrom needs consideration more then Risner.

If the D fronts and o line are as good as advertised these GMs will grab them and not think twice about a rail-thin WR or developmental QB.

Rick,
Nice post!

Jannes...."thin rail!" Funny but get it! I would like some big bodies early in the draft if BPA!

I've seen and heard people commenting that the Packers must view Billy Turner as the future at RT because of his contract amount. The narrative is that the Packers wouldn't pay $8.0M/yr. for an OG. That ain't necessarily so for a number of reasons.

Sportrac rates Turner's salary at an average value over the life of the contract at $7.0 M/yr. That ranks his contract at 7th among RTs but only 18th among OGs.

If you want to look at it from a cap hit perspective, Turner's salary this year is $4.25M, which would be 18th among RTs and 30th among OGs.

The Packers can also get out of this contract in two years by taking a cap hit of $4.5M, and Turner will never see a year where his cap hit is $8.0M/yr.

Takeaways: There isn't any real difference between how the NFL values starting caliber RGs and OTs right now. Even if you think I'm wrong about that, Turner's contract numbers fit well within the range for a starting OG whether viewed on a cap hit or avg value over the life of the contract basis. Finally, Turner's contract will be fairly easy to dump if needed.

The bottom line is that Turner's contract is not as big as you think (especially if you account for anticipated increases in the cap when the labor deal is renegotiated), and the salary difference between an OG and a RT is not what you think, so the Packers can afford to play him at either OG or RT.

When do we take that OL?

I’m nervous if Bahk goes down. Face it Turner is just a journeyman. Madison’s high side evaluation was to be a back up or special teams guy. Spriggs scares the hell out of me. Bulaga will go down sometime during the season.

We need a high quality OT this year! But at what pick??
