Packers 2020 NFL Draft: Day 2 Analysis

Round 2 (62): AJ Dillon, RB, Boston College

Measurables/Combine

6'0" 247 lbs, 4.53 40 / 41.0 vert / 131" broad jump / 7.19 cone drill

Career Notes

Algiers Jameal "AJ" William Dillon is the grandson of College Football Hall of famer Thom Gatewood, who was the first African-American team captain at Notre Dame. Dillon played for a former B.C. offensive lineman (Paul Zukauskas) at Lawrence Academy in Connecticut, and he decided to sign on with the Eagles. He played only four games due to injury his senior year of high school but still racked up more than 600 yards and 12 touchdowns. Dillon jumped into the fray at Chestnut Hill as a true freshman, winning ACC Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-American honors by ranking seventh in the FBS with 1,589 yards (300 carries, 5.3 ypc) and scoring 14 touchdowns in 13 games (four starts). He started 10 games in 2018, earning first-team all-conference accolades (227 carries, 1,108 yards, 4.9 ypc, 10 touchdowns; eight receptions, 41 yards, 5.1 average) and cutting his fumbles from four to one. Dillon was the team's bellcow again as a junior, finishing among the national leaders in carries (318), yards (1,685), and 14 touchdowns in 12 starts (13 receptions, 195 yards, 15.0 average, one touchdown). The 2019 third-team Associated Press All-American and first-team All-ACC selection chose not to play in the team's bowl game to get ready for the draft.

Scouting reports

NFL.com Draft Profile

Built like a minibus but possessing enough vision and finesse to avoid being pigeon-holed as just a pure power back. Dillon is capable of handling heavy workloads and wearing down defenses, but there is a concern from evaluators that it's taken a physical toll on him. He's a disciplined runner who trusts his blocking scheme and follows his rush track. He's a good one-cut runner with below-average wiggle but natural power to create yards after contact. Dillon will find more space as he faces fewer loaded boxes as a pro, but dropping weight and adding quickness could be the difference between a future asa  committee back or a starter - Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

Racking up 4,382 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns across three seasons at Boston College, AJ Dillon has been among the most productive backs in college football in recent years. His blend of size, speed and power made him a difficult challenge as he ripped through ACC defenses. With that said, his next level projection isn’t that exciting. Dillon’s lack of technique pressing the line of scrimmage is concerning and he won’t be able to shred NFL defenses just because he is big and fast. Now if Dillon can develop more timing, processing and nuance then he has a chance to be a productive NFL runner that excels between the tackles and in pass protection. Unfortunately, Dillon also needs development as a receiver where his hands don’t appear natural and he wasn’t afforded many chances to catch the football in college. It’s unlikely he becomes a strong route runner that creates separation from linebackers. If Dillon’s NFL offense can get him the football in quick hitting runs where runways are created for him then he can find a role, but there are limitations in his game and what he does well isn’t of great value in today’s NFL. Finding a role on special teams, excelling in short yardage and developing his technique are critical. - Joe Marino, The Draft Network

Other options on the board

Most of the first, second and third tier wide receivers were off the board by this point, but Antonio Gibson was still on the board. Gibson is an absolute weapon and would have been able to give the Packers a versatile player who could do a lot of what Aaron Jones does. Gibson would have been perfect for jet sweeps and drags routes, and would have a chance to take it to the house every time he touches the ball.

Why they went with Dillon

Dillon is a powerful, one-cut runner that can do some damage between the tackles. Between Kyle Shanahan stockpiling running backs and Matt LaFleur running the Titans offense with Derrick Henry a couple years ago, LaFleur and Gutekunst clearly have a plan for him on offense.

He's also a natural replacement for Jamaal Williams, should they decide to let him walk after the 2020 season (which it now very much looks like they will do).

Dillon is a tough runner who should see a decent amount of work on the early downs. He has not shown an ability to be much of a factor in the passing game, but could have been more of a factor of not being asked to do it more than the lack of an ability on his part.

Time will tell on that aspect. If it does turn out that he can be a threat in the passing game, he could quickly become a huge weapon in this offense.

Round 2 (94): Josiah DeGuara (TE, Cincinnati)

Measureables/Combine

6'2" 242 lbs, 4.72 40 / 35.5 vert / 115" broad jump / 7.13 cone drill / 4.35 20 yard shuttle

Career Notes

DeGuara (pronounced DUH-gwah-ruh) was only a two-star recruit despite leading his Folsom, California, high school to an undefeated season and a Division I state title as a senior, racking up 114 receptions for 1,671 yards and 24 touchdowns. A three-sport athlete (also played baseball and basketball) in high school, Deguara redshirted his first year with the Bearcats and then played in all 12 games on special teams and as a reserve (four receptions, 47 yards, 11.8 average). He played in just seven games as a reserve the next season (11 receptions, 98 yards, 8.9 average) before breaking out in 2018. Deguara started all 13 games as a junior, catching 38 passes for 468 yards (12.3 average) and five scores. American Athletic Conference coaches voted Deguara first-team all-league for his play in 14 starts as a senior (39 receptions, 504 yards, 12.9 average, seven touchdowns).

NFL.com Draft Profile

What They're Saying

Hard-nosed move tight end who will garner consideration as an NFL H-back. He's a gritty blocker who plays with good positioning and works hard at sustaining blocks to help his run game. As a pass catcher, Deguara is sure-handed with good feel for soft spots against zone, but may need an accurate thrower due to contested catch likelihood and suspect catch radius. He's the type of Day 3 prospect who flies under the radar, but ends up becoming a solid contributor at H-back. - Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

Josiah Deguara projects as an ideal TE2 at the NFL level. There's some developmental upside to get more nuance out of Deguara's game, but he's currently a blue collar worker in the box who brings needed scrappy attitude and blocking success to the point of attack and just enough of a vertical threat in the pass game to be a constant thorn in the side of defenses. There's room for improvement, added nuance to some of Deguara's route running, which could lead to a starting role. – Kyle Crabbs: The Draft Network

Other Options on the Board

Malik Harrison is an ILB with intriguing athleticism and upside. After the two beatdowns by the 49ers last season, fans have been clamoring for a difference-maker at that position.

Why they went with DeGuara

Versatility and flexibility in the offense. When Danny Vitale was injured, they tried Jace Sternberger in the FB role and it did not go particularly well. DeGuara gives the Packers a tough, versatile option that should be a good blocker from the moment he first dons the Green and Gold, and is a big enough threat in the passing game to help them pull off their "illusion of complexity."

We'll likely see DeGuara doing most of his damage from in-line and FB alignment, then moving out to the slot as he develops. He's a guy that should see limited time in the offense right away, then be able to be a real difference-maker over the next couple of years. DeGuara will allow them to be "multiple" on offense in a way they've been somewhat limited with given their current tight ends.

Clearly trying to take the offense in a new direction, just frustrating that Gute is so disinterested in trying to find value in the draft. That's the opposite of TT, who would grab the value guys that fell due to injury concerns. Still, seems like they could have done multiple trade backs and still landed these guys, just like Gary last year.

I don't mind the players but they were all overdrafted. We should have waited at 30 for Love. Dillon would have been there at 94. A 6'2" TE with a RAS of 6 is almost undraftable.
Looking at what the Vikings have done makes me envious. They got Justin Jefferson and Ezra Cleveland while trading back several times. They have accumulated 13 picks on day 3. Of course they will trade some of these for future picks next year. Can we hire Rick Spielman ?

Chad Rueter on NFL.com gave Green Bay a "D" for their day 2 picks, by far the worst grade of all 32 teams.

As someone else said, Gutekunst seems to be in way over his head.

Crazy thing is this draft in particular was following the mocks much more closely than most years. Trades were low, top 15 had almost no surprises, round 2 had very few surprise guys falling down the board...

...so Gute shouldn't have been surprised by what was available. It's not like 8 WRs were off the board in the top 20, throwing everything off. Which means when they did their internal mocks, this is likely the group of guys they were selecting.

Not that I can see the logic, but it makes me feel better if this is the group they're really happy with. Even if it was a bad plan to execute.

I get the feeling that this draft has gone very much to plan and that plan is coherent: to install a LaFleur offense. We hired him to do so presumably, and now Gute is giving him the tools.

Laughing my ass off. Thompson gets the team to the championship game 4 times in 10 years and Packer fans take cheap shots at him. Gutekunst hires the most successful rookie coach ever and now we want him fired.

Some of you should root for the Lions, because you clearly can’t tell a good GM from a bad one.

"Can we hire Rick Spielman?"

You'd like the Packers to have Rick Spielman as their GM? The dude who last season had to start restricting contract of players HE JUST EXTENDED to sign his rookie class. The GM who had to cut several players this year who were still contributing due his INABILITY to manage his cap properly.

I've supported Gute through his entire tender so far and will continue to do so. I know this draft is next to impossible to get behind and trust me I have my issues with Gute this entire offseason. BUT to want to hire Rick Spielman is just WRONG! The Packers would be a Salary Cap hell in a year with Spielman.

There’s an intelligence aspect to the draft, knowing what other teams are planning to do and not being fooled by false flags. Some teams just seem to have more information.

For sure, I think people describe it like 'first order vs second order thinking'. First order - I can find 3 guys that can help the team. Second order - I know two of them are so undervalued by my peers that I can trade back and get 4 guys that can help the team.

Value depends on what aspects one is appraising it on. It looks like in terms of what LaFleur wants, these players were viewed as excess value at the pick at which they were taken.

We just entered the LaFleur era, that much is clear. This is starting to look a lot more Shannahan than McCarthy. Love to me signals that it’s that way or bust now.

I’m coming to the belief that the powers that be have become convinced that the Rodgers era is closing faster than they thought before last season. Going to be interesting.

Benched? No... Is Rodger fully w/ the LaFLeur program? Well remember the stink he made about changing plays last year?

It clear that LaFleur and Gutey are remaking the roster for LaFleur benefit, not Rodgers. Its up to Rodgers to get fully on board and help this team win another SB before his career ends. Elway was able to put his ego aside and got 2 SB trophy's for it. Remains to be seen if Rodgers will do the same.

So far no impact players no help for this season, defense is full of holes , this clearly is a team headed down not up , I guess it’s all about the future , blame Rodgers but don’t surround him with talent , I hope he can be traded he deserves a chance at another ring because obviously it’s not gonna happen in Green Bay in the near future. We are all trying to survive through a difficult time, we anticipated the draft for something to distract us and then Gute pulls this crap on us.

Im guessing they wanted Mims and Asiasi.

That said, what clearly left an impression was the way the Titans and Niners absolutely obliterated teams late in games on the ground. This is just the NFL as copycat league, and we’re the copycats.

If Rodgers is just average, best to beef up the run game. I’m guessing the next picks are good run-blocking offensive linemen, which are easier to find in the late rounds. A strong run-game also keeps your defense off the field.

It's OK to be a copycat if you can execute. If you're going to do it, do it better.

The league is shifting back in this direction to compensate for smaller faster LBs and DL who are passing game specialists. If the mindset of coordinators and GMs shifts to compensate for this, then you're too late to the party.

You can only throw resources at a position group(s) for so long before you have to step back and rely on your investments and improvement from within. Clearly, that's in the message we're getting from BG on this draft with the defense.

I agree that it’s one of the messages, but I also get the message that the offensive philosophy of last year is seen as being more deleterious to our future prospects than the defensive weaknesses or the absence of a standout new skill player high in the draft.

I think they could've traded back a few spots and had a crack at Dillon, but I don't think he lasts into the 90s.

It's the Deguara pick that frustrates me. If you love him, great. Move up and take him on day 3...but by most accounts, he's unlikely to have been gone before the end of round 4.

The frustration here is that we're seeing a bit of a pattern: BG locks in on his guys...Gary, Burks, and now Dillon and Deguara. He's impatient and myopic. I can't believe there weren't other players that provide what they were looking for without locking in on these two guys.

Agreed, nothing against the player but I really believe he still would have been there in the 5th or 6th. We could helped other position with the 3rd and still had there guy later.

Wondering about the impatience also, he could have probably gotten Love at 30 if he just waited.

It's the same thing Ted used to do. Remember Khyri Thornton and Richard Rodgers. Both players that were way overdrafted.

Dillion was a guy their scout Owen had been tracking since his freshman year in college. He's the one who pushed the pick. But his enthusiasm may have warped Gutey's perspective on how to play the draft. Same thing with Gary, who they bragged they had been following since high school, ignoring his lack of production at Michigan.

It's one thing to target certain players, but the great GMs know what round to pick these guys. And if their gamble fails, they have a nearly equal prospect in mind.

It's not so much I mind the 2nd and 3rd round players Gute took, but where he took them. He has to judge better their relative value to his peers.

I am shocked with yesterday’s picks...and slowly realizing that Matt Lafluer wants his offense to take #1 priority over defense and look like San Frans offense and not look like LA Rams offense. Lafluer must have been using half his playbook last yr using mike mccarthy players. Pete Dougherty wrote a great article today about the play action run game and play pass game that Lafluer wants sooo much more of in his offense. Gute will have to go get players for defense off the street

Dougherty has always been "glass half full" with the Packers. It's a piece that provides a view of what's going on. Tom Silverstein is the "glass half empty" share of that columnist group. I'll be curious to see what he has to say.

As for the defense, we'll see what he can do with minimal cap resources. He can cut Lane Taylor to make room for a value FA or maybe two if they're close to the vet minimum...but I wouldn't expect the cavalry after the draft.

I have no problem with the players drafted. Drafting Love as heir apparent is fine. Dillon gives us a power back great! I don’t know much about Deguarra (sp?). I am sure Gute did his homework.

Here is the problem. The primary problems the Packers had in big games last year was overall team speed and the inability to stop the run. Yet, we didn’t touch either in free agency. Essentially we let Martinez go and signed street FA Kirksey. Ok fine. Made sense as we didn’t have the budget in a capped league to spend. Wait until the draft they said.

Well after the top of the draft has come and gone we have not addressed team speed or stopping the run. It is hard for me to rely on 5th round and up talent to satisfy these needs. If I remember correctly SF whipped us and only attempted 8 passes in the NFC Championship Game. 8! That’s basically saying “here it is, stop it”. All day long. Please tell me where and when this will be addressed?

Some overall draft observations. Kiper needs to drink less coffee, he's bobbing and twitching all over the place. Also, Goodell is mumbling and fumbling and has to sit down after rdg for 20 seconds every 15 minutes. Not bad for 20 mill. Now we know the Pats secret, Belichick's dog. Every time they went to MM's chair it was empty, they should have had another camera in the kitchen. Finally, Jones all by himself on a 250 mill cruiser out in the middle of the ocean in quarantine , I guess he never read Poe's "Masque of the Red Death".

Same reason why he cuts up all the NFL gear he's forced to wear, rather than the suit he'd prefer (like his idol Lombardi). The guy is old school, so what? I'd take him over any coach in NFL history

He's truly unique. It's why McDaniels, Patricia, and all these others can't replicate him. They just aren't him.

He'll be tested in 2020...if there are any games.

He's a great coach and the dog was funny. However, what's the big deal about sitting there for a few hrs knowing well that most of the country is in a tough situation. The old school men I knew and know didn't cheat and are cordial. Lombardi was tough enough to be cordial, classy enough to wear a jacket and be respectful, and smart enough to have a sense of humor.

Really puts pressure on Kirksey to stay healthy and be productive, or this defense is screwed. There are probably still serviceable DL run-stuffers on the street and maybe in the bottom of the draft, but the middle of this defense is probably worse not better, than it was three months ago. And I was not a Martinez fan.

I can see where they are going with the offense, I just think they reached. Always hard to know.

The team has improved...
1) Transitioning to LaFleur's scheme - which is better than McCarthy's outdated scheme. Offensive philosophy upgraded.
2) Love is better than Boyle. QB group upgraded.
3) Dillon is better than Williams. RB group upgraded.
4) Deguara is better than Vitale and Graham and Tonyan combined. TE group upgraded.
5) Path was cleared for Sternberger to become a starter. TE group upgraded.
6) Funchess is better than MVS, ESB, Allison, Kumerow, etc. WR group upgraded.
7) Kirksey is better than Martinez. ILB group upgraded.
8) THE TEAM IS FINALLY MOVING FROM FINESSE TO POWER!!!!!!!!! Entire philosophy upgraded.

Gutey avoided the stats of his team. I can handle a Lacy , a Brockington, an old style RB. But this guys upside is the IR. Like so many other backs. The NFL is about speed now. He'll work out. But for how long. The Te is just so ridicules its Not even a fit. What you hope for and what you drafted is the case here. With Lewis soon to be shown the door. The Tes in this draft just were not even close to a 3rd Talent /pick. TT would have taken a WR before TE any Day this draft. And thats the failure of Gutey in this draft. Putting the square peg in the round hole, has been the failure of GBs drafts for the last 10 years. Reached way to far on all 3 picks. Costing this team more Time to get it right.

It certainly feels as if the Packers' conclusion after their self-scout was that their personnel groups were holding the offense back...as much as we wanted to say it was transitioning schemes. They're aiming to get better through efficiency. This draft has the feel of a GM who feels he's finishing a roster that lacks major holes. BG's relying strongly on the 2019 lockerroom (minus Martinez and Bulaga)...which means he's putting a lot in the laps of Keke, Adams (no, the other one), Jackson/Ento/Hollman/Sullivan, and--yes, Lphill--Oren Burks.

Looks to me like a GM who is giving LaFleur the tools to run his kind of offense. It also seems like the Packers decided that the window for a pass first offense to succeed based on Rodgers is closing or closed.

Sounds like some serious rethinking has gone on. Murphy brought in LaFleur to change things up. Looks like the team decided the time is now not later. They have to see the struggles of last year as falling more on Rodgers’ shoulders than we did. Seem to see reshaping the offense as being a more significant positive than focusing on defensive weaknesses. That suggests they really didn’t like what they saw from the O as it was constituted last year.

Maybe Rodgers will take a little more time and get the receivers up to speed the way he wants it instead of throwing them on the garbage heap. We carried more WR's last year than ever and only saw flashes of one carrying the torch for a few weeks at a time. The OL that were picked up had a lot of reps at the bench. Hopefully strong run game OL members and C replacement. That will free up 12 mill or so and more if Turner loses his position. We can only pray someone on DL spent the off-season working their butt off after such an embarrassing
final game and is on fire for this season to start.

Yeah, the last part of that is scary....It's still weird to see this kind of retooling for a team that won 14 games last year--apparently we won't be building off of that..."This draft has the fee lof a GM finishing a roster that lacks major holes." In other words, he has the priorities backward.

While at first glance this picks don´t look good I think they might be IMO. I mean, we know Packers need help in offense (specially in WR) but probably the WR available when we picked weren´t worth the draft position. A RB is going to contribute right away, and next year is gonna be a huge need (I can´t imagine paying both Jones and Williams). The TE pick is going to take a bit longer to get on the field, but finally we got two relatively high pick TE in the roster for the next few years. And opening the run will help the pass offense and the defense.

So far what I’m seeing in this draft are serious moves to take the ball out of Rodgers hands. First we draft Rodgers replacement who will be a clipboard warrior for 2 seasons when viable WRs were on the board. Then we draft an RB who may be a good player but we selected him at least one round too soon. If we wanted to help Rodgers with the ground game a Gale Sayers type of RB would have been a good choice but we took Dillion, again while there still were viable WRs on the board.

Then we take a TE of dubious quality who appears to be a good blocking TE. Again not much help to Rodgers. So far this draft looks like an FU to Rodgers, especially since the current right side of our OL is ineffective at run blocking and without Bulaga ineffective at pass blocking as well.

I’m thinking we go full house backfield with 2TEs,maybe even 3 and runs Jones to the left side with 4 or 5 blockers on every play until it’s stopped. Then we run a counter play with Dillon or Williams just to confuse the defense now and then. Finally in the 3rd or 4th quarter after we have beaten the CBs and DBs into the turf we actually throw a pass to Adams who is the only receiver we have. The Packers will wear their throwback uniforms for the entire season since we will be running a throwback offense. Rodgers will realize that he can take his money, hand the ball off without being injured until the Packers either cut or trade him and with a well rested arm and body for 2-3 seasons he can still win another SB or 2 with another team. At which point the Packers will be starting over with a new GM and HC.

It’s a nice day here today so I’m going outside to enjoy the day rather than wasting my time watching any more of this madness. Stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

As '61 noted, this is the draft that in effect neuters Rodgers and hands over the reigns to LaFleur.

During the offseason the Pack decided to hitch their wagon to the MLF express. One of the more interesting story lines going forward is how will ARod respond.

Agree Mojo, it will be interesting to see how Rodgers responds. He is a pro and he will take the money as long as he can.

If he gets injured he days in GB will be numbered since Gute and MLF will get their guy in there to stay. New regimes want their guys no matter what business they are in, sports, politics, business, entertainment, etc. Rodgers is the face of TT and MMs team not the face of MF and Gute’s team.

The problem with the approach they are moving to is that the Packers don’t have the OL to pull it off like the Titans, or Dallas in the early 90s or the Lombardi Packers. The right of the OL is in flux and Linsley can be pushed around. Our defense has trouble stopping the run because for some reason our DC doesn’t think to put 5 DLs in the LOS and force a QB like SFs to beat us which he couldn’t.

It will be interesting to see if Rodgers checks out of passing plays to hand off to Dillon. Rodgers is smart enough to realize that using therun game keeps him playing rather than risking injury by passing. This could be hysterical.

Nobody predicted the Packers to go 13-3 last year. If the Packers run the ball more, AR stays healthy and things open up downfield. Will they go 13-3 again? Who knows, that's why they play the game.

And the niners get better again in the present not like they aren’t the best to begin with. Adding a great tackle to an already potent run game. I hope the packers have a plan on how to stop the run. Or I would hate to play them again so they run for 300 yards.

Don't know if NFL is a copycat league or not, but it seems like more running backs taken early, especially in rd. 2 than in most drafts recently. If we're a cat we might not be the only one.

The Vikings have 13 more picks to make in the next 4 rounds, The Packers should offer next years 3rd round pick for 1 each in the 4th,5th, & 6th rounds. No way they would not take that deal to add a premium pick next year and not have to waste them all this year. Maybe we could salvage this draft yet. This has been a disaster. Kids could draft better than this.

So this draft has been used to replace/supplement our offensive backfield.

That is a stunning statement.

Hard to believe 12 will hang around much longer just to hand the ball off.

Who needs to use a premium pick on a WR when the plan is to run 1 and 2 WR sets?

And Gutey paid top dollar for his picks so this wasn't just a matter of how his board fell.

1 - he could have traded down in R1 but he chose instead to trade UP for a QB i.e., he paid top dollar for Love to keep the Colts from taking him. So he wanted him and he wanted him bad.

2 - he could have easily traded down again at end of R2 but instead he chose to "reach" for a RB. I say reach because I read 1,000 mock drafts and not one of them had Dillon even smelling R2.

3 - he could have easily traded down again in R3 as he drafted an H back that I hadn't even heard of.

So Gute/MLF have the backfield they apparently want.

Now fans can watch the win total drop from 13 to about half that.

We may have replaced the old with the new in this draft but we have not made us ourselves better unless Dillon is the 2nd coming of Derrick Henry which I truly doubt.

Up till now I was giving Gutey the benefit of the doubt for his questionable draft picks on the defensive side of the ball (Josh Jackson, R Gary and Oren Burks) but no longer. This was a horrible utilization of 3 premium draft picks in a great draft year.

And I thought house arrest was bad.

Archie - I agree. To move to this alleged power, heavy offense we need a better OL especially on the right side. We should have taken a WR to stretch the defense and pose a threat and then 2 OLs to solidify the right side of the OL and on day 3 we could take our RB and TE to play with our rebuilt OL.

Instead we have a clipboard warrior, a part time FB and a 2nd maybe even 3rd string level TE, at least for the 2020 season, WTF!!!

However if you look at 2021 and all these guys have a full season to learn the NFL. Then we see Gute and MLF move Rodgers out via injury either real or extended for caution and Love “take over.” By then Gute has another year of drafting his guys and off we go Back to the 80s while Rodgers is moved out. I hope I’m wrong but this draft has really shifted my view of what Gute is trying to do with this team. Stay well. Thanks, Since ‘61

My day 3 targets (no order implied). I'm leaving out guys who I think won't make it into round 5 (which is why you won't see Leki Fotu here):
Joe Reed, WR, Virginia. Developing WR/RB type. RAS monster.
Cameron Clark T/G, Charlotte. College LT who could play a long time at G.
Ben Bredesen, G, Michigan. Gritty G prospect. Plays with some nasty.
Broderick Washington, DT, TTU. Quick, powerful DE candidate. Looks a lot like Mike Daniels
Benito Jones, DT, Ole Miss. I don't think he lasts very far into round 5, but could play right away. Not the best fit for what Pettine does.
Rashard Lawrence, DT, LSU. Quick strong interior defender.
Bryce Huff, OLB, Athletic developmental OLB
Carter Coughlin, OLB, Min. Athletic freak, gritty on-field leader. Inside-outside candidate. Kyler Fackrell replacement.
Cam Brown, LB, Penn St., Inside-outside LB candidate.
Evan Weaver, ILB, Cal. Gritty team leader and tackler. ST maven. Rd 7.
Amik Robertson, CB, LaTech. Physical, aggerssive slot corner. Smallish. Good run defender
Antoine Brooks, S, Maryland. Tough, physical hybrid defender
