Packers 33 Vikings 10: Game Balls & Lame Calls

Pack puts on its own New Year's Eve party in Minneapolis.

As I write this article the calendar is literally rolling over into a brand new year. Which seems fitting because the Green Bay Packers’ victory over the Minnesota Vikings on New Year’s Eve feels like the official beginning of a brand new era. It feels like it can safely be said that the Pack is back. They may not make the playoffs, but there is now reason to think the rebuilding process is headed in the right direction.

I am struck at how history repeats itself. Once again the Packers will end the regular season at home against a division rival needing only to win to make the playoffs. Matt LaFleur is getting yet another chance to show he can get this team ready to play a do or die game. It won’t be easy. The Bears are also coming together and playing their best football. Justin Fields will present a much bigger challenge than the likes of Jaren Hall or Nick Mullens.

But Green Bay’s dominance over the Vikes demonstrates what this team is capable of when the defense actually shows up to complement the offense. The game wasn’t even as close as the 33-10 final score. The Packers missed even more opportunities to score and to stop what little progress the Vikings could muster. Of course, it’s true that Minnesota was severely handicapped by the lack of a competent quarterback, but give the defense credit. This time they didn’t make the likes of Hall and Mullens look like the second coming of Dan Marino. This time they made them look like the scrubs they are. The defense did its job. And with the offense improving every week, who knows what could happen?

Thankfully, the game ended while the Packers still had enough healthy players to take the field. They will be a battered and bruised bunch when they line up against Chicago. But you get the sense this team doesn’t care whose out there. They are young and hungry. Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams and all the other vestiges of the old regime are gone. These guys want to write their own story. Who better to appear in the final chapter but the hated Bears.

GAME BALLS

Jordan Love

This was his most complete game. His stats tell only part of the story, although they are very impressive. 24 of 33 for 256 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, and a QB rating of 133. But what was most impressive was his maturity and moxie. The way he comfortably moved about the pocket, the way he read the defense and made the right decisions. Once the Packers got a couple scores ahead he had the awareness to let the play clock run down on nearly every snap to shorten the game. Oh, there were still a few bad throws, mostly due to his proclivity to release the ball with both feet off the ground. But he owned that Viking defense, and that’s a pretty good unit.

Aaron Jones

His ability to cut and explode through the hole is elite. He averaged six yards per carry on the way to racking up 120 total rushing yards. His home run threat sets up the play action and makes the passing game that much more dangerous. He actually runs harder and with more power than AJ Dillon. In the third quarter, when Green Bay was trying to extend a clock-killing drive, they faced an important third and one on the Vikings’ 20 yard line, LaFleur called on Jones to run the dive up the gut, not Dillon. Jones churned out two tough yards. First down. I don’t think Dillon gets those yards. Jones was seen on the bench with an ice pack on his knee. Rest up 33. You are essential for Week 18.

Jayden Reed

He has become the star of this young receiving crop. His run after the catch on his 28 yard touchdown was breathtaking.  He escaped a defender who had hold of his jersey and broke for the boundary, showing uncommon acceleration, and then the toughness to drag tacklers with him over the goal line.  He finished with six catches for 89 yards and two scores, and in the process broke the franchise record for receptions by a rookie.  The only concern surrounds his being small and thus susceptible to injury.  He left the game again never to return in the second half after getting hurt.  Hopefully it's not serious.

Bo Melton

This cat wants to play. He is forcing his way into the game plan even when Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks return. The Packers lost zero momentum when Jayden Reed left the game hurt in the second half. Love just started throwing the rock to Melton, who always seems to be open. Six catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. A couple of those were clutch third down conversions. LaFleur finds himself with a pleasant problem: Finding snaps for a surprisingly large group of good receivers.

The Offensive Line

TV analyst Cris Collinsworth pointed out several times that this offensive line seems to be melding together. Most impressive was the way they continued to blow holes through the Vikings front, even when everybody in the stadium knew Green Bay was going to run. They kept the passing pocket clean all night. Love was not really close to being sacked. They paved the way for 470 yards of offense, 177 of which was on the ground. By far their best performance of the season.

Many honorable mentions on defense. To the front seven for a relentless pass rush resulting in four sacks, and the secondary, especially corners Corey Ballentine and Carrington Valentine, who kept the Vikings dangerous receivers from making big plays throughout.

LAME CALLS

Special Teams Mistakes

Anders Carlson missed another extra point. That makes five this season, by far the most in the NFL. It’s easy to dismiss this failure in the wake of a big win, but this cannot continue. It’s going to cost them a game one day. Then there was the muffed punt by Samori Toure. It was the kind of error that could let an opponent back into a game. The Vikings immediately converted the turnover into a touchdown, their only touchdown. Fortunately, Green Bay’s offense seized the momentum back again on the next drive.

Stupid Penalties

Keisean Nixon’s late hit on a sliding Nick Mullens was unnecessary and silly. He needs better self discipline in those situations. A second quarter holding penalty on Josh Myers, pinning the Packers back on their own seven yard line. An encroachment call on Kenny Clark. All could have been back breakers against a tougher opponent. This needs to be cleaned up.

THREE AND OUT

-- I don’t know about you, but I would just as soon not see the kind of head-over-heels hit taken by Jordan Love on his two yard touchdown keeper. I admire his desire, and it was a critical score, but let somebody else take that kind of punishment. Love is now the franchise, and he needs to look after his safety.

-- The 91 yard drive in the third quarter was the longest of the season for the Packers. They ran off 13 plays and bled eight minutes off the clock. The drive culminated with a ten yard touchdown strike to Melton. That made the score 30-3 and put the game away. It was a thing of beauty.

-- Don’t you wonder what was going through the mind of Jaire Alexander as he watched this game? The cornerback was suspended for bad conduct. He watched those young secondary guys play the game of their lives. Wonder if he thinks he is becoming expendable to this team?  Will be interesting to see if he starts next week.

I wish all Packer fans Happy New Year as well, they played very well last night, I have been very critical of the of the oline play this season for whatever reason they certainly proved last night they can play. Defensively we faced a bad pair of QB's still not and never will be a fan of Joe Barry he bought himself another 2 weeks maybe. Fields will test them nextweek. J Love has turned the corner he has himself a set of receivers that are making plays, who could have thought Tucker Kraft was this good? Tom Brady had Gronk and Love has Kraft. Musgrave will be the icing on the cake next year. Doubs, Reed, Melton? Health, Wicks, and the softie Watson he better watch out might end up as wr6. Youngsters are letting it all hang out, ST needs some work no question Rashan Gary play last night? Not sure I heard his name, JA and Savage Stokes all need to find new homes next season no place for guys that don't want to buy into team play. Aaron Jones was a a gift from you know where guy as they say is a baller. Always better when the Packers win, coffee tastes that much better little more pep in the step. Keep it going guys

When everyone on the D- lines is doing work, with the exception of Gary, it might just be that they've come up with a game plan to not let Rashan wreck the game..? Gary is a stud and he demands attention!

"Defensively we faced a bad pair of QB's still not and never will be a fan of Joe Barry he bought himself another 2 weeks maybe."

Facing bad QBs the last few weeks didn't stop this defense from making them Offensive Player of the Week performers. Just glad they didn't do that last night! Have to admit that when MN called that QB run right off the bat for 10 yards, I had my doubts.

"Rashan Gary play last night? Not sure I heard his name,"

Teams roll protection to his side. This is why Preston Smith is quietly having one of his best seasons--when he's not covering WR, that is. Gary was pushing the pocket all night.

Don't root for Gutey to keep giving away our best DBs. Very glad Ballantine was able to cover Justin Jefferson that well but cutting Ja only saves $3MM and still carries a $24MM dead cap hit. Would not be a good move. He's under contract until 2027. Hopefully he returns to form.

Winning helps everything!

Interesting that Rasul Douglas had two interceptions yesterday, including a pick six.
I don't know if Gute knew something about Valentine/Ballentine, or if he's getting lucky that they're performing well.

What Gutekunst knew was that he couldn't afford Douglas next year, and that Buffalo was willing to pay for him mid season. He nets a 3rd round pick, cap relief and got something for having picked Douglas up at a thrift store. Let's celebrate his excellent work.

Also too, Ballentine had an int yesterday and is earning the league minimum. Winning!

I personally think that once Joe Barry goes, Jaire Alexander's attitude returns.

Sure, one would prefer that their CB1 had more maturity than he's displayed - especially on his wage - but the silver lining is that he clearly isn't indispensable to the team........ it's only his cap number that poses present day challenges (although with these shenanigans, I'll be surprised if he ever sees another large, guaranteed money contract again from any team).

Which brings us to Douglas - sure, if this was the MLB he'd still be on the team, but the option to claw back ~$9M cap and add a third round pick next year is too compelling.

By the looks of it, the Packers are going to have a similar circumstance in 1-2 years' time with the WR room...... more capable players than cap space.

It would kill their cap to trade Alexander. He’s not going anywhere. They need better coaching to return him to all pro.

Great column and I don't have much to add. A perfect way to end the year.

It was a tough year for my family and look forward to this year-2024.

There was one thing I wished for past year and that was for us to find out if Love would be our qb of the future. I think we have found that out even before last night's victory. I am in full support of Jordan Love moving forward.

Our packers have a bright future ahead of them which is just great news for us fans. I just totally enjoyed last nights whipping. So entertaining to watch!

It really was. Been a while since I’ve experienced that pleasurable “This is comfortably boring” feeling during a Packers victory.

I’ve been in Love’s corner from the beginning. I felt it made sense to draft Rodgers’ potential replacement when they did and let him develop. I had no idea whether he was the guy, but I admired how he handled the controversy he didn’t ask to be thrown into as a consummate professional, putting his head down and getting to work learning, never giving his online doubters fodder. And now that he is proving that he IS the guy the Packers brass hoped he could be, I am finding that I really like him. He’s fun to watch, he’s articulate and confident without arrogance, and maybe even just a bit… refreshingly normal.

I think 2024 is going to be a really great year. Cheers, Packers fans. The (hopefully Barry-less) future looks bright.

I would never say I was a big-time Love believer, but I was a believer that it was time to move the team on and he was the first guy in line to get a shot. The fact that he seems to be turning into a quality NFL QB, and that the Packers didn't have to go back to the well multiple times to find that guy is huge.

Now they need to keep the arrow pointing up. Can't have him "burn bright" and then fade away.

Brad and dobber,
I was uncertain and unimpressed earlier in the season, but Love has won me over throughout the season. His 'never too high and never too low' demeanor is impressive for a young QB, and I think it helps to stabilize the young receiver group. They just move on to the next play!
Offensively I'm hoping for two things during the off-season: 1.) that Love can work on his 'easy throws 'accuracy, and 2:) that the Packers can find a way to keep Aaron Jones, he's sooo important to this team as a leader!
The inevitable O-Line up-grade goes without saying.

Happy New Year!

I think it's amazing that JL hasn't been seriously injured. O line was pretty leaky way too much this season! I'm sure he's battered and bruised, but it seems like nothing that won't heal readily.

Hopefully he has a great career! No telling what his ceiling might be ...

Great post Brad.

I was in Love's corner at the beginning as well. The reason? Gute selected him and even moved up so I knew he saw something in Love. Originally, I had hoped that they would have waited a year before drafting the replacement qb but understood that Gute wanted this guy so he must be 'the man'. And if they waited a year, that opportunity may not be there.

So glad Gute had the knowledge to select him.

Happy New Year!
Nice article Ken, and I gotta' admit the Packers surprised me a bit last night. They definitely came to play, maybe the Alexander thing had a positive effect. Poor Jaire, standing at the door with his nose pressed against the glass, and nobody will unlock the door! Hmmm........
The "D" played well, but don't be fooled. The guy NBC kept showing in the booth was a Barry imposter trying to save Barry's job, Barry doesn't call timely and well-planned blitzes. The real Barry will re-surface way too soon, leave him outside with Jaire!
Love played extremely well, it seems that when he tries to 'float one' he can be inaccurate at times, but when he just reaches back and fires he's dead-on the nuts. He looked very comfortable all night long.
Jones was, well, Jones, and that was great to see, I was looking for him in the passing game a bit more.
The young receivers group seem to be the classic example of 'next man up' and that's a great 'problem' to have, the Vikings are likely already waiting for next fall's Packer cuts. The TE's looked good. With that said, what the hell was Toure doing on a punt return with Nixon on the sidelines, WTF? The ST's were not special.
Nice to get the win, but here comes Da Bears, NOT with a 4th string QB, and with a better defense than the Vikes showed last night.
Let's hope this carries over.

It's all a question of which Packers team shows up. I like this one better! One more time, with feeling! Unfortunately that feeling includes a lot more of our players hurt. I'd like to see more players come off the bench.

Toure was tried as a punt returner to reduce injury risk to Nixon with Reed out. With that lead it was ok. I think Grant DuBose should be ahead of Toure. I'd also like to see #31 given enough snaps to actually get in the game, instead of just try him stone cold. 3 OTs need to be evaluated before Gutey can possibly draft intelligently; Mt Caleb, Telfort and Tenuta. Huge guys that I'd be very surprised if any rookie can do better.

Happy New Year fellow Packer fans and CHTV contributors and staff.

Agree on the Game Balls. Jordan Love had his best game yet and Aaron Jones proved, once again, how important he is to the Packers offense. Reed and Melton led the way for the receiving corps. The OL played their best game of the season and made the offense go all game. The defense played aggressively for a full 60 minutes for the first time this season. Granted the Vikings are a mess at QB but the defense won the LOS and the Vikings had no answers..

Lame Call: Fumbled punt by Toure. The STs with Bisaccia as their coach should be past these mistakes by now.

Gret win for the Packers. Bring on Da' Bears. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Happy New Year everyone!

Going into this game I was not very confident of a win. The Packers proved me wrong in very convincing fashion. This was the most complete game thus team has played. I was shocked Barry actually called an aggressive game and blitzed the Viking QBs regularly. Where was that all season?

My game ball would go to Gutekunst - he hit on the next great Packer QB and had one hell of a 2023 draft. Between Love and the kiddie corps, the Packer future is bright.

I just want to note the two second half 8-minute drives. Bend and not break defenses depend on offenses making mistakes or being effective somewhere in the drive. Two long drives shows many good things about the offense, including the play of the offensive line, as mentioned, and the play calling.

I'd be interested in knowing the number of downfield pass plays where the receiver was wide open. At times I thought the vertical routes were catching the safeties in a shift as the Vikings tried to disguise coverage. But above all, the medium crossing routes continue to be productive.

Last night's game was about as fine of a way to roll into the New Year as any Packers fan could ask for.

Absolutely own and beat down the Vikings at home? - Check
Drink in the looks of resignation and defeat on the faces of Vikings players and fans like Mother's milk? - Check
See the future of your franchise come into sharper focus? - Check
Keep a shot at the playoffs alive? - Check

This team is reminding me more and more of the 2010 Packers. One game to make the tournament. Next man up.

Happy New Year, fellow Cheeseheads.

I don't know about Alexander, but for me we looked worse with Stokes on the field. Before he came back we found our groove. We managed to win without him and Alexander. Than he came back for two games which we lost - not because of him, but it looked like we lost our balance in secondary. From what I recall he was burnt for score 3 times during Giants and Buccs games. Alexander is a big caliber player. If he is motivated he is plug-and-play, but you never know with him. It reminds me the situation we had with depleted O-line some time ago. When it finally started to work, coaches decided to shuffle it again before deciding game to make it look better "on paper". Don't fix what is working. Let players win their spot back. Ballantine limited Jefferson so he can try with DJ Moore.

Alexander's brand has been tarnished. He's got his big contract and someone will always bid on him, but they'll be more wary and he's got some damage control to do.

"Ballantine limited Jefferson so he can try with DJ Moore."

Very different kinds of WR. Moore is more physical. He's a catch and run guy. He's going to test the Packers' DB in their tackling.

Matt,

when Stokes and Ja were looking like they might come back from injury, we were talking about who should play. Absolutely nobody said the best idea would be to throw them in the fire right away like what was done. GUGE coaching mistake!

Personally, I would have liked to see them play, but not so much all at once. It's been WAY too long especially for Stokes. Should've been benched when he had no idea what was going on, even if only to put him back in once he got his bearings again. Valentine and Valentine had carried the G, and earned at least some playing time.

I never expected Ballentine to be able to cover Justin Jefferson so well! Ja and Stokes are not chopped liver though. Stokes was the fastest man on the team, hopefully he returns to form ...

Kevin O'Connell kind of gifted this game to the packers. Starting that kid was a cruel trick to Minnesota fans. Good on Barry for putting the heat on him and exposing him early and often.

AND...as much as I'm not a fan of Matt LaFleur, that offensive game plan was masterful. Love was prepared, and the routes called for the blitzes and blitz packages were spot on. Not one moment of "deer in the headlights" with pressure bearing down on Love, just absolute zen-like calm. If not for Lamar being perfect, Love would be offensive player of the week.

We also got to see Clifford, who many on this board wanted to replace Love. Not sure I agree with their police work there.

I wasn't impressed with Stokes' sophomore season before he got hurt. Now that he was back for a minute there's a lot to fix in his game and I'm not sure it will be. I expect the Pack to draft one and maybe 2 CB in this years draft so he better get his game fixed or he might be gone.

Happy New Year one and all! And the future looks so bright, I'll have to wear shades. I also think there should be a special mention of Tucker Kraft, especially the ball he caught near the sidelines, and the beautiful, bone crunching "stiff arm" he gave a Vikings defender. And thank goodness, the guy has apparently decided that trying to leap over people is not a good idea, and instead lowers his shoulder and bulls for another few yards. So much development in such a short time is a breath of fresh air.

Loved to see the terrific results from all of the young WRs as well as the rookie 2nd string TE.

I would toss a game ball to Jason Vrable - the WR coach and the passing game coordinator and also a game ball to John Dunn, TE coach who has Tucker Kraft playing quite well.

Really coming on strong as a group!

GO BO GO!

Game ball to: the coaching staff. Game plan was good on both sides of the ball. Stuck with the run, distributed the ball. Didn't get passive on D at the end, AND--after a week of crappy press, Jaire and Campbell speaking out--when everyone wondered whether this team was finally breaking down and whether they would phone it in, the players rallied and delivered a complete and aggressive game.

In a sad way, it says something when you give a game ball to the coaching staff...

I will agree in that I hate that push play...but the overhead camera on the replay clearly showed the first down and that the spot was gosh awful. It seemed to be a prime spot for a LaFluer challenge.

But, yeah, never a fan of not only asking the most important player on my offense to dive head-first into a pile of 300 pounders, but also driving him forward in the process.

There's where a double reverse should have been run. (/sarcasm)

Last week was a perfect execution of a keeper. The tush push is more manageable when you have a QB who does a lot of running in the first place and when your interior OL gets consistent push, which isn't a description I would apply to the current team.

I think you have to give a game ball to Kraft.
His blocking is so much better than his college tape.
And he really got some things started.

In fact: Kraft should be the #1 TE now.

There's really no need to declare a #1 TE. They are who we thought they were. Musgrave is a big bodied WR. Kraft is better with contact and has potential to be a YAC machine, exactly what you want in a TE. There's plenty of room for both roles on this team.

I'd love to see #88, 85, 33, 28, and a 100% # 9 when he's HOT all on the field at the same time! They can all rush and pass, with Musgrave perhaps the worst rusher. They can all block, with #9 probably the worst at that.

Who's stopping them?

Plus you can change it up by going to two WRs and 1 RB, or 2 WRs and 1 TE. #28 & 33 are each more effective when they're on the field together; it stresses an opposing defense to try to figure out what's coming.

#85 is a true TE, 11 should be WR1 when he's healthy.

He was top value when Aiyuk was poached by Lynch. The issue was taking Dillon with the two pick. A trade up for a WR would have loaded the position to keep the triple teams off Davante. The rest of the scrubs in the WR room showed their mediocrity when they went to other teams.

When Reed got hurt, they jumped over Nixon to Toure at punt return and it cost them.

Yes, I know Sic--Nixon's playing a regular role on D--but that doesn't stop them from putting him on kick returns, which he did right after that TD.

With that lead, all they needed that person to do was secure the catch. Put your hand up and catch the ball. Wouldn't have exposed him at all.

I understand not putting Nixon in for that punt. The game was out of reach for the Vikings so no need to risk Nixon. Also we all know that Nixon will almost never do a fair catch so he would be risking injury by returning the ball.

"Put someone back there you know is going to secure the catch."

Also, put someone back there who isn't worried about his future with the team (as Bo Melton clearly jumped Toure on the depth chart) and wanted to make a "play". I put this 99% on Bisaccia (and I'm a fan) for letting his guys do whatever they want. Sometimes the coach has to be the tough guy and give instructions. Just like Sometimes Nixon needs to be told not to bring out the kickoff from 7-8 yards deep in the endzone.

"Either the Packers were really good in their player assessment or they got really lucky. Hope he can stay healthy."

How about both. Gute may have hit on a market "inefficiency". Look for players who had a down year or had a bad combine day when they go into the draft, but had a very good previous year and try to figure out what was the reason for the dropoff. Wicks and Love both had meh draft years likely from a complete offensive change/huge player turnover their final year (If Wicks repeated his so/jr season he would have been one of the top WR). Reed had a bad 40 time at the combine and that sunk his value, but the Packers timed him on the MSU pro day and they had a much faster time. Even Walker and Enagbare were "damaged" in some way, but the Packers got great value from both of those picks.

Regarding Nixon's flag for unnecessary roughness on the viking QB: That flag Nixon got was more than Anthony Barr got, for a late hit on Rodgers, which broke his collarbone. Nixon did not injure the viking QB, at all. BTW, Barr was on the vikings sideline, last night.

Game balls: Everyone on the OL gets one as they blew open holes for our RBs and then they protected one all game. A solid effort! Our DBs , especially the "Tines" and Nixon, played really well keeping minnesota from moving the ball. Aaron Jones is the man! Bo Melton! Tucker Kraft! Sean Clifford! The coaching staff with a great game plan! Jordan Love is our QB!!!

Lame calls: STs miscues and our injuries. vikings players throwing punches at Packers players. the vikings threw a punch at, I think it was Kraft, when two other vikings were tackling him, and then again, a viking threw a punch at Dillon's broken thumb, when he was being tackled ,and then the melee after the game when Booth threw a punch and hit Aaron Jones in the face. Dirty players and sore losers, all around, on that squad.

I tend to agree: even though RB contracts tend to be suppressed, I don't know that 28 is worth a second deal.

I think 33 could be back. He'd have to take a significant pay cut (Tom Silverstein postulated that both Jones and P. Smith could be back under pay cuts that are mutually agreeable to both player and team).

He's got one year left on his deal with a big cash value in 2024, but next to no bonus money to convert to guarantees. A pay-cut down to what he could expect on the open market would get the Packers cap relief and still keep him compensated. They're on the hook for his void years no matter what.

Love the energy and catching skill of the receivers. Especially enjoy the confidence and beauty of Jayden Reed's play. Bo Melton and Ballentine have heart. I heard someone (MLF?) say they will spend the offseason digging deep to assess the hamstring issues with Watson and others. I heard the Niners employ some state of the art recovery practices such as cold water therapy and
and other modalities.

So happy for Jordan Love. He has shown class and poise through the entire 3-4 years. Enjoy his newfound quiet swag and his Steph-Curry towel over the head while off field-maybe wearing a ball cap would ruin his coiffure-lol.

To me that victory was a spectacular foot-in-mouth by the Vikings coupled with a great day from Reed and Melton in the air and Jones on the ground.

Hall never tested our D, Mullins might have a bit more, but we essentially were given a mulligan. For all the praise of Flores, his D was horrendous. Almost Barry-like acres of space. Their OL got it handed to them.

It’s almost like the Vikings didn’t show up. They had no offense. A great receiver is nothing of you can’t get him the ball. Thank you for the new year’s gift Minnesota.

We have already won this season. Love is real. He’s starting to impose himself in plays as well as making them. 63.1 percent passing for 3,843 yards, 30 touchdowns versus 11 interceptions. That’s a major win. His 93.8 rating is almost identical to Rodgers in his first year as a starter (16 games then) and 2 less interceptions—That’s a bet i’d never have taken!

I believe Tucker Kraft may prove to be the best TE on this roster. It’s not just his blocking improving, it’s his quick feet and balance that could really open things up. I’m one who also thought Melton could have helped at various times this season. It was great to see a player seizing the opportunity and finally see us making use of his speed as well.

This is a really good core of receivers and TEs. Ridiculously so given their youth. Love growing with these guys could really be exciting. As to the D, credit to the rush, but otherwise they will seldom be less tested. I am grateful for that. I enjoyed watching Vikings fans see Love turn the screw on a purple team that never showed up at home.

Overall there isn't value to draft a R1 WR. Sure it would be great to have a Justin Jefferson on the team. However, would you rather have him or Love? Usually WR is a position that can be filled in R2/3 with players of near equal quality as those in R1. Whereas the quality of QB, LT, CB, Edge, and when available DT drops off VERY quickly after R1. That is why those are the absolute premium positions and present the best value and use of R1 picks.

Of course it'll depend on who's healthy , but I think it's Watson, Doubs, Reed, Wicks, Heath, Melton as the top six. Toure on the outside looking in, unless somebody gets hurt, which is always possible.

Right now I would say WRs for next year are:

1 - Watson
2 - Reed

4 - Doubs
5 - Melton
6 - Heath

And if they keep a 7 possibly a guy like DuBose shows up. Or perhaps they draft a guy.

Dubose and Heath are very very similar and quite close in type to Wicks as well. Maybe one of Dubose/Heath eventually gets traded? I struggle to see all three playing in the same O.

I think we need another larger perimeter type. At present we just have Watson. I think we need to add options and depth in that role. Otherwise these are all rookie contract guys we can afford to continue to work with.

by far their best game all year on both sides of the ball. and has been noted for once we did not make a third string qb look like joe montana. so good to see Jones back being Jones; what a gift he has. but there is still no excuse for a kicker who misses so many extra points. we need to find another. and what a find Reed is, so that one sees his inestimable value when he is not on the field and one must resort to a replacement return man. next week we meet a much better bears team, in a replay of last year's one and IN. will the team be ready? they sure were not last year,

I wonder if Jaire has been trying to run the defense the way Rodgers was running the offense. Watching Love throw those short passes and check downs made me think Aaron was not doing that last year. Watching the defense appear to be assignment sure made me wonder why they weren't playing like that with Jaire in the game.

Just some random thoughts.

Jack White, one of my favorite musicians, would have loved this game with his weird obsession with the number 3 (interesting back story there). 33 points...Love's 3 TD throws...#33 going off for 120 yards.

So refreshing to not be pissed off about a soft defense for a change and just enjoy a good old ass whipping of a division rival.

Bring on the Bears...and the playoffs!!

Bo knows patience, perseverance, and seizing the opportunity.
***
If all of our wide receivers were to be healthy for the game against the Bears, which ones get the most reps?
If Bo is one of our two fastest WRs along with Watson, he would play a role that's unique in spreading the field (and we know that Watson, for all of his wow plays, can go down at any moment).
Exciting drama as far as our WRs as we approach the huge game against the Bears.

Bo Melton is the fastest WR on the team. He should be used as a direct substitute for #9 when he's out due to injury.

#11 has gotten the most everything because he's been open the most. He should be declared WR1, but he's been playing through substantial injury for at least 3 weeks.

So the defensive lowlight was a 71 yard drive that resulted in no points?

Curse Joe Barry!!!!

A year ago, we were 8-8 and needed to win one home game against a division opponent to make the playoffs, and our offense put 16 points on the board, not enough. From the 21 players that were dressed on offense for that game, gone are Rodgers, Cobb, Lazard, Lewis, Tonyan, Bakhtiari, Watson is still with the team but didn't dress. That's 7 guys out of 21. Overhaul.

Before the season, I predicted that 2023 Love would do as well as 2022 Rodgers, that the team would score more points, and that we'd make the playoffs (I thought we'd win the division).

In our last six games, we're averaging over 27ppg. I think this will be a 30ppg offense next year.

"A year ago, we were 8-8 and needed to win one home game against a division opponent to make the playoffs, and our offense put 16 points on the board, not enough. "

A lot of story-line parallels between last years' finale and this year: Packers in a play-in game with a maligned DC and seeming to be playing good ball against a young team that has been crappy for a long time, but has reversed their fortunes by being more physical and playing good ball with a QB that nobody seems to know what to do with (keep or punt) and being opportunistic on defense--and I'm sure would love to end the Packers' season for them at Lambeau.

"Before the season, I predicted that 2023 Love would do as well as 2022 Rodgers, that the team would score more points, and that we'd make the playoffs (I thought we'd win the division)."

I predicted 8-9, the same record, but more on the return of a playable Bakhtiari and an AJones being a receiving threat and workhorse. Instead, they get to this point on an ongoing OL evolution and on the back of their first-year QB.

"In our last six games, we're averaging over 27ppg. I think this will be a 30ppg offense next year."

Add a tackle and G-C in the draft, have a legit competition for starting roles in camp, and don't look back.

dobber, we have 5 picks in the Top 85 or so right now

The Packer Way would be to spend the first round pick on a defender, or franchise QB. Day Two would be when we would traditionally seek skill position offensive guys or possibly a lineman, like Jenkins or Rhyan. After we lose Nijman and Runyan to free agency, we're going to need to add four guys just to be able to dress out 9.

With 4 picks on Day Two, we're in a position to get two very good OL and two very good RBs, and we could be looking at a turbo charged offense....for less money than we're spending this year.

LH: Very much on board with two OL in the top five picks, but don't see the need for two RB's that high. Safety and ILB are positions of greater need to me. What are you seeing that has you thinking two RB's in the top five picks?

Game Ball to every member of wide-receiver corps.
Remember all the hand-wringing about needing another big-time free agent? It seems, to quote the Who, the Kids are All Right. Melton is a revelation. And when's the last time we had 3 TEs who can get open, catch, and block? Get Musgrave healthy next year, and we'll have it.
Now beat da Bears and take it from there. It's all gravy now. The Pack is Back.

Dobber,

"growing together" is happening, right before our eyes.

One of JL10's bigger problems is adjusting to the plethora of different targets. That's why I talk about one player as a direct substitute for another. #9 and Melton are nearly identical speed. While the height difference is substantial, the timing of hitting them in stride is at least similar. Same with Wicks and DuBose.

Using WRs intelligently like that is a big part of improving the reception rate, which also keeps interceptions down.

JL10 did complete at least one layup to #33, that progress is HUGE!

Happt new year

Lets give it up to the oline. I not sure sean ryan or john runyan played more snaps but they dominated this game

Zack Tom and Rasheed walker stoned outside pressure . Guards and center created huge holes all night. Without them the playmakers can not do what they do.

The finally used quay walker to his strength and showed he can be dominant . Will it continue. Van ness is coming along nice.

Tucker Kraft can block catch and is a dog love that guy.

Old man jones lol 29 on this team is still a player and always has been a special person.

Happy New Year to all Packer Fans!

Game Balls:

Jordan Love - To put it as the late great Stewart Scott always would say, He was as cool as the other side of the pillow. He missed a few throws but damn was he cool under pressure. Every down they did not know where the blitz was coming from but it didn't matter. He felt like he was a step ahead every time.

Aaron Jones - The offense is just different with him on the field. His speed is just so much better then what any other RB on the roster has. His shiftiness allows him to gain a lot of yards. He also looks extremely fresh.

Bo Melton - He will definitely be making it to the 53 this week. What a performance. Outside of the 4th down play that he dropped, he put on a great show. While that throw to him was not good, he was able to get his arms on it. Gotta pull it in.

Jayden Reed - He and Love are starting to get that Manning/Harrison, Rodgers/Nelson cohesion. There is something special starting to brew here. Reed is special! I can't wait to see what he can do fully healthy with the supporting cast around him. I can't wait to see this offense to its fullest ability.

Coaching staffs - The coaches deserve a ton of credit for this win. They have been ridiculed most of the year for various reasons. But they did a tremendous job in game planning for this game. The offense could have easily put up more points. The defense held them to 3. I don't really count the TD they gave up after the fumbled punt against the defense. They were put in a really bad spot. But the coaches deserve some credit for this win.

Honorable Mentions - Kraft, OL, Preston Smith, Corners.

Lame Calls:

Toure - While Melton really shined, Toure did not. Melton has clearly passed Toure on offense. And when he got an opportunity to do something and fumbles it away. I get it was as a punt returner, but for a guy who very well could be cut to elevate Melton, he blew a major opportunity.

Three and Out:

- Clark was a beast again.

- Kraft continues to be extremely reliable in the passing game.

- Anyone else listen to LaFleur's press conference. He was talking about how happy he was for the defensive staff and brought up how much heat Barry has taken lately. He said that he was proud of those guys. But when he said that he mentioned that it was just one game. But he was proud of those guys.
To me its a foregone conclusion that Barry is gone after this year.

To be fair, Barry's defense allowed Devito to play like a pro bowler against them. Baker Mayfield to have his best game of his career against them. Bryce Young to look the best he has his entire rookie year, all in the last 3 weeks. That doesn't include Desmond Ridder to look great.

So I will give him props for a good game plan this time and it worked. (i would say it was more based on the players and the Vikings then what Barry did).

Also, with the blitzes they did send, who made that call? Because that isn't a Barry thing. Have to believe LaFleur was in his ear to send more blitzes or something.

I doubt JA is thinking about being "expendable". there are the practical cap reasons for not thinking that but there is also the fact that he doesn't doubt himself. That can often be a good thing on the field but is hard to abide in a situation like the one he has created now.

I would be very disappointed if the front office made that stupid knee jerk reaction and got rid of Jaire Alexander based on a couple of back ups looking good against barely NFL quarterbacks. If that was the case then they should have kept the cheaper Rasul Douglas and garnered a higher return on a draft pick during the trade deadline. It’s that kind of thinking that seemingly bites this team in the ass from being a long term Super Bowl contender.

- Let Adams walk only to waste two second round picks recieved on a single wide receiver. Where does last years team go if he’s on the team? How good are these receivers with him teaching them how to be pros.
- Let Micah Hyde go then proceed needing a quality Safety for the ensuing 6-7 years including drafting one in the first round.
- Let Casey Hayward walk only to need better CB play followed by drafting corners in first and second round
- Let a so so Blake Martinez walk only to go to free agency to find a MLB
- Let a low cost TE with good production leave then spend two draft picks on TE the following off season.
- Let Brian Bulaga leave only to be crippled by the inability to pass block in the following seasons play off loss
- Let Corey Linsley go then spend the entire next season behind inadequate Center play and poor rushing offensive production
- Let Jordy Nelson leave despite the discounted contract proposed by his representatives and then not replace him until the fifth round with MVS

Look I understand bringing in cost effective youth to balance out larger contracts but these things should be planned for. Spending a second round pick on a center, two seconds on a single WR, a third/ Third/ fourth on three tight ends, a first on a safety, and a first and second on corners. To play devils advocate here what if they keep all of the names above except Adams (only real large contract of the group) then allocate those picks towards positions of supreme need which has been WR, OL, Edge I think the organization plays a lot differently because of it. However I do recognize hindsight is 20/20. I’ve just been frustrated with the way the organization goes about drafting talent

"Let Adams walk only to waste two second round picks recieved on a single wide receiver. Where does last years team go if he’s on the team? How good are these receivers with him teaching them how to be pros."

Packers got the Raiders R1 and R2. The R1 was turned into Quay Walker and used their R2 + Raiders R2 to trade up and get Watson. Don't forget that Adams said he would not play for the Packers anyways. They even offered him more money than what the Raiders offered.

"Let Micah Hyde go then proceed needing a quality Safety for the ensuing 6-7 years including drafting one in the first round.

Let Casey Hayward walk only to need better CB play followed by drafting corners in first and second round"

Those happened under Ted Thompson so that is ancient history now.

"Let a so so Blake Martinez walk only to go to free agency to find a MLB"

Martinez wasn't as good as you think. He made most of his tackles 5 yards beyond the LOS and was a liability in coverage. Not to mention he was offered $30M over 3 years by the Giants after the 2019 season. Way too much money for an average at best player. The Giants cut him after the 2021 season and he is on his 2nd team since then. He even retired for a while in 2022. Sounds like that was a good job by Gute to not waste money on him.

"Let a low cost TE with good production leave then spend two draft picks on TE the following off season."

I take it you mean Tonyan and Lewis from last year? Neither has done anything with their current teams. Kraft and Musgrave have been massive upgrades over them. Again the right call by Gute.

"Let Brian Bulaga leave only to be crippled by the inability to pass block in the following seasons play off loss"

Bulaga was given a big contract by the Chargers. He missed 6 games in 2020 and the entire 2021 season. They released him after the 2021 season and he is basically retired. Once again a good job by Gute.

"Let Corey Linsley go then spend the entire next season behind inadequate Center play and poor rushing offensive production"

That one hurt a bit as Linsley was good for the Chargers until this year. He is currently on IR with a heart issue.

"Let Jordy Nelson leave despite the discounted contract proposed by his representatives and then not replace him until the fifth round with MVS"

Jordy was over the hill. He was never the same after the 2015 ACL tear. Right call by Gute.

From all your examples only one was a miss by Gute and that was with Linsley.

I believe this may be the first game for some time where the Packers had an opponent down and demonstrated that killer instinct to put the game away on both sides of the ball. I am very happy to see this determination.

Let's not celebrate to much. Big business rides in defeating the Bears who are playing much better on both sides of the ball. We have been down this road at least twice in recent memory where we had playoff opportunities, only to have them squashed. Don't underestimate the Bears and take care of business. Go Pack!!!!!

I think I will draw some fire for this…

Matt LaFleur and OC Adam Stenavich probably deserve game balls for this game. The offensive game plan put up 33 points on Minny. More importantly, the Packers had a 15 minute advantage in TOP. This kept Joe Barry’s defense on the bench. It also kept the Vikings’ defense on the field and they were getting worn out. Nice to see the other team’s defense get gashed for big plays.

You shouldn't draw any fire for it.

They put up 33 points, and could have had more if Love connected on the play to Melton.

But they also did this without Watson, Wicks and Musgrave. Reed went out at half time.

They did a tremendous job.

Where was this D the last 3 weeks Joe????

Why continually retreat back into your ineffective soft shell comfort zone strategy when it clearly doesn't work?

You show way too much Defensive respect to QB's who haven't earned it.

John Harbaugh exemplified that blueprint in Super Bowl XLVII - make a suspect QB beat you with their arm (but still put at least some pressure on them).

That 91 yard drive which ate up a big chunk of clock was one of the best parts of the game for me. There was no chunk of yardage gifted to the offense in the form of a defensive penalty, it was a pure 91 yard drive and a pretty complete body of work. That was a great drive.
-
Carlson is concerning but not worth giving up on, yet. We all knew there would be bumps on the road with all the youth on the team and a brand new kicker out of college added to that. Yeah, they probably rolled the dice a little with his pick. He doesn't let one miss define him and he moves on, and that's a good thing. There are still some positives that they should be able to work on. If he starts stringing together misses, then yeah. Work him, work him, and certainly bring in some competition to push him. Luckily for him no real loss of a game can be placed on him, yet.
-
A while back I asked a question about Toure. I got my answer. All the other guys in that unit are just better, that's all. Last year I thought he showed promise and thought he had good hands. Maybe tasking him as a punt returner was a mistake but it exposed him. He's probably headed for the PS, or another employer.

I think the most dangerous play was Love to run inthe endzone. He is not a scrambler and is not fast enough. He willhave a long career as long as he avoids plays where is upeneded. HOw many running QBS play a long tiome, very few and they are all one bad injury from being retired. Next time give it to Dillon or Kraft and leave Love to pass the ball . I hope history does not repeat itself next week.We lost to the Lions because of special teams and Aaron refusing to throw to anyone but his favorite receiver. Love is a much better QB than Aaron. He does not have a faovorite receiever which makes him dangerous. Our special team sucked again. That is why we lost last year and in the previous year playoff game. Hopefully they will find a punt returner and a extra point kicker. They will find a way to keep Shileds in the pocket. Kapernik got 190 yards against us. The running QB is the Packer nemesis. The Bears will play hard because Fields is playing for a big contgrtact. He needs a big game if he wants to stay a Bear or get a big contract. I think he is not long for the game. Scrambling QBS are exciting but never last after they sustain a knee injury, He is risking it on every run . oh Do not play Watson except as a decoy. He cannot catch consistently. iN FACT, TRADE HIM AND GET SOME GOOD DEFENSIVE PLAYERS. WATSON IS NOT THE ANSWER, DOUBS AND ALLTHE OTEHR RECIEVERS ARE GREAT.
