Packers add Taylor and Winfree to roster, place Watkins on IR

Earlier this afternoon, the Packers announce they have signed RB Patrick Taylor to the active roster, elevated WR Juwann Winfree from the practice squad to the active roster for tomorrow's game in Tampa Bay and placed WR Sammy Watkin on injured reserve.

Regarding injured reserve, there are three main changes this year:

  • Teams are allowed to return a maximum of eight players from the IR during the season.
  • A player can be designated to return a maximum of two times during the season, with both counting towards the team’s grand total of eight designations allowed.
  • Players are eligible to return from the IR after four games have elapsed since being placed on the list.

This is Winfree's second time being elevated from the practice squad, meaning the Packers can do so one more time before being required to sign him to the active roster.

Taylor has spent time on the Packers’ active roster and practice squad, appearing in 10 games, including last week against the Chicago Bears after being elevated to the active roster for gameday

Too bad about Watkins, but my biggest concern is OLB depth. Gary and Smith cannot keep playing 90% of the snaps each game - they will wear out and will be more injury prone. That is why I think the Packers need to sign a veteran EDGE - Benson Mayowa would be the best option. He had 13 sacks, 37 pressures, and 5 forced fumbles between 2019-20, his last full seasons and the last where he played OLB (he also never played more than 61% of the snaps in either season). He only had one sack last year with Seattle, but was playing ILB, and only for about 46% of snaps, dropping into coverage often. He'd be cheap, too. I think the Packers would have little to lose and much to gain from signing Mayowa.

Well, that didn't take long.

When Watkins was signed several guys here wrote about his injury history and risk. They were right.

Very weak at WR and TE. Pack should trade for Kumerow. He’d be the best WR on their roster. He just caught a 40 yard pass the other day and does not drop the ball. No Packer this year has a 40 yard reception. Gute was stupid to cut him when Rodgers considered him the #2 receiver in the last camp he was here.

So his 25 receptions and 3 TDs in his 5 year career would make him the best receiver on the roster. Yeah...probably not.

Any of the Packers have a 40 yard reception this year? Nope, but Kumerow does.

Well, actually yes. I guess you missed Watkins 55 yard reception last game. Last I checked 55>40.

Another marginal athlete, age 30 with under 500 yards in his career. Last year he caught 2 balls for 24 yards. Winfree is a better use of targets. We would be better off throwing to him.

They need a real TE that can go inside and out. They should be dealing as we speak. Lewis is already hitting the wall.

Use Tom or Jones. Lewis is the last of a breed. He doesn’t catch much anyway.

He’s looking like an injury settlement soon. It’s time to let the rookies play.

He's a vested veteran. His contract is guaranteed after week 1. Keep him and see if/when he recovers.

Makes the most sense, but don't tell that to the Kumerow crowd.

If you have proven talent, play it. If you have nothing but potential play that.

So 6 games into the season and he will have played 2 games and you really dont know if he will be ready or effective in game 7. This has been a problem for most of his career and getting older has made it worse. last 2 seasons started 9 games. With this start dont count on it. Had 2 good seasons his first 2 years 2014-2015 and then fell way off. That was 7 years ago. Thats why nobody signed him

This was almost inevitable when we threw that money at Rodgers. It’s why we have no 3rd OLB of note. Even pushing more cap than rational forward, we did well to sign Campbell and Douglas and find a low cost WR with upside and very high risk. We just about have enough for an emergency injury signing or two from the discount retread bin for this season and a few minimum cost depth fills.

We gambled on Rodgers being able to beat the odds with Rookies. It may sound crazy, but it’s true. If he and we don’t use them accordingly, we will simply decline into mediocrity. Watkins was a penny pinched punt to break that reality.

Now it we are forced into facing the odds-on inevitability. It’s the Doubs/Toure/Winfree show and Lazard or bust now with Watson hopefully soon to return. Cobb is a few key plays a game guy at this point, and still an injury risk.
