Packers announce pair of roster moves at running back

-- The Green Bay Packers announced a pair of roster moves in their backfield on Saturday, swapping one out for another.

The team's official release informed that they had placed running back Akeem Judd on the reserve/retired list and presumably consequently signed LeShun Daniels to replace him.

Sunday would've marked two weeks since Judd signed with the Packers, and it was an underwhelming stint that featured two limited looks into his abilities against the Tennesee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers. In two preseason games, Judd carried the ball 11 times for 22 yards.

Daniels, meanwhile, has been somewhat of a journeyman since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa in2017. He bounced around between three practices squads -- New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers and Washington Redskins -- before finally seeing regular-season action towards the end of last season.

Daniels' rookie year ended on the Redskins' injured reserve list due to a hand injury, however, and he was officially waived by the team in March.

Daniels offers the Packers another option at running back while Aaron Jones continues to rehab his hamstring injury -- and has yet to play in the preseason -- and Jamaal Williams nurses a sprained ankle.

Second-year running back Devante Mays is also dealing with a hamstring injury. Outside of the aforementioned three, the only healthy names in the Packers' tailback stable are Ty Montgomery, Joel Bouagnon and Daniels, who will wear No. 46.

Bouagnon has a chance to stick. I don't know much about his pass pro but he offers some power and falls forward. He's not going to break off huge runs, but much like Williams he'd be good for ground and pound. Just not impressed with Ripkowski...

Rip never seemed the same after his playoff fumble. Before that he was looking like a long time contributor. Since then, well underwhelming on offense would be kind.

The vikes have a nice stable of running backs and they aren't hurt. A couple may be available when team has to start making cuts. Some decent corners will be available too, so maybe the pack can get whole picking up vikes players?

Packers took Odom from Atlanta last year and he had 0 impact on 2017 and hasn't shown anything in 2018. Getting a player another team released can be a steal longterm but more often than not there's a reason they were released.

As contrarian (there's that word again) as your comment sounds chuck, mike zimmer is a darn good defensively minded coach (I'm jumping through the fact that he and rick spielman would be in lockstep..... as opposed to what has happened at GB recently - apologies if this offends, but the logician in me still can't fathom how Ted, Mike and Dom got so disconnected without someone pulling on the reigns) . As such I'd agree with taking a peek at any discards from their RB or DB rooms. I also think that checking out any Pittsburgh draft off-casts too (at deep positions) as i think that they do a a "hullava job" constructing their roster.

Side thought - MM needs to get on the same page as Nick Saban if GB intends to continue drafting Alabama players. 'Bama undoubtedly get the cream of the HS crop and do great things with them. MM needs to tap into some of that - HHCD is a better player than what we are seeing, and between he and Eddie Lacy I'm starting to see the shoots of a trend occurring where successful bama products hit the pros, do some good things then fade.... is the CBA freedom affecting these guys (who may need persistent driving to remain successful)??

Lets hope those injuries to the RB's will not keep them from the regular season. Bouganon looks like a power back and always moving forward. But Judd and 11 carries for 22 yards just isn't getting the job done. I sure hope Leshun Daniels can be productive in Green Bay. Maybe the Packers can find a gem when teams start making their cuts. If Monty goes down to injury the Packers are in serious trouble at RB. Time for Williams, Jones, and Mays to get healthy and stay healthy.

Croat made a point a couple of articles ago and I tend to agree with him - in broad brush terms, a RB is only as good as the o-line that gives him the running lanes (and I'll add the QB that sells the pass option to hold off secondary rushers).

If he's getting stuffed at the line of scrimmage by 250lb LB's or 300+ lb D-lineman then his injury probability is going to be greatly increased.

Granted that Le'veon Bell makes some great things out of nothing, but his running style is unique - but case in point Adrian Peterson, who didn't dominate the packers (primarily because they knew he was getting the ball instead of the QB passing it).

It’s getting to a point where if you can’t play get rid of them. It’s getting ridiculous. Lombardi wouldn’t stand for this. Every year there’s positions that are a mess. It gets real old. If they aren’t hurt they violated some rule. Time to put on the big boy pants. This is the NFL. We all know what that stands for.

Two of the biggest factors that people ignore when they talk about how Lombardi would make today's players play through injury or hit the road:

1) The overall level of competition is vastly superior today than it was then. That is not to say there were not great players back then- there absolutely were- but today, there are MORE top athletes competing across the league, and the margin that separates success and failure in the one-on-one match ups is far more narrow. Modern football players are world class athletes today, and the difference in the fraction of a second lost from playing on a tight hamstring or sprained ankle when the guy across from you is also a world class athlete is the difference between success and failure more so now than back in the day.

2) The players today, for better or for worse, are now MASSIVE financial investments, and more often than not, it is the trainers and coaches who shut down a player because they are looking at the investment. Also, again, regardless if player "a" wants to play through the injury, if player "b" will be more competitive at 100% than player "a" at 80%, they are going to sit that player.

Croat - No salary cap in the Lombardi era. Like Dobber correctly posted, no salary cap until 1993. Roster sizes were 33 players until 1960 when the league expanded and the number of games went from 12 to 14.
At that time the rosters were increased to 40 players but I think only 33 or maybe 35 were dressed.

Back then you had less teams and players, playing less games. The athletes back then did not have the conditioning facilities or nutritional understanding that we have today. They were not as big or as fast, although there were many players like Bob Hayes, Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Herb Adderly, Dave Robinson, John Unitas, Joe Namath and plenty of others who could have played and succeeded in this or any other era.

Most players needed to work at other jobs during the off seasons to make ends meets. The Lombardi Packers played for their championship bonuses (average $1500) because it made the difference between making it through the year financially or not.

In spite of all of that the Lombardi era players were better fundamentally than today's players even though today's players are better athlete's. The games were better, the officiating was better and because the game was slower and played on natural grass there were much fewer injuries.
Thanks, Since '61

Totally agree. The Packers are too distracted by side shows, theme parks, toiletmaker lodges and pr bs. Either you back up Rodgers with the players he needs and stop using him as a cash cow or let him go where he's genuinely appreciated. In Wisconsin, simple gratitude is a kind of sign of weakness and peasant reluctance to follow orders is a kind of strength.
Enough already. Either live up to the tradition or go back to Sheboygan, Guutkoont

The side shows and theme parks are pretty much the norm in the modern NFL. It's how teams generate extra cash flow. The teams that don't have them are working to get them.

I doubt they distract the players very much.

Small market teams like the Green Bay Packers have only been financially feasible in the modern era due to the league wide revenue sharing policies of the NFL.

If revenue sharing is ever re-worked or eliminated, it would be become extremely difficult (or unthinkable, impossible) for the Packers to field a competitive team in the future. The title town district is a buffer and layer of financial protection should the current league revenue sharing significantly change or evaporate. It's those investments the Packers are making now to keep football in Green Bay for the future.

As to it being a distraction- NO. The football people deal strictly with football. The financial guys deal with financials. No distraction whatsoever.

I always liked Jackson. I saw him against Wisconsin last year. He had what I'll call "sticky" coverage." His pedestrian foot speed never scared me much, cause he is a hardworking kid that hones his craft every day. I think we have a chance to have one or two elite defenders on our back end before the year is out.

Remember Samkon Gado, nice pick up. There will be a ton of RB's after final cuts. I always wondered why no one made a play for Smith in Dallas behind Elliot. I would like to see him in the backfield he can still play, no too old, and hasn't had to many carries in Dallas.

To your point, easiest position for transition traditionally. Also one where you need bodies to run practices let alone for PS games to limit impact on those heading for the roster.

At this point, therefore, most teams have several beyond number required in season, so pickings are few. Hopefully Mays and Jones get back for game 4 at least. Until then, definitely need depth with Williams dinged.

Nice comments on the running backs. Without William's and two game suspension loser Jones, the Pack running backs are not very good or scare anyone. Hard to believe the Pack is still searching and has such a difficult time hitting a winner. Our scout team needs new a new vocation!! Then again, I guess MM just wants a blocker in pass protection, as he will fail to use the run or the backs again this year. Mark it!! Hope I'm proved wrong, but doubt it.

You make it sound like the Packers main purpose for signing backs the last two days is because they aren't happy with what they have.

Do you even follow the packers? They're signing camp bodies right now because the RB's are all nursing injuries, and it's better to have those guys get healthy than force them to take reps in practice.. someone HAS to play RB in practice.

When jones and Williams get healty, thise camp bodies get released. I'm tempted to say the same thing about Mays, but he hasn't been in camp at all, so who knows.

we've got a lot of work to do! I'm a little disappointed in the development of our back up linemen. That doesn't mean we can't get there. But we aren't close to where we need to be yet!

To stand up there and tell a boldface lie that no one will believe is silly.

Unfortunately, the same 'ol, same 'ol.
Draft 3 RBs one year and a year later the Pack is already searching for a 'real one'. --- Three 2nd string RBs on your 53 does very little for the "O".

One of the two 1st rounders in 2019 will be a 1st string RB wearing G&G, finally. --- Gute will figure this out by the end of season 2018.

In todays NFL, a back has to be pretty special to be drafted in the 1st round. I know there was one drafted high this year but that's not the norm anymore. If theres one available that deserves to go that high, by all means do. I'd rather see one taken in round 2 or 3. This team needs pass rushers and offensive tackles much worse!
