Packers bringing back Tyler Ervin

The running back claimed off waivers gave the Packers a much needed boost on special teams.

From ESPN:

Ervin was a revelation for the Packers return game after being picked up off waivers in early December and showed real promise as a change of pace on offense.

Here's hoping a full offseason (whatever that might end up being in 2020) in the offense helps take that unit to another level.

Ervin, a 5-foot-10, 192-pound fourth-year player out of San Jose State, was originally selected by the Houston Texans in the fourth round (No. 119 overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Green Bay hasn't had a return game for eons, and Ted Thompson insisting it was Trevor Davis was putrid.

Davis didn't have "IT". Swirvin Irvin transformed the Kick return game to the best we've seen in a decade or better. Great signing..

Very happy to have him back and not to have returner as a black hole as we have for years. I hope he can contribute more offensively too, since he will be active. I was concerned we would have competition for him after the high profile ST turnaround he triggered. Now any WR drafted can focus on receiving, first, which I much prefer even if we get a full camp.

Hey who knew that players with elusiveness and speed would be helpful? Gute... maybe you should do more of this? Or, just sign Funchess and hope that fixes the O... smh

Speed has always been important, but it’s only one factor. I’m a fan of tall WRs and always have been, but staying healthy, and catching, and being able to block. You can scheme a guy open if you want to, or need to.

It is apparent that Gute likes big WRs.

I think our #2 WR spot is like a fullback.....somebody who doesn’t see the ball a lot but helps in other ways.

Pitch and catch with Adams and get the ball to the RBs. I think that’s about 75% of our offense right there.

If there is an opening day, yeah. And assuming there is, how do you think rookie's will do with less of an offseason? Even with a weak/expensive crop of FA WRs, we needed one who fit the WR2 bill. I don't think Funchess does that. I don't think he will mesh well with ARod (no speed, drops, inconsistent routes, mental errors). I don't think he's any better than Lazard. So... he removes Kumerow? Great. Really aiming high there...

Sadly I think this season could be curtailed. I just can’t see players going into games in late August without practices for conditioning and learning reasons. Not sure how long they will need physically, but installation will be a mess. So Rookies will Be particularly challenged.

I’d argue that Funchess, as a vet will be easier to assimilate than rookies but that his, Adams and Lazard’s route experience should enable any rookie to be focused on limited roles. The anti-MM approach. Agile slot, speedster. Let them focus and compete.

This year coaches who tailor the learning curve to the situation will likely out perform. Can LaFleur do that?

Well, we know Rodgers knows who can perform. His advocating for Lazard to get on the field saved the passing game
in 2019. Just get talent with your high picks not projections.

Suh signed for 1 yr, $8M.
Zach Kerr signed, undisclosed.

OTOH, Brockers couldn't agree on the final language and is a UFA again. Still some big DL out there:
Jernigan
Reed
Peko
Mebane
Shelby Harris
Derek Wolfe
Michael Bennett because Bennetts work out so well in GB.

I hear that many teams are inserting language that voids parts of the payment, notably signing bonuses, if a player can’t pass a physical with the team doctors at an unspecified future date.

This could be an issue for players coming off certain injuries. Probably contributes to Snacks being unsigned. It may also mean some contracts may not come together now.

They burned him last year during his tryout, he signed with KC the next day and he ended up with a SB ring. Spagnola knew how to use him in his flex 4-3/. He performed well during the playoffs and was a Big Play guy the second half of the KC comeback SB Win. He had zero motivation to be back in Green Bay.

Our DL sucks! Did anyone else notice the wide open spaces that a truck could have driven thru time & time again in San Francisco!???? Two times actually.

Shelby Harris, Timmy Jernigan, big Pek would be great additions. Get us 2 of those guys, and then ignore that spot in the draft, focus on ILB, WR, OR and TE. And another CB!

I'll puke if we sign the racist AH Bennett. He's Jussie Smollet with less publicity. Terrible person.

Bringing Ervin back was a no-brainer, he's elusive, has good instincts, and can be used on offense too. Most of the Packers' WR's are already tall, beefy guys. What I'd really like is for the Packers to draft a smaller, shiftier, slot guy in the mold of Brandin Cooks to give opposing teams' LB's and safetys nightmares trying to catch and tackle him. I don't follow college ball closely enough to know who that might be, but I keep hearing this draft is very deep in WRs.

I think he’s got that spark the team needs on returns. Now if we could get the whole unit to act as a coordinated group. We haven’t seen that in years. The special teams can make a difference both good and bad. Looks like the team is getting it. Good move to bring T. Ervin back.

He looks more like a slot than a running back and did catch 73 passes for 642 yards on his last 2 college seasons. I don’t know if his hands are that good, but it would be worth a look in the competitive mix. He had a 39 inch vertical at the combine, so he can jump and we know he is shifty. Even if not the best trad slot on the roster, he might be the most viable option to adapt who is active on any given game day.

At the very least, he's an option that can check in and out of various spots. Adds a lot of versatility when the Packers go to their 2-back looks to be able to keep the same players on the field and limit defensive substitutions.

When creating something, any student is always trying to make a little sketch of phrases, for example, this is an essay, and you always have some great ideas, but you can still get stuck somewhere in the path of creating your own essay for lack of imagination or time. Everything is in order, do not worry if this happens. You can always hire a sameday essay assistant from https://samedayessay.com/essay_writer.

I LOVE what Gute is doing. EVERY ,move he's made is going to allow the Packers to draft the player who will help them the most in 2020.

I think it's a WR but with Wagner he doesn't have to reach for a Tackle. Kirksey allows him not to reach for an ILB. Funchess is an upgrade over MVS, Kumerow, and Allison. Ervin takes care of the ST return duties and he'll help at RB...

Awesome Gute!

I agree on all your points. I thought Erwin was a necessary signing. And it looks like a WR will be the number one pick. Question is there enough money left for a DL signing? And should the Pack trade down and pick up another third or fourth round pick. And the age old question, can Gute hit on 3 or 3 draft picks to be immediate contributors?

The DT position is unlikely to see another Clark due to where we draft and the DT class. So we are presumably not talking about the rare beast, a truly disruptive DT.

If that is the case, there are still some FAs available, as well as later round draft candidates. Pure run pluggers don’t fly off the board.

So we may draft or sign, but I don’t expect anything more than a new Lancaster if we do. Great if we upgrade the position, but I don’t see an obvious high pick that will do more than block the middle and likely to fall to us.

There is also the possibility that they know something impeded Lancaster late in the season and see most of those talked about as merely more costly equivalents.

The good news is that there are usually big but one dimensional DTs in UDFA (Lancaster was one) and in later FA at a low price.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Gute took either or both of those approaches if the draft doesn’t drop something more in his lap.

Hahahah, you're starting to grow on me....like a fungus. He could have been a good signing. No contract details ,but only got a bit over a mill last season. Lp be patient , I'm confident that we can find a solid ILB in the draft. Also, remember some players blossom in their second year,Summers.

I’m not sure a player like Raglan holds any interest. It seems plausible that run stuffing ILBs only survived in GB the last two yeasts as the result of injury necessity.

I like Summers from the beginning but as bad as the Packers were he did not get 1 single defensive snap so I doubt we see him this season much more or enough to make a difference. A rookie linebacker from the draft is not gonna come in and take command of a complex nfl defense from the get go. Gute dropped the ball this season.

There will be a tremendous pile of Reggie Ragland type players available at or around the vet minimum after the draft and before the start of camp...or, as the Packers were able to do the past two years with Morrison and Goodson, by trade at the start of games in September.

Based on the last couple of years, if we don’t bring in a Raglan type it will probably be a good sign that we have upgraded, since it’s pretty clear that’s option c at best in the view of the team.
