Packers, CB Davon House to Discuss Future This Week

-- It's probably a matter of 'if,' not 'when' the Green Bay Packers decide to re-sign cornerback Davon House.

According to ESPN's Rob Demovsky, the Packers are expected to sit down with House this week and discuss a return in 2018.

The Packers signed House last season after a down second year in Jacksonville, and he played significantly more than he should've due to injuries striking the Packers' cornerback room.

There's been mutual interest reported between both parties throughout the course of the offseason, however, progress has yet to be made.

The Packers traded away cornerback Damarious Randall to the Cleveland Browns and signed Tramon Williams, who spent most of the first nine years of his career in Green Bay. He pieced together a stellar season last year with the Cardinals at age 34, and at 35, the Packers are hoping for more of the same.

Both Williams and House would bring a strong sense of leadership to a group of young cornerbacks that's expected to have another new addition via the draft. Multiple mocks have the Packers landing a few different cornerbacks in the early rounds of April's draft, from Iowa's Josh Jackson to Ohio State's Denzel Ward.

House is one of seven unrestricted free agents the Packers have yet to retain. Tight end Richard Rodgers, tackle Ulrick John, guard Jahri Evans, defensive lineman Quinton Dial, linebacker Ahmad Brooks and long-snapper Brett Goode are the others.

The Packers initially had nine UFAs, but safety Morgan Burnett signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and wide receiver -- and special teams ace -- Jeff Janis signed with the Cleveland Browns.

House played in just 12 games last season after battling through injuries, but could very well function as formidable depth and would provide a solid rotational piece when called upon. He was able to play in multiple positions last year aside from his usual boundary spot, including down in the box in certain packages and scarcely in the slot.

Bringing House back makes a lot of sense on a lot of different levels.

Currently the Packers have Williams with a ton of experience, and everyone else is basically in their 2nd year. Also we have to assume they will be bringing in at least one drafted player to the position. They need more experience.

When House was healthy last year he played pretty well. Bringing him back at the very least to compete for the 2nd-3rd-4th spot IMO is the smart move.

I have no problems with brining him back. We desperately need a couple average CBs to go with hopefully someone much better.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear House is even average. Sign him. If he shows to be better than even guys like Pipkins and Donatello Brown fine, but I'm hoping those guys improve enough to make House redundant.

In all honesty, if guys like Pipkins, Rollins, Brown, Hawkins, Waters and rookies come in and make House expendable, I think we are sitting really good.

At the very least House provides insurance. To me its a smart move. House would make a really good number 3-4 CB.

He's worth less than what Jordy got offered, so if it's in that range of $$'s, I say go for it.

Bring him back, he will be cheap we need corners end of story. He was banged up last year if hes healthy we could certainly do worse than him for however many snaps he would end up seeing.

They could definitely stand to have another vet CB. House is no worse than the other options available. He's not any better than a few others, either. It is all about who will sign at the Packers' price.

There is obviously someone that has nothing better to do in their life then to come onto this website and use that dislike button. I would assume its a butt hurt Vikings fan that can't stand positive Packers talk.

But hey, if it brightens their day, have fun. Perhaps its a great stress reliever. I have no idea.

I have never visited another team's fan site in my life. But I suppose if you're stuck being a Bears, Vikings or Lions fan it probably makes you feel good to go to the site of a team that has won multiple Super Bowls, if nothing else but to dream.

Right.

I haven't had the time lately to come on here even.

I bet it makes them feel better about themselves to be apart of the conversation.

Kinda sums up the sad state of our CB situation when Devon House becomes a possible upgrade option.

No joke - I really wonder sometimes what games people were watching last year that gave them the impression this guy did anything notable.

Did any of the corners still on the roster from last year do anything notable? Maybe King played well a part of the time..

Yeah I think King looked good in flashes, and at least showed some speed and ability to stay with receivers.

Randall made some plays too, despite his immaturity and sideline antics.
Did House have any impact plays, besides a few tackles?

I don't know, I guess I'm jaded by the fact the guy was injured on every other play he was in the game. I have no patience for guys that are ALWAYS injured and taking themselves out of games.

But Finwiz, he played hurt and played well. That says something when most of your CB room looks like extras from the walking dead. He's accountable and available. Sign him.

Im not saying he did anything last year but id rather have veteran depth at corner in a guy who has made plays in his career than an undrafted free agent ...no problem with house as a depth signing

This isn't about House being an upgrade, it's simply about providing veteran insurance depending on what happens the next few months. If the Packers can draft, trade or sign someone better, House can be released without a cap hit.

Trust in Pettine, if he thinks House can help his defense then sign him.

While House is no hall of famer he is a competent press corner. Unfortunately we elected to play him in zone most of the time.

In the last few seasons, the only way for a Packers secondary player to excel seems to be to change teams. Well now we have changed coaches and GM so who knows what our current players may be capable of.

House provides depth going into camp and, if we are going to be playing press regularly, i’d
be happy seeing him on the season depth chart.

If all this organization can do is recycle old players, it is in trouble.

Doesn't anyone else see that?

How does a team improve their pass defense by signing mediocre pass defenders?

They can get better by using what they have more effectively. I believe the last DC did a poor job of maximizing the potential effectiveness of the players he had. So I think there is potential for improvement without massive roster turnover

Exactly. Williams is OK for me. But House is not. I would rather take a chance on someone who has a better upside. House is a guy you bring in when everyone is hurt for the veteran minimum. Not for starting because he has experience or is a known entity.

I am admittedly getting antsy as AR gets older. That means I am fine with acquiring a few older players who can contribute right now.

House is purely a money issue for me. I think we need one more veteran CB (and to draft at least two, probably fairly high). It can be House. Could have been someone else. Might still be DRC or Breeland, et al.

I am really holding out hope for Breeland. The fact that we were reportedly very interested in his services prior to him going to Carolina gives me reason to believe that we should take another run at him. I dont remember the deal he got from Carolina but i remember thinking it wasnt nearly what i would have expected and youd have to think his next deal will be a few bucks less. Hell it could even be a 1 year similar to what Melvin signed for which was 6.5 mill.

If the Packers decide to give House another shot for minimum money I think they should (if he's the best veteran option/money left). If he plays well enough to be on the 53 - great. If not it would seem like a low risk for a position group where the cupboard appears to be a bit bare and he's at least shown that he's a veteran who leads by example and is willing to help the youngsters. Kind of the type of player Pettine is said to like to be a veteran mentor to the newbies. I still think they may kick the tires on him but wouldn't be surprised if Gute is waiting to see who some late cuts will be and how the draft shakes out. Maybe Pettine isn't as nervous about the talent at CB as the fans are (well, I can hope, right?).

Oh trust me, they'll wait for the draft now. Why? Reap the bottom of the barrel for low money with hopes of contributing. Go Russ!! You da main man, ask Jordy. We got a replacement FA quality receiver yet? Lol. You foolish, misguided fans. Wake up!

Exactly spot on. Ball still there (mistake), and TT still there influencing I believe. So changes, Pettine good, otherwise not much. Gute is a puppet by those still there and true, but follows a relic philosophy. Sorry to burst so many Pollyanna bubbles.
