Packers claim former linebacker off of waivers

-- Even in the early stages of August leading into the week of the Green Bay Packers' first preseason game, the wheels of player acquisition never stop churning.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Packers claimed defensive end James Hearns off of waivers from the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday.

Hearns, a former linebacker from Louisville before transitioning to a full-time end, was signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in May. In four collegiate season with the Cardinals, he compiled 101 tackles, 17.5 sacks and was arguably their best pass rusher in 2016.

Hearns was one of two players the Cowboys released on Thursday to make room for two new additions: offensive tackle Korren Kirven and defensive end Joby Saint Fleur.

Hearns, 24, is the same age as his soon-to-be teammate, Dean Lowry, who is entering his third NFL season at age 24. The Packers are also relatively well-stocked along the defensive line.

Defensive tackle Mike Daniels suffered a quadriceps injury last Monday but returned to practice on Thursday. Other than that, the Packers haven't suffered any notable injuries along their defensive line through the first six practices of training camp.

The Packers had the possibility of keeping Hearns as a defensive end or reverting him back to linebacker, and according to the team's official transaction on Saturday, Hearns will indeed be playing linebacker.

Hearns will wear No. 49 for the Packers.

Obviously wasn't impressing the the cowgirls in camp as a DE. Let's see how he looks standing up at OLB.

Speaking of OLB, I've been following most Packers sites and haven't heard anything about Gilbert or Biegel. I was hoping to hear something good by now. Anyone know how they are doing?

Better watch yourself. I asked that same question 2 days ago and got a thumbs down vote.

They say no news = good news.
But in this case i'd assume no news = they haven't done anything newsworthy. I hope im wrong.

Nothing at all on Gilbert. Odom lost 20 pounds. IIRC, the only mention of Biegel is that AR drew him offsides with a hard count and threw a TD on the free play.

Seems like another August roster cut. Meh. Ask him about his elbow.

At 6'3" and 249 pound he would seem to be a possible option at OLB. We're not necessarily flush with OLB prospects so it doesn't hurt to bring him in and see what he can do.

Under 250 lbs and playing defensive end exclusively? No wonder the 'Boys let him go. Must have been a pass rush specialist?

He's even small for a 3-4 OLB. Good size for a 4-3 LB though.

Bill Walsh seems to think 6'3" 250# is the perfect size for an OLB.

I don't know how much Bill Walsh had to do with the defense, but I'll give you that George Seifert's OLB's were a bit different than conventional 3-4 OLBs.. in 1984 the 49ers defense led the league in points allowed, and they had OLBs that were built like modern safeties.

Running guys in and out for a quick look is great and hopefully stumble upon a diamond in the rough
