Packers Coaches Introduced: Highlights

The Green Bay Packers introduced a new coaching staff in a press release on Wednesday morning.  The two chief assistants in that staff, former Miami Dolphins HC and former Packers OC Joe Philbin took the vacant offensive coordinator job, and former Browns HC and Jets DC Mike Pettine will man the defense.  McCarthy and both new coordinators addressed the media

Highlights from head coach Mike McCarthy

  • They expect to have Darren Perry's situation figured out by the end of the week.
  • They are building new defensive and offensive playbooks.

Highlights from offensive coordinator Joe Philbin

  • Philbin indicated that his first job being in Green Bay may have allowed him to take an organization like the Packers for granted.
  • Philbin sees his job as making Mike McCarthy look like the smartest playcaller in the natinoal football league and to score points, period.
  • "I think I'll be a better assitant coach than the first time around"
  • "It's emotional for all of us.  We care and love a lot of people here and a lot of people love and care about us.  This is what's so special about Green Bay." Philbin discussed returning to Green Bay, the place where he coached when his son passed away.
  • Philbin indicated that his daughter endorsed the move, and if she had wanted to graduate from her high school in Indy, it's not likely Philbin would be back.
  • "I was in south florida for a few years,  I got a bit soft"
  • "When you understand your own system really, really well, you know what adjustments can be made to maintain your advantage over your opponent"
  • "They're going to do all my work and I'm going to get home early" - Philbin cracking wise about all the coaches with "coordinator" in their title within his offensive staff.
  • "This feels right. They say timing is everything in life and this feels like the right place to be. It's time to go to work."

Highlights from defensive coordinator Mike Pettine

  • "The 3-4 4-3 debate has fallen by the wayside.  That's completely flipped.  College run game... spread formations.  We call it base, it isn't our base anymore."
  • two outside linebackers are our "sam" and our "rush" rush can put his hand down and we can get into the 4-3 alignment
  • "The first thing that jumps out is his versatility"- Pettine on Matthews
  • Clay Matthews is a guy that can play multiple positions can give you depth, the other thing is from an identification standpoint on the other side of the ball
  • Feels Matthews can still get after the passer.
  • "This is a whole fresh set of ideas.  When you build a staff you want excellent teachers.  Guys from different backgrounds you can draw ideas from."
  • "It was great to be (seattle) exposed to that. Pull some things from it."
  • "I'm afraid my next job is going to be in Canada!" Pettine joked about his NFL tour around the Great Lakes.
  • "I had never been to green bay.  Always missed it.  Been to every other nfl city"
  • Scouting the Packers for the opener on Seattle's staff gave him a great look at Green Bay's roster.
  • "We're gonna be prepared.  Paying attention to detail"
  • Scheme and playbook a very small part of playing good defense.
  • Pettine explains that NFL teams used to be able to have 60 defenses for a game, now it's 25 because of young players and new CBA limiting practice time.
  • "we're going to be multiple and we're going to be really aggressive"
  • First part of job is to get the coaching staff prepared, collaborate and to get on same page.
  • "The NFL is all about the players"
  • Pettine doesn't sound like he wants to be a head coach again.
  • Prefers being the teacher, indicated that head coach responsibilities align more with "the principal".
  • "We prioritize pass defense.  IT gets you beat the fastest.  You lose a heck of a lot faster when you're giving up chunks in the passing game."
  • "If NFL QBs know what you're in pre-snap, you're in trouble."
  • "My natural resting gaze is not a pleasant one." Philbin knows he looks like Stone Cold Steve Austin
  • "I always like to explain the 'why'"

I like what I'm hearing from both of these guys. It's easy to start getting excited for 2018 based just on the moves we've seen so far.

Philbin has had this offense humming before. can't see why he couldn't do it again if a few holes get plugged.

I was really impressed with Pettine while listening to him. He had some key points that I really was happy to hear.

First - "First part of job is to get the coaching staff prepared, collaborate and to get on same page."
Especially this last year the defense has been very bad with communication. If Pettine can get everyone on the same page that will be huge.
"We're gonna be prepared. Paying attention to detail". That comment really says it all.

Second - "we're going to be multiple and we're going to be really aggressive"
This is something that is basically what Jim Leonard talked about on Wilde and Tausch. On there he said he would describe a Pettine defense as flexible and aggressive.

To go with that when he was asked about Clay Mathews he said "The first thing that jumps out is his versatility. Clay Matthews is a guy that can play multiple positions can give you depth, the other thing is from an identification standpoint on the other side of the ball. Feels Matthews can still get after the passer."
He talked about how Mathews can line up inside and out, and he was really productive inside. I would not be surprised at all if Mathews plays a LOT more ILB this year.

I can't wait to see what kind of change and impact Pettine makes for the Packers.

It’s as if a huge weight has been lifted off the shoulders of Lambeau. Perhaps this is just the honeymoon period which comes after sweeping changes but I am happy to hear that things are changing. I wonder how domineering TT was in his position. To hear MM say that he’s talked to Murphy more in the last two weeks than in the previous 12 years is really interesting.

No matter. At least the talk is good. Bring on the draft!

i hate to be Skeptical Sven (i just made that up), but i am feeling that Pettine has an uphill climb. other than substantial draft capital, the defense hasn't got the same institutional support that the offense has. i look at which Packers free agents got signed to nice contracts so far this off-season? A: Adams and Linsley (offensive players).. who has the largest contract on the team? A: AR12, an offensive player.. What is the coaching background of the head coach? A: offense; and, finally: which coordinator has more standing within the Packers' organization? A: OC Philbin over DC Pettine (since Philbin has already been an OC with the organization and has a longer relationship with the head coach and many within the organization). my prediction for 2018 is that the defensive side of the ball will remain the junior partner in the firm.

I went to watch the presser at Packers.com and he's buried behind the likes of Frank Cignetti and Raih.

Found that a little odd he wasn't featured right there with Philbin.

Pettine was my choice before I knew he was even consulting with Seattle. I LOVE that guy. Presence. Aggression. Intelligence.

My favorite Mike Pettine line, so far: "There's a word for almost winning...It's called...LOSING." He isn't into moral victories, or almost, or losing in Championship games. He has the mindset this org hasn't had and desperately needs. Never satisfied until you hit your goal which is a SB Championship and then when you hit it, go get ready to do it again. None of this self congratulating we've been in the playoffs for blah blah blah years. He's a WINNER not a self promoter for less than 2nd best.

He had the Browns to a 7-4 record until the Owners forced Johnny Manziel onto him.

The fact he had the Browns to a 7-4 record proves he is a winner.

Not to mention the defenses he led as a DC.

7-4? Bellicheat couldn't do that with the browns. At the pace the Browns are going at, it'll take them 14 years to win 7 games, lol.

Oh boy... You do realize there are winners who don't have winning records and losers who have winning records?

Bill Belichick had a 5 losing records out of his first 6 seasons as a HC. He was 5-11 his last year with the Browns and 5-11 his first year with the Pats. Was he a loser back then? No.

Mike Pettine is a winner. It's about mindset, presence, intelligence, aggression. Those are WINNING attributes. Mike's defenses have been pretty freaking great but those who choose not to think and look at wins and losses without considering situation will never ever get it. Pettine should have a statue in front of the stadium for getting to 7-9 with them winning 1 game out of 32 with Hue Jackson.

Mike McCarthy isn't a winner to me. He lacks many of the qualities Pettine possesses but I know it's easy to just point at stats and call him a winner. He sure was dynamic without Rodgers at QB over the years, right? Oh, yeah, almost at New England. In Dallas? The guy is not a winner to me.

There are qualities a winner possesses and Mike McCarthy falls very short in many of them. He's very fortunate Aaron is there propping him up so you can downvote people who would dare say there's more than wins and losses in what makes someone a winner.

I'm beside myself with glee that Pettine is part of our org. He is what Kevin Greene was and then some. You underestimate what passion and aggression do for a football team. We haven't been to a SB without Kevin Greene with Aaron Rodgers. Pettine will give this organization a sorely missing jolt that's been there since the departure of Kevin Greene and he'll have greater impact because he's a seasoned DC, not a neophyte position coach.

My hope is we fire MM and Pettine takes over at HC. If only that had happened already.

Pettine says he has no aspirations to be a HC again. His press con was really good. He talked about the importance of getting off of the field on 3rd down, he must have seen some Packer games. Also what really stood out to me was how opposing QB's knew how defenses would line up, again must have seen tape of Packers. Stafford said he knew what the Packers were doing on defense. It's biggest reason why this change needed to happen years ago, the whole league knew Capers scheme. Also getting to the QB, hurrying him, hitting him, getting in his head. Aggression! GOPACKGO!

Just finished it myself. Bravo. He's intelligent. Well spoken. Inspires confidence. You listen to him and you want to work with a guy like him.

He didn't drop any of his famous one liners. Found it interesting he'd never seen Lambeau with his own eyes until the plane flew over for his interview here.

I heard the bit about not wanting to be a HC. Hmmm. Not sure I buy that. What's he supposed to say? I want to do really well this next season so I can get the heck out of here? He said he hated the admin side of being a HC. Compared it from going to teacher to principal.

One thing that really stood out to me that has implications elsewhere is when he said he liked having assistant coaches he hadn't just traveled around with from job to job so he could expand his knowledge base and to bring in fresh ideas. That just screamed what we haven't been doing for several years. MM and his over loyalty led to staleness and a dearth of fresh ideas. It's almost funny that MM brought Philbin back in a way...right back to old ideas not new ones. Pettine is a smarter guy than McCarthy. The guy gets it. That answer alone is a line of demarcation for how Pettine thinks vs. MM.

Hard not feeling like our HC is coaching the D. If he got offered another job as a HC, he's smart enough to know how to do it differently so it wasn't as miserable for him as the last time.

There are few times I've felt giddy as a Packers fan over the Ted era. Now, there's been a lot to be giddy about in the post Ted era. Today, was one of those days. Pettine is here and we are the benefactor as Packers fans.

Not at all. I'm glad he's back but it's a mindset difference. MM craves sameness. It's not really a surprise he reached out to someone who previously made him look good. I don't doubt he wanted to hire one of his in house guys for DC but is under the gun to win now and he wasn't quite willing to risk his job on Joe Whitt. The moves are both job self preservation moves. It's too bad the atmosphere was so laissez faire over the last several years that we didn't get him to make moves in the interest of winning over his personal comfort level.

This offseason is really out of character for MM, and you hit on why when you talk about sameness: he's a "tweaker" and not a "radical change" guy. Over the years, MM has preferred minor changes: we'll practice on Saturdays, or moving position coaches around, or combining responsibilities. This gave at least the perception of introspection and progress to McCarthy's actions. Most people prefer some level of comfort, but how they do change can differ.

Whether this off-season by McCarthy represents moves of desperation or someone who has finally had enough is a matter of interpretation. I think that Murphy, in part, made the moves he did because he values McCarthy and wanted to shelter him as the organization 'resets'. Ultimately, I think Murphy feels like he has "his guys" in place. That might be the same feel McCarthy has, and whether it's because Philbin is familiar or good or loyal or challenging I really don't care, as long as the product improves.

I appreciate on a human level how he's opposed to firing people. Nobody should like it or ever see another as worthless and disposable. However, as a coach of an NFL football team you just have to make the tough decisions for what is in the best interest of winning.

MM has not done that, nor is he interested in doing that. That is not a winning mentality. It's a protect your buddy mentality.

We'll never know how much more we could've won if he hadn't been about his guys more than winning. He wants to win with his guys regardless if that's the best way to go about it. That is losing plain and simple. Anyone not sold out to win doesn't deserve to be an NFL coach, and MM has too many issues that prevent him from being a true winning HC.

Look, I get it when fans get whooped up on his regular season record. ANY head coach should be in the playoffs with Aaron Rodgers as your QB. MM can't get this team to the next level. Is it him? Was it Ted? Both? Neither of them ever struck me as being sold out to win SB's. Both did strike me as status quo seekers looking to protect everyone in the nest. Why or how so many don't see that or won't acknowledge it puzzle me.

Anything Mark Murphy thinks scares me. Whether it's good bad or indifferent. I think it's detestable the guy who was absentee landlord for 12 years now all of a sudden tries playing NFL owner. What could possibly go wrong, there? Mark Murphy spoke of communication being critical. Did you listen to any of his pressers? He is not very good at it. He's actually brutal. I cringed listening to him...both times and then when he was on with Bill Michaels. The guy is just not honest, not funny, has zero personality, is wholly uninspiring. I would never work for someone like him. I couldn't in good faith do it.

Our ship was rudderless or the CEO wouldn't be interjecting himself like this. It's self preservation. He wants to show after 12 years of indifference and neglect that he is the man to get this thing righted.

The housecleaning is far from complete. We have a couple of piles of garbage in plain sight. I won't feel good about the Green Bay Packers until all the trash is taken out and that might be after 12 is gone.

You're an interesting poster. I've posted that what makes a great HC is subjective and detailed what I look for in someone who will bring SB's. I'm sorry that you're offended that I'm not calling MM a winner because you happen to think he is when I haven't the first clue why you think that.

Pettine is a winner...to me. Mike McCarthy not a winner...to me. If that's reversed for you, that's fantastic. Why don't you regale me with why I've got it wrong and you've got it right?

Why do you feel personally attacked when I post my thoughts? You do personally attack, yet, I find it amusing. Why? Regale me...

Nice deflection attempt. Whether you feel personally attacked or not has nothing to do with what your assumed qualities of a winner are. No one is scrolling back through multiple articles and comments searching for your detailed list of qualities. You have no problem with posting verbose comments, so let's hear your subjective opinion in detail.

Your comments are open to criticism based not only their own content, but also on the content of your previous comments. That includes your claim to have worked in "sports media", which you used in an attempt to establish your bona fides.

Like what I'm hearing from these guys, assuming, of course, that when Philbin says,"Philbin sees his job as making Mike McCarthy look like the smartest play caller in the National football league and to score points, period." he's talking about football points on the scoreboard, not scoring points with McCarthy, LOL. Seriously, I like all of these moves and I like the statement, "Pettine explains that NFL teams used to be able to have 60 defenses for a game, now it's 25 because of young players and new CBA limiting practice time." I think most of us Packer fans felt that Capers was trying to throw the 60 defenses at the youngsters on defense, resulting in the "Capers look" aka two defensive players staring at each other with their arms in the air looking like they are thinking, "YOU were supposed to cover that guy, not ME, Right????". So far, so good! Go, Pack, Go!

I'm excited to see how the team shapes up next season. It looks like McCarthy finally got what he really wanted as far as coordinators, so now we get to see if his vision will actually work.

Also like that both Philbin and Pettine are really focused on teaching; doesn't matter how talented your players are if they don't know what they're doing. and they both seem very intent on making sure everybody knows - and does - their job.

I think you hit on a good point which is the emphasis on the teaching. There's not a lot of practice time, so they need to be able to be effective at getting things done in short order.

I guessed we would see additions at one of the coordinator positions with HC experience...I didn't expect two. I think MM likes having those guys to lean on (I thought he pointed that out about Capers relatively early after he was hired). They're also going to have a different feel for organization and structure than those who haven't been an HC. A lot to like about these changes.

I guess you can't have hair and coordinate the O or D. Brian Urlacher has reached out to both Philbin and Pettine and tried selling them on hair club for men.

Just finished the McCarthy and Philbin pressers.

What struck me about MM is he said he's talked to Mark Murphy more in the last 3 weeks than he has in 12 years. Claimed he likes it but his body language was interesting after he got asked the question. I'm guessing he really doesn't like it and wonders why the sudden interest. Point two is he dogmatically claimed stopping the run was the emphasis. Pettine said stopping the pass was the emphasis.

Philbin is bright. It does feel right having him back. Both our coordinators are brighter than our HC, and I'd feel more confident if either one was running the show. Can't help but feel great about the right hand men on O and D. Haven't felt this upbeat about the coaching staff since Holmgren was here. 12 is reportedly happy and I think 12 respects and really likes Joe where I don't get that he feels either for the HC. Very excited to see this O next year and wish Philbin called the plays.

Big, big day in Green Bay. Very curious to see if these comments about player acquisition from MM and Pettine come to pass. It's almost a whole new world. Arrow pointing up not sideways.

John...I get your contempt for McCarthy, I really do. During this past season especially I wanted McCarthy, Thompson, and Capers all to gone almost equally. But when I REALLY started to think about it I thought keeping McCarthy would be by far the least of the evils.

First of all I started to look around at who might be better AND is available than McCarthy? Who would you suggest the Packers hire who would be better than McCarthy for the Packers right now? They are in the process of souping up the staleness that has crept into McCarthy's offense. Rodgers is going to turn 35 next December. Do we really want to install a whole new offense, a new philosophy on offense with this mostly veteran group?

I'm the first to admit, 13 years for a HC in one place IS a LONG time. But on the flip side I really like what he's doing right now. I like Pettine and Philbin and respect them both a ton. With the way things seem to be set up it's win or go home for McCarthy this year. The positive thing is there's NO ONE in the NFC who will be THAT much better than GB in 2018. Matter of fact with a few additions here, a few draft picks who can start there, this team WITH Rodgers might turn out to be the best in the NFC next season.

McCarthy has my confidence for one more season. It's either sink or swim though

Well, I'm not sure if I want MM to leave. But as of now, there are two in-house coaches with past HC experience as part of a very large coaching staff.

That means there is a viable in-season replacement and the manpower to get the job done with one less face in the coaching crowd.

yeah...i think MM should get out the way and let Philbin retool the playbook and Pettine build his defense andMM can call the plays and manage the clock and throw the red flags and call TO, none of which he was very good at.

I liked everything that I heard from these guys including the assistants. I like the additions and the influx of new blood - we needed it.

I hope that McCarthy gives these guys the authority and latitude to make the necessary changes. It may also be the chance for McCarthy to step back and pay attention to the big picture rather than his call sheet.

Looking forward to the draft

Oh God yes. If he is not confident enough to do so, especially now with an even larger staff, then what's the point. More voices to cloud the message? Let Philbin and Pettine do their jobs. Fortunately they are experienced and proud enough individuals I suspect, that MM will empower them and not micromanage them. If not it will be more of the same.

I could not believe the contrast I saw between Capers and Pettine.
I often watched Capers' news conferences and I was left confused. There was a total lack of emotion and he seem confused or could not explain himself clearly which perhaps explains why his players were often confused. With Pettine, it was just the opposite. He was precise, knowledgeable and spoke with confidence and conviction. He has an aggressive nature that is an inherent part of his personality. The kind of coach players would love to play for. A basic statement like: "if the QB understands the defensive set on each play, you are already beat." I think of our last two games against Atlanta and how they effortlessly drove down the field and scored on each possession.
