Packers Cornerback on Joe Whitt: He's the Best Coach I've Ever Had

Cornerback Tay Glover-Wright heaps praise on his position coach in Green Bay.

The Green Bay Packers made headlines last week for all the promotions they handed out on the coaching staff.

Tom Clements was promoted to associate head coach. Edgar Bennett moved up to offensive coordinator. Ron Zook stepped into the special teams coordinator role.

If the next promotion happens on the defensive side of the football, there's at least one deserving candidate, according to Packers cornerback Tay Glover-Wright.

"I absolutely love playing for Joe Whitt," said Glover-Wright appearing on Cheesehead TV's Railbird Central on Friday. "I tell my people all the time that Coach Joe is the best coach I've ever had in my life. That's honestly how I feel. He's a great cornerbacks coach. He's a great life coach."

Whitt has done yeoman's work developing a group of cornerbacks that was arguably among the deepest postions on the Packers roster last season. It's a group that's done so well, several members could receive overtures from other NFL teams when free agency opens next month.

Tramon Williams, Davon House and Jarrett Bush are all scheduled to hit the open market when their contracts expire.

If a few of them happen to leave Titletown, a door could open for a player like Glover-Wright, who was recently signed to a reserve/future contract by the Packers after spending the 2014 season on the practice squad.

Glover-Wright is a pretty story in his own right. After being cut by the Atlanta Falcons in training camp, the rookie thought his dreams of playing in the NFL might be kaput.

"It was actually a long road for me," said Glover-Wright. "Coming from Atlanta after they waived me after the third preseason game, I was actually sitting at home for almost a month. I was pretty down. I thought my chances of being in the NFL were over.

"A couple weeks later I talked to my agent and he was out making phone calls for me, doing work for me. I get a call from the Packers telling me they're ready for me for a workout. Talking to my agent, he's like, 'This is a legit chance. Show them what you got. Go out there and give it your all.' I had my workout. I thought I did pretty decent. Maybe they've seen something they liked, obviously that's why I'm here.

"After my workout there wasn't a roster spot open, so I sat down and spoke to one of the recruiters, one of the guys that worked me out. They were just telling me that they liked what I did, they liked what they saw in me, and we want you back as soon as possible. I'm thinking they're not going to call me back, but for sure, like a week later, I got a phone call: 'You ready to go? Your bags packed? I need you here in three hours.'"

Signed Oct. 6 to the practice squad, Glover-Wright spent the rest of the season in Green Bay learning the ins and outs of playing cornerback in the NFL.

Even if he wasn't ready for primetime this past season, you understand why the Packers are intent on developing Glover-Wright. It's only his second year playing cornerback, you see.

Glover-Wright began his college career going the juco route, playing both quarterback and wide receiver at Highland (Kan.) Community College (2010) and Eastern Arizona Community College (2011). He transferred to Utah State for his final two years of eligibility, but didn't switch to cornerback until his senior year.

When the Packers signed Glover-Wright to a new contract in January, he felt good about the committment the Packers were making, continuing his deveopment.

"That's what I feel like I need," said Glover-Wright. "I'm very glad and grateful they stuck with me because I'm going to grow. This is only my second year playing cornerback, so I'm going to grow. I'm going to get better and things are going to get easier for me. It's a big confidence boost."

Listed as 6-0 and 175 lbs. on the Packers roster, Glover-Wright checks in as the lightest player on the entire team, which begs the question, can someone that's 175 lbs. handle the brutal physicality of the NFL?

"I got a lot of heart," said Glover-Wright. "As I always say, it's not about the size of the lion, it's the size of the heart. But yeah, I'm definitely getting that 175 up during the offseason. That 175 won't look so bad the next time you see my on the roster."

Being so light, however, there's a tradeoff. Carrying such little weight on his frame, Glover-Wright would also appear to be one of the fastest players on the Packers roster.

At Utah State for a pro day workout earlier this year, KSL Sports reported that Glover-Wright ran a blazing 4.30-second 40-yard dash.

Other outlets have Glover-Wright checking in at slightly slower times. The Desert News says it's 4.38 seconds. NFLDraftScout.com says times ranged from 4.36 to 4.37. Regardless, everyone has him clocking in sub-4.4.

Being in Green Bay is a perfect situation for both team and player.

Not only have the Packers made a committment to Glover-Wright, signing him to a contract, the young cornerback sees a situation where he might be able to climb up the depth chart in short order if a few players happen to leave in free agency.

"Yes indeed, I do," said Glover-Wright. "I'm very confident this offseason because that's where I'm going to get my shine on, and that's how I'm going to win my big contract, because I'm ready to go here and compete and get me some playing time."

Be nice to read more details about how the whole process of signing to the practice squad, finding a place to stay, figuring out the routine, how he was welcomed, what they do on game days, his best moment in practice on and on and on.

Thanks for the interview Brian. Can he return kicks? Could really use some speed back there although Hyde did nicely on 2014 and the playoffs.

He didn't return kicks at Utah State, which is about all I can offer. I don't know if he did as a juco or whether the Packers are considering him.

He returned kicks while at Utah State. His Jr year he had 6 KR averaging 19.8 yards per return, also with a punt return for 7 yards. His Senior year he saw a lot more time returning kicks logging at least one return in all but two games for a total of 19 returns for 429 yards (22.6 avg.) with a long of 54 against San Jose State. (I got these stats off of USU's official athletics website).

I knew Tay in school, he's a great guy and a hard worker. Hope that he can find the field with the Pack this season!

Joe Whitt has coached two UDFA into above average starters in Tramon Williams and Sam Shields. I don't think either are superstar, lock down corners but I have no complaints with either.

Davon House is another Whitt success story, at least to some degree. House still has some rough edges but he was drafted as a project and is less of one now. Casey Hayward has thrived under Whitt--when Hayward is able to get some snaps due to the crowded depth chart. I don't know if Micah Hyde deals with Whitt or Darren Perry more. But there is another guy that has thrived in GB.

Tay Glover-Wright and Demetri Goodson are in the best hands among the Packer coaching staff when it comes to developing talent, IMO.

Great point, Hank. Whitt was signed as a defensive quality control coach in 2008 and became CB coach in February of 2009. However, the Tramon angle is not as clear. Tramon arrived in GB in 2007, and started 20 games btw 2007 and 2009. He replaced an injured Al Harris mid season in 2009, and then blossomed as the starter in 2010. While he probably was making progress prior to Whitt's arrival, I am willing to give Whitt credit for Tramon, Shields (a UDFA so not a sure fire thing) and the other CBs.
