Packers' Domineering Pass Rush Sets the Tone Against Jameis Winston, Buccaneers

All three phases of the game -- offense, defense and special teams -- found a way to contribute to the Green Bay Packers' overtime win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

Defense, even more so, has been at the heart of much criticism this season as well as seasons prior. It's become a mantra amongst fans even as far back as the 2013 playoffs when ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick ran all over a Dom Capers-coached Green Bay defense.

Those times are long gone, but ever since, the Packers haven't been able to bask in too many dominant defensive performances. However, on Sunday, they were able to relish that seemingly foreign feeling.

Behind seven sacks -- 3.5 from linebackers Clay Matthews and Jake Ryan and 3.5 from defensive linemen Kenny Clark, Dean Lowry and Mike Daniels -- the Packers were able to keep consistent pressure on Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston for the duration of the game.

"It keeps our hopes alive," said Matthews after the game. "We understood very much where we're at in the season and, unfortuantely, we put ourselves in this situation. We recognize it as a five-game season with a playoff mentality, similar to last year, and we had to get this win."

Matthews recorded his highest sack total in a single game since week 16 of the 2014 season -- also against the Buccaneers.

Matthews missed the Packers' last game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a groin injury and was questionable to play against the Buccaneers. Judging by his performance, he ended up being just fine.

"I felt good. Coming off of a muscle strain always offers a little hesitancy to really cut it loose, especially as a pass rusher fighting with guys that are 300-plus pounds. I was able to do a lot of things that I wanted to.

"Furthermore, it was good to see guys like [Kenny] Clark back out there making plays."

Clark was returning from an injury of his own -- an MCL sprain suffered the same week Matthews suffered his groin injury: week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens. Miraculously, he was able to play and notched two sacks to his name.

Clark had been a staple in the Packers' run defense this season, and although Buccaneers running back Peyton Barber rushed for over 100 yards on Sunday, that can likely be attributed to short offensive possessions that hindered the Packers' defense in the second half.

Defensive lineman Dean Lowry's pressure helped bolster the Packers' pass rush as well, and he even caught a Winston fumble and returned it for a touchdown in the second quarter. He pieced together his own finest career performance at just the perfect time as the Packers continue the fight to stay relevant through December.

A good way of doing that is coming one sack shy of tying the second-most in a single game in franchise history. The last time the Packers recorded eight sacks in a single game was against the Los Angeles Raiders in 1993, and 14 years later, they were knocking on the door.

"They got a lot of their yardage on a lot of screens, we didn't do a good enough job of shutting that down," Matthews said. "But we did a good job of getting after them, for the most part. Constantly being harassed back there has to impact the quarterback and make him second-guess at times."

Exactly. The Bucs line was bad before the year started. It's certainly worse with backups.

Our pass rush sucks. This is a fact.

People we got our butt taken by the Vikings we got taken to the cleaners by the Saints we got kicked in the teeth by Detroit and Baltimore totally shut us down and the Steelers don't know how we played that game decently. Probably because our offense plays the same 3_4 Steeler defense practice! !! That's why our practices are good and why we suck in games...wake up....pull the cheese out of your head! !!

Are you upset because were not losing, and might get the 19 pick of the draft? These guys played well today. They have made me feel good. They want to be winners and played like it today. Praise them and be positive. It's important we make the play-offs. It's important to A-rod, he plays against the Vikings. Would you see A-Rod throwing the ball if he thought we couldn't win. There was a lot to be happy with today, regardless of the opponent.

Baltimore plays a 3-4 and it didn't do the Packers much good, then.

Maybe maybe if A. Rogers comes back and we beat Carolina Minnesota and Detroit then maybe we may do something but sadly probably not.

What playoff team do you see this defense forcing a punt from?

With #12 at QB, this defense is designed to force just enough TOs and just enough FGs for the offense to win. Been that way for years.

All you can do is try to beat the teams on your schedule. They would be in no better position at this stage if they'd beaten New Orleans (who they'll never catch in the standings) and lost to Tampa.

The Bucs lead TOP by nearly double. Considering that fact, I think the D played pretty well.

One interesting look we gave today was the 6 linebacker package. I called it out on the live blog, but nobody really noticed it. With :21 left in the half and the Bucs facing a 3rd and 9, we had 5 LBs in the game. Fackrell and Brooks were in the center, Perry and Matthews on the edges, Martinez and Burnett in the middle. Just before, they showed Daniels, Dial, Lowery and Clark on the sideline.

Do we run that often?

Packer defense was nothing special but had to be exhausted. Tampa O-line was all back ups! ! Packer's QB play was underwhelming. Running game was a positive. Only 9 offensive plays in the the first 25 minutes of the second half is terrible. Lots of penalties all game! Thank goodness it was Bucs and next the Browns!

Is there any reason opponents shouldn't run around 20 screen-plays a game?

There are times when there are no defenders in sight when the receiver catches the ball, before the obligatory missed tackles and failure to get off blocks leads to a first down regardless of distance.

All year long this has been going on. You'd think they would have come up with a remedy by now.

If I'm the Packers coaching staff, I think I might do nothing all week in practice except run one screen followed by another. If the defense gives up a first down, they all get kicked in the nuts. If the offense doesn't get a first down, they all get kicked in the nuts. I'm not sure if the CBA really allows for nut-kicking in practice, but it seems to me that this idea might be good for both sides of the ball.
