Packers Gave Lancaster A Signing Bonus And Re-signed Lewis and Redmond

The details on Tyler Lancaster's one-year contract became available.  Overthecap reports that he will count $1.248M against the 2021 cap.  Lancaster has a base salary of $920,000 (the minimum for him), a $105,000 workout bonus, and a tiny game active roster bonus of just $25,000, plus a $200,000 signing bonus.  Lancaster missed one game last year, so his cap number is $1,562.50 less than $1.25M.

Lancaster represents much needed defensive line depth.  The tender for an RFA was $2.133 million and Lancaster's minimum was $920K.  The two sides did not meet in the middle, but Lancaster did get more than the minimum, and more importantly, he got some guaranteed money in the form of the signing bonus.  I think Lancaster is better than some fans think.  He is not bad as a run-stuffer: he just does does not offer much as a pass-rusher.  Pro Football Focus gave him a grade of 64.8 (an average grade) and Andy Herman gave him a +1.40 grade for 2020.

I had hoped to see the Packers sign a free agent defensive lineman from outside the organization.  My thought process was that the defensive line draft class is not very good this year and the cornerback position looks loaded with talent, so buy the defensive lineman and draft the cornerback.  However, GM Gutekunst re-signed Kevin King for either roughly $2M or $5M, depending on how one views it.

Most of the linemen on my personal list signed for $3 million, $5 million or $7 million.  The last candidate on my list, Danny Shelton, just signed a qualified contract for $937,500.  However, several people have indicated I am thinking of the Danny Shelton of a few years ago and that Shelton had a very bad year in 2020, albeit in Detroit.  Perhaps the Packers expect an interesting defensive lineman to be a cap casualty later this summer.

Below is Lancaster's deal (wondering why they bothered with the roughly $1,562 per Active Game Bonus):

Yr. Base SB Proration GA W/O Cap
21 $920K $200K $25K $105K $1.248M

Marcedes Lewis:

The Packers re-signed Lewis.  It appears that Lewis will have a cap number of between $2.3 million and $2.4 million.  Unfortunately, OTC is not clear for 2021 and is incomprehensible for 2022.  Ken Ingalls listed the numbers for 2021 but was silent as to 2022. [I am omitting an issue involving how game active bonuses should be treated with a 17 game season: suffice to say I calculated that Lewis would have a cap charge some $41,000 more than shown below, not enough to spend time on.]

Note that Overthecap put a $2.08 million signing bonus proration in for 2022 and indicated that the $700,000 roster bonus was due on the third day of the 2022 league year, so it is not a game active bonus.  I find that highly unlikely.  I do not know how the Packers could even insert a $2.08 million proration for just the 2022 year, and OTC did not even bother to show a proration.  Adding $2.08 million does make the contract add up to 2 years for $8M, and that seems to me to be why OTC did that.

OTC indicated that Lewis received a $2.1 million signing bonus (which I show as $525K prorated over four years), but OTC shows no prorations for the signing bonus.  OTC shows a 2022 cap charge of $4.525It looks to me like it will turn out to be a two-year, almost $6 million deal.

Yr Base SB Proration Roster W/O Cap Dead Savings Cash
21 $1.15M $525K $700K GA $50K $2.342M $2.1M   $4.0M
22 $1.17M? $525K $700K $50K $1.92M $1.575M $345K $1.92M
23 Void $525K       $1.05M
24 Void $525K        - - - - -

Will Redmond:

The Packers have re-signed Redmond, but no details are available for his contract.  At present, I have assumed that Redmond signed for his minimum of $920,000; he would displace a player in the top 51 contracts making $780,000, so his net cost against the salary cap would be $140,000.

Raven Greene also would have a net cost of $140,000.  I assume Greene can command only his minimum after being on IR in each of his first three seasons and managing to play just 437 snaps in three years.  I read that Greene visited the Buffalo Bills on March 26th but left without a contract.

Salary Cap:

I have updated the Packer Cap Tracker to reflect these moves.  The Packers have about $2.6 million or so in cap space.  The team only needs about $2.3 million to sign their draft class, so the Packers do not need to make any further moves to generate salary cap space until after the draft.  They could even make one or two small deals with players willing to play for something under $1 million.  The Packers will need to generate almost $3 million for the PS and $1.32 million for the 52nd and 53rd player contract by September, and several million more to handle any injuries to players requiring them to start the year on the PUP or IR.

Still, it would not surprise me if the Packers sit tight until after the draft and then reassess their situation in light of their selections.

Thank you. I tend to agree that they will stand pat till after the draft. I don’t see much happening with FAs till the summer. That’s when we might see a cut or further contract amendment.

I do think that we will potentially add a DL or two there, if we truly want the option to get bigger. The players in this draft are the smaller, penetrative (in college) types. We have 2 in Keke and theoretically, Lowry. In my opinion we do not need more. We picked up DL in season last year. If healthy a Winn or Price could be back maybe both. Without Pettine we might actually use them. Then again, Im placing a lot of hope in Barry.

The Packers have the space to sign Winn or Price without having to disturb other sources of cap relief. I will always wonder why Winn could not get snaps. He played only a few snaps, so PFF's 68.9 above average grade is on a tiny sample. IDK why I like that Winn had 5 solo tackles and just one assist.

You like it because whenever the guy played he was in on stuffing the run. Thats why i like it anyway.

He's an affordable and solid rotational player, who seemed to regress a bit last season. I just wish he could get off Blks better.. We're missing that D lineman that can get us double figures in the stuffs category. Even Clark has only a few, but that might be a result of being dbl teamed because of our 1or2 line look. Which hopefully we'll see less of if we can get another good starting CB in the draft .

I know that Tyler Ervin paid a visit to the Bills. I don't think he signed. I like what he brought to the offense and as a returner and I am wondering if we would consider bringing him back on a cheap deal. At the moment we don't have a returner unless we draft one.

Oh dear, I think it was Ervin and not Greene. If so, mea culpa for my memory. I googled both Ervin and Greene but that's just something one sees by reading various reports.

What good is he if he's never available?

Good stuff and a good depth signing by the Packers, they are keeping that team chemistry which is so important. They will bargain shop after June 1st a nd I believe that any free agents they sing then won’t count against the compensatory draft pick formula.
Meaning the Packers should get a third round choice (Linsley) and maybe a late rounder for the other guys they lost. The Packers are one of the best at that. Good job by the front office.

Agree... we need bigger DT's to cover up the guards and help with Kenny Clark... maybe the kid from Pittsburgh Tywman or the the young man from LSU Shelvin or my first choice the kid from Ohio State Togiai..... We definitely need to draft some help for the line. The Ohio State kid is a big kid who could control the gap. He was a fullback in High school and has alot of athletic ability. His RAS is 8.58. Could be available in the third or fourth.

Agreed. The thing is I like Barmore, some CBs, some OTs, and some ILBs in the first round, and the latter three positions plus some WRs, guards, and safeties in the 2nd and/or 3rd rounds.

Don't hesitate to click on the Packer Cap Tracker link if you want an in-depth blow-by-blow accounting of every move the Packers have made this offseason. I've got 2022 cap liabilities at $224M adjusted for a 51 person roster.

I do check the comments there.

Thanks for your work and insights. I read about how this player and that player got this much and that much and it never seemed to add up. Now I can depend on quality journalism from you to get it right.

Thank you for the kind words.

I try to report the numbers as accurately as possible. I'm not an accountant, but they are close.

Lancaster’s run grade from PFF was 71 just a shade below Clarke at 74. Hes above average in that area, but as TGR stated doesn’t any much at pass rush. Good back up for the money. We need to add a DL in the draft, unfortunately, the draft doesn’t provide many good options for that position.

The Packers are clearly committed to "running it back" with as close to the same cast of characters as possible. Really, why not? These guys rolled to two straight NFC championship games. The problem is that they laid eggs in both those chances! Perhaps the third time will be the charm? I think change is coming and this year is the last hurrah. If they can't get it done this year we may be saying bye bye to AR (trade) and no. 17 via free agency. Adams getting extended seems to be a foregone conclusion in everybody's minds but I don't believe they will do it. Jaire will be first priority and they don't have enough $ to satisfy Adams.

Depends on what year Gute makes the call. Is it 2022 or 2023. If the team makes back to the NFC championship again, does Gute push for one more year with this group. And can he and Ball manage the Cap till the new TV deal kicks in. That's a tough road ahead for Gute, no matter what choices he makes.

Great stuff as always.
I wonder what the packers DL thought process is..
I understand Kenny C can play multiple positions. yet I have no idea if KC the Run stuffing NT already. You don't want 2 NTs out there of your 3 DL in base 3-4.
Is kenny just as good player at 3 or 5 Tech in Base.
Should The Packers obtain a big run stuffer NT and move KC? or find run stufferes who can play 3 or 5 Tech better than Lowery/Lancaster in both Run and Pass. L and L aren't bad against the run, solid data noted through PFF grades.
They are both bad against the pass and it hurts team performance. Where does Keke fit into this?
Being as I don't know the answers to the above questions, it's tough to form a strong opinion on the type of players in the draft at IDL as well as FA as to the packers drafting them.

That's what I love about Barmore he can play any of them.
